DO NOT EAT THE FAVA BEAN SOUP! The beans were old and the cheese was sour I got food poisioning 5 mins after I ate it. I was throwing up all night sick to my stomach. Besides this when I walked in and requested a table they told me it was taken, well i was in the restaurant until closing and nobody ever sat at the table. Also it was a satarday night and the place was empty. The waiter was cold and had no emotion. I am an italian cook and this food was NOT italian. If you want italain food then go to arthur ave in the bronx, but definitely not little italy which is a huge tourism trap. I grew up in new york cit y and would luv to see this place shut down.

I was recently in little Italy and decided to stop into Il Cortile with family members of mine. The minute I walked in we were greeted and seated promptly. We were brought a beverage menu and decided to go with a nice bottle of Pino Grigio Wine. As I am from an Italian family from Italy there is a higher quality expectation for good food.
Il Cortile Deliveres when it comes to food and service. I had the most amazing fresh lobster ravioli. The lobster was freshly stuffed into the pasta. I also had the mosting amazing fresh clams. When it comes to service and good you can not go wrong. There has to be something wrong with anyone who has not had a good experience at Il Cortile.
Either a person doesn't know what good food is or doesn't know that quality does cost money. As the old addage goes You get what you pay for and that is exceptional food and service.

We had been to Il Cortile for a nice family dinner. The restaurant looked okay from the outside so we went in. First of all, the people helping, serving there are horrible. They dis give us a menu for beverages. We asked for a bottle of wine and was served some thing else. We did not The food was horrible, inedible, not cooked, no taste.. NOTHING.
the food is extremely expensive, and such a waste. We returned hungry and $200 less.

I would not recommend this to my enemy.

OK, anyone thinking about restaurants on Mulberry St has to know that they generally are geared towards tourists. In my opinion that is why the service is often sketchy - the restaurants know that you are probably not a repeat customer since you are probably a tourist so why go the extra length and cost to dazzle you? Besides, you know to have your guard up when the restaurant has to post someone out front on the street to hustle in customers.

I was in SoHo looking for a good Thai restaurant (and lamenting the closing of Kin Khao on Spring) when my friend's husband decided to inform us that his conservative palate would not allow him to eat Thai that particular evening (I think he lost the desire to be "experimental") . He knew we were close to Little Italy and convinced the rest of the group to head there for dinner.

Walking up north on Mulberry you see Il Cortile on the left - it has an attractive facade, especially when compared to many of the other restaurants. The restaurant had the obligatory customer-hustler out front but he had a twist - he offered free dessert and coffee if we ate dinner there. Casa Bella next door was packed while Il Cortile had ample open tables but my friend was convinced that we couldn't go wrong with free dessert and coffee.

Our waiter was very good, the high point of the evening. He took care of us, and me being the cynical one, thought that our order of 2 bottles of Chianti had something to do with it since that bumped up the bill quite a bit. I should be more open-minded though, he was very attentive, It's just that my last experience in Little Italy found an inverse relationship between the amount of alcohol you order (to increase the tab) to the amount of attention you receive from the wait staff.

All the attentiveness of our waiter couldn't hide the average food that we were served. Appetizers were tiny - each was barely enough for one person let alone to be shared with another. I guess the mistake was to try something other than the obligatory fried calamari (which looked to be of decent portions from what I was at other tables). My chicken with artichokes tasted fine, though there was nothing else served with it, not even a small side of pasta. All I was served was a plate of chicken. One other in my party ordered a chicken dish as well, theirs too was just chicken, no sides. I really need to remember this the next time I dine in the area. The other 2 had pasta dishes - they were on the average to slightly small size-wise, no complaints really except that the Alfredo sauce came out a bit thick, perhaps due to the fact that we were eating later in the evening - it might have been sitting around for a bit if it was made early in the day.

Dessert - our free slice of cake (no options) was OK, nothing special, but our cappuccinos, also free, were very nice. That nice ending did wonders to alleviate the ho-humness that was characteristic of the meal up to that point (as did the bottles of wine).

Il Cortile is an OK place, perfectly presentable, nothing spectacular or out-of-the-ordinary, a solid Little Italy restaurant that just happens to have very capable wait staff. You really can't go wrong here.

