This Veterans Day I attempted to call Unitys 8th Ave office at about 9:30 AM.. I tried repeatedly until about 10:15 AM ., making sure I had the correct number by checking multiple sources, I was amused and then
annoyed and amazed that a funeral home, especially one of their stature in the Harlem community, could make itself unreachable. I understand that it is a
holiday, even that your offices might be closed, however; The state of modern electronic communication being what it is,
how do they justify being unavailable to those who have lost loved ones and turn to them in their darkest hour, only to hear a ringing phone with no one there to answer?
That evening I reached an answering service who reported that Unity was closed that day but they were there to take messages all day. She could not explain however why no one was there in the morning to receive my repeated calls. If this was a deli or dry cleaners this would be acceptable, but a funeral home? Death doesn't take a holiday.

Having such a hard time with the Unity Funeral Chapel in Harlem that I feel compelled to write this review. My aunt had a pre-paid burial plan which was purchased in 2006. When she passed away, I called them. First thing they tell me is that they have no refrigeration, so either I have to pay for embalming of the body (which my aunt did not want) or they will have to store the body elsewhere until cremation. They don't tell me that I have to come in and sign papers to authorize the cremation. I call 2 days later to find out what happened to her body, and then they tell me I owe additional money under the pre-paid plan. I go in and sign the papers and then am told I do not owe any additional money. Confusing. A week later I call back to see if the death certificates have been mailed to me. No, they say, do you want us to do that? I ask if the remains can be shipped to the cemetary by Friday for the memorial service and Mr. McNaughton tells me he will call back but doesn't (making the third time he has not called me back and I have to call him). Dealing with a loved one's death is hard enough, but certainly this is not the funeral home to use if you are inexperienced at handling the "business of death."

Unity Funeral Chapel has been a staple in the community for decades. A lot of resident use their services because they serve the families with dignity and respect.
