Went here with a group of 5 on a Monday night. The place was not that busy but the waiter seemed totally overwhelmed. Took 20 min to take our order then had no water or utensils at three of the place settings. When the food came out we asked the waiter for utensils and he proceded to settle the bill at another table and take the order of the table next to us. All while we are sitting there unable to eat! I have never seen anything like this. The food was average and the margaritas were overloaded with salt so we had to send them back. Would not recommend this place.

Pros: It was Valentine's Day and so they had a guitarist and gift bags.

Cons: The drinks weren't that strong.

Went there last night with a group of 9 people to celebrate my friends birthday. They've been there before and enjoyed the food so one of my friend suggested the place again. We were seated pretty quickly and the staff was very nice. We ordered a pitcher of Sangria which was pretty good but too much on the fruity side and not much on the alcohol. We had empanada, calamari, and corn on the cob as appetizers. The cubano empanada tasted like hot pockets. The calamari was very ordinary. The corn on the cob was just regular without the cheese and cuban spices. My friend said the corn was not as great as the other time he had it. The waiter was very good except the fact that he asked us if we wanted to refill the sangria like 3 times. I felt like he was trying to ring our bill higher. For our main dishes, we had seafood paella, oxtail stew, seafood stew, ribs, pork chops, and sandwiches. The seafood paella was a bit mushy and salty. The seafood stew was a little too sweet, sour and the shrimp was way overcooked. The oxtail stew was very tasty but the sauce is very heavy. The pork chops tasted like a bottle of ketchup was poured over it. Towards the end when we recieved our bill, I had a $25 gift certificate from Restaurant dot com that we wanted to apply towards our bill. The waiter took the gift certificate and headed towards the back. My girlfriend noticed and told me he was showing the gift certificate to everyone in the back. I felt that it was very unprofessional to do that in front of your customers. Overall I wouldn't come back again because of the price and the incident towards the end.

After hearing good reviews about the restaurant I decided to go check it out with my boyfriend. After we arrived, we were seated at a table. The waiter who took our order was nice. My boyfriend ordered a mojito which he refused to drink because it tasted nothing like a mojito, it tasted like bitter Sprite. I ordered a salad and when it arrived I had a whole bag of lettuce in front of me and 2 grilled shrimp. He ordered a paella with seafood which looked liked oatmeal, thats how mushy it was. My sald did not even come with dressing, so I was eating dry leaves. His paella tasted like rice with ketchup and the seafood was so rubber. Seemed that it was taken out of the freezer and thrown in. Our bill came out to be about $70. So not worth it!!! We were so dissappointed. And through out our whole dinner we had little fruit flies flying over our heads while we ate. I think we spent more time swatting them out of our faces than trying to enjoy our meal.

After just having arrived in New York, this was the first place we found. From the moment I walked it, the smell of the carribean fills the place. The mojito was the best! With a slice of sugar cane.
And dinner was just like home. The ambience was great with a band playing salsa.
I recommend anyone who goes to New York to stop by and enjoy a great dinner, drink, and dance!

Go there for Happy Hour - Mojitos are $5 and they are delicious (complete with a stalk of sugar cane in the glass!) The food is also delicious, especially the tostones. Great to go to with friends - the one on Broadway (by Columbia University) has outdoor seating in the nice weather.

food was okay. plantains don't come with garlic/butter sauce. didn't have too many chicken dishes. shredded beef dish was really good though.

mojitos were awesome.

cafe con leche - very average. it wasn't hot the way it should be.
dessert - tres de leches, seemed like it came out of a freezer, didn't taste fresh at all.

Ricky Ricardo would feel right at home at this little slice of Cuba, with a clientle that is reassuringly at least half Latino at any given time. While small, it's more frenetic than cosy, but comfortable enough and the food has refreshing authenticity. Staff is well-meaning and well-informed. And if there are any service glitches, they're easy enough to forgive with the modest prices. Word is another larger Havan Central is destined for Times Square area.

The food was delicious, from ropa vieja (shredded beef) to camarones al ajillo (shrimp in garlic sauce). The drink options are also great, with lots of wine varieties of sangria and mojitos. We were seated immediately despite the Friday night rush, and our waitress was very attentive. The atmoshphere is really fun, with great Cuban music.

