Ok...I've just read the negative reviews below and I'm shocked. I've been going to G's Urban Styles since 2002...I migrated from having chemical hair to starting my locs with Garvin and Raymond (both of my stylists). I have spent years at "ghetto" salons all over Brooklyn...when my hair was permed.....and had become fed up with the assembly line treatment at the Dominican Salons.....so when my sister in law recommended G's....I jumped at the chance....

I have long, gorgeous, healthy locs because of G's. I've been using Aveda products since the 80's....and for the fact that G's is an Aveda salon...and my hair can be treated with the same great products I use at home - there is no question as to why I wouldn't go here. Garvin and Raymond have treated me with respect and love over the years....and yes.... I am one of those "regulars"....but I do make appointments....and I do wait...because they are worth it. What hair salon have you gone to that doesn't have some gossip? or a long wait.....I'm not saying that its acceptable.....but I think some people have entirely too high of an expectation for a salon. At G's....the receptionists are well trained - friendly..and they always follow up with you.. If your stylist is running late....they always come and chat with you...and apologize... or they'll call your mobile to give you a heads up.....When a previous client is late....it backs everyone up....that's understood....I too have spent a few hours in G's....but after going to many other salons....I always return to them.

G's new salon/spa around the corner on Bergen is magnificent....I've had my hair done there as well ...and eyebrows done downstairs at the spa..... nothing but exceptional service.

I've admired and watched all of the stylists in G's for years.....they are sharp...and have exceptional cutting/styling skills.....I'm always infatuated with how the girls who have chemically treated hair always leave with bouncy/soft curls....and their hair always looks so light and feathery.....and for those with natural styles - they too leave with great styles and colour. I've seen some disasters walk in the door.....and then leave looking like models... and I'm serious.....

As for the attiude of Garvin....I beg to differ....
Even when he is most busy - he always finds the time to greet new clients....and advise or assist with what you're looking for.....and he will give you an honest opinion....whether you like it or not.....I appreciate that....and I think most people will.

I'm sorry for the young woman's experience below....
But I have been a loyal client of G's over the years.....and have enjoyed the salon...his previous "G Spa".. on Flatbush Ave....and most recently.....his new salon/spa on Bergen.

Do not let the negative reviews sway you.....

Give it a try....and if its not for you....move on.....

But I will never leave G's.....

Pros: Professional Service

Cons: Sometimes a long wait..but worth it..

I have gone to G's several times. This salon is more ghetto than upscale, don't let the decor fool you! Over time I grew disatisfied with the nasty attitudes of the stylists, their lack of motivation to show up on time and the owner's lack of professionalism. All of the stylists, including Garvin, have nasty , bigger than life egos, as if they do not realize they are hairstylists, nothing more, nothing less.

On more than one occasion I sat and waited for more than an hour for my stylist to show up, or for whoever the manager is in that place, to even ask for someone to wash my hair. The vibe in the salon is very rude and negative, as if they are doing you a favor by showing up late, being nasty, then finally doing your hair.

These sub par stylists are oblivious to the fact that NYC has thousands of "better, upscale" salons a woman can go to. The owner of the salon (Garvin) is usually not there or late. They don't handle complaints very well either. Stylists argue in this salon and they seem to have their favorite customers who they take right on the spot (not in order of arrival or appointment time), although everyone has appointments.

G, the owner, often tries to push you to have chemical services done that you did not request so that he can make more money. G will try to bully you into upgrading your service, while you're in the chair, with your hair still wet and everything! He once said to me in a very nasty tone while he was styling my hair, (after I said "No" to having a chemical service done), "Well, I'm going to make money off of you whether you have it done or not."

The stylists at G's mostly like the women customers who are regulars and who have very short hair and need a relaxer touch up, this equals less work and more $ for the stylists/salon.

G and his stylists love to complain and gossip. Some of his stylists gossip and complain about G and things that go on in the salon, to customers. It is a mess! I've had a better experience going to the Dominicans who get you in an out in less than an hour, for a total of $25-$30 and they don't involve you in their foolishness and personal dramas.

G has opened up a new salon, but I heard there's never anyone in there. It's probably his negative karma and toxic personality, keeping new (smarter) clients away.

After having several dissatisfying experiences with this salon, I will never go back again. Ladies go somewhere else where your money and head of hair will be appreciated!

Pros: the salon is clean

Cons: A greedy, unprofessional owner and nasty/gossiping stylists

This was my first time visiting the salon. The receptionist was nice and professional when I called to make the appointment. Vanessa is great she was a little backed up and kept checking to make sure I was ok with my wait. G started my hair for her. Vanessa takes her time to make sure you hair looks perfect. I was very happy with my hair and felt very comfortable in the salon.

