I only eat vegan, which can be very tricky to find good restaurants with decent prices to go with my appetite. To this day I have found none better than Mughlai on Columbus ave, where during lunch hours for $9.99 I get a stunning vegan

This was one of my favorite Indian restaurants on the UWS when we lived up there. The food is pretty good, and unlike a lot of Indian restaurants, it's nice to eat in there too. But it's still not nearly as good as some other Indian restaurants in other neighborhoods.

We wanted to splurge a little last night and picked Mughlai based on their ratings and reviews. Delivery for dinner for two with appetizers and a dessert came to $83. Fine if it's great food, but it wasn't.
They took 50 minutes to deliver it which, again, is fine if the food is worth it, but it wasn't. Oh, and they forgot our dessert the first time around.
The Assorted Mughlai Hors D'oeuvres and the Keema Samosas were dry, crusty and flavorless. We ordered cans of soda (listed as an option on Seamless web) and got cups of fountain soda that were flat, warm, and watery. The rice was cold and the Mulligatawny soup was bland.
The Naan and the entrees (Kashmiri Korma, and Lamb Pasanda) were decent.
Unfortunatly, they weren't good enough to justify the cost or make up for the rest of the meal.

The restaurant is exquisitely decorated and the music adds to the great ambiance. The service is speedy and friendly. The place is also very clean. I really enjoyed my food here and would recommend it to anyone who is in the mood for authentic, delicious Indian food. From the name, most Indian people assume that it is a non vegetarian based menu, however there are many vegetarian dishes there to choose from.

I naturally tend to try every restaurant I can before forming an opinion about one vs another however I have dined at Mughlai a few times now and feel that their tikka masala chicken deserves a Citysearch post. It is sweet, spicy, and creamy and probably in the top 2 I have ever had (The top spot still goes to Tamarind in London).. The naans are crisp, light and fluffy.. My wife is veggie and they have pleny of options to keep her happy.. Try any of the kofta's or saag, several varieties of each, they are also pretty amazing. Funky decor with the walls of glass and greenhouse vibe but a fantastic location a block from the natural history museum and park. They are not open during the week for lunch which is a big minus point.. my wife who is expecting our first was forced to eat down the street at another Indian place and was so unhappy with the food and service that she walked out and waited a few hours until Mughlai opened and recieved and prompt early dinner delivery.

Pros: Veggie options, open tandoori oven, friendly staff

Cons: not open for weekday lunch, small bathrooms

Extremely bad service. Rude staff .Very rude reception..it was the worst experience ever. The food is not that great. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Save your money , time , patience and go somewhere else , there are better places around.

A small restaurant on UWS, great food although quite pricy for my taste. It's still worth a go for a date.

The best part of eating here is watching the chef use the tandoori oven. It's like watching IRON CHEF LIVE while eating all of that great food. I was there on a busy Saturday night the place was packed and the guy was non-stop action: cut, skewer, grill, flip, marinade, cut, serve!!! He was doing like 20 naan breads, 20 whole chickens, 20 kebabs, and about 5 whole fishes every ten minutes. The food was great and the guy caught on that we were watching him closely so he sent our group a special bread that he made with nuts, honey and dried fruit. Then he started making goofball gestures through the window Benihana style pointing his skewers at us and kicking up the action - it was a great experience eating Indian food. The service was really good too they never let our glasses run dry and we even got a free round of ice cold mango schnapps shooters at the end of the dinner. I live on the UES but will def. be back at Mughlai more often.

Pros: Get a seat with a view of the tandoor, order grilled meats and fish

Cons: ONLY red meat is Lamb, no beef

There are plenty of great Indian restaurants in New York City and this one certainly isn't. Fortunately it's consistent - the terrible service matches the bland and tasteless food. We walked into the restaurant and everyone in there acted as if they had all been told they were being fired at the end of the shift. I only wish I had taken that as a sign and left, but we didn't. The samosas were spongy and probably the worst I have ever had. The lamb and chicken dishes were without any flavor and no hint of freshness. When the bill arrived and tacked on a dish that we never received it was the final insult to a miserable experience. If you're hungry and you find yourself standing in front of this restaurant, walk the extra block to anywhere else.

