I can't believe they didn't provide any notification to members about the closing. I ride my bike 25mi from NJ to work and used the gym to shower. I was screwed standing in front of the closed gym after my ride into the city. I ended up having to pay $25 to shower at Equinox. This is ridiculous. Problems happen, but to not communicate to your customer base in inexcusable.

If they are in fact going to re-open, how many customers do you think they would have retained if they were open, honest , and communicated exactly what was happening and what steps they're taking to resolve?

It was a good, relatively cheap place to work out. Too bad.

Pros: I only lost one month of fees

Cons: Poor customer service & business sense

After rumors of reopening, my source tells me it's unofficially official that they're dead in the water.

But practically speaking, they've been closed 2 weeks beyond the date they said they were reopening, and that was the last official communication anyone got. That's unprofessional, aggravating, and disrespectful, which is plenty reason for members to move on.

Besides that, how can we feel confident that, even if they reopen, that they won't shut right up again in the near future? If rent was indeed the problem, I don't see how that will get any better. They pushed renewals on all of us and it still didn't help.

I recommend everyone try to recoup their dues from their credit card companies and find a new gym. If you had items in a locker, try to contact building management to let you retrieve.

Pros: equipment

Cons: obsviously mismanaged

Why would I wait for this joint to reopen within a few weeks? More health department violations, lack of consistency and disrespect to their members?
My health is important for me - I'm not giving 19th street GYM any of my $$$. I'm taking my business elsewhere!

So long suckers!

Pros: it is less than $50

Cons: You get what you pay for!

I heard the same problem with non-payment of rent. As such, and with no word to the contrary, I can only suspect the worst - the remnants of any membership money has been pocketed by Tommy and the city sheriff provided the padlock. If this was just a health code violation it would have been easy to let us know what was going on and then fix the problems. I think this place is shuttered for good.

Businesses may have their ups and downs but it's outrageous that the owner hasn't had the courage and the class to let the members know what has happened. To simply lock the place up and leave us all hanging is inexcusable. 'Piece of shit' is just about right.

Pros: Great gym when it was open

Cons: It's closed

I went to Equinox on Broadway and 19th street and actually their rates are not that bad. I joined yesterday and they are giving all 19th street GYM members $0 initiation. I was suprised that the place was so big and they had a shitload of free weights. Its worth it to check it out!!

Apparently the owner, Tommy, was months behind on rent. Heard he's defaulted some other insurances so none of the members can get their money back. Not sure of the workers were in on it, but I'm sure some were and still tried to get people to resign.

Was a decent gym to workout in. Sometimes it had a bit of a meat market feel, but nothing too awkward. Yes the majority of the patrons were gay, but its Chelsea and that shouldn't bother anybody anyway. Some of the workers were pretty cool and I feel genuinely sorry for them. Some were just annoying. The trainers were full of themselves so none of my friends that signed up or I took up the free session. I'm sure they would have had more business if they didn't have their head up their asses. Plus none of those lazy asses re-racked their weights after using. Its sort of like pissing on the toilet seat. Common sense for people who should know better.

Unfortunately, just resigned last month and I'm out $400. Eh, what can you do? I'm surprisingly not too bothered by it. Thinking of it more of a pity donation to Tommy. At the end of the day, we'll all find another gym and get over it. But for Tommy, he's got to wake up and look in the mirror to see how big of a lowlife piece of shit he always will be.

Pros: It was the price.

Cons: Pretty much everything except that it was cheap.

Anyone have any insight into what's happening with this place? Last Monday (11/16) there was a sign taped to the closed/locked door saying they'd be re-opening on 11/18...a week later they're still not open - no one's answering the phone/returning emails.

Pros: Example: best croissants in town

Cons: What are the drawbacks?

Gym Closed since Nov. 16, 2009 - heard two stories as to why:
1. Gym failed to pay rent and the Marshall came in on Nov. 16, 2009 and shut them down immediately. If this story is true then I conclude that they are closed for good!
2. Gym failed a Fire Department inspection and the Fire Marshall shut them down immediately. If this story is true then they can correct their violations (hopefully) and will be able to re-open.
The first story I heard from a maintenance worker from the building and a phone call a personal trainer made to "Tommy", outside the closed gym, on Nov. 17, 2009. The second story I heard from a security guard working the reception desk in the buidling (22 W. 19th Street) on Nov. 20, 2009.

Whatever the reason for the 19th Street Gym's abrupt disappearance last week, the disrespect for customers and trainers is sad example of how not to run a business and a sends a bad message about small private gyms -- a rarity in NYC'f fitness community. The gym has been closed for more than a week without any hint of if it would ever open again. There still has been no email to clients or posting on the website about the closing. And, if the gym is closed for good, what about the members lost membership payments? Loyal members deserve better than this.

Pros: a real gym for serious workouts

Cons: bad business...muscleheaded service

I joined this gym a few months back only to find out that they have problems with the rent. So sometimes you'll show up and find a padlock on the door. Do not join this gym!!!!

If I had not been with friends from out of town I would have left. The equipment was in deplorable condition with many pieces not working or not working well. There is almost no air circulation which, even on a cooler day is tough. I dont know how people train here. The crowd is good looking but since I have a partner I wasnt interested in any action--although there was stuff going on in the men's room. Disgusting to say the least.
There are certainly other choices in the city for your work out. I wouldn't go back if they gave me a membership

I have been a member of golds gym Howard beach (still am ) over 15 yrs, i wanted a change .
A friend bought me a one month trial.
From a workout persons perspective , its not a spa its a gym.
they have the old but in perfect condition well maintained equipment that has been a bodybuilding back bone for ions of years. NOT one piece of equipment and there is a lot of equipment, was out of order. (Try saying that about golds, impossible) The place is clean , the members are friendly and everyone racks their weight! (utopia)
There are a lot of trainers and ones who even i with my experience would consider training with , unlike other gyms with trainers that look like they need trainers. I watched some of the routines they use on the trainees and they are innovative and look really cool lots of variety. When i watch at golds its looks like humiliation routines , these really look like a team effort between the trainer and trainee.
I drive from woodhaven queens at 530 and arrive at the gym at 6 and literally park in front of the gym by 6.
Its well worth the drive for me , to be in the right atmosphere and feel motivated by the many factors i have mentioned and great music not the loop music i am used to at the big name gym.
this is an honest review i love this gym jeffrey

Pros: so many different pieces of equipment working out does not get boring, they were open xmas day!

Cons: sometime they forget to put on the fans and u have to ask

.

I recently went to this gym to join.

After the tour i had recieved, I was dumbfounded.
The machines looked old, nothing special about there locker rooms and the staff seemed as if they just came out of prison.

If your the barberic type, yes you would love this gym.

But as for any decent person I would not reccomend it.

Recently I tried this gym and the air conditioner was out of order. The heat was oppressive and more so being in a basement......Professional trainers? I saw no trace of anything professional at this gym.I was under the impression that there would be a more professional atmosphere. I was under the impression that this much touted gym was going to be for me......
The gym has great potential, although some of the trainers look as if they just did hard time and that is not an atmosphere for any decent person.

I absolutely love this gym and refuse to go elsewhere. The staff are all very helpful and professional, they have modern equipment, and great classes. You won't catch me a in a big name gym anymore - this place is way better - I am now a 19st gym veteran!
