BEWARE!! I received a $200 gift card just over a year ago. Knowing that gift cards do not expire in NY for 5 years, I was in no hurry to use it. Unfortunately when I did try to use it today, I was told by someone claiming to be the "manager" (although she outright refused to provide her name when I asked her) that the company had changed hands and they were under no legal obligation to honor my gift card. She knows this, she says, because she is a lawyer (a fact she mentioned no less than 4 times during our conversation). Although the business name, phone number, web address and physical address stayed the same (not to mention the "owner" had access to records from the previous owners since she found when the card was purchased) she stated that they would not be honoring my card but I could take a "gift" of a 1 hour class in lieu of my $200 card. When I said that was not acceptable, the "owner" hung up on me. Again, BEWARE. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE IS DISGUSTING and if you do run into a problem, you will be met with uncooperative staff who refers to you as "honey" and makes no legitimate attempt to stand behind their name.

Tavi is great. She is so enthusiastic. What a change from the previous owners. The store looks amazing. She has great yarn that no one else has. I cannot believe how many yarn companies has relationships already. And it so great that she is having so many trunk shows, book signings with amazing designers, and classes. And her daughter is so knowledgeable and a pleasure to have around. She knows more about yarn knitting, crocheting, spinning, quilting, etc. I am already taking a spinning class an expert spinning--wheel, spindle, fleece and techniques. It is sad that one of the previous reviewers was so nasty and wrong. And because I do not have a wheel, Tavi is letting me come in at any time to practice. I cannot say enough.

I recommend for anyone who ever wanted to knit, sew or do needle point to come to Yarn Company. The store is filled with beautiful yarn and great ideas on what you can create next. If you never done it before , there is wonderful staff that can help you with any project. If you are all ready advanced in knitting, Yarn Company has classes that can take you to another level. THe selection of yarn makes you want to buy everything and try different ideas and makes you feel wonderful.

I would like to start by saying I don't generally write reviews unless I feel compelled either by a love for or a loathe for a certain product or place. In this case I would like to write this in hopes that my LYS does not turn into one such place that I loathe. Don't get me wrong, the store itself is beautifully kept and arranged and the yarn selection alone was enough to keep me coming back. As of late the only thing keeping me coming through the door is the staff. They are so knowledgeable, helpful and patient and are always willing to go the extra mile to help whether I am stuck on a stitch or just lost on which yarn to use. They have come to my rescue on more than one occasion and I'm not the only one...

Now, the not so great part...If it were just the staff and the yarn the store would be perfect and I could boast to all my fellow yarnies how I have the best LYS in town and I would actually invite more business into the store. However, the one thing keeping me back is the uncomfortably tense energy the owner brings into the store when she is present. Aside from not being very knowledgeable or helpful, she is also not the most personable of shop keepers (to put it nicely) and like I said she really ruins the aura of the otherwise beautiful store. This brings me to the owners daughter who is, more often than not, in the store. I like children just as much as the next person but I generally like to knit and go to my LYS to relax and get tips or share knowledge with other yarnies. I actually avoid being "helped" by her and sometimes avoid the place altogether when she is there. The owner lets her "help" people and ring people up on the register and 7 times out of 10 she will make mistakes and have to call one of the regular staff over to fix it. I have seen her ruin yarn on the winder more than once and it holds people up, including myself. Furthermore, for a young child she seems to have an air about her. She tends to talk down to people and has offended more than one. I can only assume this is learned behavior so I can not fault her that but I can fault the fact that she is in the store and allowed to interact with customers. It's enough to deal with a rude owner but to combine that with her similar daughter is too much. In my opinion, a child should be out having fun being a child anyway and not working in a store and it's definitely against most labor laws in the country. Alas, I will unfortunately and promptly have to start taking my business elsewhere if things do not change and I have spoken to many other people who feel the same...

With my mother turning eighty this year, I knew I wanted just the right mother's day gift. this years' gift was going to be very special. A friend of mine suggested I buy some special yarns and create a gift basket. She recommended the Yarn Company.
My first impression was of all the gorgeous colors and textures of yarn organized on gleaming metal racks. I felt like a kid in a candy shop. The white walls, (one wall of exposed brick) and the decadant choices of wools gave me the sense I had walked into a boutique; what an immaculate space! The second floor space overlooking Broadway seemed simultaneously cloistered, yet every bit a part of the cityI knew this shopping experience would be as wonderful for me in selecting my gift as it would be for my mother recieving it. The owner was there and understanding my enthusiasm for this special purchase I was making, helped me with care. I am not a knitter, but I was drawn to the yarns that attracted me. The owner helped me make the right selections, steering me away from certain yarns that might not have worked well together, understandng that my mother's hands might be more comfortable workng different weights than the ones I was collecting, even though they were more expensive.
I will always remember this shopping experience, it was so fitting for buying this special mother's day present.

