City Bakery is a pretty decent place to try, but if you're looking for an even better dessert hot spot with amazing gourmet chocolate, you have to try Chocolate Bar in the West Village!

The City Bakery is a very busy small cafe. They serve their lunch buffet style. On top of that they make the most amazing scones and cakes. The cafe is a bit cramped. The table close to one another.

Nothing better than stopping here on a cold winter day for a bowl of the richest hot chocolate I have ever tasted. Whipped cream not even necessary because just a little milk into the choco is an unbelievable treat. The baked goods are good too but just make sure you get the hot chocolate.

My long, long love affair with City Bakery is almost over. I started going shortly after they opened the old place closer to Union Square, what?, ten years ago. I've eaten at CB, on average, once a week for ten years. But over the last year or so, I've slowed down to once a month. Pretty soon, I'm going to move on.

What made CB so special for last ten years? First, their close association with the Green Market at Union Sq. CB was my Green Market classroom. I'd eat at CB to see what was new and wonderful at the Green Market and then head straight to the market to buy what I'd just eaten. I learned a lot. Second, the staff at CB was always very professional, educated, and friendly. The freshest employee would serve my coffee with a smile and my questions about the food were always answered with verve. Sure, it was tricky to eat on a budget at CB but the price wasn't so bad since I felt at home there.

In the last two years or so, the staff has turned sour. Sure, there are still a few wonderful people working there but--and I can point to several specific staff members--questions are no longer tolerated and nothing is served with a smile. Kids used to be welcomed, now they are barely tolerated.

If management is reading this, I suggest a very simple test: Send someone down the line with a medium size order and have them ask for a tray. Count the number of times they have to ask for a tray. See if the tray is clean. Look for anything resembling a smile or a kind word when the tray is handed over. It's a very, very simple thing but, IME, you have to ask a minimum of three times for a tray, it's always handed over with a frown, and half the time it's dirty.

I have no idea who is responsible for managing the servers/cashiers but it's clearly time to clean house if CB is going to stay in business. Really nice food just doesn't make up for rude and unprofessional staff.

I go to City Bakery every time I go to New York, and though the staff has become more & more rude each time, I've never been disappointed by the food. My friends & I found it by mistake, had no idea of any hot chocolate hype. In fact I think I usually get a mochacino, so it's a good balance; the heavy hot chocolate with the coffee. The breakfast with the granola, yogurt, fruit and mini bagels is really a great value IMHO; I want to say I've never paid over 8 bucks for breakfast, including the coffee.
Sad to see such bad reviews, honestly. Hopefully management reads the reviews and does something about it...

I came here because I saw City Bakery on TV show called "in your Code"
CB looked delish. So ,I finally went their for what they are known for Hot Chcoclate. Yummy right?
Wrong it was far from hot and had a bad after taste.
I was very disappointed after wating 15 minutes on line having to listen to the emaciated counter guys all complian about how cheap theri customers are. While trying to sell you four homemade marshmellow for $10.00.

This place was boggus. My friend was here from out of town so I thought we could do something fun and I had heard about the 'hot chocolate festival.' What a huge dissapointment. We ordered the caramel hot chocolate--didn't have any hint of caramel whatsoever and was to thick to actually enjoy. My friend got a chocolate chip cookie and I got an oatmeal one. We threw them both away, they tasted like they had been sitting for days! They weren't moist and weren't remotely tasty. I've made better! The whole thing ended up costing 16 bucs. We were sick for the rest of the day. Don't waste your time at this bakery. Not worth it!

Pros: good atmosphere

Cons: cookies were dry

.

I tried their hot chocolate for the first time expecting it to taste like what I experienced in Spain. It is not that similar - this is sludgy and the taste is at first sip, very good, then the chocolate flavor becomes cloyingly bitter as you sip (or chew) some more. I had an oatmeal cookie with the drink and it was more apparent how bitter the chocolate was after eating a bite of the cookie, which was sweeter. I had to set aside the cookie in order to avoid making that comparison with my tastebuds. I do have to say the atmosphere of the place is nice with the seating area on the balcony. It's a great place for people watching.

Very disappointing. For one thing, if you just wanted to buy a sandwich in the back, you're forced to wait in the long dessert and coffee line--you can't go to the register, no matter how long it's taking. It's awful, and the guy behind the counter, who described himself as the manager "John," was arrogant and rude. They appear to have some sort of exalted view of themselves that totally excludes customer service or satisfaction. Really not worth it.

Pros: They used to be better; maybe things will change

Cons: Employees more important than customers

.

