Came here for dinner during Summer Restaurant Week 2010. I'd expected the SRW menu to highlight (according to their website) their classic dishes and was disappointed it wasn't the case. The food was mediocre, a bit too salty for my taste. The sauteed chicken livers were surprisingly good. I had the salad, chicken parm and raspberry panna cotta. The desserts were the highlight of the meal. Service was friendly and quick.

Pros: fast, efficient service

Cons: Menu choices

3 of us went during restaurant week. Clearly they operate a "class" system for restaurant week. Ordering from the A la carte menu gave you a nice table in the back, "restauarant weekers "gave you a table in the freezing cold front of the restaurant.
Menu was very limited and did not really give a true reflection of the dishes from the main menu
Starters were OK, main Pasta dish was bland, deserts were good..Apple pie was delicious

Would I go back and spend $60-$70 for a meal. NO

Pros: Ambiance, Flowers

I didn't like the dish I got, but I may have been happier with something else. I picked the Restaurant Week veal "with herbs," but it was mostly with anise and I don't like meat with anise. The tiramisu was very good, but the apple tart was chewy and unappetizing. Also, it started getting crowded at 7:30/8, and I guess they turned the heat off so it didn't get too hot in the rest of the restaurant, but by the window in the back room it was freezing. If I went back ever I'd try a different dish and see if it's better, but I was not too impressed this time.

If you want to impress someone on a date, take her here. The place was so romantic with beautiful decor and fresh cut flowers. I loved the salmon and the drinks were great. AA+++ in my book.

I sent my group of visitors there; they liked the food (especially pasta), atmosphere and the service. When I caught them it was 11.30 pm and the waiters were cleaning up the tables. There was noise while they are preparing for the next day. The waiter asked to clean up our table and I made a kind comment that they would kick us if we stay more (we were the only table at the back side). The waiter apologized and told the reason of the pack up. Ten minutes later a Champaign appeared for apologizing in a better way. (Very very professional management). Then I told that my friend had a birthday that?s why we are not hurrying and keeping the conversation, then again about ten minutes later the birthday cake appeared to the table. We left with a very good feelings about the place and forgot everything about the noisy pack up process. You can take your friends, being sure that they will enjoy the night.

Il Cantinori came through in a big big way. I celebrated my birthday there and I couldn't have been happier with the experience. I was frantic to find a restaurant that would accommodate my growing party size from 9 to 11. My bf called at 7:30 pm on a Saturday night and asked for a 9:30 reservation for 11 ppl. Miraculously they could! The evening turned out perfect as we had the best table in the back of the house. Every one was more than pleased with the food and service. For a big group, the food came out in a timely manner and service was impeccable. At the end of the meal I was serenaded the happy birthday song by the staff who were also opera singers, and topped it off with breaking some plates. I highly recommend this restaurant for celebrations, big groups or even a romantic date night. You will not be disappointed.

Pros: Great for Groups, Warm service

I love the food at this place. Every course has fresh ingredients and the menu changes constantly. I've been for both lunch and dinner and the food is always great. Service during lunch is usually slow even though they're not busy compared to dinner. However, all the servers are nice and sweet and the last one gave me a big plastic container full of cookies to bring back to my co-workers. Awesome. Love this place. A neighborhood gem.

Though I've heard mixed reviews, I found the entire dining experience to be top-notch. Warm, comfortable and inviting, the dining room captured an authenticity that most can not. The wait staff was absolutely charming, piling compliments on the female diners and bringing small treats from the kitchen, compliments of the chef. The food itself was also quite good, from salad to dessert. I would highly recommend this as one of the best Italian dining experiences in the city.

