I really like this sushi place, although I've also eaten the cooked food and other dishes. The prices are very reasonable and the food good, straight up Japanese fare. The salmon lover's roll and the grilled cod are two of my favorite dishes. There is quite a large regular clientele, of which my family and friends are included. I've been to a lot more expensive restaurants, but if you're looking for traditional Japanese, not fusion, not modern - try East.

Pros: Friendly manager and staff

Cons: Gets very crowded on Wednesdays and Mondays :-)

WE also have different types of japanese food within the branch of east restaurant. As probably you may have thought, do they have a west?
well yes we do.
we have a udon west in St. Marks
we also have one on 47th street a japanese drink and eat type of restaurant.
Also there is a branch called Sushi boy almost never seen is also a Sushi place that has branched off of east, and not to forget the restaurant that once used to be sushi boy, terakawa ramen

even though it looks to you as if it's not japanese in the kitchen, a Mr. Terakawa from japan that opened it and trained the chef's inside to cook just as great for 1 whole month.

keep in mind not all restaurants are the best.
and if something bad happens we are very sorry please tell us how to inprove

Pros: Most of the East Restaurant Co. branches listed

Ok, East was recommended to me by a co-worker that lives in the neighborhood. I've eaten there about 4 times. Today is the last time I will ever eat there. I walked to order take out lunch, I was not greeted by either one of the 2 Hosts: Male or Female. usually I'm not swayed by this BUT I watched them meet, greet and bid farewells to the other customers. I placed my order and as always the humble Japanese sushi chef smiles and greets me as he does everyone. After ordering I left to get some cash from the ATM. I Walk past the host once again, no eye contact and no farewell to poor ole me. Ok I return with my cash (This time the entrance was unoccupied) No Prob. When my order was ready I paid. When I got back to my office on 58th street I notice that I wasn't given any WASABI OR PICKLED GINGER?! Ok I return for the 5th time to tell them that I wasn't given any pickled ginger or wasabi (No apologies to me) and The busboy gives me three pre packed ginger from the mini fridge, I take the ginger only to find that the ginger is dry meaning it's been sitting in the fridge a little TOO long. Their customer service was God Awful. The nicest people are the busboys and the Sushi Chefs. Who needs it I'll take my business elsewhere. Sometimes it makes me wonder if It's a BLACK thing Hmmmmm. Yep I said it! NOTE: I have NOTHING against this establishment other than their POOR customer service.

I love it here -- definitely not Nobu or even Haru, but the sushi is always fresh and is always good. They run a great deal with Japas 55 (the karaoke place upstairs) that always makes for a fun evening!

Pros: Inexpensive, Quick Service

Cons: Lack of Ambiance

I just wanted to refute the previous reviewer's comment -- East 53 Teriyaki house is not run by the same management as the East chain. As for East chain in general, it's harmless, cheap and decent fish. Don't take your date if you want to impress but it's good enough for a quick sushi when you don't want to spend a ton of money.

This branch of East - now known as East 53rd Teriyaki House is very good for a cheap, quick sushi or teriyaki lunch. While, clearly, not exeptional - the food is good and inexpensive.