To start off the employees here are incredibly rude - any question we had was responded to in an extremely condescending manner. the food is overpriced and has obviously been sitting out, and the hot chocolate more like pudding than like a drink. take your money elsewhere!

I like Marie Belle's hot chocolate ten times more... It's not as sweet as City Bakery's, but just as thick.

I used to like City Bakery. Their servers used to be friendly and greeted me. These days, their staff seems so unhappy. There's just a bad vibe there.

Too bad, cause I used to make it my routine to have my breakfast there before work.

And yes, their salad bar is overpriced!

Cons: prices, vibe of staff, overrated hot chocolate

the pretzel croissants were great but everything else was so-so. i really didn't like the hot chocolate - it was just much too thick to drink and i'm a chocolate lover. me and my bf ended up throwing out 2 cups of it. what a waste. the buffet sounded good but looked like it was sitting out for hours. overall, wasn't too impressed.

The best hot chocolate ever. This is not for those folks raised on watered down Swiss Miss. This hot chocolate is as good as my favorite cafe in Paris except maybe better because there is nothing like City Bakery's homemade marshmallows!! Yummm.
I walked in with two friends not knowing what to expect. It is a bit pricey but way worth it. We took a bit of everything. I did not taste one thing that I did not love. We were discussing taking the subway from the office in Soho to get lunch a few times a week. City Bakery, could you please open in Soho? I would just die!!

We waited for months, and it finally opened on Wednesday at 12:30. The salad bar was beautiful, and I took a fairly small amount of my favourite grilled veggies, no lettuce or spinach, but my bill was still $11. On Wednesday the salad bar was $12/lb, today (two days later) it had gone up to $16/lb (mac and cheese and sliced fruit are apparently $10/lb). Thanks, but there's a huge Whole Foods about 1/2 mile away- they have a very extensive and high quality cold and hot salad bar priced at $7/lb and a great prepared foods department. The parking at WF is much, much easier than at Brentwood Country Mart and I can do my food shopping there too. C'mon City Bakery Santa Monica, get real.

Great brunch, casual, kid-friendly and hip vibe! 5 of us in bridal party met to discuss wedding stuff and it was a great place (go early, before 10:30 with group) to have a quick meeting over great brunch. I didn't have my kids, but saw other kids enjoying their meals & thought great place to bring kids--not stuffy. Tried one of their muffins-it was delicious! The hot chocolate is not for everyone, but I really enjoyed the rich, smooth, decadence of indulging in a warm cup of melted chocolate. (Next time will add the marshmallow~) Couldn't (or felt too guilty to) finish it though. One of the girls put some of it in her coffee! The best was their mini egg salad with smoked salmon sandwich on a dark grainy bread- light and heavenly, & reminded me of delectable tea sandwiches. Going back next weekend-- all the way from PA.

city bakery is crazy expensive---no matter how i try to keep my salad bar plate light (no grilled pineapple for me), i always lay out at least $15 for lunch! but the food, esp the tortilla soup, is worth it. plus fun people watching but not too many cute guys. i love to do a shot of hot chocolate and take my buzz over to bed bath and boyfriend or tj maxipad and do a little shop shop

For someone who has never been to Spain and had the kind of hot chocolate they make there (and serve with churros), you might think this hot chocolate is too thick, but for me, it brought tears to my eyes. I lived in Spain for 3 years and miss it every day, so having one tiny cup of hot chocolate like City Bakery makes made me feel like I was in Madrid again. It is very strong and thick, and might not be for everyone, but for chocolate lovers and spaniards, it's de maravilla!!

why is their hot chocolate so thick? i could barely drink it. it really is like a melted chocolate bar! How can anyone drink this stuff? It's not drinkable. I bought a gourmet muffin ($3!) which was tasty but not enough to be worth $3. I won't be going back again.

The hot chocolate is good, rich, and a little like having warm chocolate soup. It's far less viscous than a melted chocolate bar, but it's no cup of Swiss Miss. My only problem with this place is that the food is ridiculously overpriced. The quality was not good enough for the price--especially since it is buffet-style dining.

Pros: Hot Chocolate, Fresh Food

The food was brillant, something for everyone. The scene was a bit chaotic and it took a while to find somewhere to sit without any sort of help from the staff. However, once seated (practically on top of the family sitting at the next table) the food was great. The room, although a bit busy, was refreshing in a light clean way that made us feel at ease. My recommendation is to go on a week day possibly before an afternoon of shopping at the farmers market.

I am so outraged with ppl who constantly talks about the hot cocoa here...let me tell you one thing: it's not hot cocoa it's a hot SOUP. Too thick, too creamy, and wayyy to sweet. You are not a true hot cocoa lover if you insist the cocoa they have is phenomenal...it is nothing like cocoa..