I had high expectations based on other user reviews, but the food was very average. Granted I went during restaurant week, but I went with a group of 4, so between us we had everything on the menu, and nothing was at all impressive. The best dish from all courses was probably the mushroom salad. The sausage rigatoni was very bland with a sharp spiciness. It wasn't bad, but I've had much better at neighborhood italian restaurants (malatesta, nonna, bettolla to name a few). The desserts on the other hand were very generic and tasted like they came from a supermarket deli counter (we had the apple tart and tiramisu). The wait staff was very pleasant, and the ambience was nice. We sat in the front room which was okay, but not nearly as charming as the back room. Overall, I don't think that I will go back, but it wasn't bad, just not memorable.

The restaurant is very romantic but its also a great place to go just with friends. The staff has a such a great attitude. The food was absolutely delicious. The desserts are to die for. And I love the fresh flower arrangements in the Restaurant (even in the ladies room).

Incredible food. Romantic ambiance. Great wine. Great service. I definitely reccomend this place for a date or for a small quiet group of friends. It is a bit pricey, but worth every penny! I can't wait to go back!

Pros: Everything

I have been here twice now and have another reservation for this weekend. It's such a great diner spot and a famed NYC classic. If you are looking for a pleasant, intimate, romantic and delicous meal, this is your place. I highly recommend any pasta dish over the meat/fish dishes. Get your celeb-spotting glasses on and get ready for a mouth watering dining experience.

WIth a warm greeting at the door, we were shown to our table and served a complimentary bruschetta which was so oversalted I spat my first bite out... not the best way to start the night off. We were served water in a plastic pizza-parlor style water pitcher, c'mon Il Cant, is it really that hard to buy 8 metal or glass pitchers? As you can see, the start of the meal wasn't A+. However, things took a drastic 180 degree turn as our incredible server, Dominico explained the menu to us, etc. By the way, the place is gorgeaus, they must spend atleast a couple grand a day on fresh flowers. We ordered the Shrimp pesto Rissoto which was incredible, the Sausage and pea Rissoto with a tomato base- the best Rissoto I've ever had, and the Osso Bucco which was sesational. A few bottles of Preseco later and Il Cantinori delivered an incredible night. I just hope that they change the water pitchers, yes I know that that sounds pretentious, but seriously, if you're going to drop a few hundred dollars, get a nice water pitcher, rather than a tainted yellow piece of junk! All in all, the main courses were incredible, the service was amazing, and the overall meal was great. It is expensive, but the dining experience is really worth it.

We went here for lunch during restaurant week. The limited menu was really so ordinary, it was like a bait and switch tactic. The arugula salad was very good. I had a breaded chicken breast which was just exactly that, with little flavor. Service was efficient but not warm. Clearly they weren't interested in people coming for the lunch prix fixe, so why participate?

I agree - there are many great Italian places around, and the service just wasn't stellar enough to warrant the price differential.

We celebrated a friend's birthday there last night - it was the perfect choice! While it is a tad pricey, the ambience is festive and just large enough so that you feel they are giving your quality service. It is in the cutest neighborhood and they have the most gorgeous arrangement on the bar. This is a great place for a small group who wants to talk and catch up.

For her birthday, we had dinner there with my girlfriend on 11/28/2006. We had a great time, food was very fresh and exquisite. While we were served dessert (which came with complimentary prosecco), waiters gathered and sang for her. In sum, "pricey, fresh ingredients, good service, and great atmosphere". I recommend this place.

Portions were very decent. Here's what we paid for:

1 calamari griglia = $17.50
1 tortino = $16.50
1 pollo rollatine = $26.50
1 rissotto funghi = $24.00
1 fruit tart = $8.50
1 pannacotta = $8.50
2 glasses of prossecco = $19.00

With only a few exceptions, there is very little reason to go to an Italian restaurant in New York city that charges more than $15 per entree on average. Unless you are specifically looking for immaculate ambiance and a possible celebrity sighting, the marginal return over that $15 really isn't very high.

