Basics Furniture, though generally as overprised as any Manhattan furniture store, offers one great thing: a big selection of unusual, modern, Euro-style sofa beds.

We've all slept on the garden-variety American pullout sofa bed that makes you toss and turn all night, looking for that 5 inches of comparatively comfortable space and leaves you with a bad back for the next 2 weeks. Those things are not only bad on the body - they're usually pretty ugly once pulled out, even if some of them manage to be pretty in the closed position.

Well, if you're sick of these pullout sofas, you have to see what the Europeans have done with the same concept.

Basics Furniture has things you wouldn't dream of. In the sofa position, they look modern and cutting-edge, and can look great in a livingroom or an office. Opened up, they retain their beauty while they turn into a comfortable, strong bed without any loose parts hanging down, without any soft spots in which you can get stuck in the middle of the night.

Understandably, these things are not cheap. Most of them are leather, and they're all imported. But this kind of perfect combination of modern beauty and healthy comfort is worth the money.

PROS: Selection of great European-style sofa-beds that are good for the back
CONS: Pricey

Great furniture, but horrible service. I ordered several pieces of furniture in April, and it's now November and I'm still having to deal with these people over damaged items that they seem uttery incapable of replacing. Their delivery people, on the average, run about an hour late (and they never call you and tell you that they're running late -- they just leave you sitting there, waiting), and I had to call their warehouse manager again and again and again just to get (false) reassurances that the furniture and/or replacement part for the damaged furniture was on its way. The only easy part of the transaction was when they took my credit card number and charged me -- the rest of the time, it's been pretty much a bad dream. Take my advice and buy your furniture somewhere else.

Pros: interesting selection, decent prices

Cons: terrible service, lousy delivery time
