First I had Jessica, who really "got" me weird hair, but she moved back to CA and I thought, "Oh no! After three years with her how am I going to fare with someone else??" Now I have Heather, who's a Park Slope native returned to her

I usually pay $15 for a hair cut but not always excited with the result. So I thought I'd try paying more. I paid $70, then $15 for the tip.

It was the WORST haircut of my whole life. I came in there just wanting a trim. Simple. I

I am taking the time now - before work - because I actually AVE time before work to write. About 2 months ago I went to Jessica Rose for a Keratin Complex smoothing treatment. She is certified for this process and I was in desparation.. I have medium length, somewhat curly, color treated hair. My hair is prone to frizzies and split ends and truly does what it wants. Bad hair days outnumber good hair. I would get excited when I had a 'good bangs' day.

The Keratin Complex treatment smooths the hair follicles, gives it shine and makes blow drying a breeze. It was a long process and Jessica's attention to detail made it all worthwhile... I honestly have not had a bad hair day since then... I am blown away by the ease of upkeep. (it is guaranteed for 3 months but I was told it could last longer with proper care - proper care being using the Keratin shampoo and condition) . I can now run a brush through my hair and I am ready to go.. I can actually blow dry my own hair without the need for being a contortionist with dryer and brushes. I use my fingers!

Even with all the rain and snow we have had - no frizzies! and I still have shiny bouncy hair...take the time, spend a little extra and GET this treatment! It is truly the best thing I have ever done for my hair

Pros: nice atmosphere, great music, friendly staff

Sadly, this place didn't deliver. I got a crappy dye job and when I needed them to fix it they gave me a load of doodie. I paid $350 for the favor of purple hair (I'm blonde. wasn't looking for purple. they screwed up the toner.) they "let" me come back the next day t get it fixed.
do yourself a favor and go to Rapunzel Rapunzel (where I just went) and get it right the first time! They truly know what they are doing at Rapunzel, and I paid half of what I did at medusa. and the dye is organic!!

Cons: staff don't care what you look like when you leave

I have medium length curly/wavy hair and usually go in just asking for a trim. I saw Mari for my first cut and it was OK. Then I saw Jessica who gave me a great haircut the first time I saw her. The 2nd one, was another OK, but the first one was good enough that I went back; to get one of the worst haircuts ever. I walked out of there feeling like I looked like a homeless woman that didn't know how to comb her hair. I could not believe a stylist would let someone walk out of your salon as your 'advertisement' looking like that. I pulled my hoodie up and went home to see if i could make it look better. The verdict - not really. And it was cut in such a way that a corrective cut probably would've been worse. I had to buy new product to get my hair to look anything presentable. I had given her license on that cut - wanting to shorten my hair a bit. What a mess that turned out to be. When I finally could not take it anymore, I cut my hair myself, something I have NEVER done before and felt so much better immediately. If you can believe it, even after that I went back again - to Jessica - and got a good cut! So, I went back what would end up being my final time. The haircut seemed to be going well when she pulled out the thinning shears (I have extremely fine hair - it is not thick & I'm pretty sure it does not need thinned) and then she twisted my hair into locks and cut up the shafts - totally wrecking any chance for my curls to keep their shape. Furthermore - she cut one layer really short & left the other one long - so I had this two-tiered cut that I couldn't pull back and would not look good unless I was straight out of the shower, if I was lucky. So yeah, that was it! I like the place and the vibe but I guess unless you can really speak up and tell your stylist exactly what you want or don't want (I'm not great at that obviously), I wouldn't recommend this spot. Plus the cash only pay is burdensome.

First time to citysearch here, but I felt compelled to review my hair cut & color, it is absolutely amazing! I'm a customer who comes regularly from from another state just to get my hair done at this salon. Natasha does an AMAZING job with my color and cut. I've been many shades of blonde for many years, and a lot of times I haven't been too happy. Natasha has managed to give me such a wonderful natural color, with lots of beautiful highlights! I'm often asked who does my hair. I owe it all to Natasha! Give her a try you won't be disappointed, but good luck getting an appointment she only works the weekends!