Il Cantinori is one of the places I think of when I say things like that. The food is quite good, I agree. But really, there are a lot of places within walking distance that have comparable food and better pricing. What does the 30% premium get you? Above average service and the possibility of seeing a celebrity, although people tell me those days are over (I really wouldn't know). If you haven't been here and don't really think about cash, by all means go, it'll be fine. But if you do, there are much better places to spend this kind of money.

I went to Il Cantinori for my birthday with a few of my girlfriends, and we had a wonderful time. The food was excellent, service was top-notch and the atmosphere is completely charming. I couldn't have ask for anything more. They even gave us a free bottle of champagne for my birthday. We had so much fun, I am going back there again this weekend. I would highly recommend this restaurant to anyone.

Truth be told, I am usually under impressed by Manhattan's Italian eateries. For the most part, I find them to be primarily over hyped and unimpressive when it comes to the food. Large plates, tiny portions, unimaginatively bland entrées, and ridiculous checks are usually the soup de jour during these outings and invariably annoy me, especially considering I can usually do better in my kitchen. That being said, I judge most of these restaurants more by all the other factors such as ambiance, service, crowd and other things that might make dining there fun. In the case if Il Cantinori, I found the food to be typically average, but I can absolutely advocate making a stop by this establishment because the service and vibe were top shelf. The house was full and the scene was buzzing. There was plenty of eye candy and everybody was in good form. The wine selection was subtlely impressive. If you are foodie, don't hold your breath...If you are looking for an elegant fun Italian restaurant to entertain clients, friends or whoever while spending time in the village, take a look here.

During restaurant week, it is always so disappointing to be snubbed by the servers who regularly expect those with a higher tab. So I was pleasantly surprised when our food was fantastic and the service at Il Cantinori outshined the food. Our server was fantastic and always made sure we had everything we needed. He even brought us a huge dessert platter to share rather than our own desserts for my birthday and a glass of ports on the house. The hospitality was amazing and I can not wait to go again.

I had heard from a friend that although yummy, Il Cantinori was much too pricey. I managed to get a reservation for Restaurant Week and had a lovely experience. I hadn't realized how romantic the restaurant is - low lights, candles, roses on the table. The service is exceptional as well. We were seated immediately and pleasantly surprised that our glasses of wine were generously poured. My boyfriend's tomato, mozz and basil was fresh and I loved my raddichio and parmesan salad. We both had the rigatoni and found the portions on the smaller side but delightful. The tiramisu was unforgettable! (Skip out on the biscotti and definitely order the tiramisu instead!) A quick glance at the regular menu wasn't too daunting - the prices seem pretty average considering the caliber of the restaurant. We definitely plan on returning to dine from the regular menu!

We were a party of six looking for a dinner place spur of the moment and a passerby on the street sent us here. Place was crowded but they managed to seat us in about 15 minutes at a nice round table close to open windows in front. Bartender was friendly and made a delicious "Sidecar" during our short wait. My yellowfin tuna was cooked perfectly medium rare, pasta dishes at the table were served hot and very tasty, another fish was proclaimed very good(can't remember which one) and the waiter very attentive and friendly. This was a surprise visit so we had no expectations going in, and I think that is half the game. Overall an excellent dining experience.

We had a party of 11 for my husband's birthday celebration and had a wonderful experience. The service was outstanding. We never felt rushed and the staff made us feel welcome and comfortable. In fact, before we knew it we had been there for 4 1/2 hours and they never rushed us. The food was good, not the best. The atmosphere was perfect for our celebration and I would definitely recommend this place.

Il Cantinori is by far one of the top Italian restaurants in NYC (and i've tried most of the well-known ones). From the gracious staff, to the delightful atmosphere (not to mention rediculously amazing food), Il Cantinori is always a #1 choice. The food is simple, yet perfect...nothing is overdone or over the top...I recommend the sliced steak special and/or gnocci. Is it a MUST!!!!

