Pros: great food

Went to Cowgirl last weekend with my young children. The food was only o.k. I wish it was better. The decor is cute...and kitchy...service was decent. They had a nice menu to pick from...but the food wasn't much better than a chain restaurant.

the gravy had no taste at all, biscuits were dry and tasted like flour, vegetables were over cooked and soggy, waitress couldn't be bothered to check on us or bring a bill, chicken had about as much flavor as tofu, sausage was cooked so long it was dry, hard and blackened.

What a great place to grab some lunch. It's a place that's kind of off the beaten path with some real hearty foods that you'll definitely enjoy. The fritos chili and the corn dogs are great, as are their sandwiches and sides. Enjoy!

Uber hipster waitstaff who obviously thinks they are undiscovered musical geniuses and oh so irreverent. Note to staff: do us all a favor and realize that your superiority complex and conformity to a certain manner of dress and musical taste makes you exactly like the jocks in high school who made fun of you.

Cowgirl is a hidden gem. The food is pretty good, the drinks (margaritas and martinis) are even better. The decor is darling! I even decorated my kitchen to look like cowgirl.

Love the food, love the people who own/run it. (Know 'em personally), and the atmosphere is kinda fun. The whole Southwest influence, takes me back to when I was living in TX. Missed it until I discovered this wonderful restaurant. If you're looking for some good old fashioned Southern/Southwestern cuisine, this is the place. The prices are quite reasonable as well.

Just wish those "Stroller Moms" would understand that this is a kid-friendly establishment yes. But, strollers can be cumbersome and some "Grownups" don't want to dodge 'em to get to their tables. Bring your kids, but please don't bring your strollers.

When i was pregnant, i had cravings for their nachos, so we often ate there....The gentleman who manages or owns the place has no people manners, nor do the butchy hostesses...however for the sake of my cravings, i put up with that, just to get some decent Mexican food...Now that i have a stroller with a baby, and went back there a few times, I have never been so disguisted with their horrible attitude toward women, storllers or people in general. I was trying to get into the door, and the owner/manager (i already know his unpleasant face) was standing outside smoking...he couldnt even hold the door for me, and he clearly saw i was struggling to get in with my stroller. The hostess did not want to seat us, insisting we leave the stroller, but my baby is an infant and was sleeping, so a high chair would not do...It was 5 pm, they were pretty empty and I could not get in with a small stroller? The service is always awful, you will sit and wait for ever to get some service, and with an attitude like they are doing you a favor...Shame on them

I call to make a reservation for brunch and tell the lovely gentleman that it will be six of us and a stroller.
According to this site, they are kid friendly. But apparently only if you carry your baby.
I was told no strollers.
How kid friendly is that?????

W.Village cheap restaurant that won't accommodate a stroller...gimme a break.

Update: we showed up and had no issues with bringing the stroller to our table. The host was very accomodating and friendly. If only he had been our waiter.
Unfortunately what we got was a pissed-off, can't be bothered waiter who needed to be reminded three times to bring us water.
Burger was less than satisfactory.
None of us will be back, unfortunately.

Recently tried Cowgirl on a "margarita crawl" with my girlfriend. Of the five places we tried (including Tortilla Flats, 5 Ninth, Gaslight and Spotted Pig), Cowgirl's was the best. Simple Cuervo margarita was done right; perfect balance of tequila, triple sec and lime. Great selection of tequilas by the way. Recommend trying the Don Julio 1942; it's delicious! Bartender was attentive and pleasant. Will definitely return to try the food, which is supposed to be solid.

