Tantalus used to be my favorite and my husband and I would go there any chance we got. The menu was extensive and outstanding. Over time though we noticed the service majorly decline. The second last time we were there was a busy Friday night. There were four of us to be seated. The hostess took our names. Others were sat before two times. We had to remind her we were still there. I asked if there was call ahead and she informaed me there was not. So she either she forgot about us or pays to know someone. Service was slow but it was busy. I didn't think too much of it. The waitress could have been a little more attentive considering. We ordered the baked brie. Over time the quality of the dish has declined. The portion had become very small relative to years past. My husband orders the insider burger which used to be amazing and full of all sorts of good stuff. This past time it was so flimsy and nothing was really even inside the burger.
The last time we went was a Sunday. We had our children and they were probably at 30% capacity. We sat for over 20 minutes with our menus. Not one person came over to greet or acknowledge us or at least take our beverage order. The owner was there. Most of the staff was huddled talking in back. We left. Two strikes. My husband will never go back again.

For the unfortunate person below (Amy Z.), you are complaining about nothng. I've gone to Apple Bee's and have waited an hour to be seat and then another hour and a half and given food that wasn't even worth the money. Tantalus is a high class restaurant that sees hundreds of orders a night. If you decide to come in on a friday or saturday night your asking yourself to wait, especailly if you come in between 6-8p.m. This can be easliy be resolved, CALL A HEAD! It's not that hard to call the restaurant before you leave so you can have your name on the list before you get there. As for waiting for food, look around you because if there's an hour wait to be seated, then the restaurant is FULL. The kitchen can only produce so much food at one time. Don't rely on her one time mis-hap because as you can see all of the other reviews seemed to enjoy there food and sevice. Tantalus has amazing, unique food that gives your taste buds a new flavor every time you go there.

I really like coming here. This place is a no-brainer for dining in East Aurora without spending a mint.

Pros:The food. I had a blue crab dish that was to die for here. There are so many choices, I try something new every time I dine here. Everything is excellent.

Cons:The decor is a little dark and sparse, I can see what they are going for (modern and hip), but it comes off as cold and gloomy. The service is very slow and the servers are un-attentive and look like they'd be somewhere else.

If service improved, I would give it 5 stars. The food is very reasonable for the quality/quantity served.

Arriving from out of town on a Tuesday evening to Go to "Viddler's" up the block. My friend and I thought we would grab a bite to eat. We chose "Tantalus". As soon as We cleared the door, received a warm greeting. The server brought us a "library" of daily specials,as well as an extensive menu...(all food items clearly explained) by our knowledgeable server.. While waiting We were given Artisan bread as a starter (Awesome). Ordered Artichoke Dip (Awesome) and two sandwiches (Fresh Roasted Chicken & Classic Ruben) Absolutely blown away by food Quality and Service! I'm a retired food service exec.,and I'm very critical of standards...The owners (John & Laurie) came from a sales background...absolutely amazing what they have accomplished here. I can't wait till our next visit...Mark & Sue (Buffalo & Grand Island New York)

There menu is so wide it is hard to get through. Thursday is Mexican night which is just phenominal. Most of their food is home made and not processed. The curry soup is teriffic. The service is amazing. The wait staff is so attentive. Their food is very reasonably priced as well. We had dinner for three including wine for under $50.00 Go early especially on Friday and Saturday because it is always packed.

Pros: Food, service, ambience, price

Cons: always busy except at 5:00 in the afternoon

Tantalus, in the converted Griggs & Ball building, has a comfortable feel. It can get loud due to the hard surfaces inside, but a high volume can add to the excitement of a night out with the right dining party. It has an eclectic yet understated ambiance which makes it an appropriate atmosphere for almost any group/party, from families to dates.

The food, with a strong Mexican and Southwest influence is generally very well prepared. There are also many non-traditional and inventive pizzas, of the rustic crust variety. (Don't come here looking for your basic pizzeria pizza - you will be disappointed.) The specials list is always long and has the most inviting dishes... I typically order from the specials list. Good selection of wine and beer.

Tantalus has expanded this year, taking over the space formerly occupied by a men's clothing store that went bust. With this additional space, they have added a full-sized bar which is worthy of a trip just for a cocktail if dinner is not on your schedule. Previously, only a tiny bar was to be found, and it was not a place to linger, but simply to place a drink order while waiting for a table.

And since I mentioned waiting for a table, I have to mention something I have done a good deal of here... waiting. The service was known far and wide as being terribly slow. It practically became a joke with our friends. Yet, we returned there, time after time, telling ourselves that if it wasn't for the slow service, the place would be almost perfect. On one trip, the owner, sensing a melt-down with the bunch of kids our party had, offered them an impromptu kitchen lessen on pizza making. Major props to him for his friendly approach and trying to divert the kids, and giving the grown-ups a welcome break.

Since the expansion, it seems that the service has actually gotten better. Hopefully this is the start of a new trend and they finally licked what seemed to be their only substantial problem!

PROS: Well prepared and interesting food, friendly staff, comfortable atmosphere
CONS: Slow service -- but there is hope! It seems to be improving.

What more can I say? This place is OUTSTANDING. It had been open for about a year or so before I went but ever since my first trip, it has been pretty much a friday evening tradition. Very nice "everyday" menue and and enormous list of daily specials. The Bacon Spinach Fettucini is on the regular menue is one of the best and inexpensive (9.95) items.

The owners have an amazingly profound knowlege of Northern Italian cuisine and some incredible vegetarian fruit platters. Check out the
Chinese Dragon Salad or the Spaghetti Carbonara. This is truly a family style restaurant that has sprouted in a desert of bad restaurants.
