This is a great Dim Sum place. I would have to pick this one over Jing Fong as far as actual taste. There is cart service, and the waitresses either speak English or will get someone who does.
The roasted duck is excellent - but I wish it didn't share the plate with pork. The sweet buns and the "specials" fried dim sum are a great treat here. The dim sum is very standard but all good. Once in a while they will bring out some special dish, but run for it because it disappears fast.
Really, you need to spend at least 2 hours here I'd say between 11am and 1pm on the weekends in order to taste a little of everything since they tend to switch up the carts around noon.

Pros: dim sum, carts, price

Cons: lines, small choosing

Every thing was fresh and delicious - staff was very friendly- can recommend and will go back when I visit NY again.
Service was actually great!

Cons: may need to wait to get in

Golden Unicorn is a great place to go to for fresh dim sum. The line can be a bit long on the weekends, and the service can be overwhelmed. However, the abundance of food is worth the trouble and wait.

Had a recent experience that was disappointing. Very few offerings - only two or three carts with the same food cirulated. Service was not good - difficult to get water. I rated it at three stars because previously had been good - but wanted to make you aware of recent disappointment

If you're ever craving dim sum, you can find some here. There's nothing really special about the place, but it is there if you need it. The egg custard dessert is pretty good so I recommend you get that if you ever go here.

I went here last night with my best friend and boyfriend. While the food was very tasty and served in huge portions, the service has made me not want to return. When the waiter brought the check, he stood there for me to write in his tip and take it away at that moment. I tried to buy time by putting away my card but he stood strong, with his hands behind him, just staring at the table. This flustered me. I normally ask my friends for input in calculating a respectable tip but with him staring at me I just doubled the tax and wrote that down. So he immediately takes the receipt and doesn't just walk away, but stands at the table and inspects the tip right in front of me! I just found this ridiculous. That aside, the food was good and the other servers were wonderful. Perhaps I just got the bad apple but that's all I have to go on.

Pros: Value, Spacious Dining Room

Cons: Rude Service

This restaurant has waiters that go around with trays of dim sum and you point out what you would like to try. It is a great experience to try different types of food, and the portions always end up being just right. The wait can be long and the price is on the high end but it is all worth it!

Great Dim Sum, the people handing food in the Dim Sum carts are pleasant, the animals are the people in suits that bring you the check or grumble if you ask them for water. Particularly, stay away from an anorexic b i t c h by the name of SANDY PAN(name tags located on suit)...you'll make her day if you literally ask her for anything, and she yells too!

I took a friend out to dinner last night he like Chinese so we decided to go to the Golden Unicorn. We were seated right away, I am not sure who was our wait staff our order was taken by a guy in a suit, then their was another guy serving us, then their was a lady and another lady. I had the Shrimp Szchen style; my shrimp was not de-veined which I find to be very gross. Since I only eat Shrimp I couldn't order anything else. So I eat the rice with the sauce. Once we got our check the guy in the suit came back stood over us until we put the credit card in, he took the bill promptly then return and once again stood and waited for us to sign the check. Them giving us our bills and waiting for the payment was the promptest part of our service, we waited for ever for our drinks and then some soy sauce. So if you like shrimp with the vein in it then this is the place to go.

This place is consistently great, with fast service and so inexpensive. But the real pull is the pork bun. They have two types that are worth trying - the steamed pork buns and the sticky sweet pork buns. Seriously amazing.

Pros: Cheap, Fast Service, Tasty

Cons: Not a beautiful dining experience

Resting on laurels. The food at the Golden Unicorn is quality and the crowd is steady which is why they don't and wont go out of their way to be courteous overly friendly or otherwise spectacular. They don't have to, the business will come regardless. With that said, the food is quite good and it's not overly crowded during the week. This establishment is a Chinatown institution, I'd bring people here if Jing Fong was too crowded.

Certainly isn't the best Dim Sum in the city. It's not bad but this place is highly overated. In fact all the good dim sum is in Queens (and one particular place in Brooklyn).
The quality of Dim Sum in this city really needs improvement. If anyone's ever tried the Dim Sum in LA or San Francisco you'd realize what I mean.

I've eaten here for the past 15 years. In response to all the complaints about service, you have to realize that you're in a busy Chinese dim sum restaurant. In my opinion, only at shi-shi (sp) dim sum places (or at places that cater to non-Chinese) will you get attentive service. Look at how other Chinese people behave as guests in this restaurant. One yells "Hey, waiter", or might just hold out an empty teapot to a waiter without saying anything, on the mutual understanding that a waiter will pick it up and fill it with water. To the American culture, this is rude. In the Chinese culture, this is normal. How do you handle it? Just be persistent, but polite. As someone below mentioned, you are still a "guest" in someone else's culture.

Didn't have other menu items, but had Dim Sum which we thought was below average: package tasting glue like shumai, fishballs were too fishy, nothing really tasted good. Not recommended. How does this place get a rating of 9? ~~Again: this applies to Dim Sum only~~

Rude, rude service. Basically we were ignored. Had to stand up and collar a waiter to get a diet Coke! Dim Sum were tepid to cold. Noisy beyond reasonableness. Bummer experience all around. If this is "the best" NYC Chinatown has to offer, go to Little Italy!

The service is not stellar and its very likely you'll have to share a table with another group if your party is less than 6. Enjoy some of the better Dim Sum dishes in the area at wallet preserving prices.

The food was overrated and cold and not tasty! And for some reason, the smallest dishes were stamped as "special" or "large", which made a meal that should cost $20 cost over $40. The waiters were rude and yelling amongst themselves. This place used to be good. But I was just totally ripped off. Will never go back!!

Most Dim Sum eateries in Chinatown are not places where you leisurly consume food. It has always been a process of very high turnover. When I started going close to 10 years ago, there weren't English descriptions on the carts. One must understand that you are a "guest" participating in someone's culture. The food is always on point for me and my family will continue to enjoy it.

Doesn't live up to the rating. Only the basics, not too interesting. Poor layout--multistory not as good as one big hall.

Food is average and a bit more expensive than other Dim Sum in the neighborhood, but they do have a wider selection of choices. Seating is average. Service is terrible. Waiters are slow to clear your table, refill water or tea, and on numerous occasions I have seen and experienced waiters who have given their suggestions on what gratuity should be left. Several waiters typically look over the customers shoulder as they calculate the tip. Overall, the waiters are rude. Waiters are particular in who they will give better service. I have had both good service and poor service here. When I have had good service I have left 20-25% tip. But when I have had poor service, I have left 5-10%. If you do go to Golden Unicorn, please do not reward poor service as this will only encourage poor service.
