1 Stars: Horrible (by thegooddevlin)

caeser salad good, lobster bisque ok, crabcakes, ok..
2 prime ribs ordered medium,, 1 came out medium well, the other med. rare,, HELLO, i thought i was at a steakhouse, and they cant even fix steak!.
the salmon was dry, tasteless, had to add a lot of salt and pepper. .. green beans were cooked in just water, no butter, etc., if you dont like taste, then you'dlike this place,
otherwise, i'd recommend mcdonalds.. even ketchup cant save these pitiful steaks.
if anyone thinks these taste good, then you have a bad taste, and i'll never go anywhere you recommend.

to add to all this, the service was horrible, i got better service everywhere else i went to eat, including MCDonalds (which i hate), but got a coffee there!. while in n.y.

ever heard of a waiter bringing you a bottle of unopened wine, leaving it on the table for you to open? well,
if not, then go here, b/c it will happen to you!

Maitre D' offered us desserts, etc., at this point we were done, and i vowed to him to let all my peeps know not to go there.. he begged us to come to lunch the next day, no way jose, keep your crappy food, and sell it to the guinea pigs that are in awe of the ugly red checkered table clothes, rude waiters, and inconsistent cooking.

Do not patronize this place

1 Stars: Worst restaurant I've visited (by Janeth)

Maitre's was rude, waiter was rude not friendly at all , we had to ask for bread and water because it was not offer to us. Not toppings were offered for baked potatoe we had, and on top of all this the waiter impose a 20% tip on our bill, like he had done a good job with our business.

1 Stars: Disgusting! Do not go. (by cyrilthottam)

This place is horrible!!!! My girlfriend and I stopped in for lunch before a show yesterday and encountered one of the worst restaurant experiences we have ever had. The interior of the restaurant is decrepit by design and the slabs of beef at the entrance are an acquired taste to say the least. The bloody mary I ordered tasted like battery acid and the filet mignon that my girlfriend ordered and the burger I ordered (both medium) were burned very well on the outside and gushing cherry red on the inside. To make things extra special the elderly waiter as he delivered the food said " this is a very nice lunch for her (pointing to my girlfirend) but too bad you had to get the cheapest thing on the menu....." Since the old indian waiter spoke horrible english and I could tell he wasn't trying to be mean but making a very bad joke, I asked kindly for the manager to explain my dissatisfaction with his employees' comment. The manager was extremely apologetic but didn't seem surprised and was resigned to accept his employees incompetence / rudeness. Gallagher's steak house is disgusting. Do not go!!! Do not go!!!

1 Stars: A LOUSY PLACE FOR OUR ANNIVERSARY DINNER (by easyg1)

What a major disappointment!! I wasted a hundred bucks. It was our 44th anniversary, dinner followed by "Billy Elliott." When I made reservations, I said it was our anniversary. It went ignored. I'll never go back to Gallaghers again. We were barely greeted by a maitre'd, who acted as though we were bothering him. No smile. Tried to seat us in the bar. We said, no, the back room, which was almost empty. He seemed offended. My steak was small, tough. The service was lousy. The maitre'd should be working as a bouncer at a dance club. The steaks were laughable. Stay away from this place. Fast food is preferable. Gallagher's is living off its name. By the way, "Billy Elliott" was terrific.

1 Stars: Not worth the time or money (by waymorfun)

Went to celebrate my birthday, wanted a steak and this place was highly recommended, never again.
I saw the waiter once, when he took the order, never came back, someone else delivered our food, if you want to call it that. He actually threw if on the table on his way by. Of course he got two of the orders mixed up but since he didn't stop we couldn't tell him. Had to go looking for someone when we needed drink refills and the bill.
Maybe the worst part of the evening was the food, they have this amazing meat locker near the front door and a big wood fired pit to cook these great pieces of meat but they ruined them. Two of the steaks were burnt on the outside, crispy, but not even warm on the inside. The one that was supposed to be medium well was bloody but at least warm. Since no one ever thought to ask us how our meal was nothing was done to fix it. We paid the bill and left with most of the food still sitting on the plates and still no one asked.
I know this is New York but this was ridicules.

5 Stars: Excellent Meal (by SteveAC)

I come to NY fairly often, and one of the places I enjoy eating at the most is Gallaghers. If you want a good meal, and and even better steak, come here, you won't go wrong.

5 Stars: Only a tasteless hack wouldnt like this restaurant (by shootwillus)

I was at Gallaghers approx 2 years ago. My friend and I walked in off the street, no reservations needed. We had never heard of the establishment before. We were lured in by the dry aged meat in the window.