I have been a customer at the yarn co for several years and have always found it to be a wonderful store with helpful staff and a fantastic selection of yarns. The staff always helps me find appropriate yarn if I come with a pattern in mind, and if not - they have oodles of sample garments hanging that are always an inspiration. I have made many projects with their yarn and patterns that have been written for me by them - and they have all been successful! And whenever I have hit a glitch - I just come in, sit down and they help me figure out what is wrong or how to do a new stitch. Granted, there are often people sitting around the table chatting and knitting and it may feel a bit cliquey when you walk in - but all you have to do to join the clique is sit down and all of the sudden you are part of any conversation that is going on and people are commenting on how great whatever you are knitting is. It is a fun, welcoming store with staff that really knows their stuff.
On the flip side - I see many of the poor reviews for the store suggest going to Knitty City instead. Do not! When I have been in - I have been offered no help, not even a "hello" and the store is a mess with an odd selection of yarns. Plus none of the staff is able to write a pattern (I went there on a Sunday a few times when the Yarn Co was closed - but I'll wait til they are open from now on!)

Not only is the staff unfriendly, they are SNOBS! Ask if there are cheaper alternatives to certain yarns, they treat you like you're beneath them. Also, I have several times (along with another friend of mine) been given bad advice on different yarn options to a specific pattern I'm following. They want to sell the yarns they carry and they don't care if your piece comes out looking terrible by telling you to buy one of the yarns they have to substitute for the one called for by the pattern.

Also, BEWARE of buying Addi Turbo needles from them. They keep them under the counter so you can't pick them out yourself. They have TWICE given me the wrong size (possibly even on purpose) and then claim that needles are "non-returnable".

It is such a shame that the service and staff is so bad here because they do carry some nice, high quality yarns. But with so many options in the city, why spend your yarn money with people who obviously don't care about your business or the piece you're lovingly knitting especially when there's another good yarn store just a few blocks away?

Who needs attitude when buying yarn? Famous among locals for being consistently rude and overpriced, it's places like this that give NY a bad name. Went in a total novice and walked out with overpriced supplies that I didn't need after the owner abruptly walked away without so much as a perfunctory "thank you." Stock may be good quality but there's very little to choose from and none of it is reasonably priced. Knitty City is friendlier, cheaper, has a much larger selection and is only 3 blocks away. And the reviews that say it's the best store in the history of the world were all posted the same week. Do I detect a little spin control, Yarn Co?

Who needs attitude when buying yarn? Famous among locals for being consistently rude and overpriced, it's places like this that give NY a bad name. Pros: none

Cons: unfriendly, unhelpful, overpriced

I have gone to this shop for the past 6 - 7 years when I vacation in NYC. The staff has varied from dismissive to unfriendly to downright rude. I agree with the reviewer who said you are treated well if you are dressed in fashion and with the other reviewer who said it is not worth the trip up the stairs. Are New Yorkers really willing to accept bad treatment for spending a lot of money? There are plenty of helpful and friendly places with very nice selections in the city. I have spent my share in this shop as they do have some lovely yarns, but they will be getting no more of my money. The Yarn Co. will not be on my list of attractions this November.

I visit New York every fall and like to visit various yarn shops. I have been knitting for over 50 years and have never been treated as offhandedly as I have been in the Yarn Co. I agree that it is not worth the trip up the stairs. I will avoid this unfriendly and full-of-itself place from now on.

The ladies at Yarn&Company have always been patient, supportive, and creative. They are always willing to work out my knitting mistakes, but other yarn stores mistakes too! Having picked up knitting 8 years ago, I have had several experiences at other stores in the city. These ladies not only know how to create patterns that work and are beautiful, but are always eager to help out when I have problems or questions. They take the time to work out the issues, but also teach me something at the same time. My progress and abilities have not only improved, but I give them credit for being part of that success. Try other stores, but I am confident you will end up back at Yarn&Co to finish or start a new project.

I've been in NYC for work for about 5 months. I haven't had a lot of time to visit yarn stores. I wandered into Yarn Co a month or so ago & was taken aback. The greeting was warm, inclusive, from the staff. The selection of both colors & fibers was extensive. They offered to help me work out a pattern for a yarn I fell in love with, which was on sale (hooray!). This store is relatively large & airy (for NYC) with lots of light. There is usually a congregation of knitters around the table chatting, knitting, helping each other. I found it welcoming, well supplied. This is definitely at the top of my list for NYC because it combines a great selection with a welcoming environment that encourages creativity & exploration. If you are too shy to speak up & ask for help you might find the environment a bit intimidating. For the shy ones, gather your courage & catch the eye of one of the staff. You will quickly find these are friends you hadn't realized you had. There isn't a huge selection of inexpensive yarns here. This means keeping stash expansion urges under control so you don't use your rent money. I happily commute up to the store as much as my schedule allows. Great energy !