The food was ok..nothing so special. My friend who loves having Sunday brunches came over from DC so I took her to City Bakery and I must say I was VERY embarrassed...

Why go here when there are so many better brunch places?? WHY?

Yummy, if overpriced, food. The salad bar is great, and the sandwich bar has interesting and delicious offerings such as white grilled cheddar on cornbread or a grilled chocolate sandwich. The crowning glory, however, is the hot chocolate. It is like drinking a melted chocolate bar. My future mother in law is still not sure what was a better moment: seeing her newborn son for the first time, or her first sip of City Bakery hot chocolate.

The Sunday brunch crowd is eclectic and bursting with catchy energy. Food is good (I lenjoyed the buffet) and the baked goods are excellent (pretzel croissants, the moist cheese Danishes, lemon and chocolate tarts). I didn't, however, like the hot chocolate. The choco content is too strong for my taste. One sad thought is that they discontinued their famous brownies. I still dont know why.

City Bakery is my new favorite hang out for delicious treats. The chocolate chip cookies are outstanding, like a huge disk of brown sugar with wedges of chocolate. Nothing like Toll House. And the flourless brownies are down-right decadent. The only shortfall has been the chocolate mousse tart, the shell is bland. Come for early morning criossants and you'll be hooked.

the hot cocoa is truly the best in the city. the fact that they make their own marshmallows (tasty to begin with, but heavenly when dipped in the cocoa) to put on top attests to how serious this place is about quality! baked goods are sumptuous and moist, with their own distinctive homemade flavor. i'll pass on the $13/lb salad bar, but long live the cocoa & desserts!

The rest, I could pretty much take it or leave it.

But for those of you who won't settle for Swiss Miss, this is the one!!

Get your order to go, because it won't be an enjoyable dining experience, unless you miss the crowded college cafeteria days.

Beware that on the weekends, this place can be very "popular". As others mentioned, their hot chocolate is very rich, but AWESOME. Once you've tried it with one of their homemade marshmallows, you'll think other marshmallows taste like rubber. Their self-serve buffet is decent, not spectacular. Best bets are mac & cheese (awesome), hot choc., choc. mouse tart w/caramel, their tiny butter cookies, and tiny chocolate cookies with sugar sprinkles. I wasn't so impressed with their large choc. chip cookies....

The best hot chocolate EVER! I get mine pure - no additional fudge, no marshmallow. It's warm liquid heaven. It's a bit heavy so you might want to split one with a friend. The Indian Apple Pie is good too. I'm not too crazy about the buffet but it's so crowded that it's best skip the food and grab a cup to go.

We ventured out from our home to this amazing bakery, eatery, & restaurant. What we were rewarded with was the excellent hot chocolate, exceleent baked goods, and amazing brunch. The view from our 2nd level balconyish seat was great for people watching and it was a blast to see the activity that buzzed below. Definitely a must go, see & taste place... would highly recommend it to anyone

The view from our 2nd level balconyish seat was great for people watching and it was a blast to see the activity that buzzed below. Definitely a must go, see & taste place... would highly recommend it to anyone

Pros: great selection, yummy hot chocolate, people watching

.

everything here is delicious but the chocolate chip cookies are out of this world and you can even bake them in your own oven (they come pillsbury style in the back-just don't look at the nutrition guide) great casual brunch spot, too.

Pros: healthy food choices, sinful and amazing, deserts

Cons: there's only one!

I don't know what the hype is about. I only tried the upstairs section, but the food was merely adequate and terribly over-priced. If this wasn't bad enough, the waitstaff thought they worked at Nobu when they should be serving McDonald's.

City Bakery has the best croissant I have ever had. Everything they make is perfect. I love their variety. It's one of the few places where you can find not only sweet breakfast items but also non-sweet ones. Great for lunch too!

Nice laid back pace on Sunday. Went upstairs for table service but self-serve downstairs have a much larger variety and the sinful looking pastries. Anyway, I had avocado and smoked salmon sandwich and a side of organic mesclun salad. Excellent! The good quality bakery wheat bread was lightly toasted, and the fillings were fresh and well layered. The whole thing was nicely presented on a wooden sandwich board. The salad was one of the best I've tasted. The fresh greens were lightly coated in extra virgin olive oil and balsamic vinegar, well seasoned and tossed. My friend's more conventional scrambled egges and roasted potatoes were also very good. Service was delightful - friendly, casually and attentive without being intrusive. It's rare to find wait staff like our wonderful waitress. Reasonable prices. I will be returning for a lot more.
