The.worst.place.ever. If you did not come from a religious background-- you are in for it. Not only do they shove religion down your throat but they treat the ladies as if they are in a cult. Want to watch the news before bed? Too bad. You can only watch that 30 minutes a day, directly after dinner. Want to watch a movie? Only Fridays and Saturdays after dinner and it MUST be G rated. Want to sing a secular song? Well you're shi*t out of luck. You might get written up and kicked out for that. You want to talk to a therapist or professional about your anxieties and problems? If you are not enrolled in the 1 year program you will be denied of that request. Oh, by the way- you are not allowed to talk to anybody who is considered a guest (there for less than 30 days) when you first arrive. You are only allowed to talk to the people who have been "accepted" into the program. Don't worry though- you will always be accepted. As long as you say you're not a lesbian and you follow every single one of their insane and disgustingly strict rules every second of the day. Don't want to sing in a choir? Too fuc*Ing bad. That is absolutely mandatory. That is how they make their money. Whispering something to somebody? Watch your back because every single girl there will report everything you say to a higher authority. This program strips you of your freedom. Everyday I woke up in tears because I had to face another day of their ridiculous program. Their school is filled with only religious teachings and you are forced to read disgusting things such as "why homosexuality is wrong" novels. Then you go to your job. If you work maintenance (which i had the awful pleasure of being in) you must be up at 6am to shovel snow. No excuses. If there is no maintenance work to do you will stand around for 3-5 hours pretending to rake the property. This place offers no freedom and lacks the understanding that there is a real world out there that people need to get used to in a sober way. If you teach them the ways of your stupid cult, they will be confused and unable to cope in a world that is so opposite of their program. DO NOT GO HERE. DO NOT GO HERE. Get your butt in some intensive therapy and or a rehab program that has a good success rate. Do your research. Stay informed and stay the hell away from this place.

What a loving place this has been for my daughter. I cannot say enough wonderful things about the WHH! They took a desperately self destructive girl and helped her regain her self-worth. The reading of scripture gives her a sense of peace. The chores make her responsible. She is well fed, cared for, busy, happy and healing. She attends church, cooks, cleans, learns job and life skills and is on her way to becoming the lovely young lady I always knew she could be!

With no psychiatry medications or even psychology the Bentons have performed miracles!
God Bless the staff as well. I was never a religious person, but I can truly attest to the great work being done there. Their wisdom keeps the ladies safe and thriving. I would like to say, as a parent, Thank You for saving my daughter's life!

Walter Hoving is a home for the woman that are lost and have no hope. The staff have been through the same struggles so they know what it is feel hopeless and desperate and alone. They show you love and they love you until you can love yourself. The program saved my life and taught me a new way of life. I am so grateful that Mom and Dad Benton had the vision to help people like me.I thank God for them and the love they have for the lost. There is not enough to say, I just ccan't find the words to express my graditide. Thank you Mom and Dad for all the love you have put into the women who came in and out of the doors of the home. We love you and all the angels in heaven rejoice everytime a new disciple is made.

It breaks my heart to see these hurtful reviews from some people. I graduated the Walter Hoving Home and also worked there as staff. Being on one side and than the other you see so much more of what REALLY goes on. I remember being in the program complaing about everything I could think of. Than I started to change...and get my healing...and those "things" a phone call, longer time in the bathroom, a chore...because so ridiculous to complain over. I am very grateful for The Walter Hoving home. It is my home. It is a very special place where people love you and you are treated with nothing BUT love! And the staff have all gone through the program as well and can relate to everything you are going through. It will always be so dear to my heart.

I recently sent my Daughter to the Walter hoving Home in Las Vegas, Nevada. It was a total disappointment and a very expensive mistake. The staff are drug addicts themselves and all are ill equipped to help anyone with any problem either drug related or emotional. My Daughter was there less than one week and left the home on her own with no money. They did not try to stop her & just let her go. She was in a foreign place since she is from Georgia. I am on a limited budget and they refused to refund any of my $500 plus monies. She could not even get a drink from the fridge whne she was thirsty. Take my word, this place is A JOKE!!!!!

I live in Michigan and when I was 13 or 14 back in 78/79 my dad paid for me to go to whh which I don't know how much he paid but I was not on drugs nor drinking problem, I had a problem running away from home to get away from the abuse of my mom and step father. I did smoke ciggs and I didn't stay, at that age I wasn't a bad kid but when I heard of something that sounded exciting I wanted to check it out so I was put in with drug addicts, former prostitutes who told me how exciting NYC was so me and a girl who was also there decided to run away and go to NYC wow what a tragedy that was had pimps after us, it was crazy. I got mad because I couldn't smoke typical teenager wanting what I wanted. I can't bash the place as I took off. The place was very nice and big in a nice setting. I heard someone say you can go there for free? since when? anyways just seeing this place brought back memories for me and my adventure to NYC. I wish I would of gave the place a chance as I continued to run away from home and ended up in a locked up facility for almost 3 yrs which was a nightmare. I know my post doesn't help anyone in deciding about whether they should go to whh but my advice is check it out, find out as much as you can about the place, all the rules, etc.. before you just go there. I am not addicted to perscription drugs but don't know if whh would accept me for free as that is what I would need nor do I know if I would be medically ok in that place if they don't have dr's and nurses around for people who are on certain drugs that is a health risk to come off, such as benzoes aka valium, kolonopin. Maybe I will call them and see if they can help me out this time around now I'm 44. glad some of you had good experiences and hope many more get help as God knows a lot of us need it.