The bad reviews of Cowgirl that appear here are obviously written by boorish out-of-town people who do not know who to behave at a groovy downtown restaurant in Manhattan. Sometimes -- usually -- if the staff is being rude to you at a restaurant it's because you and your friends are ANNOYING and/or drunk and are treating the place like it's your living room. Badly behaved people such as these have usually watched too many episodes of S*x and the City and they are mimicking the show's unrealistic behaviour codes and have an inflated view of what Manhattan is all about. Cowgirl isn't Bungalow 8 or Lotus -- it's a laid-back cowpoke joint for people who want some good, cheap food. I've been here countless time over the past 15 years and have never had a problem with the service, the food, or the ingredients in their super margaritas. Last year I had my birthday party there with 15 friends and the staff was so nice and overall the place has a festive, friendly vibe. Obnoxious out-of-towners and ersatz Carrie, Samanthas, and Mirandas best stay away.

We stumbled upon this restaurant by accident and had to wait a bit for a table since it was crowded, but it was worth it. The fun decorations and friendly servers are just the beginning. Almost anyone can find something they want on the menu, and they have all the favorite comfort foods, on a menu that's an interesting mixture of southwestern, mid-western and traditional American. I loved the cornbread that came automatically with my entree. Unfortunately, I was too full to try any of the delicious-looking desserts!

This place ain't for your fine dining friends looking to impress business partners, but they do know how to fry up some good Southern food and even offer several healthy options, as well. The bourbon shot prices can hardly be beat in this ever more pricey n'hood. Staff was warm and friendly and my waiter even remembered my name on a second visit. I can't stop looking at all the fun things on the walls, behind the bar, hanging from the ceiling, etc. Made me want to buy a bouncing ball with a snake in it at the little gift shop and be a kid again.

I had brunch with some friends at Cowgirl and happily dug in at this homey, ranch-themed restaurant in the West Village which also has a general store featuring one-of-a-kind western collectibles, logo t-shirts, novelty merchandise, and an old-fashioned candy counter. The eight of us ordered everything from Green Eggs & Ham (scrambled eggs with spinach & scallions over ham topped with salsa verde) to Paris, Texas French Toast, andeven shared a side order of cheese grits to really get into the western mood.

There is NOTHING wrong with the Cowgirl HofF restaurant - it is what it is and excellent at that. Being a Texan, I LOVE eating here -- the chicken fried chicken or steak is awesome, like my Aunt Helen's, and the black-eyed pea salsa with chips is good stuff. The best, though, it the All Chopped Up - it's the best salad ever, and I go back frequently just for that. Also, the iced tea is the real thing, just like any place down home. Plain, simple, nothing fancy, perfect any time. Catfish, BBQ, and the Frito pie -- who are these people who say it's over-rated? What the hell do you want in a Frito pie besides yummy chili and fritos? It ain't rocket science, it's just good eatin'. The Jack Daniel's pork chops may involve some rocket science, however, bcs they are perfect. It can be loud especially on the weekends at night - but the folks are nice and give you what you ask for. What more do you want? The negative reviews here are shocking. Who are these people? They ain't from Texas...

I've given this place a few tries and there is absolutely NO reason to eat here. The drinks are bad (what is in that Margarita mix?), the place is annoying and slightly dirty and the food is really below par. So many other place to get what you want nearby.
However, I have to say I've never had a problem with the service.

I was hungry and we sat outside. The Lone Star beers came quickly. The hanger steak was recommended and was very good (with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach). My buddy got the pulled pork sandwich which was also recommended and very good (with sweet potato fries). We waited all of 15 mins for the food. We also got a brownie and ice cream which was better than I thought it would be. It was a wednesday night in the spring and the whole thing cost 55 bucks. I was satisfied.

After ordering a bunch of (mediocre) appetizers for the table to share and a ton of drinks we were told by the hostess that we were going to have to move to the bar because the dining room was for people ordering main courses not appetizers. Clearly our waiter had not mentioned to her that we were not just hanging out at the table but waiting on the deserts we had ordered to come out! I have never been treated so badly by any restaurant ever - would never let anyone I know eat here.

