LOVE CITY HEALTH CLUB!!!! Best gym value in Ithaca. This place is such a breath of fresh air. It may not be a slick, brand new gym but it's clean and the equipment is in good condition, The staff is Awesome (always genuinely friendly and interested, supportive, and really happy) they actually care about the customers rather than some sales quota. They've got all the goods: many cardio machines, lots of free weights and machines, areas for stretching, a variety of inspired classes, And the fellow gym members are real people just doing their thing. But perhaps most importantly, it's what they don't have that I most appreciate... Namely, pretension, snobbery, or strutting beefcakes. For the price, this place is soooo worth it.

I've tried every health club that's operated in Ithaca for the last 20 years, and I keep coming back to City Health.

Compared to the biggest health club in town:

-it doesn't have as much equipment
-the equipment is not as high end
- things aren't sparkling new, and there are some longer term maintenance issues
- simple repairs seem to take too long to be completed (although there's always another similar machine available.)
- it doesn't have trainers roaming the floors
- it doesn't have an on-site cafe

But:

-it has very good equipment, and all the equipment anyone but a professional body builder will need
-it has full size lockers rather than annoying half-size lockers, and far more lockers per member, so you won't be constantly fighting for space when changing
-it has the same number of showers for 1/6th as many members; no waiting for a shower, and you're much less likely to contract athlete's foot, planter's warts, and other skin infections than at the other place (I wondered why so many people were wearing sandals into the shower, until I contracted one myself.)
- it has a better aerobics/floor exercise program (Body Pump)
- it has a more relaxed atmosphere; people aren't fighting for access to machines or showers.
- it doesn't attract the jock crowd
- it's within easy walking distance of the Commons, restaurants, and pubs for after-workout socializing.
- parking is never a problem, and you don't have to fight the traffic on 89/96.

And: It costs half as much, and the conditions for putting your membership on hold while you're away aren't as restrictive.

In summary, City Health isn't perfect, but it has all you're likely to need or want. If you're aspiring to be one of the "beautiful people", go to the other club. If you want a good workout to get or stay in shape, a good value, and a convenient location, CHC is for you.

Pros: good but not state-of-the-art equipment, easy access and parking, atmosphere, value

Cons: maintenance issues

Contrary to the earlier review posted to this site, it's really not a bad place at all. It's relaxed, has just about everything you need, lots of classes, and a nice staff. Sure, it's a little worn looking in parts, but there's really nothing wrong with it. Certainly, it's preferable to one of those glitzy, excessively loud, overlit, industrial-looking places you see so many of, these days... One caveat: They really need to repave their parking lot. It's like a crater-filled battlefield, in places...

Pros: Comfortable non-threatening atmosphere. Most everything you need.

Cons: Parking lot is in sore shape.

Don't be confused by the pink out of date building, the staff at City Health Club are extremely knowledgeable and friendly and the equipment is much more up to date than the building. Members are greeted by name as they enter the club and staff is usually available to answer questions about machines and workouts. The posting of local new and events as well and personal updates of members and their families contributes to the friendliness of the club. A variety of classes are offered and again the instructors are very fun and friendly. If you are looking for a small, hometown club, this is the place.

This place is a dump! and unfortunately-they are also liars. After promising a full refund by the end of the summer if I wasn't happy with the gym, they called me a liar, and professed that they had never promised such a thing. Don't ever go tho this gym-they have no clue, no integrity and no pride!
