In a city of so many world class museums it's easy to forget institutions like The Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum . Located in a beautifully perserved mansion the faciltiy and grounds are gorgeous. The collection is first rate, they are part of the Smithsonian, and you will be dazzled by the constantly changing exhibitions. Yu may even consider joining so that you can be invited to the members parties and wander about more freely.

PROS: Incredible to behold first class institution
CONS: Zero

I recently went to this museum and was impressed to see how fabrics are used in places where you don't expect them. Certain areas like soil use a type of textile that bonds the soil together so that inclimate weather doesn't affect seeds that have been planted. Even tires have textiles within them to keep the rubber bound. In addition to all this information (textiles are used to reconstruct your muscles in surgery) there is a beautiful garden to rest in after going through this 2 floor museum. The facility was previously a mansion so there are details such as fire places that you can enjoy looking at. Being so close to the park is great to extend your day as well.

PROS: Lots of information to learn, great way to spend a few hours
CONS:

How can you hate their collection? You basically can't, they have the best triennal and had one of the better hotel/nomad show I've seen in the US [to say the least]. Had a great time, the Michelangelo Show earlier was great too.
