I went there the other day after work for a quick place to sit and talk with a friend. I just wanted tea and she had a hot sake. I felt bad we weren't going in to eat or spend lots of money... The minute we walked in we were greeted very warmly. Told we could sit where ever we wanted, it did not matter if we were only having tea. The sushi chefs all looked up and smiled. The waitress brought us two glasses of cold water, and a bowl of edamame. She took our orders with a smile and never showed any sign of disappointment. We had a tea and sake - left a nice tip because every one was so sweet and smiley and on our way out the door, a big japanese good-bye from the chefs - all with big smiles!

Pros: super friendly

Cons: have not eaten there yet

I've now eaten at Neo a couple of times, and every time I go, I go with a group so we order a good number of dishes and everyone shares. I've yet to taste anything that wasn't impeccably fresh, prepared, or seasoned. Highlights are the lamb (yes I gnawed bones in a nice restaurant), the tempura shrimp (so tasty I've snuck them into a movie theater as an upscale popcorn replacement), serrano hamachi, ginger prawns, spinach side, kelp salad, YUZU MISO COD, spicy tuna somen. I've also had the chef's selection of sushi - again, each bite was more delish than the last - but the absolute STUNNER was the OCEAN PERCH!!!!! I'm looking at the menu and don't see it listed, so it could be a catch of the day kind of thing - it was so amazing that when everyone ordered dessert, i asked for another round of ocean perch - PLEASE TRY IT! Also, we shared a dessert sampler that included a pandan (?) ice cream - no idea what pandan is, but it makes really good ice cream!

People who live on the UWS are so lucky to have this gem of a restaurant close by. The food is very special and the service is so friendly and attentive - so in short, this is not a standard neighborhood sushi place. Dinner here was a real treat from start to finish, with perfectly fresh ingredients and beautifully presented dishes. The jumbo prawns were some of the best we'd ever had, the sushi assortment - especially the ocean trout - was a revelation, and the green tea tiramisu and pandan ice cream were heavenly. I will be back again and again.

A date took me to Neo this past weekend and we had a GREAT time! They had different flavored sakes, which were amazing, and the food was excellent. I had the softshell crab and it was phenomenal and my date ordered 2 rolls, both of which were amazing. We will definitely be coming back!

Neo Sushi is a great Japanese restaurant. I took a blind date there this weekend and we had a fantastic dinner. I rarely review places, but i had such a great date that i want to keep the positivity flowing. We had a specialty flavored saki, which was delicious. I ordered teh soft shell crab and it was teh best ive ever had. My date had some sort of grilled fish and she ate every bite. We also ordered a specialty spicy tuna roll. We loved every thing we ordered. It wasnt the cheapest place, but it was well worth the price, not to mention....who'd want to take their blind date on a cheap date. I think we will definitely be returning....especially since this may be the place that starts a great romance! For some great Japanese and really creative dishes, try this place!

My recent visit to NEO was a pleasant surprise. I was intrigued by several options on the menu. I told the staff what dishes I was interested in and why and they took care of the rest. They brought me things I would have normally skipped over and each and every dish was solid. Not one disappointing bite, which is rare for my taste when I eat Japanese.

I was impressed with the dessert too. I had green tea tiramisu ? I know it may not sound appetizing, but it was so refreshing and was a great finish after a night of fish and sushi (redundant, I know). I can?t wait to go back and try some new things. I hear the lychee martinis are great too?

The other tables near me were also mentioning that they have been several times and that's always a great sign for a restaurant.

I just wanted to drop a quick note about what a great dining experience I had at Neo Sushi. My paremts were in town last weekend and I wanted to try something new in my Upper West Side neighborhood. We had an absolute ball...especially because of the fantastic sake they kept bringing us! Aside from the great sake, the food was exquisite, with delicious sauces on each dish. The atmosphere was fun and happy and the service was great. I'll definitely be coming back to Neo for good sushi and a nice evening.

The first time I tried Neo Sushi was in 2003 and the experience was phenomenal! Thus, with delectable memories of Neo Sushi's Yuzu Miso Cod lingering in my head, we called to reserve a table. The staff was just as friendly as I remembered. They remain on top of their game and it shows in their consistency in quality food and impeccable service. Sure, Neo is costly to some, but I didn't leave feeling gouged. I always say, "Pay your money like a gentleman, and you will be fed like a gentleman." It also possesses a good balance between casual and upscale. No one will judge you for wearing sneakers, but the atmosphere is intimate and nice enough to take a first date. My favorite dishes are the Hamachi Serrano Chili, Carpaccio Tuna, Tuna Somen, Soft Shell Crab, and the Green Tea Tiramisu!!!

Pros: Genuine Service! Quality Dishes!

Cons: The location is great, but far from my apt.

