Hickory is definitely one of the few bright spots in the Kingston area. Been to the south and I'd put their pork and brisket up with any. Really friendly people and a great beer list. Took a rack to go and it heated up great. Loved each visit and would definitely recommend to anybody coming to the area.
Things must have changed since Hickory got their Zagat ratting as this was worst bar-b-q I have every had. Dry, tasteless and tough. I had the pork sandwich wrap and roasted potato salad. The pork was tough dry and tasteless, the potato salad worse and salt and pepper did not help at all. The tap water had more taste than the pork and that is not a good thing. I will never go back, I am just glad I did not go with the family.
I definitely disagree with the first reviewer. The 'cue couldn't be better - actually I think it has gotten better over the years. Always a fan of the ribs and chicken but the real winner here in the BBQ category is the Turkey Thighs. What a treat. Also love the beer list, the desserts and some of the non BBQ stuff, especially a solid Shrimp in the Basket, a delicious meatloaf, the areas best chili and buffalo wings. I agree with the reviewer who raved about the accomodating family-owners. Always pleasant and the staff really seems to respond and reflect this willingness to help find solutions for picky diners - to which I'm friends with many. In addition to the coconut cream pie, try the chcocolate Mousse and the Chocolate pecan.
Pros: Barbececue, owners, comfort foods, beer.
Cons: Parking can be tight.
Despite what the previous reviewer said I love the pulled pork at Hickory. Next to the chicken it's probably my favorite thing on the menu. From the homemade sauces to the fresh desserts - love the coconut cream pie especially - I have never had a real bad meal there. The service has always been real nice especially the family that owns it. I've brought guests and thay've gone out of their way to accomodate them. i would definitely recommend hickory and the people I speak to almost always agree.
Pros: Great barbecue, good beer list, nice people.
Cons: Parking lot needs work
Disappointing to say the least. Since having lunch there I have talked to others who have eaten at Hickory all agree it does not deserve the ratings it has received in the past. My pork sandwich with a side of roasted potato salad was tasteless, tough and dry. The sourdough flat bread wrap the pork was enclosed in was good and the wait staff attentive and that is the only positive thing I can say.
Pros: good service
Cons: bad food