Pros: Friendly, cheerful, knowledgeable staff, large selection of colors & fibers. Great environment.

Cons: VERY steep steps, be careful to keep your balance! Not a lot of inexpensive fiber choices

I agree with Tara and others. This yarn store is great. The have fantastic yarns. Yes, they can be expensive but sometimes you have to pay for quality. I find the staff to be very helpful and they will write patterns for you rather than directing you to a book to find the pattern. And they know their books to so they may help you find the pattern in a book too. Sometimes it can be crowded but maybe that is a sign there is something worth the wait.

The Yarn Company is by far the best yarn store I have ever been to. There is a reason why the store is always so crowded. "Getting help" at The Yarn Company is totally different than any other knitting store I have been to. When I am at other stores, Ill say "I want to make a baby sweater" and they will often direct me to a bookshelf of knitting books and I am told to find a pattern I like and I am left to sift through 100s of books. I usually walk out at that point because it is too overwhelming. At Yarn Co, when I ask this same question, someone walks me through the store and shows me all the beautiful samples and options I have. When I see something I like (and usually its very hard to pick just one), they then help me pick out a nice yarn to use, and then write out a pattern for me. All of this takes time, but its well worth it. Their yarn selection is beautiful and they have tons of great projects that are very easy to knit. I highly recommend Yarn Co to all knittiers, beginners and experts - its really in a class of its own.

Pros: amazing selection, great ideas, customized patterns

Cons: small space (but that's NYC)

The Yarn Company is by far the best yarn store I have ever been to. I am really surprised by some of the negative reviews because I have had nothing but postiive experiences. Sure, there are times that it is crowded and you might have to wait a few minutes to get help, but the personalized service you get is well worth the wait. I don't know which store people are visiting that describe The Yarnco in such disparaging terms. I've been a customer for many years and I have always found the Yarn Girls and their staff to be helpful, creative, patient and resourceful and above all friendly. The yarn selection is the BEST in the city and everyone that works there is interested in your finding the project that YOU want to do. They're really up to snuff on their knitting knowledge. You get the feeling that everyone who works in the store genuinely loves the craft of knitting and wants to share that with all the customers. There's lots of pattern books, original store patterns (free with the purchase of yarn) and I was just there the other day and The Yarn Girls are now stocking lots of sock yarns for the fall. Check it out.

Pros: Great Variety of yarns, lots of yarns you don't find in other stores, permanent sale room yarns

Cons: Yes the stairs are steep - but good for your shapely legs!

This is a great shop. I have been going there for years and I am so sorry to read the other reviews. Unfortunately, the only customers that post reviews seem to be unhappy ones. If you just go to the store, you will see many, many people sitting at a table working on their projects. They are getting help from all of the staff that are trying to pay attention to all of the customers at once. You will also find amazing yarns that can be used to make anything you want. The shop is filled with samples of sweaters, belts, bags, blankets, dresses, hats, coats and more, all that were made by the staff. All of them provide the shopper with tons of ideas on what to make and the patterns are all written by Yarn Co. staff. They will adjust anything to fit you or the yarn that you want to use. Also, they do finishing for those knitters that don't want to do it themselves. You may have to wait for someone to help you... this shop is crowded at times and it is small. If you can't wait, get a personal shopper to go for you. Who goes to a specialty store and does not expect to wait? Go to the Yarn Co. and see for yourself what a great knitting experience you will have!

I have been to many yarn shops in the city and this is the BEST. I will tell you that unlike other shops, this one is packed! There is a reason for that. Also, no other shops have samples that were hand knit by the owners and the staff ALL over the shop. You never have to go to a knitting book for a pattern unless you want to.They write all of their own patterns and it comes for free with the purchase of the yarn. These girls know how to knit! Any question you have they can answer it. They have fixed mistakes that were beyond repair for me! I go to the store not knowing what I want to make next and they help me put yarns together and tell me HONESTLY what looks good and what does not. I respect their opinions and do not think this makes them rude. The work they do looks like it comes from a boutique department store and they want their customers to have the same outcome. I have referred many people to the shop and they all love it! Go see for yourself what the shop is all about. Yes, you may have to wait for someone to help you. Remember, one day you may be the person they are helping, keeping them from another customer. Patience is a virtue, my fellow knitters.