The star rating applies to the hair cut, not the salon in general. I had my hair cut a week or so ago by Jessica Rose. I wanted a trim, but I ended up with a badly layered, choppy cut which will take a good 3-6 months to grow out. For some reason, she also used thinning shears on my hair, which only made things worse. Maybe she was having a bad day, but I was left with one of the worst cuts I've had in years.

Mary Nocerino at Medusa has been my hair cutter for many years. I first went to her after seeing someone I knew with a hair cut that was incredibly flattering, even though her hair is very different from mine. I thought whoever styled this hair was a master hair cutter! Mary is very personable and does a wonderful job cutting hair. her hours are limited, though, so you should book an appointment in advance!

I arrived with apologies ten minutes late and was treated with a really nasty attitude and told my cut would be rushed. When I offered to reschedule, if she couldn't do a good job, was told I might as well leave, and treated to snickers and laughter. I've been treated better when inadvertently late for a surgeon... or could it be I wasn't the right type of client for this hipper than thou salon? Would never set foot in there again!

.I recently moved to the slope and wanted to try Medusa after seeing what seemed like pretty decent reviews. It's only a block or so from my apt, and seemed like a really chill low key place.
My hair was very long and in dire need of a trim and I hadn't had a touch up on my blond highlights for at least 5 months. I requested that they match my roots to the rest of my blond highlighted hair.
I sat in the chair for what seemed like forever, and then waited while I processed. Then after I was shampooed they put some weird toner on my hair (WHICH OF COURSE I SAID I NEVER HAD A SUCH TONER).

when they took the towel off my head my hair was MUCH darker than the roots I came in with. To make matters worse I had horrible bleedmarks from the highlights. She worked quickly to chop off at least 4-5 inches of my long hair after requesting that no more than 2 inches be cut off. 3.5 hours later.....

She dried (by this i mean just shook my head around with the dryer haphazardly) and I left with a head that was still damp. When I saw the almost dry version it was a mousey brown with a ting of GREEN. Checking out they charged me $180! To be honest, I didn't even realize how bad it was until I got home and immediately burst into tears. My hair was GREEN. Literally.
I trekked back to Manhattan to my old salon cutler to get this mess fixed asap, thank god i did. The saint who fixed this mess let me know that if I had waited this gross toner would have been much harder to get out. Once the toner was out, it revealed the butcher job she did with the highlights...bleed marks GALORE. My girl re did my highlights and brightened me back to gorgeous blond, taking her 3 hours in total to correct the mess. I won?t even SAY how much THAT cost me on top of the $180 I had already paid. Needless to say, stay away from Medusa unless you wish to have hair that resembles well?the name says it all.

I came into Medusa with fugly orange hair after trying to lighten it at home myself. Lailah gave me an honest evaluation, and painstakingly hilighted and toned until my hair looked natural again, and it even looked like the hair color I had originally been trying for!
Jessica Rose also gives fabulous cuts, and everyone there is great! Well worth the cash!

the day before my birthday, and a very a big conference, I decided to get a hair cut to get rid of split ends and add some shape. I had ribcage-length hair and i requested that the stylist (mari) maintain the length. I also stressed that my bangs remained long as well. But, she ended up cutting my hair shoulder length and my bangs above my eyebrows. I was horrified, and to top it all off - she blow-dried it into a frizzy mess. One of the worst haircuts I've ever received ended up costing $99.

My two teen sons often wanted to put their head in a sack after haircuts that were too uncool. Now they are happy to go to Anastasia, who always listens and never does anything without checking it out with them first. Great experience for all of us!

I had a great experience at Medusa and highly recommend it. I was looking for a change but didn't know exactly what I wanted. Lailah had a great suggestion and I went with it. I walked out feeling GREAT and look forward to my next experience at Medusa.