When I eat sushi, I eat GOOD sushi. I could pay less and and eat more cheap quality fish (that could leave me questionable in the morning), but if that were my goal, I'd go to a buffet! Don't believe me? Try anything wild or anything toro that they have, especially with their accompanied wasabi soy sauce that they lightly brush on before serving, and you will never go back to generic sushi.
The sushi/sashimi that I get at Neo has never been a disappointment. The variety on their menu always leave me thinking "that was good, but what about the next one?" I've yet to be let down. Their fusion dishes are very well presented and the special sauce pairings for each are absolutely wonderful. It was worth every penny!!

My wife and I live on the Upper West Side and decided to try Neo Sushi last Friday night, as we had walked by there many times but never eaten there. We absolutely LOVED this place. We both ordered the field greens salad, which was fresh and delicious, and I ordered a cod dish, which was amazing!! My wife ordered something called seafood dynamite, and she loved it. We also ordered soft shell crab tempura and it was the best we've ever had. The service was great here and so was the atmosphere. Neo Sushi seemed like an upscale japanese/sushi restaurant great for a date spot but it also seemed very family and kid friendly. I definitely recommend this place.

i dont normally take the time to write reviews but Neo was just so
phenomenal i had to post a comment. the sushi was very fresh and it's
very apparent the fish were of top quality. every dish has its own
unique sauce, rather than your typical soy sauce/wasabi combo - which i
thought was a real nice touch. everything was seasoned to perfection:
the flavors had an excellent balance of mild strength without
overpowering the fish. bottom line: everything from the top-grade fish,
the positively eclectic menu, the individual complementing sauces, all
the way down to the flawless texture of the sushi were nothing short of
amazing. amazing doesn't even do it justice. i highly recommend the
Spicy Tuna Somen and the green tea tiramisu dessert.

Cozy, modern and friendly services but the food didn't match up w/ the look of the restaurant. Expensive and small portion. Don't get the special rolls, $18 and you will only get 8 small pieces. We had 4 special rolls and end up w/ an empty stomach leaving the restaurant and the bill came out to be over $100. I definitely not recommend this place if you want a full stomach and not break your wallet

Service and decor wasn't bad at all. Food presentation was great. Taste was just very average. Was disappointed that they have a menu that didn't have anything that you would expect a Japanese restaurant to have...All I wanted to order was a Sushi dinner, udon, or something simple that every Japanese restaurant should have, no, they didn't have that...it is almost like you walk into a Italian resturant asking for pasta and they tell you they don't serve that....anyhow, this is not the only reason I am giving just two stars, the food was way over priced. Rolls were small for the price they charged. I woudln't mind paying for it if they didn't explicitly stated on their menu that these are big rolls...the averge price for these rolls are $16-$19/roll...

My girlfriend and I were doing some shopping on the upperwest this weekend and got the urge for some sushi. We walked by this place and it was pretty packed inside so we decided to give it a try. WOW!! Probably the best sushi we ever had. We asked the server for her suggestions and everything she sent us was amazing.

A true Upper West mainstay, Neo has proven itself to be not only a must try, but a must try again! I went with 2 friends for an early dinner and we decided on the omakase to see what the sushi chefs could whip up for us. We were not disappointed- from the buttery O-Toro to the Sweet "melt in your mouth" Uni flown in from Japan, every savory bite left us wanting more.

RECOMMEND: Tuna Carpaccio Neo Style and anything in their Tofu Sauce

I have been living in downtown Manhattan for over 10 years and I will still travel all the way to the Upper West Side for this sushi! The quality is the freshest I've tasted. The style and preparation of the food lends itself to the pride and craftsmanship that real Japanese sushi chefs bring to their work. Presentation is delectable not to mention the exquisite sauces that cater to the taste buds. This is not your average sushi joint. If you're looking for quantity over quality, then Neo is not for you. However, if you enjoy high quality fish with a well versed staff readily at your service, then Neo is a must try.

I went to this wonderful sushi restaurant last night, everything was just amazing. The service was great. The stuffs were very nice and attentive. Most important of all, the sushi was delicious! And guess what, you even don't need soy sauce to eat them, since different sushis and rolls have different dressing on them or on the same plate. As my waiter said that soy sauce was actually their "biggest enemy" there. (^_^). I also tried couple of their kitchen dishes and they were all excellent, too. The baby shrimp tempura bite with spicy aioli sauce was just amazing. And the special Neo sauce for steaks was yummy too ( i never know that a Japanese restaurant can make so good steaks).I would definitely go there again, if I'm in the area and in the mood for sushi.

Neo is a very classic restaurant. They give you great service and also always have daily specials. This is a wonderfully place to dine at with your friends and family! I really love the creativity. They make me want to try all the items on their menu. Each sushi has a different topping on them. Not only are the food wonderfully made with great detail, their sushi rolls are the best I've ever tasted so far. The texture of their rice is just right. Even a simple avocado can make me have great appetite! I want to also recommend people to try the spicy tuna somen ! It's such a cool dish thats like with crispy noodles outside and inside wrapped with amazing spicy tuna. I haven't been to a restaurant that great before ! Really I love this place!