The meal was fantastic. Ox bone soup was superb. I had raw oysters...ridiculously fresh. The gin martini was perfectly constructed, expert bartending. The NY strip steak was a platonic ideal. Service was fantastic.

To those persons that did not appreciate the experience or thought the food was lack luster...please contain yourselves to a local sizzler. Your opinions are truly ridiculous. From gallagher's checkered table clothes to their decor which emphasizes the history boxing and horseracing, this is truly a man's steak house.

Just what I like: Big juicy steaks, very tasty sides, served in a comfortable, relaxed dining room by a very knowledgable waitstaff. Yes, there are many NYC steakhouse but Gallagher's is always a favorite.

1 Stars: The Worst Service Ever (by christie99)

Went to Gallaghers to celebrate our last night in New York on 6/12/08. One particular member of staff who seemed to be our head waiter, when asked a question about ordering was extemely rude and kept repeating "Menu", "Menu" each time a question was asked. He didn't want to help, he just wanted his menu back. He was extremely rude and stared at us throughout our meal. When we finsihed eating he overtly stared at us again while we worked out our bill and made no effort to conceal his rudeness. For such a revered establishment we were disgusted by him and would never go back there again. By the way, it was in the small section of the restaurant behind the meat -aging room. You know who you are and hopefully your boss will too. A dining experience ruined by an arrogant jumpted up waiter.

I've been to Gallagher's many times. They have great steaks and sides and a very good wine list. They also have good service and a nice atmosphere. Great for business lunches or to go with the family. Always have a fun time at Gallagher's!

Yes the place is old, but that is what gives it so much charm. It is a huge Giants and Yankee hang out. Food was very good, steaks were cooked perfectly. service was excellent! Wait staff definately new what they were doing and talking about!

5 Stars: Great Steaks (by spencerty)

I agree with the majority of the reviews here. Gallagher's is a great NYC steakhouse. Fine cuts of beef, cooked perfectly to order, delicious side dishes and a helpful staff. Very good wine selection and a convenient midtown location make Gallagher's a great choice.

My friends & I went to Gallagher's on recommendations from friends. We found the waitstaff to be attentive and knowledgable. The wine list was good but let's face it, the reason you go there is for the steaks and they did not disappoint. Excellent cuts of meat cooked to perfection, served with very tatsty side dishes. Highly recommended.

I've been to Gallagher's many times over the years and the steaks & prime rib are consistently good. The sides are also delicious. There's a reason they've been around for a very long time and that is because the quality & taste of their food is very high. Been there many times and will continue to go for years to come.

2 Stars: Not as good as the competition (by Mark A.)

I eat in Manhattan steakhouses just about every month, and was at Gallagher's in November, and I was very disappointed. The steaks were good, not great. The place is old and run down, which could be part of the charm, like Keens, but it wasn't, and the waiter was indifferent and inattentive.

With a dozen great steak houses in the city, you really don't need to go to Gallaghers.

My experience at Gallagher's was really good. Friendly atmosphere. Really nice staff, me and my fiance talked to the waiters and they even gave us tips on broadway shows. The lunch menu was really good, specially with the CAB steak option.
Me and my fiance liked it so much that we went there again, for dinner, when the ribeye was fabulous.

2 Stars: Horrible wait staff (by james2079)

First of all, I have never experienced a more rude wait staff in all my life. I've traveled all over the United States and the world, and not even a low-rent McDonalds could undercut this place on lack of service.
A waiter stood over us after the meal demanding to be tipped an astronomical amount. I had to speak with the manager before I left.
The food, to be fair, was good. The steak was big, the spinach creamy and the mash potatoes were wonderful.
But I wouldn't recommended this place unless you want to sip on the same drink for 90 minutes or just have a thing for being treated rudely.

5 Stars: More Then Great Steaks! (by cynnamoongirl)

I attended a reception showcasing the private Trophy Room?s new menus and it was more amazing then I could have imagined. Most of these types of events pass a few appetizers around and that?s if you?re lucky to get near the server. But this event had a seafood station, carving station, platters of international foods, passed appetizers including steak, and fabulous wine and drinks! The ambiance of the room is warm and inviting with walls covered in photos, dark wood and a full bar. The servers have been there for years and know what they are doing and still are able to smile while doing it. If anyone needs to book a private event, you should definitely hold it at Gallagher?s.

5 Stars: Best Food, Best Staff, Best Experience! (by jox2)

I've been familiar with Gallagher's for years now, but have only experienced the Las Vegas location so far. Friendly staff (in Vegas!?), great food and wonderful ambiance! Due to my work needs, I have also been in contact with the NYC Gallagher's and can say that every time I've called over there, I am always spoken to in a courteous and professional. If the service and food are as great and the friendly staff over the phone, then I know that this restaurant is the best steak house from coast to coast!