I live next door to Cowgirl, so thought it might be fun to try for a friend's birthday. Alas, we waited almost an hour to be seated (even with reservations) and the host actually recommended that we split our party between two tables to be seated more quickly! The staff were rude and inattentive, but I couldn't really blame them after having to deal with a glut of tourists and loud children all day. The food isn't necessarily awful, but there is nothing the chef does particularly well. The Mexican lacks flavor and the BBQ is dry. I was even disappointed in the Frito Pie, about which I've heard so much.

It's been a while since I "ate" at Cowgirl. Mostly I sit at the bar, chat with my neighbors, and drink the 'ritas! When the munchies hit, I head straight for the Frito pie. It's a fun, funky place to spend an afternoon. Great music. I actually like the corny decor. Bartenders know what they are doing.

This place is really nothing special. As one of our neighborhood restaurants, we're always amazed to see so many people eating there. I guess its all about location, which it has in spades.

The food is boring and dry, and there's better homestyle cooking to be found within a few blocks in either direction. The service is typically awful and the atmosphere is purposefully tacky. The food is overly expensive and the menu doesn't branch out even a little from the traditional. The vegetables were overcooked and the desserts were dry. There's too many other great west village restaurants to try, so don't waste your time here.

My husand and I ate there 05/01/05. Rita's were great. If you've ever been to Joe T Garcia's in Ft. Worth, TX....... let me just say, these NY maragrita's are Joe T worthy! Service was horrible. But, hey, it was a beautiful day..... good company and great drinks. We weren't in a hurry to get anywhere (which was a good thing). If anything, stick to the basics.....Quesadilla's and Frito Pie were really good.

I had an OK experience at CowGirl, but I won't go back. Service was slow and our drink order took forever (and the place wasn't crowded). Our waitress never seemed to be around when we needed her. I ordered one of the Spring Dinner Entrees, the Oyster Poboy. What a joke! For $15 I got a bun, not french bread and 4, yes, 4 fried oysters plus some sweet potato fries. While it was tasty, certainly not worth the price. I say SKIP IT!

please do yourself a favor and do not patronize this place. I was just there with a group of friends on 3/18/05. The food was barely mediocre, the drinks were nothing special, but what really kills this place is it's staff of cretinous "cowpokes." they do not even bother feigning politeness or the ability to relate to other human beings. in fact, their impolitness bordered on hostility...there are many wonderful restaurants in that neighborhood...go to them and skip this horror show.

I was told this was a great place to go to have fun so suggested it for a friends birthday. What a mistake. They have insane rules about everyone being there before they seat you and not letting ANYONE join after you've been seated, which is unrealist for large birthday/bachlorette groups. I could see if it was a very upscale place but there are pictures of cowgirls riding rabbits.... The staff was downright horrible, at one point arguing back and speaking to everyone as if we were bothering them by patronizing the place. Margarita's were tasty but not very strong. Would not recommend it to my worst enemy, in fact will probably warn everyone within ear shot to never set foot in the place. Stay far, far away!

You know the type of restaurant that's perpetually crowded, but never by neighborhood locals? This is one. Never trust a restaurant that devotes more attention to its window displays than its dining experience.
Be sure to join the throngs eating outside so you can catch the snickers of knowledgable locals wondering why you're paying $20 for hangar steak!
There's really no excuse for eating at Cowgirl when you're within a 5 block radius of so many authentic, interesting and just plain great restaurants.

This was my first time here and it definitely has a unique flavor. It has the loud, amiable atmosphere of a saloon, and the wait staff treats you as if you've been a regular for years. We went Sunday afternoon and still had to wait 20 minutes for a table (not much room in this restaurant so tables fill up quickly), but no worries! As we waited in the bar, we had Strawberry Margaritas in jars. I'd been warned about them but had no idea how much of a punch they pack! I'm glad I wasn't so loopy that I couldn't appreciate the chips and salsa (which consists of black-eyed peas! Yum!). My sizeable bacon cheeseburger was juicy but overdone (I asked for medium and the bacon was too crispy for my taste), but otherwise, it was a great overall experience. I'm amazed I remembered it at all! :-)

You will be fighting the table for the delicious chicken nachos- they are great- and the chicken/beans/cheese/etc go all the way down- not just on the top layer of chips. You won't be able to finish them either- portions are huge. Good greasy grits in the Village- beware the bachelorette parties and LOUD 20 something b'days though

With a sweet, but clueless waitstaff, it is really the fun atmosphere and comfort-food menu that keeps diners returning to this west village classic, just off Christopher Street. The best thing served here is the legendary strawberry margarita, which is simply too good to miss.

