wow, i went there with a friend who wnated me to try a differnt moroccan restaurant ( I love moroccan food) and the restaurant was beautiful (set-up) but the food was just average and for such a small portion, the food was extremely pricey ! Was very disapointed and for sure i will never go back !
I'm gonna stick to my moroccan of choice : zerza. At least, the food there is reasonably priced and much much better.

The food is tremendous. especially like the lamb borek and pheasant Bastilla and cannot go wrong with any of the tagines. For dessert you should really try the Moroccan Cigarra - truly sinful. Their mint tea is a must try as well but if you don't like sweet tea - be sure to ask for unsweetened.

The decor as well as the atmosphere is unique and eclectic. Interesting Moroccan music and belly dancing complete the experience making it a magical place. Its relaxed and enjoyable, not formal or stiff like the people you will meet. Definitely worth a try.

I tried this place for a pre-Broadway meal with a friend. We'd seen the reviews and decided to try Tagine anyway b/c I'd bought a $25-off certificate from Restaurant-com or something like that, and thought it would be a nice bite beforehand and way to try a new place.

We ordered a tray of three mezzo appetizers ($18) that wasn't bad, but wasn't worth the $. She had a glass of Argentinian red wine the waitress suggested ($12), I had a bottle of Moroccan lager ($8) - both unremarkable. She ordered the lamb tagine ($23.75) which had decent texture but was incredibly bland; I had a pheasant pie ("Bastilla" - $22.95) which came out delicious and sweet although smallish, an almond and confectioner's sugar-topped cross between baklava and a meatpie.

The service was adequate, unlike that of some other reviewers here, although that may have been because we were the only diners in the restaurant shared by three staff at 7pm on a Thursday evening.

The bill came to $80.30 even WITH the $25 off; they also included (get this) a built-in 25% tip!!! ($64.30 + $16 tip). The bill came with no mention of the included gratuity from the waitress or written on the credit card slip, but it did have a line for me to add a tip.

For the food we got, I definitely do not intend to return. Too bad, as I live less than 4 blocks away.

The dancers were great fun and made sure we were given these jingly scarves. The service was great, and it was so helpful to have Toni hosting the party and directing every last detail, she also introduced the chef to us...sooo cute! We were given complimentary ROUNDS of shots and the bday girl received a bottle of Moroccan wine. I was so happy that I made the reservation and ignored the negative reviews...will return again and again. Thank you Tagine

My 3rd time I recommended it for my friend's Bday party. And service was not attentive, we were grossly overcharged! Be very careful and read your bill carefully if going in large groups. On our receipt we had 2 Watermelon martinis for $90, after my friend complained, a new receipt was generated which showed 2Watermelon martinis $60. Their menu said Watermelon martinis were about $14. We did not want to argue our bill, but all in all it was in the $450 dollar range for about 8people. I was a little embarrassed for my friends and the huge bill, since I had recommended this place. I am now hesitant to come again. After my last dissapointing visit.

This was a very cute and atmospheric hole-in-the-wall place and overall we had a very enjoyable evening. However, the food (the tagine especially) was a great disappointment. I had the lamb tagine and my husband had the other lamb (the classic, I believe). My dish consisted of 20% meat and 80% fat, bone and gristle. The sauce it was cooked in was little more than oily water with a few boiled vegetables floating in it - not very tasty (and actually mostly inedible)- all this for $23 and I was left feeling still hungry. We also ordered the mixed mezze appetizer to start and that was also very bland. It says you can choose 3 of the cold mezze, which we did, but then in reality, they actually chose the 3 they wanted to serve us- and brought our other "2 choices" that weren?t in the mezze trio as additional plates- rather misleading. The desserts were good - but only really because they were covered in chocolate sauce, which isn?t very authentic.
The 2 belly dancers came out at about 10pm, danced for about 10-15 minutes and left and that was the whole show.
There were 7 of us in our group, which was a good size for this small restaurant, and the feedback was pretty consistent - cute, fun little place, but disappointing, bland and overpriced food.

It is rare that in midtown Manhattan you will find a place which is able to remove you from the noise and stress associated with the heart of NYC. Tagine, however achieves this with ease.

Their main dish (for which the restaurant is named after) is tasty and comes out sizzling with a great home-cooked taste. Be aware, since so much goes into preparing this dish it takes a bit of time to prepare. The lamb version is my favorite... the meat melts on your tongue and is so tasty you don't even dare to swallow it.