So I decided to try getting my haircut in Brooklyn instead of trekking to Manhattan as I usually do.
I tried Medusa after seeing it on this site. The place itself asethetic wise is charming. All the girls that work there seem amicable and the social atmosphere is pleasing.I arrived 10 minutes late due to not being able to find the place, the stylist told me because of this she couldnt do layers in my hair because she had no time. She was friendly and chatty and listened to my requests, though she insisted on cutting my hair shorter than I wanted. The price was also higher than what I had seen listed on Yelp and other sites, the place I also only takes cash. I wound up spending $68 on the cut and left a $10 tip. As a grad student this was a large price for a so so cut. I doubt I will go back, but it wasn't an awful experience by any means.

Not one to rave about my NYC consumer experiences, let alone my hair triumphs, however I found my experience at Medusa to be exceptional. Initially my service was a bit standard (i.e. get shuffled around, wait for some acknowledgement, feel privileged I should pay NY prices for something, etc etc) then I was introduced to my hairdresser. She was professional, courteous, and highly qualified. Turns out she worked in the fashion circuit for some time and has handled a few A-list clients... I believe it!! My hair has never been so current. I am impressed with Kelly's styling abilities. The client before me left with an exquisite honey blond that I will remember for my next color visit, and I have never been complimented this much on my hair. Generally not a girly-girl, but I'm kinda a convert. Kelly's professional, instinctual, and interpretive abilities landed me into "happy client" territory that I won't forget. and feel the urge to share. Go to Medusa!! Ask for Kelly!!

When I moved to Brooklyn, I had a hard time finding a hair stylist that I could commit to. I tried several, but was never truly pleased with the results; until I found Maury at Medusa. The first haircut she gave me was the best one I have ever had, and since then she has consistently given me exactly what I want. I have short hair and it can be challenging to find a stylist that knows the right way to do a short cut on a woman, but Maury always gets the shape and texture just right, and knows how to cut it so as it grows out, between cuts, it maintains both. Not only is she skilled and talented, but she is sweet, smart and funny. I look forward to haircut appointments, not only because I know I will look great when I leave, but also because I get to hang out with a cool girl for an hour.

Kym is professional, friendly, smart, knowledgeable and has an awesome sense of style.

She's has been cutting my hair for 12 years, ever since I moved to New York. Obviously, I like the way she cuts my hair, and in that time period, I've had a lot of different cuts! I think every one of them has been flattering, and I rely on her advice and great eye. I highly recommend her!

Medusa is a nice, low-key salon with very reasonable rates.

I live in Astoria, so its a bit of a hike to get here but its absolutely worth it and I would never go anywhere else. My incredible stylist, Maury is truly talented. I never know what to do with my hair and trust me, my hair is not easy to cut. I've always had too much hair for most stylist to handle but she's so intuitive, she always knows exactly what to do with it. I basically walk in and tell her, "do whatever you want" and she creates different dazzling color schemes for my highlights and it always looks amazing. She takes her time and the best thing about her is that she actually cares about your hair and how you feel after she's done. Warm, friendly and smart, I always feel like I'm hanging out with my best friend while I'm getting a haircut. She's the greatest, hands down.
The salon is decorated with the most sly murals of 50's pin-up girls. Its way too cool for its area. Medusa's like the cooler, worldly, older sister of Park Slope. Oh, and its totally reasonable and a great value.

After visiting several salons in the park slope area recommended by friends and recieving one awful haircut after another, I decided to try Medusa's based simply on the AWESOME 50's pin up girl- red velvet couch decor. After lounging around for about 5 short minutes flipping through some vintage Marilyn Monroe picture magazines, I was introduced to my very FRIENDLY gorgeous rock-a-billy cool stylist named, glamorously, Jessica Rose. Jessica listened carefully to my hair sob story and carefully discussed what I wanted. When we felt that we both understood each other, I was escorted to the most comfortable hair washing chair ever. It was the first time I didn't have to contort into an odd position to have my hair washed. The woman who washed my hair had me in a state of goo- goo gaa-ing ecstasy with her professional massage level head rubbing. I was then delivered back into the capable hands of Jessica. I then was the happy recipient of the BEST HAIRCUT I'VE HAD. Several of my friends have taken one lookd at me and asked for Jessica's number so they could go get their haircut. I have been more than pleased to give them her info. THIS WAS THE BEST EXPERIENCE I HAVE EVER HAD IN A SALON!