How do you define a good customer? Well, one who orders straight of the menu and does not make too much of a fuss ( cant forget a good tip), if this is so; then i must be the worst of customers. i dont order straight of the menu, and fussy about almost everything. At Mughlai i have found that almost all my wims and fancies are accomidated..........though i would not recommend being fussy on a busy night. The servers will go out of there way to see a smile on your face.......and that rice pudding is sure to help there!!! The lamb chops are truly exquisite, but try the Goa fish curry.....and u will be mesmerized, Both dishes are true examples of the master craftsmanship by the chefs at mughlai are. Mughlai the land of lassi and curry!!! Enjoy

The food is pretty decent here, but the servers are so incredibly rude that it just makes you not want to go back. They look at you as if they want you to die for coming into their restaurant. Ordered a chicken saag dish once that had 3 measley chunks of chicken drowning in about 3 cups of spinach sauce.

I am an Indian Food lover and have tried so many places! Mughlai was surprisingly good and flavorful. It is a great place to go out in the neighborhood for Indian food. It is a bit pricey, but it is worth it. They will also make special things that are not on the menu if you request it. Has a good brunch as well (much better than going to a buffet.)

I heard that Mughlai is a Columbus Ave. tradition! I live on Columbus Avenue, but had never been. A group of us went there last week and we all really loved it!! The first thing I noticed is that it has a kind of unique shape. Its like a greenhouse, but they serve Indian food!! The second thing I fell in love with was their tamarind sauce and if you drizzle it over a hot vegetable samo sa you are in for a treat!! They were so good, we kept ordering more of them. We also sampled some dishes from their tandoori oven, primarily lamb and chicken, and they were flavorful and tender. And they come out sizzling on these platters and create a bit of a spectacle! Hehe! We thought that was neat. Going forward, Mughlai is a keeper on my restaurant list. I just hope they deliver!!

I didn't think it was possible to get bad Indian food in NYC, but it is after all.
Not only was the food terrible, but it was very much over-priced for what you got. On average a main dish was about 16-20 dollars (not including rice), but the quality and taste was much lower than what you would get at a place that charges 8-12 dollars. The food was very oily and very bland and the meat dishes came with big chunks of gristle and fat. Additionally, I went with a group of four so I was able to try various dishes and I was disappointed with all of them. The saving grace was the mango lassi, but you can get this at any Indian restaurant (with very little variance in taste), and with a price tag of 5 dollars, I suggest you do.

My friends and I were very disappointed with the food here, as we're all big Indian food fans. There was absolutely no spice and little flavor to the food, even after we asked for them to make it extra spicy. Considering how expensive this place is, we were not happy. The quality of the food was not even on par with the cheap places on 6th street. If you like very very mild, overpriced Indian food however, you may like this place.

Mughlai is a staple in my neighborhood. I absolutely love going there! I always joke to my friends that Mughlai reminds me of the TV show 'Cheers' because they always remember me and remember WHAT I like and HOW I like it. I feel kind of like an Indian Prince, if only for a few hours. My favorite is their bright red-orange Chicken Makhani with some fluffy garlic naan and a yogurt they call "raita". Truly a perfect combination!!

My fiancé and I came to eat lunch here and had no idea what was in store for us. First they sat us down at a table that had old food caked onto the placemats. We asked if the table could be cleaned and the waiter, very annoyed, moved us to another table. We each ordered mango lassi and waited for our main course. We waited 45 minutes and there was no sign of our food. Since it was a small restaurant, we were sure it was not possible they had forgotten about us, but all the people who had come in after us were getting their food. When we asked where our food was it turned out they never even brought our order to the kitchen. We told them to cancel our order, paid for the lassi (outrageous $5 a piece) and left. Our waiter didn't even apologize.

i have a residence on the upper west side, yet i never found myself going to this cute glass restaurant on 75th street ... MUGHALI!! but that will all change now, as i had one fantastic meal there the other night. in fact, it was so damn good and i kept raving about it so much that my wife finally said, please stop telling me and post it to citysearch or zagats or something!! so now here i am telling you about this truly "awesome" meal i had. fresh ingredients, bold, bright colors in the food, fluffy breads, buttery rice ... mmm!! and it all went perfectly with their chilled king fishers (it's an indian beer that i highly recommend). so anyhow, hopefully now that i have told you, the citysearch population, i will stop driving my wife so nuts! cheers!

When living in the area, we ordered from Mughlai once a week or more. The food is mostly very good, one of the best in the city, but I wish it was more consistent, but as you might have noticed, a lot of indian food is the the same. Thus, this place is great.

Mughlai was wonderful. My boyfriend and I had dinner there before the opera. It was wonderful. The wine is a little overpriced but the food was VERY good. At the end of our meal we also received shots of Peach Schnapps on the house and a taste of rice pudding with rosewater. Excellent!