This was the worst hair experience of my life. I went in shoulder length hair for a trim and flat iron. Not only did Garvin burn my hair, but he cut it to my ear...I asked for a TRIM, but he insisted I needed a haircut and gave me an very proper, conservative bob! He never asked me how I wanted my hair styled and became indignant when I expressed dissatisfaction with my hair. I am angry, hurt, and embarrassed by my new hairstyle. STAY AWAY FROM G AND HIS SCISSORS!

this is supposed to be one of the best instead one of the worse!!! the service was horrible, to expensive for the amount of time that I had to wait. my stylist garvin kept me waiting for hours and I so hated my cut, it was truly the worse cut ever and then the style did'nt make it any better. Not sure if I would give up on the salon totally because i have other friends that go there but would never sit in his chair again!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Went to this salon for 3 years. Liked it at first and then fell out of love with it. Many of the stylists have attitudes. Also the salon itself is run down and dirty

My friend made an appt. for this salon even though she read the reviews about the wait. She had to reschedule after the weekday receptionist called her to tell her the hairstylist was running behind schedule. So she went the next day. Not only did she get there 1/2 hour before her appt. She was in this salon for 7 hours. 12:30 to 7:30 to be exact. And we were going out for 8pm! I couldn't believe it. She knew there was a wait and they took long but this was ridiculous. And there was two people working on her head. I wanted to go to this salon but after her experience I will not even bother. Its a shame she said that they were nice and spoke to her often but for seven hours they would tell her five more minutes. To top it off the weekend receptionist asked everyone to pay at 3pm before she left for the day. $150.00 dollars later and my friend did not like her hair. Go at your own risk. If your time is valuable this is not the salon for you.

G's is the one and only option for the best hair treatment and styles in Brooklyn. All of the stylists are amazing! My stylist is Avril and she is pure genius! I have been going to her for two solid years and every time I leave the salon, I am soooo happy with my hair. It is expensive but absolutely worth every penny. You will be pleasantly surprised at the sheer genius of these people. They are so talented at what they do that if they suggest a new hair style for you, you should probably take their advice. I highly recommend this salon to anyone looking for sheer fabulousness!

G's Salon is a great salon to go to if you don't mind spending the money. The salon can be pretty pricey, however it is definitely worth it. Everyone who leaves the salon always looks fabulous. They use Aveda products which are great for your hair. The atmosphere is fun and friendly and you're guaranteed to meet great people there. Vanessa is my stylist and she is simply fabulous. She is a patient genius who perfects every looks she attempts. Karlie is also really good with cuts. Avril is great with weaves and G, the owner works wonders with natural hair.

G's was my salon for the majority of my time in NYC...Vanessa is still my stylist (even though I've relocated, I still fly up for a good cut) and is the best. She's into total hair care, can cut her butt off and really does exactly what you want. I'm more adventurous so I had a really sharp, trendy cut...but she's also good with weaves and natural hair...I love and miss her so much...In ATL now and cant find anyone who can cut as good as her.

Also, every stylist at G's is good...so if you try one and didn't like the service, I'm sure it's someone there that can give you the exact look you desire!

Service can be pricey, but it's well worth it.

After moving to NY from the midwest the excitement left shortly thereafter when my search for a new salon began. I found G's driving by.
They made me feel comfortable. The assistant began the process while G supervised. It was a patient process, no rushing --ever. G completed the color with hi-lites. He achieved results that I haven't been able to create since I went natural!
He made me feel like such a beautiful woman with his superb technique! It was closer to a spa experience rather than just a salon. The assitant made me feel comfortable and secure. My hair color is so Hollywood! I can't go anywhere without someone asking where or who does my hair. New salon found painlessly!

My hair was so damaged and I've been looking for a salon that I trust to repair it. A friend recommended G's without ever visting it and I decided to try it out. Charleen was great. She gave me a great cut and some great tips on how to restore my hair. The dress code is very professional but the atmosphere is very friendly. I highly recommend this salon to anyone who is looking for a place that'll truly have you walk out satisfied.

I had been looking for a salon to care for my natural hair for years. I found this salon on citysearch, stopped in and was not disappointed with the results. I recently tried extensions for the first time, and the stylist Shawn is excellent. Very professional, focused and proud of good work. I've received so many compliments and I feel great. I'm so glad my search is over!!

I walked in and based on the professionalism, courtesy and knowledge of the employees, made a decision to have hair extensions done by a stylist named Sean who was not in. I made the appointment, discussed cost and awaited a call from the stylist (Sean). Sean contacted me and we discussed what hair I needed to purchase, what look I wanted, my lifestyle, career, etc. In order for him to get a better idea of the versitility needed. When Sean completed my hair extensions, they were amazing. I have received compliments from everyone I know and even strangers that I don't know. Although the prices are a bit steep and even (1) bag of hair costs $84 (I needed two). I spent approximately $560 for the relaxer, conditioner, extension process, cut, hair and tip, but to hair such a realistic outcome, pleasant stylist (Sean) and atmosphere, I will definitely return to have it done again, as well as go to Sean and this salon for maintenance. No one can believe I even have hair extensions! -- Linda in Brooklyn