5 Stars: Great Steak, Very Good Service (by bbgreenfeld)

Went to Gallagher's on a recommendation from friends who have eaten at many of the NYC steakhouses but always put Gallagher's near the top of the list. Now I know why. The restaurant had a great NYC feel to it and the service was attentive without being bothersome. Our cuts of meat were the best and were cooked perfectly. The side dishes were also very tasty. No room for dessert, although they looked quite tasty, maybe next time. Highly recommended.

5 Stars: Wonderful atmosphere (by bunny48)

My daughter and myself arrived on a wet Monday evening about nine o'clock having been on the top deck of the night-time sightseeing bus. We had no booking and chose the restaurant because it was next to our hotel and we wanted a steak before we returned to Scotland-even although we have wonderful meat! We loved the place. We were seated at a good table near the bar right away and our waiter although fairly dour (sullen!) to begin with soon showed a certain warmth when we ordered. The Ceasar salad was fresh and tasty. Our steaks with fries and onion rings were to die for......the wee glass of red was'nt bad either! If it wasn't rather far from Glasgow we'd certainly be back.

3 Stars: Horrible service, great steak (by shmoot14)

When I first arrived a few minutes early for my reservation, the waiters and host completed ignored me for almost 5 minutes while I tried to get someone's attention. When the host finally bothered to greet us, he rudely told us that we were a little early so we would need to wait a few minutes. The restaurant was practically empty so I don't know what they were so busy doing that they couldn't at least seat us or give us a menu to look at. Once we finally sat down, the service was average. The waiter took our order fine and wasn't rude, but he was by no means especially friendly. The food, on the other hand, was great. The steak and apple pie were great. Overall though, I probably wouldn't go back to this place because I could find food just as good at another restaurant with much better service.

2 Stars: past it's prime (by rapalje)

This is one of those places that seems to be resting on a reputation it had 40 years ago. When you walk in you see pictures of has-been celebrities from 50 years ago, and a case of molting meat (the aged steak.) If you've ever been to Florida and have been sent to "that seafood restaurant on the water" that all the tourists go to but the locals avoid, you'll know the feeling of walking into this place. It feels old, neglected, almost forgotten in time.

The menu was nothing special, very expensive, and the food itself was only average. The waiters looked tired. I would honestly expect to find Gallagher's in Wichita Kansas, not NYC. There are plenty of places in New York to get good steak and a fun environment - I woudl not classify this as one of those places.

2 Stars: Save (a lot of) your money (by stormythecat)

I've been to most of the steakhouses in NYC and this was far below them. The waiter was unattentive and grouchy, each of the three steaks in our order were tough and not tasty. Furthermore, the two sirloins ordered medium were served very rare. The side dishes were bland as were the desserts.
Be wise and spend your money at one of the other steakhouses.

1 Stars: Stay Away! (by ghamiltonetradecom)

Looked like a nice restaurant and based on the prices expected good service and good food. Sadly though have to say after a week of eating out in NY this place was by far the worst service we received and by far the most expensive place we ate at ($260 for 3 of us). The waiter delivered our food and then walked away never once asking us how our food was or if we needed anything else. Then had the water boy in his food stained apron take our dessert order who also was the person who delivered our dessert. The only redeeming factor of the night was the dessert which was very good but certainly not worth the cost of an overall horible experience. When I compained to the Manager on the way out he had nothing to say, he just walked away.

5 Stars: Great steak and service (by ttrjr49)

as a former meat cutter and semi gourmet cook, every visit to Gallaghers has been exceptional. We have eaten at Gllaghers 7 times and the tenderloin and service have been impeccable everytime. Old time ambience and worth every penny. If you are looking for a bargain, go elsewhere. If you are looking for great steaks and service, I highly recommend Gallaghers. Enjoy!

For all I've heard about Gallagher's, I expected more for my $$$$. The service was fine, our waiter was prompt and courteous. But in my opinion the food isn't worth the expense. I've had better crabcake and steak elsewhere, for a third of the price! My steak (ribeye), was flavorless. So was the creamed spinach...

4 Stars: Broadway Classic (by equity6)

I've been dining at Gallagher's since the 1970's and have always found the entire experience to be enjoyable. Most recently, my family and I had lunch there on September 24th. My wife's Cobb Salad was large and delicious. My chopped sirloin was prefectly cooked and juicy. The $20.05 Power Lunch special is a real bargain for 3 courses. The ambiance is old New York. I especially love the dry aged steaks, an expensive process rarely found in steakhouses. We'll keep coming back!