Waiting for this dish is certainly worth it. Once you sit down, you loose yourself in comfort by sinking, and getting up is very hard. Thats ok though, as the service is snappy (and cute!).

To top it off, the dancing is great, and when they have live music it'll be the only time you want to get on your feet and groove with the bellydancers. They have a very interesting list of special events as well.

As far as I am concerned, this place is highly recommended. Perfect to get away from the stress and hustle & bustle of the city. An awesome place for a date as well.

Given that the prices are not cheap (average was about $20.00 and the meal, with tip, for two was over $100) I had really expected something better. But the wine was good, and the belly dancer was great. The second waitress that served us was much friendlier (which helped), but I think if I am ever inclined to return I would just stick to the appetizers and wine and pass on the main course.

I just held a surprise party and it was fabulous. From my first meeting with Toni (which included a food tasting!) to confirming the menu and drinks everything went smoothly. She didn't mind me calling several times to ask a variety of questions. The space was great - the service terrific! We ended up using the downstairs area - it was extrmely comfortable with the different seating areas. At first I was unsure how people would react to the bellydancing however, it ended up being one of the highlights of the evening. There was even someone available for henna tatoos. The food was great - everyone enjoyed their meal. We truly had a fabulous and memorable evening! I would highly recommend Tagine- either for an evening out or a special event.

We had 200pp at my country house where we have typically used your run of the mill catering establishment in the past. This time around, we decided to try something a little exotic but not too intimidating for our guests. Tagine, ( the owners requested I don't use their names) was great from price points, accomodating different tastes, vegetarian options, and offering some simpler dishes for our naive guests. They invited us for a FREE TASTING!! Who does that in NYC in 2007. Completely FREE no tricks, no scams! They came to see our home prior to the event, and were extremely responsive over 8mos up to the big day. They pulled through even though some guests arrived late and we had to make some adjustments to the table settings and courses. They provided the entertainment, the live musicians, dj, all of which were extremely well managed. The servers were professional, friendly, and extremely energetic. The food was absolutely spectacular, generous portions, the flavors were amazing!! Fresh tasting, not overly spiced and not salty! Even our naive guests loved the authentic Moroccan dishes. One of the most important features was their after party clean up. Everyone, including one of the owners, stayed until every inch of the kitchen and prep facility was cleaned, including the outdoor area. I would recommend this establishment as a facility for any catered event. Don't let the small size of the restaurant fool you, I hope one day they can have a larger restaurant space, but for now, go and experience this great place, your tastebuds will be very very happy.

We had reservations somewhere else on 9th Avenue, but they overbooked, so we began walking south on 9th and came across a lovely hostess outside of this unassuming exterior, but the music sounded great, so we entered, and all I can say is WOW! We were promptly seated by this smiling young hostess/waitress, and immediately given water ( which is rare in NYC) and delicious fluffy bread with some sort of dip. We actually ordered another lentil dip, it was so refreshing as compared to the over marketed hommous in other middle eastern restaurants. The service was a little slow, but the place was so busy for its size, and we were informed that the tagines and house specialties take a while because they are cooked to order. The atmosphere was charming and comfortable and the entertainment including bellydancing, was so much fun, everyone was up and dancing. The tagines were so fragrant, they infuse the entire restaurant with an entrancing aroma. Your mouth is simply watering up until the dramatic service of these small clay pots, wafting perfume of aromatic spices, and chicken or lamb, we we thrilled with our menu choices. Our party also received a free hookah, and two rounds of drinks were delivered compliments of the house to our table, as well as other tables. We will be back for their sangria tasting night on Thursday and we have already told friends about this hidden cozy and under recognized jewel of a restaurant. I have been to Tagine many times so far and each visit was more fun than the previous one. The dishes are delicious, BEST MEAT IN MANHATTAN. I used to go to expensive Steak-houses, where you get charged $40 for a T-bone steak, (yet doesn't taste anything) before discovering Tagine. Very friendly waitstaff and managers. Whenever I am at Tagine with my friends, I run into a very diverse crowd. Another reason that I adore the place, since I am a nightperson, is because they are open late and the kitchen stays open. The entertainment show is diverse as well; from Arabic, Middle Eastern and Turkish music to African and Brasilian music.
The cute and hot bellydancers deserve a seperate paragraph here. You HAVE TO see them. In one word, my FAVE PLACE. Thank You!!!!