You can't even really call this place a restaurant, its a little corner hole in the wall that over-charges for thier sushi which tastes horrible!! The staff is so rude and even OFFENSIVE!! There were FLIES buzzing around everywhere which leads me to believe that this place is not at all clean, so I wouldn't chance eating there ever again. We spent so much money on sushi you can get at a grocery store that would taste better. The owner has pictures of himself with celebrities all over the ugly wood pannel walls (SO TACKY!!) Ugghh, this place is just plain gross and a waste of time. So many other great sushi restaurants in manhattan!!

Like most sushi lovers, I've tried all the popular Japanese restaurants in NYC: Nobu, Tomoe, Bond St., Blue Ribbon Sushi, Sushi of Gari, etc. Neo tops them all! Every piece of fish tasted like a little piece of heaven...I've never had sushi taste so fresh consistently bite after bite. I was a bit skeptical when I first sat down because I realized that I wouldn't have any soy sauce to mask the taste of fish I thought might taste "gamey". But none of the fish I had tasted gamey at all and the special sauces created for every piece made each bite a delightful and flavorful experience. Besides the sushi/sashimi tasting menu, my friends and I also tried the chef's special grilled crab, miso cod and the tuna carpaccio--all of which were quite delicious. The green tea tiramisu is also definitely worth trying. Even though Neo is a bit on the pricey side, the service, food and ambience certainly made up for it. The entire staff seemed extremely friendly and helpful. Overall, I had a great experience!

I truely do enjoy dining at Neo. However, I can only enjoy it on an occasional basis due to the very high prices...$7 for ONE bite-size piece of shashimi. Prices aside, the fish is extremely fresh. My taste buds have been ruined for lunch time take-out spots because they just can't compare. The service at Neo is attentive and the staff is well informed. They're very good with the recommendations if you need help.

Sushi and appetizers were very good, but the prices are totally outrageous. You can't find a roll for less than $10, and some are as much as $20.

My wife and I have been to Neo twice so far (its a long trip from the East side!), but both times have been really good.
Sushi is fresh and unique. Chef uses special sauces to highlight individual fish flavors, making soy-sauce obsolete. Both times we were with a small group, and we ended up trying and liking 6 different appetizers (yellowtail & jalapeno was almost exactly like the one in Nobu!). My only complaint was that sushi pieces tend to be very small (its good if you are in the mood to try 15 different flavors of sushi, but it does reflect in the price)
Neo is not cheap. There were 6 of us, and the dinner was about $80 per person including tip (admittedly, we had a lot of food, and a fair amount of sake).
Ambience is pleasant, and the service was very attentive but not intrusive.

Neo has a great menu with some new ideas for sushi. I definately was impressed with many of the dishes. The whole eperience is worth it, except for the fact they have huge prices for their food. I wouldn't make it a routine dinner, butits nice spot to hit.

Definitely go on a week night when it is not crowded and you can enjoy the food without feeling cramped. The sushi is truly wonderful - the best salmon sushi is the 'yaki' - v. slightly seared and the uni is mouthwatering. The neo spicy tuna roll is good, v. good, but not necessarily $17 worth of good. Presentation is wonderful and the sake selection is fabulous.

Definitely lived up to my expectations. Prices were a bit high but the dining experience was excellent. Inventive, delicious sushi.

Move over Nobu, say goodbye Bond Street. Neo Sushi overpowers them both. Surprisingly, I am shoked they did not get best Japanese restaurant of New York. The food is terrific and service excellent. The best Japanese Fusion Restaurant from the East Coast to the West Coast. Definitely give it a try to impress that first date.

Btw..the picture displayed is for Sakura of Japan not Neo Sushi.

Neo provides a memorable sushi dining experience. We sampled about 12 different dishes and EACH one was delicious! Each dish has a unique sauce and appealing presentation. The dishes are creative and flavorful. They do not use wasabi or soy sauce in their dishes which enables you to really appreciate the taste/texture of each selection. Josh and his staff are top-rate, professional and hospitable. I WISH we had one in San Francisco.

What an amazing experience! As a sushi purist, I was very skeptical of "new" sushi, but am a total convert. We started with the miso cod, which was arguably better than its excellent counterpart at Nobu. The lightly citrusy yuzu was a perfect addition to the miso. Next, a few selections from the wide array of tempura, and then - sushi that is hands-down better than any I've had in the city. Melt-in-your mouth uni, incredible slightly seared salmon. Wonderful concoctions, beautifully presented. Helpful guidance from an attentive server. I'm a tough critic, and can't help but give top marks to this newcomer.