I went in April and just feel compelled to write a review of the experience. We had been there before a few times for celebrations and such so decided to go for my birthday. I never really thought the food was spectacular, but this time it was literally inedible. to begin, I ordered the eggplant rollatini as an appetizer which my friend and me split. I should have grabbed him and left as soon as I tasted it. the sauce tasted funny, too bitter and greasy and the cheese was nothing short of spoiled while the eggplant itself was stringy and full of seeds. there was nothing delicate about it at all. part of the beauty of good Italian food is the way its handled and prepared, the way the ingredients meld and merge and marry. nothing in this dish was right. my stomach immediately turned. to boot- it arrived about half an hour after we were seated. again, should have just left. but no. troopers, we decided to stick it out and wait even longer for the entree. if the appetizer was bad the entree was heinous. it was supposed to be swordfish, but it looked like a gray mass in the middle of the plate. the grill marks were not real, they were like painted on with food coloring, it just came that way from the frozen fish people. it was almost tasteless except for a slight putrid lemon fish broth taste and because of the very bad fish smell, the color, and taste I simply refused to eat it knowing I would be sick from it. we tried to eat the greens that come with it (unidentifiable) but they too were sour spoiled and inedible. we told the waiter the food is inedible and as a consolation prize he offered cappuccino and dessert on the house. the dessert was the lamest thing I've ever seen-bad raspberries in "custard" but the custard looked so gross. we just walked out after paying the bill , my friend trying to make me feel better but I was so insulted it just ruined the evening. it was the most insulting dining experience I've ever had. the slowest service for the worst most disgusting food.

Pros: the ghost of lost grandeur

Cons: what they consider to be edible

THE CHECK WAS RIDICULOUS. Our server tacked on 20% for himself because we had a party of 8. I'm used to 15% or 18%, but not 20%. It didn't say that anywhere on the website or the menu. On top of everything, the service was TERRIBLE. I will never come back here.
It's a horrible feeling to be on pins and needles with out of town guests, knowing that everyone is starving and restless because your server never comes to check on you.
I get it, there will always be customers in Little Italy. The service doesn't have to be great-but it should be.
I know Italian food. And this is good Italian food, BUT not worth the horrible service and cost.
I chose this restaurant because of wonderful over-the-top ambiance for out of town guests from MI. There were 8 of us and I heard Il Cortile is great for groups.
We waited 20 minutes over an empty bottle of wine before anyone took our order. We ordered appetizers and entrees at the same time because we were all starving.
The apps took about 20 minutes and the portions were small. The mini calzones were good and the antipasti was nothing special. The entrees came about 20 minutes later. Again, small portions but pretty good food.
We waited another 20 minutes after we were finished eating to hear about dessert but it looked tired and lame so we headed to Ferrara instead.
This place is not worth it.

In a galaxy far away, a long, long time ago, you made reservations at IL Cortile and often you would drop someone??s name and then maybe, maybe you would get a table. Boy has times changed! The other day I was in little Italy, now a ghost town, I walked into IL Cortile and was seated immediately. The huge restaurant was so empty that some preschoolers were playing tag in a closed section that was bigger than most other restaurants.
Il Cortile is over the top, there is a man sized floral display and some of the brick s have been imported from Italy The menu was presented as a folded parchment, cute, but confusing. However, the waiter was truly professional. I ordered the Scaloppine "Panettone", veal and mushrooms baked in bread. Very quickly the waiter came back and said. The panettone was not at its best and suggested something else.
The Antipasto Caldo "Cortile", hot antipasti was small and some of the items burnt. not a good start. The Spaghettini Puttanesca Speciali, the pasta, was only luke warm, but the pasta was al dente and the ingredients very fresh. It could have used a little more spice.
The Mussels Marinara was very good, the sauce restaurant made and just so. My Veal dish had lots of Puccini mushrooms and the veal melted in my mouth.
An old trick to determine the quality of the restaurant is to ask for a glass of the house wine, a good restaurant will not give you a bad wine. I did and got a Chianti Reserva that east very smooth and a beautiful bouquet.
Dessert was Espresso and a chocolate moose cake with crushed nuts that was worth the wait.
IL Cortile still has it and I guess the emptiness can be blamed more on the economy than the restaurant.

I only gave it 1 star because I had to. There was nothing good about this place. The gravy(sauce for you non-NYC people) was garbage and actually tasted like there was curry in it. I would rather eat gravy frrom the jar! The service sucked and the prices were typical NYC tourist trap over-priced swill. First it took forever to get seated then the waiter had an attitude, so I tried to loosen him up by joking around and he got nasty. So I had a little talk with him and that was straightened out for the rest of our time there(and before your brain goes off the deep end I didnt get nasty or make any threats what so ever) was made slightly better. Hey everybody has bad days! But nothing could make up for the poor-low quality food. Dont go there, their are plenty of better restaurants in NYC where you wont break the bank and get a great meal.