5 Stars: Been Coming Here For 40 Years (by r_jay_r)

There are steakhouses and then there are STEAKHOUSES. My parents first brought me to Gallaghers back in the early 60's and every time I am in New York, I stop in at least once. From its walls lined with autographed pictures of notable celebrities and the aged wood floor which once was covered with sawdust, to the checkered tablecloths and oak furnishings, Gallaghers first surrounds you with its history. Then the food and quality service take over to complete the fantasy. The appetizers are large and tasty and the steaks are out of this world. If you want to share in the history of Broadways first steakhouse while you have a wonderful meal with some of the cities notables, you must visit Gallaghers.

5 Stars: great food, can you find a waiter? (by wilgabe)

The food is unbelievable, but the waiters are nowhere to be found. Despite being the only people in the restaurant on an early sunday afternoon, the service felt as if there was a 2-hour wait on a friday night. The food is amazing-from the soup to appetizers and salads ( I must reccommend the caesar salad!) to the delicious steaks you wil enjoy every moment! And may I say if you leave without trying the chocolate mousse cake-you will be missing out! Whether you are a group of 2 or 20 Gallaghers wil accommodate you! Enjoy!

4 Stars: Nice choice for visitors (by chocolatesouflee)

I went to Gallagher's last night with my friends from overseas and they really loved it. Tasty steaks and wonderful "good old days" decor. the service was not so great, though...it took us forever to get the server's attention. We ordered 4 dishes of different cuts of beef and shared with 6 people, in addition to a couple of potatos, salads and desserts...came up to be $55 per person including the tip. Not so bad considering that we were in the middle of the times square. In conclusion; excellent choice for forign visitors who don't have time to travel to Downton or Brooklyn and wants to have good Amrican food. But if you live in New York, I don't find much reason to go there.

5 Stars: Best Steaks in New York (by phildavid)

I found the real New York steak house, Gallagher's Steak House. This restaurant signifies the classic old New York with excellent prime steaks. Being a steak lover and knowing the difference between good beef and great beef, this is great beef.
The staff is another New York classic experience, straight forward service with a true and positive New York attitude which makes it the real deal.
No other place to eat and experience great steaks.

I consider myself well-versed in steakhouses - this place truely legendary. Walk in and your stepping into "good ol' New York".
The steaks are as good as they get, and what sets these guys apart from the majority of steakhouses is that they take the rest of the menu just as seriously. Do try the baby spinach salad, dry-aged sirloin, hash brown potatoes and their "killer" rice pudding.

Not one person working there, from the minute we walked in, was friendly, smiled or cared to have our business. We were 4 adults with 4 kids (aged 10), when we approached the coatcheck she told us she wasn't taking the kids' coats -- that we should hang them behind the chair! Our waiter was inattentive. Gave an attitued when we requested their much hyped pre-fixe menu, had to ask many times for water, extra soda. would never go back -- ever.
4 Stars: classic (by echofoster)

This is the prototype for pricey, quality steakhouses. The steaks are delicious, dry aged (you see them when you walk in the door) and cooked well (thoughthey tend to go a little rarer than what you order, so if you want med. rare, order medium - beter yet, tell your waiter how you like it bloody, pink brown etc and he'll get it to you just the way you want it.) The waitstaff is well trained and helpful. The portions are HUGE. Have never had any problems with the prime or any of the steaks. (and if you read that they are fatty - they should have fat on them - they have to have fat to get flavor!) Here's the surprise: go for the sorbets - best we've ever had!

5 Stars: great steaks! (by mapleleaves)

All the great steak houses have their own character and understood level of formality; Gallagher's is low on the formality for the guests, high on formality for the staff. The tuxedoed waiters never let our water glasses get half full; orders were taken promptly and delivered accurately, with proper timing. Since it's in the theater district, we didn't have much trouble getting an 8:30 reservation on a Saturday. And just so you don't have to ask, the Gallagher's potatoes on the menu are three thick fried wedges, served with a house-made steak sauce.

3 Stars: Maybe it was an off night... (by memling)

I chose Gallagher's for my pre-theater meal based on the positive reviews I read here. I'm writing to prevent others from making the same mistake. The service was cordial, but not very attentive at all. We were seated promptly and brought rolls and water but then were made to wait much too long before our beverage order was taken and then much much too long before our waiter came back for a food order. The food came quickly though, almost too quickly. Our salads and appetizers were brought at the same time and we barely had time to enjoy them before a team of waiters whisked them (and our bread!) away and served our entrees. The food was tasty, but not stellar. The ambience would be clever if the food and service were better; instead it just cemented the unfortunate second-rate-ness of the whole experience.

Went to Gallaghers, had there porterhouse and my guest had the filet. The best cuts of beef I have ever had. The portions for the sides were HUGE.