I used to go to expensive Steak-houses, where you get charged $40 for a T-bone steak, (yet doesn't taste anything) before discovering Tagine. Very friendly waitstaff and managers. Whenever I am at Tagine with my friends, I run into a very diverse crowd. Another reason that I adore the place, since I am a nightperson, is because they are open late and the kitchen stays open. The entertainment show is diverse as well; from Arabic, Middle Eastern and Turkish music to African and Brasilian music.
The cute and hot bellydancers deserve a seperate paragraph here. You HAVE TO see them. In one word, my FAVE PLACE. Thank You!!!!

NOT SO with TAGINE, this place has been consistent for at least the two years I have been patronizing. I recently had a huge birthday party there, and as usual, the management was accomodating, flexible in their menu choices, decorating and drink specials! We had over 100 people and the owner/manager, Marisa, gave us free champagne at the end of the night and a bottle of Moroccan wine for the birthday boy.
The food is exquisite, and their Sangria, the rose and red are delicious and STRONG. The entertainment goes well beyond bellydancing, it includes folkloric and world music performers to boot. And just a small correction, although you can eat with your hands if you like, Moroccans do utilize flatware, however, you can certainly transform their delicious homemade semolina bread into a utensil, Yummy !

It will either be unfortunately empty: the gorgeous stained glass lanterns hanging in solitude, the berber woman in a large mural looking at you seductively; or, it is packed with celebrating patrons. Never have I been to a restaurant where the patrons dance as vigorously and sexily as the hired entertainment. You'll sit down, best to bring dates (Moroccans eat their food with their hands, so sensual) or a large group of friends (ordering dishes to share is great when nothing will disappoint you). The custom drinks, especially the Sangria, are amazing. The appetizers and food are the best Moroccan cuisine in the city, hands down. The homemade sausages, potato croquettes with spicy mayo, chicken meisel, and lamb tagine are my particular favorites. Sometimes, the entertainment and lounge atmosphere will distract you from ordering, but I always like to eat when I drink. The crowd is diverse- from Moroccans dancing as if they were at home, to theatre-goers, to young people dressed in glitter tops and converse. No matter who you are or who you're with, Tagine will get you dancing. The service was so slow. It took forever to get my food and when I did get it I couldnt start eating because there wasnt even silverware on my table. It took a good ten minutes to flag down my waitress! Overpriced considering you can get better service and atmosphere anywhere in the city for a much better deal !

This is a place you go to ENJOY, not gourmet. Slightly pricey (main dishes around $20) and dry, the Moroccan beer, Casa Blanca, is expensive $7 a bottle. So much for the criticism. BUT we were warmly welcomed. The bartender/waiter treated us to free wine, the free entertainment: music and belly dancing were wonderful. The place was beautifully uncrowded. We're coming back again and again. Come for a great time, clap to the belly dancing music, along with the locals, enjoy the atmosphere. You'll forget about the food. --Drink club is a roving group of NYC drinkers

The belly dancing show had just started; my friend and I stood at the door watching in amazement. The owner saw this and invited us in and made sure we were seated right away. The decor was beautiful and intriquite and there were pillows propped up on the opium-bed-like seats. Later that evening the customers actually got up to belly dance, there were live drums and the food and hookah was fantastic. As we were leaving the same man that invited us in made sure he let us know that we were welcome to come again. I highly recommend this place for anything, whether it be a common night on the town or a planned celebration.

We especially liked the Chicken Tagine, a mint-seasoned lamb called Kefta Tagine, and the Bastilla, a pheasant baked in a wrapped pastry, seasoned with almonds, cinnamon and nutmeg. Also try the homemade Moroccan pastries for dessert with mint tea. We also recommend the Moroccan wines -- especially the Amazir, a dry red that was very good. There's even a loungy downstairs. It was hard to pull myself away from the arabian princess pillows and excellent Algerian wine. It's an absolutely wonderful place. I found it relaxing as well. The only negative thing, if any, was that on Valentine's Day they were turning some people away who didn't have reservations (I felt bad that others missed out). With all the room downstairs, I think they could have easily taken in whoever came by. But I'm glad it wasn't over crowded. I had a very romantic, taste bud stimulating evening.
PS - get the front area by the window; it's like lounging in a decadent opium bed.