Early dinner... we were "greeted" by our host who was obviously busy dealing with his empty restaurant. After he found a cure for cancer we were seated. The wait staff takes great pride in making sure the tables don't rock, adjusting them through out our dinner. Ordered chicken special which was descibed to us completely different from how it was served. We were told after inquiring, "The chef decided to prepare it this way tonight." A waste of time & money. They should be reminded they are selling food.. get back to the basics.

Lunch menu felt cliched, and very small. Only 1 special: common old salmon. Filet Mignon had a cream sauce and spinach, there was something mediocre about it. Avoid glass wines -- the cabernet was deeply frightening, even scarring. Prices much higher than competition, some entrees break $20.

Il Cantinori is well past its prime. Avoid. In this neighborhood, there are many superior Italian choices (Beppe, I Trulli, Da Umberto).

I just celebrated my birthday here and could not imagine a more perfect dinner. We were doted on by the waiters all night--they brought out a dessert plate and popped open a bottle of prosecco for us, free of charge! They even gave me a rose when they came out with the bill (which was much lower than we thought it would be). Tuscan fare was delicious and traditional, starting with pappa al pomodoro -- I would highly recommend the ravioli and the swordfish. I don't remember the last time I was at a restaurant in the city where I loved every bite, the atmosphere was nice, the service impeccable and the price not ridiculous!

Pros: Delicious, Warm atmosphere, Great service

I'm biased, since I proposed to my wife there, but I absolutely love this restaurant. The food is great, and the service is spectacular. Super friendly and helpful waiters that treated us like kings, and even treated us to champagne when my wife said yes. I highly recommend it.

We walked into Il Cantinori on a beautiful Friday night when the city was packed and we were starving. We walked down Park, through Union Square and not one restaurant could seat us. We stopped into Il Cantinori and even though they were crowded, they sat us. The food was excellent, the wine was perfect and the service could not have been more attentive. I even asked the waiter what kind of coffee they served because it was so good and they brought me a package to take home. With that kind of attention in a city full of snotty waiters, we will definitely make a point to go there more often.

we went to cantinori as it came highly recommended by three friends, the praise may have been for the ambience but the food was a big let down. it is not tuscan cuisine as it labels itself. the chicken was hard, the meats unoriginal and the desserts a complete miss.... not recommended at all if you think you are going to eat tuscan food.

After hearing so much about this restaurant, I was eager to check it out. We went to Il Cantinori to celebrate a friends birthday. Although the restaurant has a nice ambience, the food left much to be desired. The calamari and tomato appetizer was just OK -- nothing to write home about. I ordered tuna steak (medium rare) for dinner. The tuna was served extrememely well done and bordering on indedible. Since I was with a large group, I didn't send it back. Desserts were nothing to get excited about either. All things considered, I doubt I will be rushing back.

Expectations were high after a number of recommendations. Too high. The meal got off to an ominous start when the birthday girl was not given her glass of champagne as ordered. Redemption arrived with delicious breads and excellent starters of grilled squid and clams in pesto. I made an unwise choice in my main of pan-seared rib-eye steak which was not to my taste, though the lamb was apparently much better. For a high-end restaurant it was surprisingly lax in the detail; the service was erratic with a cast of thousands, whilst we were grossly over-charged on the bill with a wine so expensive it should have been in Christies. Overall, something of a curate's egg - good in parts.

Pros: Attractive setting, Large portions, Relaxed ambiance

Cons: Erratic service, Expensive

One of the city's best italian restaurants, if not one of the best restaurants overall. Went there once & it certainly isn't the last time. Expensive, but worth it. The service, ambience, and food epitomize class. Good portion size, too. The carbonara pasta (I'm still dreaming about it!) is a nonpareil, and the special of the day seared tuna (accompanied by the tastiest haricot verts) were divine. The only disapointment was the tiramisu: delectable top half, soggy cardboard bottom. Perfect for a date or mature group of 10.

Not great, not bad. Pretty standard. Decent service, decent food. If you're used to high caliber cuisine, this is just another joint and won't "wow" you, but won't dissapoint either.