It was the second time I'd been there, and I'd had another bad experience with the staff. This time the food was served lukewarm, and then when we were done, the waiter asked us if we were leaving yet because he wanted to use the table (he also moved the couple sitting next to us to another table so he could use their table).

I don't think I've ever encountered a more unprofessional and unorganized management staff in the restaurant industry. As for their food, its mediocre. I personally didn't think it was anything out of this world. You can find better Cuban food at other places around the city for much cheaper. What you're essentially paying for at Havana Central is ambience and the opportunity to rub elbows with the restaurant industry's finest flakes.

I'm told this place has the best margaritas every but I'm not a big fan of margaritas. The mojitos are good and the sangria is about average. The margaritas are even better on Wednesdays when they are two for one! The bartender was very friendly and so is the rest of the staff.
I don't know much about Cuban cuisine but my food was yummy and it didn't cost too much. I split a sampler plate that comes with a little bit of everything and it was perfect for two small eaters. The meat was falling off the bone and the sweet plantains melted in my mouth!!!

Not quite up to Miami/Little Havana standards, but its good. Considering how cosmopolitain NYC is, there is very little respect paid to southern cuisine- BBQ as well as Cuban. The Ropa Vieja is as good as you can find in NYC, but by no means is it a world beater. The empanadas were good, the plantains were very good and the black beans were average. Keep away from the drinks and you can eat for pretty cheap. Service was cordial and nice. Overall a nice meal and experience, not as uppity as some of the other enclaves in the area.

This place had so much potential. When it first opened a group of us went and were very impressed with the quality and taste of food. Went back last week for holiday dinner and it was disappointing. The potions became smaller, the paella was fishy smelling and the service was lackluster

I seriously don't understand why this HORRIBLE restaurant received such wonderful reviews. The food is bland, the mojitos weren't strong enough (and I'm a light drinker!!), and the service made you wonder who the idiot was that hired them!
It's horrible for big groups because they brought out all the food at different times! They sat 8 of us in a corner, which i had to sit sideways, because all of our legs wouldnt fit underneath the tables (I'm only 5'1). To make the night even better, they over charged my credit card, and took 20 mins to get my refund. I don't think they'll be in business for long, and if they do, they must have Cuban politicians supporting them...

We too ended up at H.C. one day by chance, and were back within a couple of weeks, though we live uptown. We sat at the bar both times (our preference). The appetizers are terrific, especially the empanadas and "yuca bites". The fruit caipirinhas are delicious as are the margaritas. Food was fresh and very good; service was super nice and not pretentious. Great value as well.

Definitely come to this joint! The food is good and inexpensive, the drinks were long and tall and probably less expensive than starbucks coffee..he he They are really a latin american place because latin moms give you massive food and so did they. I had to take my food and have it for lunch the next day because it was a lot. Anyway, the waiter was nice a friendly and latin as well, not like one of those places that claim to be latin bistro and they can't even pronounce the items in menu like Dos Caminos and Ideya

I can't believe I'm wasting my time on this, but I wanted to give a warning to people. My girlfriend's meal was so dry and bland she dumped half a bottle of hot sauce on it so she could eat it. The food was good - some hits and some misses, but decently priced. The white Sangria was amazing.
The problem was the waitstaff. After we received each of our dishes, about five minutes later, a busser came over and asked if he could clear our food, even though the dishes were at least half full and we were obviously still eating!
Finally, at the end, our waiter told us we would have to either order dessert or leave since other people were waiting for a table. Right next to us was an empty table that had stayed empty the whole time we were eating.
The waitstaff's behavior was so obnoxious that I didn't even want to leave a tip. Rather than a nice, relaxing dinner, we felt pressured and rushed from the beginning.

Just like the conquistadores who ever set foot in Cuba, I discovered this place by pure serendipity! And what a discovery! Begin with any of the empanadas as appetizer and move on to either the Ropa Vieja or the Bistec a la Palomilla and you will be touched forever! Finish with the angelical bread pudding and get ready to feel life as never before!
This place is really a must-come-back-to that should be included on everyone's list of places to visit soon!