It is a bit hit or miss. If its after 10PM - don't bother. The food and service are both better when its busy. Once the rush is over, its all about closing up and gettin' home. Chicken fried chicken is still my favorite, but do order the gravy on the side unless you like your food swimming.

Pros: decent southern fare, good for kids, Good value

My wonderful (conservative Yankee) parents were visiting from Boston, during the start of my fifth and final year at Columbia. Needed to take them somewhere new, since over the past four years we'd hit all the "standards." Cowgirl was PERFECT... my parents were a bit intimidated, if not awe-struck, but Lisa and Dale got us seated as quickly as possible and were generally extremely kind, warm, and accomodating. Soon they were eating ribs and feelin' the country flava. : ) My parents are still raving about the food, which was delicious -- and now I can wear my "Don't Mess With Texas" shirt with even more pride. YAY COWGIRL! A+ all around!

Pros: delicious food!, fun atmosphere!, wonderful staff!

Cons: very busy and crowded

Can we say average (or maybe below). The bartender looked confused when we ordered wine. The service was slow and the ribs were way overcooked. They were Sahara Desert Dry.
The atmosphere is really nice and if you don't mind waiting for a drink you might actually enjoy yourself.

I used to love this place but the last time I ate here, two weeks ago, the servers were downright RUDE. They were obviously upset that we'd come for dinner at 10 pm (hello?! It was a Saturday night... and why even seat us, then?)) and they demanded we pay the check the minute they set the food down so they could "check out." Then they started putting the chairs up on the tables, and asked if they could take their tip before we were even finished our dinner. I say "they" because no one person waited on us, they all took turns while they ate their own dinners. Just rude.

Ok, as a Texan I know good BBQ. This was the pretty much the real deal. I had chili that was also great. Didn't catch up with me later either as my friends predicted with trepidation. OMG and our waiter looked like that guy from that band....

I love this place. Good solid food, cheap, and a greta place to meet up with friends. The food is good and always consistent, the service is friendly & just fine, and it never disappoints. If I'm not sure where to go for lunch or dinner, this place is my default!

I remember liking the Cowgirl---way back when. They've outlived the kitch. Poor service. The food did anything but change my life.

Pass it up, little dogies....

[management take note of the many complaints]MISS THE LOW PRICED BUFFET!!!!! don't forget to have a drink in the god awful lounge i can't stay away from! can get very busy and loud.

This is a real as it gets - far and away the BEST southwestern fare in town. The menu is an exact replica of its sister location in New Mexico - right down to the Frito Pie (don't knock it till you've tried) and a killer array of margaritas. Even the guys were drinking the peach concoction (in a jar!) and the crowd went from trendy to outright rockabilly. Get the ice cream 'baked potato' for dessert, you'll feel like 6 years old again.

Pros: chicken fried steak, fun, hysterical staff, ballsy drinks

Cons: Crowded, service can be slow

I had two really nice meals here. But then, one of my friends who had come to dinner with me and my family straight from work lost one of the shoes that was in her bag that night. When she went back to the restaurant to check if she had left it there, the hostess, the bartender, and the wait staff was extremely rude and condescending, and laughed hysterically after asking my friend "how drunk she must have been to lose a shoe". She went in the middle of the afternoon, not during a rush. After such treatment, I would never go here again.

A hoot and a holler might not be heard in this touristy take on the grub and drinks of the American West. Country music is thrummin' and drummin', but with margaritas in mason jars, the corn dogs, Frito pies and other fattening stuff just…
