i simply love the selection of food offered on the terrapin menu! whether you're in the mood for a lighter fare in their bistro, or a delicious entree in their more formal dining room, you've found the right place. i also love the fact that terrapin uses local, organic produce, something many restaurants simply don't do. also, the ambiance is simply astounding. whether dining on the beautiful patio, the casual, modern bistro, or the more elegant dining room, you will experience a great meal in a lovely setting!

Let me start by saying that I do not normally write reviews, but I felt that this needed to be said.
When I was first introduced to this restaurant in 2000, I was blown away. I was in the restaurant business for 20+ years and I loved it . Terrapin was what I had been looking for in our area. I loved this place and went as often as I could.
My last 3 expierences will keep me from ever crossing their threshold again.
My last expierence was 9/12.There was a group of 8 of us who went. We all like fine dinning and know what to expect out of such an evening.
To start with the service was poor at best, the food was cold and my steak was overpriced.
My wifes wine glass was never refilled or asked to be refilled. No bread ever brought to the table until requested, and we gave them plenty of time. I could go on.
It was a disappointment.
The time prior to this they droped my entree in front of us and the sauce got all over both of us. They neither comped anything or attempted to pay for dry cleaning.
My wife ate her dinner while I sat and watched. WTF.
We live 1hr. away and do not mind traveling for a great meal and am sorry to say that we will not be returning to Terrapin. I will travel south into Westchester.

Pros: Still some good items.

Cons: where do I start?

Terrapin is extremely cool. Whenever I'm in Dutchess county I always try to steer the day's events toward Rhinebeck so that I have an excuse to drop by and eat/drink something delightful.

Bistro favorites include the calamari and the duck quesadilla. I'm not much of a fish person but the Mizuna Salad with the salmon is also excellent, and makes for a nice, light lunch.

I tend to frequent the bistro more than the dining room, but anytime I've gone for the gold and had dinner on the fancy side it's been great. The room itself is huge and gorgeous, and the food is also huge, also gorgeous, with the added bonus of tasting phenomenal. Favorite dishes there are the lamb and the bowtie pasta with broccoli rabe. The portions are so generous I almost always end up taking home enough for lunch the next day.

The wine list is extensive and the beer selection is awesome. The beverage manager must be extremely savvy because the beer menu (which is updated frequently) is always packed with really interesting NY craft brews that you'd be hard pressed to find together anywhere else. I almost always get a drink with dinner just to taste what new brews they have in.

All around a winner!

Cons: It's too far from me!

Terrapin is a wonderful restaurant for elegant meals as well as casual dining. The atmosphere in the old church is almost as impressive as the food. When it's available, the prix fixe menu is a steal!

Terrapin is housed in a renovated church in historic Rhinebeck, NY.The food can be casual or elaborate, but it is all good. The ambiance is fun and funky. Eating here feels like a special night out.

Hands down, this is my favorite restaurant in the Hudson Valley!

It started it out as a special occasion place, birthdays, anniversaries and that sort of thing. But as our love for the food grew, so did our addiction to Terrapin.

Now we don't wait to have a holiday or special event to eat there, we'll eat there for all sorts of reasons, craving a super great burger to wanting to stare longingly into space at the high cathedral ceilings while noshing on their take on peking duck.

Terrapin's other more casual side is a great alternative when I'm craving their food without the formality of the dining room. Luckily, most of my favorite things they serve in the restaurant can be found in the other part of the restaurant as well.

We've been dining at Terrapin for some time. Of all the restaurants in the area, Terrapin remains our absolute fave! Don't wait for some special excuse to go there, just go and enjoy.

Pros: delicious food, friendly service, two different rooms to chose from

Cons: no reservations in the bistro

as a city transplant living in the Hudson Valley, I cherish the few establishments I've been able to call my foodie faves.

Terrapin is definitely one of these establishments.

We frequent the Bistro for lunch and dinner a few times a month for sure. You've never had a burger as delish as the one they make on the "other side" of the restaurant. Lately, we've been saving room for dessert! They have tapas portions, and we take advantage by ordering more than a couple at the end of the meal.

There is the restaurant.... we adore the restaurant. We've been there without a reservation, but I wouldn't recommend it. On the restaurant side, every table along the banquets or the upper balcony will do. It's set in an old church, and I catch myself staring upwards at the high ceilings from time to time throughout my meal.

Our favorite dishes include the calimari (which I never eat anywhere else), Peking Duck, Hanger Steak and I love the Ahi Tuna, although my guy finds it a little too busy.

There's something neat about the combination of food, service, ambiance and experience of eating at Terrapin. It's upscale, but far from uptight. We feel relaxed when we eat here, and always surprised by how great our meal is.

They've been around for 10 years for a really good reason, it's a wonderful place to eat!

Whereas this was one of my favorite destination restaurants when it first opened, I have been repeatedly disappointed with both the service and quality of the food during my recent visits. Tonight I had salmon that was overcooked and fairly tasteless along with spinach that tasted like it was simply boiled along with tasty mashed potatoes.