All the girls are good, but I'd really recommend Kelly: she knows what she's doing with hair, but more importantly she knows how to handle the nerves and crazyness that happen to people when they get in front of a mirror about to have their hair cut off! I think she works weekends mainly. Always fun and interesting conversation.

I will never go to anyone else again! I have been seeing Lailah at Medusa for a few years, and every hair cut and color she has ever given me has been great! Sometimes I know what I want and she'll do exactly what I envisioned; but sometimes I'm not sure and am delighted by her ideas. She's great at working with people's individual style, hair type, etc. Everyone at the salon is friendly, and the decor is super-cute and the vibe is very relaxing. The prices are low considering the high style you get. A great place to get a cut or color!

She's great at working with people's individual style, hair type, etc. Everyone at the salon is friendly, and the decor is super-cute and the vibe is very relaxing. The prices are low considering the high style you get. A great place to get a cut or color!

Pros: Thrilled with my hair every time, nice ambiance

Cons: none

.

I used to get my hair cut on Madison Avenue for more than twice the price, but I'm just as happy getting my hair cut now by Natasha (and staying in my neighborhood)! Great color and a great cut! Plus, she's cool as hell. Two thumbs up!

Been going to Anastasia now for quite some time, and couldn't be happier. She is very talented, listens, and consistently does an excellent job. My hair has never grown out better (and it grows fast btw) so I still looked freshly trimmed even 3 weeks after my cut. That has never happened at any other salon I have been to in manhattan.

Words cannot describe just how elated I've been with my haircut from these folks. For the last 10 years I've been cutting my own hair. I decided to try something new. Needless to say I will be back again. And I've been telling my friends as well.

I always decide to get my haircut on a whim, so whenever I make an appt at Medusa, I never go to the same stylist....yet I ALWAYS get a great cut. I love this place. I know whomever my stylist is will give me a great new cut and it grows out wonderfully. And the prices are extremely reasonable (especially by NYC standards). In fact, I'm going to make an appt today!

I went in there to donate my hair to locks of love. I wanted to donate the 10 inches and not a centimeter more and that I wanted to still be able to put my hair in a pony tail. I called before hand to see if they had the necessary bags to place the hair in, they said yes. She took out a ruler, measured out 10 inches, then promptly cut off 13, later which she placed in garbage bag. She further insulted me by giving me an asymmetrical flock of seagulls hair cut and put "serum" aka oil in my hair, She handed me my hair in a bag and told me to come back when i was ready to do more, because I may just be in shock with my new short hair. I wanted to tell her to take a pic of my mug because that was the last time she would see me. Don't go here unless you know how to tell someone what you want using the jedi mind trick, because they don't listen AT ALL!!!

I asked for subtle layers and was then criminally overcharged for a mullet. Further, my hair was flat ironed instead of properly blown straight. I now feel ready for trailer-bar-hopping in New Jersey because after the price of this haircut, that's about the only nightlife I can afford :(

I've gone with Anastasia a couple of times now and she does a great job. She actually does what I ask for which is surprisingly hard to get. Interesting person who will only chat as much as you want to chat.
I actually like the atmosphere of the place. It very small and there is usually only 2 or 3 stylists working at any given time. The music can be decent(at least they don't try to make it into a disco) and everyone seems pretty nice.

I'd been going to the same stylist for 15+ years but wanted to try someplace in Brooklyn. I was nervous, but Anastasia listened attentively and gave me a great haircut. She did exactly what I asked and worked to make it exactly as I liked. When I wanted it slightly shorter the next time, no problem. Great service at a decent price. The atmosphere is a little "eh," but it is worth it.

I also was recommended to Natasha and I must say MY experience was worth every cent! She highlighted and cut my hair it looks great! The hues in my hair complement the color of my eyes! I will never go to anyone else again. The haircut was one of the best ever. SHE IS A PRO!