My wife graduated from the Walter Hoving Home in 1974. We are married 27 years and I am eternally grateful to John and Elsie Benton, the staff of the home and all the graduates who have encouraged us over the years. It is by far and away the BEST ministry for women with life controlling problems. Every lady can go through the home at NO charge to them. You could not ask for a better gift to a woman in need.

The requirement of graduating from the home 12 months is way to long. Although incarceration could be worst you may as well be there. One phone call a day for ten min. if you have good behavior. G movies only. That does not make up for what you saw out on the streets. Besides all that is bad is in the Bible if it was taught. How can mothers leave there children for so long and other respsibilities with no contact especially if you live states apart. I think after a while women are just copping out to facing reality in the real world again and the staff is aiding them to do so, because of numbers for financial gain. There is no true teaching there, just the same crime, accusations and punishment without the use of drugs. Bottom line is The Women need to grow up and decide to be sober and work and take care of there many children, the parents of the young girls need to learn to discipline there daughters instead of sending them away to have someone else to do it because they don't want the responsibility. If you were to count the children of the 40 plus women. You could WHH could have their own army or universe. Lets look at the True picture. Those children need Godly mothers and food in their mouths everyday. They can't just run to a mountain and get away when the going gets rough.

I was at the home. It's a good place to live, but the staff has no true experience in Christianity. There main concern is money which is spent on salaries and luxuries for themselves. Thre hopes of money is based on welfare, disabilities and demanding payments from families of girls who are in desperate situations and families who would go to any lengths to get them help and eventually break them financially. It looks great to the outsider but spend two days there and see the real deal. Only God can help you, not the WHH. Everything has a price. Nothing is free including wanting help.

I was not a graduate of the Walter Hoving Home. Even though I did not graduate from the Home, I have nothing bad to say about the place. The staff was very patient, loving, caring, and believed in second and third chances. The Home is a mini world that through the grace of God you learn how to live again on God's terms. I came to the home with miles of garbage within myself that I didn't know how to get rid of. I was used to sitting on a pity-pot, and finally fell into the pot.
At the Home the Word was given to me but I didnt know how to use it. It's easy to stay away from drugs while you are in the Home: the real test is when I left.
Today I am clean from drugs, I have a personal relationship with God and am seeking God for direction. I have to say that my spiritual roots came from the Walter Hoving Home.

I am a graduate of the Walter Hovng Home 1978. I have such fond memories of the Home and how God changed my life there. The staff were absolutely fantastic and I met so many wonderful other ladies and girls. I know they are not designed or equipped with a medical model and there are places for those who need the medical model but I can tell you I know there were many girls and women who came into the Home and detoxed without the assistance of any drug. They were made whole through the love and support of the staff and the presence of the Holy Spirit. I also know woman and girls who came into the Home who were in depression or other areas of mental confusion and were scared to death at first, until they realized the Love of God and the acceptance of everyone there. They learned to love themselves and accept Gods love, find a vision and mission for their lives and I was one of those gals. I went on to college and university, got a BA degree and have had a life full of excitement, some ups and downs but I have always gone back to that first success getting through 15 months of the program which changed my life. All you have to do is read the white papers and other government reviews, The Walter Hoving Home, the original Girls Teen Challenge is part of a successful network of programs that have the highest success rate in the world.

In reference to the reviewer upset about the way in which the Walter Hoving Home (WHH) handles issues related to psychiatric conditions and medication, I would like to say that this is a *Home,* not a hospital or an organization that is especially equipped to handle medical or severe psychiatric conditions (e.g. mania, suicidal ideation, etc.). Therefore, it does not seem logical to expect they be able to meet everyone's needs if a person's needs include psychotropic medication. While I agree, however, that it may be helpful if they were equipped to handle these psychiatric conditions--but this is not the case and there are other facilities that can handle these conditions if needed.

Despite this, WHH is a safe haven for individuals who need a place to take time out of life from drugs and alcohol to learn a new way of living. WHH does this very well. And many individuals at WHH are certainly able to deal with their mental health issues, just in a different way than you might find at a hospital, clinic, or other residential facility.

If you abide by the values and mission of the Walter Hoving Home, it is without a doubt an exception place to gain freedom from addictions and maladaptive life patterns.

In reference to the other review...this person must have been kicked out for illegal means. I have been a member of this home for three years and I can say that they help many women restore their lives from drug and alcohol abuse. I have seen many women who would have not survived if not for the care and love of the Walter Hoving Home. The home requires their tenants to withdraw from medications such as anti-depressants and mental drugs to help clear their minds from years of drug abuse.

I am so tired of seeing the resident's of the Walter Hoving Home, being mistreated. People with a diagnosed psychiatric disorder are taken off of their psychiatric meds, when they have an acute suicidal or manic episode they are dumped at Putnam Hospital. People in serious Opiate withdrawal are not adequately medicated and are driven to self harm and suicidal ideation. The place should be closed down. I plan to repost them to the health Department as well as Office of Mental Health and the State

If I could give this place negative stars I would do it. I had the brutally unfortunate expirience of waisting seven weeks of my life at this place. There is no reality going there, the people who work there are a bunch of suck up hypocrites. If I had a small belief in God before I got there, that belief was totally erradicated after being there. I could go on forever about Walter Hoving and how much I really believe this place is a cult. I have been happy and sober and living in the real world, with real people for five years. Don't even consider it!!
