AMAZING!! The best Indian food in NYC. Period.

I've been coming to Gandhi since i was a kid. It's never been off in the nearly 17 years I've been going there. Romantic, a bargain, great food, well located, great service, and an all around good time. Just go. And bring friends.
Pros: The food is five star quality and it's inexpensive
Cons: None.

My Favorite on the Block
by delala
Good food and good portions. Every dish I have tried is well seasoned, which is in contrast to some of the competition. A favorite of mine are the Bombay Potatoes with raita. Enjoy.

An uninspired meal. Walk on by.
by venya
I've walked by Gandhi several dozen times and finally tried it over the weekend. In short, keep walking.
The 3 appetizers were ordered we bland. The meat samosas were slightly bigger than a Mentos, and left me even hungrier. The chicken soup arrived at my table as a coconut soup. When the chicken soup finally arrived, it was without doubt the saltiest soup I've ever had. You might roll your eyes at use of a superlative, but I am Not a picky eater... it was inedible.
The Chicken Tikka Masala was bland, uninspired and just not good.
On the plus side, the decor was nice enough, Indian music playing softly in the background. The waiters were diligent about refilling water...
East 6th street is lined with Indian restaurants. Keep walking and find yourself a good one.
Pros: decor, can accomodate large groups
Cons: food, food, food

Typical Run-Of-The-Mill Indian Restaurant
by Burlington Tom
I chose to go to Gandhi last night after reading reviews for several Curry Row restaurants. Hardly anyone else was there, after all, it was a Monday. The decor of the dining room certainly reflects Indian culture, although I would have liked some background music, since it was pretty quiet. I was a little disappointed that we did not get any naan bread once we sat down, as it seems to be usual at other places. After we ordered our meals, they asked if we wanted any, which was brought out with our meals. I ordered the Lamb Briyani, recommended in another review and my fiance ordered Chicken Tikka. Our meals were fantastic. I must recommend the dish as well. The service was relatively attentive, although once we got our meals and the naan bread, there was some confusion when we asked for the three dips that typically go along with the bread. The servers did not understand us, until we pointed to another person's table, where they had the said dips. The waiter probably refilled our waters after every three sips. Altogether, though, I give this restaurant an average rating. Average because the food and price were great, the service and atmosphere were decent, but it's not one of the BEST Indian places I've ever gone to. The enthusiastic manager wished us a good night on the way out, which I thought was nice.
Pros: Food, Value
Cons: Just an average place to go

Not-so-hidden treasure
by dinardnj
While nearly all of the 6th Street Indian restaurants are located on the south side of the street, Gandhi stands out on the north side with its giant green awning, completely unobstructed by any other competing restaurants next door. The food is above par and I appreciated the little nuances that made Gandhi seem different to me than its run-of-the-mill competitors across the street. Gandhi offers a variety of interesting yogurt drinks, beers, and appetizers, and the interior of the restaurant is alluring, yet cozy, with scarlet and gold walls, lit only by candles and small accent lamps, decorated in beautiful, beaded shades.

Its a very nice restaurant, I had very good shrimp vindaloo and the garlic nan was excellent. The beers are uncommon in New York, very authentic Haywards from India which I like very much. Good place for date, my wife liked the lamb biryani. Will visit again when innm the village. Good job yar.
Pros: cheap, quality, taste
Cons: busy, loud

Great place!!!
by padma70
We've been visiting this restaurant for almost six years and have been very happy with the great food and value. I really love the tandoori, especially the garlic nan. The food is fresh and spicy and quality is so good even for takeout. The sag panir and malai kofta are my favorites, my boyfriend likes the spicy lamb. I've tried most of the menu and its all very good: however, skip the south indian dishes -- they weren't good. The service is sometimes abrupt but its getting better. Its nice that they have the bar again but I think they need a bartender.
If you are on the street, you have to try this place -- its the best!
Pros: food, price, atmosphere
Cons: busy, service

in a hurry?
by bukimoo
then don't eat here. However, if you have a leisurely evening ahead of you, this is the place to go. They certainly don't rush you.
The food tasted bland (meaning not spicy at all), and the service, while earnest, was on the slow side.
I loved the decor and the background music. I would head back if I had sufficient time for this dining experience. We even had coconut-rice pudding on the house! Good for a romantic or a friendly meal.
PS - Skip the coconut soup. Too greasy. And the vegetable biryani was not that exciting. However, the chick pea dish...mmmm.
Pros: good value, loved the decor, friendly waiters
Cons: , not spicy enough

Great food

If you are looking for the best vegetarian meal go to Gandhi. We took a group of 18 people straight from the Ashram to Gandhi and had a fabulous dinner. They even accomodated the trully "vegan" members of our party without sacrifising any of the taste. The hand painted walls make for a pleasant setting and the service was professional. O'M SHANTI
Pros: Vegetarian, Inexpensive, Atmosphere

GO FOR IT NOW
by goforitnow
We had a wonderful dinner for four at this busy but inexpensive restaurant on Curry Row. The vegetarian dishes were especially good. My girlfriend had the tandoori mixed grill and thought it was one of the freshest and tastiest ones she has had. The breads were really good. The service was good too, prompt and courteous -- unlike most of the restaurants on the street. And they don'thave any christmas light decorations here. GO FOR IT NOW
Pros: Inexpensive, Excellent Service, Varied Menu

Having moved to NY from London I have been craving good Indian food... I finally found it! The vindaloos were as good as the ones served in London and the prices were even better. The family owned place has a staff that is friendly and service was terrific. They even made up a dish for us that wasn't on their menu. Its the best on the Street!
Pros: inexpensive, romantic
Cons: crowded

12 for dinner!
by crackers58
12 (yes 12) of us had dinner here last night. I live in the neighborhood and recommended Gandhi as a good Indian restaurant. No one was disappointed. The waiters were very patient (what with 12 women changing their minds while ordering!), and attentive to us; clearing plates, refilling water glasses... The food and drinks came promptly. The portions were large enough for us to share. Most surprising to my friends was the bill; around $17 per person. That included drinks, appetizers, entrees, coffee, tea and desserts. All were delighted that they now have a "new" Indian place to go to.