Simply put - Never Again. The salon has 2 chairs and is questionably clean. The reviews here and the receptionist both raved about Natasha and so I made an appointment with her. She's sweet and courteous but, despite her "many many yrs of experience", is definitely amateur. First mistake, my hair was washed before she was able to look at it dry and during my haircut she kept asking how it falls when it's dry. She then chopped my hair off despite my repeated requests to keep the length long. And when I explained to her that there were bits sticking out in the back (after she had dried it) she proceeded to randomly snip away. For $80, I now have what looks like a mullet. Seriously, go somewhere else.

I've been getting my haircut from Kelly for years. I followed her
here after she moved from a salon in the West Village, and it's so worth
the commute. I was searching forever for somebody who could give me
great professional yet stylish cuts, and I won't go to anyone else
now. She also does my highlights and always understands the right
color/look I want to achieve. I highly recommend, as long as you
don't take my appointment!

Most distressing color experience l have ever had. I went to get half head highlights. I asked for light honey blonde. When she was done my hair was a green lifeless mess. I phoned to express my distress, l was told to return and have a toner added. Which only tinted my hair darker! l walked home in tears. I was treated with complete indifference asked why l was unhappy, because l looked 'pretty' with my new green hair. I was not even offered a hello on my return, when quite clearly they had destroyed my previously blonde hair, and because there was not a spare chair l was given a hand held mirror to view my new dark and green hair. GUTTED and DISGUSTED! AND the owner was there the whole time and never said a word. Not kidding my hair was ruined,

I've shuffled back and forth between Manhattan and Brooklyn looking for the best hairdresser in town. No longer! I am increasingly impressed with Kelly's abilities to give me the perfect haircut: sophisticated and current yet without overreaching. I needed something versatile this time around, a cut that would be tamed enough for a young professional yet flirty enough for evenings. She did a great job translating what I had envisioned. And better yet, there's none of that Soho snobbery or gouging. I paid $52 for a cut and blow-dry. Highly Reccommeded!

I read the reviews for this place and expected a friendly atmosphere with good prices. The cut was done with good skill, but not better then other places for the price I payed. It was very expensive and unfriendly. If your looking for a good cut and dont mind the price then pick something better, this place is not worth the value. I don't recommend the place.

I've been living in NYC for 10 years, and I finally found a salon I like! That should really say it all!

ATMOSPHERE: Young, clean, and hip yet elegant. The mirrors are beautiful, and I loved that each client had their own mirror, so others don't all look at you while you are being worked on. The floors were constantly kept tidy and hair-free. The place is cozy, but provides sufficient space (not cramped like other places).

WORK: My highlights and cut turned out perfect, but the blowdry didn't last for more than a day (first time that happened to me; usually it stays for minimum 3 days).

OVERALL: There was no annoying chit-chat, the prices were reasonable, and the hairstylists are all great; but the management should accomodate the customer by accepting credit cards. My blowdry was short-lived, but I don't think I speak for all with this comment.

I've been going to Medusa for a couple of years, and followed Joseph to their new place, Medusa North, which is on 7th but closer to Flatbush. Joseph is so talented, and he really listens to what I want, but manages to give me really good suggestions -- I'm always happy when I leave. Strangers complement my hair and ask me where I get it cut, and I've recommended him to several people. My hair is curly, and he cuts it so it looks cute curly or when I blow it out. I always feel happy when I'm there -- the vibe is really cool and laid back, the people working there are all friendly, and I think you get an amazing cut for a fair price. Definitely worth checking out!

I went to Lailah at Medusa, who gave me the haircut of a lifetime. And I am hair-obsessed (especially for a guy), so that is saying something.

Lailah is an extremely talented hairdresser who understands how to work with different types of hair and hair problems. She is professional, accommodating, and really nice, and I walked out of the salon feeling like a million bucks.

As for the salon itself, it's well-kept and well-designed, and the staff is really easy to work with. I really enjoyed my experience there, and plan to go back.