Pros: LOL

Cons: Everything once you get through the front door

It used to be out-standing. It is so disappointing! The lack of nice ambiance, the attitude from over-worked waiters, and FOOD!!! I ordered aldente, but what I had was like, school lunch over-cooked PASTA. I would not go back there and it is expensive too. I would rather go some place else.

My wife and I went there 1/18/08. We had a great experience. We shared an antipasta, a salad and an Entree. There was no problem with us splitting our meal. As a matter of fact, the server split the salad for us. The service was excellent and the food was great also.

This place came highly recommended by our flight attendant who lives in the Village. She was right on with her recommendation.

Worst restaurant experience I have ever had!
(This is my first time writing a review, but I went there BASED on the good rating it has on CitySearch so I felt compelled to warn others away!!)

I made a reservation for myself and 8 friends and family, for their first night visiting me from the London. They did not seat us for over 1 hour, and were extremly rude and obnoxious to us when we inquired, at various times throughout that hour, about our reservation and when we would be seated. Over an hour of '10 more minutes'- and then they argued with my brother-in-law, when he calmly expressed his disappointment! The manager was honestly the rudest , most dosrespectful man I have met for a long time. Food was completely average.
There are so many great restaurants, and fabulous service in NYC restaurants, do yourself a favor and DON'T GO TO IL CORTILE!!!

I have been meaning to write this review since I dined at Il Cortile in May 2007. I made arrangements for a large group, and when we arrived we were escorted to the lovely Renaissance Room. Our servers were gracious and kind, constantly making sure everything we needed was taken care of.
If you go to this restaurant, make sure you take your time. Food like this should be savored and enjoyed, rush free. The only mistake we made was to schedule dinner too close to the time our Broadway play started. You could easily take three hours having a wonderful dinner, topping it off with a lucious dessert and cappucino or espresso.
Whenever I return to New York, I will be sure to make reservations at this wonderful restaurant.

I've never felt compelled to write a review before, but I rely on this site for restaurant recommendations, so I want to save other diners from a miserable experience at Il Cortile. I had friends in from out of town who wanted to eat in Little Italy, so I chose Il Cortile after reading other reviews... what a mistake. The service was terrible, the waiter was just plain rude. I'm all for a little personality, but he just made everyone uncomfortable with his terrible attitude. It took over an hour to get our food. We waited 45 minutes to get a table outside (even though we had a reservation) so we could enjoy watching the crowd walk by on a Sunday night and they put an umbrella up right in front of our table to block our view... not sure why. I could excuse all of this if the food was good, but it was mediocre at best. With all the other restaurants on Mulberry, make this a last resort.

Cons: Terrible service, mediocre food

My once-fave Little Italy restaurant closed down years ago...I can now say I have a new favorite there! We dined here because we've been researching restaurants with private rooms for an event we're planning. This large restaurant has lots of cool areas...many various rooms offering a different experience (we liked sitting by the windows & people watching). The food was amazing - great salad & dressing & for entrees we had pasta w/ marinara & prosciutto & a unique chicken dish w/ peaches, grapes, string beans & onions - not only was everything absolutely joyous for the tastebuds but well presented & pleasing to the eye. The nightly specials sounded excellent. I did notice no wine list, the waiters pretty much name what they have when you ask. & they can't do certain mixed drinks apparently...I ordered an Irish Coffee w/ dessert & they couldn't do it, so I had a glass of port instead. Italian cheesecake was good but we ended up being more intrigued by the berries-in-cream (that's what it looked like) desserts that we didn't get. Service was friendly - our waiter was outgoing (& sure to give any tourists a "New York-y" waiter experience) & the staff was prompt with refills, cheese & pepper, & whatever else we needed. Probably not going to have our event here... it's more of a "group dinner" place than a "party in a private room" place for us (seems like you need a certain # of people to get the private rooms; otherwise, you're just getting a somewhat-separate area w/ a long table). But we will certainly return. To top it all off, I forgot my credit card here & didn't realize it for a few days... They had it safely locked up & were really cordial when I returned for it.

Pros: Excellent food, ambience & service

Cons: Certain areas crowded, a bit pricy

The ambience is quite nice at Il Cortile, but it gets crowded and the wait can be long. Overall the food is really good and worth it once in a while.

I mainly go to restaurants for the food. Nice atmosphere, etc. is ... well, nice, but being a real "foodie", I'll travel far and wide for a savory meal. I have been to Il Cortile about 4 times now, and always marvel at the quality of the dishes. Their breaded veal cutlet with proscuitto, some type of cheese and broccoli rabe is to die for. The veal cutlet is never tough (like at other places), and melts in your mouth. Their veal chop with artichokes and pistachios, and their pasta dish with meatballs, sausage and pork are both incredible. While the food is terrific, you must overlook the often apathetic service, and the sometimes downright rude Manager that seats people.

Some of the best italian food in the entire city! Reasonably priced considering the beautiful, romantic atmosphere.

Frist of all, mad dudes who stress out on restaurants in general are usually extremely finicky (read: cheap). I am a true foodie, and this place was just ridiculously good. Big-ups for the fresh bread, the amazing antipasto, and the simple, yet delicious pasta dishes. All you haters complain all you want, but just man-up and pay over $20 for a meal once in your pathetic existence. There is more to life than wack food, treat yourself and then go get a canoli across the street. Your welcome!

The below reviewers are RIGHT. I came here last year with my aunt and cousin and the food was absolutely mouth watering. I get belly hunger pangs just thinking about the Salmon Fettucine dish I ordered...yum. This is probably the best FILLING "mouth watering" Italian food I've had in NYC, and I've lived in NY my whole life.
On a down side, the service was really mediocre. Our waiter was waiting on one other table in the empty restaurant but he didn't seem too interested in our needs. We had to flag down a busboy twice.

i love this place -- hands-down, my favorite italian restaurant in little italy. i've been there more than a dozen times and it's really consistently good food. only once have i been disappointed (busy fri nite and the place was packed), but even then, the food was good. servers are really great, and there's not too much turnover so there's a really fun, family atmosphere. they are more friendly when it's not prime time busy dinner hours so go a little earlier or a little later than when everyone else wants to eat. ambience is great, but sometimes a bit loud. just ask to be seated away from the groups and you'll be fine; the place is spacious enough to handle the groups and intimate couples. ENJOY.

I ate here during the San Ginero. While the place clearly jacked up the prices, it's nice place to sit and watch the crowd walk by.

The mussels were good, but not really that hot but the main courses where very tastey. I had the chicken Nepoleano and the sauce was nice and buttery. Service was decent considering the amount of people the waiter was serving.

The only down side is that it took forever to get our food.

Dinner for 2, apt, and a bottle will be around 100 bucks.

On a side note, this place had very nice bathrooms!

Go on Sunday, you have to try their "Sunday Sauce" with meatballs, braciole and sausage. Delicious. Also, no to be missed are the fried artichokes. I was there during a Sunday lunch with friends and will most definetly go back.

I dont understand, after reading all of the reviews, how anyone could say anything bad about this restaurant. I am a native New Yorker who enjoys dining out and I have been many places in the city, THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST! I think it would be hard to find any better italian food in New York. Of course if you go there on saturday night at 8:30 it will be busy and noisy, but the food is ABSOLUTELY worth any wait or noise. If you haven't been to Il Cortile, please dont pass up the opportunity, you will regret not having a chance to experience this great restaurant.

Has quickly become my favorite restaurant in NYC. Food is always terrific. Service and seating may at times be slow, but just relax and enjoy the ambience. Favorite dish is the lobster ravioli. Can't go wrong with any pasta dish. I Recommend this restaurant to all my out of town friends. Don't mean to pick on reviewers (yes I do), but the pizza bread is meant to be cold and to complain that the salmon and linguine is "too fishy" is moronic. Also, both my parents were born in Rome and I go once a year and believe me the food is comparable. Do not recommend for anyone not of drinking age.

Ordered the seafood salad, having been told of the shrimp and scallops. My dish had 2 (maybe 3) small shrimps and 2 small scallops - the rest was mainly octopus and squid. Had I been informed when I asked, I would not have ordered the seafood salad. The salmon and linguini was also a disappointment - very fishy tasting. The chicken was acceptable, browned in a wine reduction, but the skin on the chicken was chewy and fatty, not crisp. Overall, disappointing, considering all the restaurants there are in the neighborhood to choose from. Wouldn't return.

had a birthday party there last weekend, i was a little iffy about coming here because of the prices, but most of the reviews seemed positive. we had a party of 12 and afterwards i took a poll and the concensus was that the food was good but too salty, the ambience was good (we sat in the garden room), service was below average, and overall not worth the prices. i ordered a glass of wine and one of the hosts accidentally brought over two glasses, so he set one aside on the dessert table. when i ordered another glass later on, he brought me that same glass that was sitting there for over half an hour. very unprofessional.

I have worked in the restaurant industry for 5 years, and so am understanding of things out of my server's control, and I have never experienced such poor service! My boyfriend took me to dinner for an early Valentine's Day, we showed up early for our reservation to meet an incredibly rude host who told us the bar was full, to just wait behind a rope. Please, this isn't a club! From there it just went downhill. My boyfriend tipped the busboy rather than the server because he was the only one who was helpful. There are so many better Italian restaurants with better food and better service in new york city that I would NEVER recommend this one.

Absolutley one of the top 3 restaurant experiences of my life. We visited during the St. ?? festival, the strret was packed with booths, incredible atmosphere. We ate inside in the back room which looks like an lod church, beautiful stained glass ceiling. Servcie was impeccible, the room was beautiful and romantic. The food was simply wonderful. Tasty, perfectly seasoned, flavors were beautifully complimentary, nothing was cloying or overbearing and everything was fresh, fresh, fresh! I'ts 4 months later and my mouth is watering and my stomach begging as I think about it. I can't imagine going to New York and not visiting the Metropoitan or Il Cortille.

I went to Il Cortile with a group of five people, and EVERYONE at the table was stunned beyond words by the food. Everything was SO flavorful and unique, it was absolutely to die for. It would be a sin to vacation in the City and not have dinner at Il Cortile. The service left something to be desired, but the food definitely made up for it. The veal is spectacular. My only complaint is that they don't offer dessert cannoli!

We went to Il Cortile for our Anniversary dinner. It was on a Monday night - so the restaurant was not packed.

We were greeted at the door, and promptly seated. The waiter(s) were very attentive - but not overbearing.

The food ---- ooooooooooo, the food was great. Had I not been with my husband, I would have married the chef!

It seems like it's hit or miss - since the reviews on this page are so polar opposite.

My review (and I think I'm a good judge) is that Il Cortile was wonderful, and I would highly recommend it.

Il Cortile is GREAT. Don't go at a busy time, because with a full house, I'm sure the staff just can't keep up. However, we went early -- sixish -- on a recent Saturday, got a very nice window table outlooking on Mulberry St., a very sympathetic waiter who recommended a fabulous barolo, brought extra parmasiano when we told him how great it was, brought extra sauce for my date's pasta, and whoa! THAT VEAL SCALLOPINI IN COGNAC SAUCE WAS BEYOND WORDS!!! Dessert was on the house, we were allowed to linger over our wine without any rush whatsoever...just fantastic. By the way, I'm from Chicago, where we have a few great Italian restaurants...but nothing to match the wondrous Il Cortile.

All the people on this site who didn't like this restaurant must have it confused with some other
joint in Little Italy...couldn't possibly have eaten here.

WHEN SEATED COLD PIZZA BREAD WAS BROUGHT TO THE TABLE. THE WAITER REFUSED OUR REQUEST TO HEAT IT. MY WIFES PORK CHOPS WERE SWIMMING IN BALSAMIC VINEGAR. AN ARTICHOKE DISH HAD NO RESEMBLANCE TO ARTICHOKES. THE WAITERS AND STAFF WERE GENERALLY RUDE. STAY AWAY FROM THIS PLACE

Being from Connecticut we don't get down to Mulberrry St. on a regular basis. However, when we do Il Cortile is the only restaurant we eat at. We leave up to the waiter to order our appetizers and we're never disappointed. The menu is a bit pricey but well worth it. After eating at Il Cortile the others are a far 2nd. Try this one, you won't be disappointed. A. Lupinacci

it is interesting to see only one positive on Il Cortile. We dined there while on vacation last December. Although we found the food to be good and the service to be good, I do understand about the "reservation" issues and the wait. We too had reservations but the gentleman never checked a book to see our names or check us off....so i don't even know if they take them. We were seated after about a 20 minute wait, and it was cold where we were! i found the food to be very good though.

There are so many great places in Little Italy, don't waste your time and money here. The food is good, but the waiters only seemed attentive to large groups. What good is pasta w/o parmasean cheese? Also the food is a bit overpriced for the interior - the placemats are open napkins!

On a night hot as the hinges on the back door of Hades, I took my husband and two children to Il Cortile. We waited 30 minutes to be seated, 40 minutes for water, bread, menus, 30 more for wine and soft drinks and when the food finally arrived an hour later, it was inedible, burned on top from sitting under a heat lamp. The chef agreed - he wouldn't eat it either, he said. Instead of comping us for the diner, they removed the cost of two dishes out of four, with the same kind of apology you get when someone accidently knocked you in a crowded elevator. I gonna become a food writer instead of a fiction writer. Call the Health Department.
