Best Italian in Buffalo!
The sauce is to die for and the service is excellent. Get there right at 11:00am for lunch and you will be seated right away.

Bear with me while I provide some background information. My family moved from Northern Kentucky (the Cincinnati area) to Kenmore in 1952, when I was 3, and we resided there until 1960, when my father's employer transferred him back. Buffalo is the first home I can remember.
Growing up there afforded us the opportunity to eat out on a fairly frequent basis, and this was the dawn of the "fast food" era. MacDonalds had not yet arrived, but I do remember going to Henry's Hamburgers. Two of my favorite eateries in Kenmore were Brinson's (now the Royal Restaurant) and Your Host. However, the unrivaled place of choice was Chef's.
Chef's was much physically smaller then, with a limited number of tables in the original dining room, but it was always a treat to go there.
Quite a few years after returning to Kentucky, I began planning to visit my boyhood home. Unfortunately, my idea did not reach fruition until two years ago, in 2008. My wife and our then ten-year-old daughter had often been subjected to my stories of growing up in Buffalo, and I was eager to show them precisely where my adventures had taken place, so we made vacation plans to visit Western New York.
Because we'd be celebrating our fifteenth wedding anniversary while in Buffalo, I knew where we would have to eat that evening. I e-mailed Chef's and explained our situation. I also asked if a small anniversary cake could be provided.
I wondered if I would recognize the restaurant. It had been nearly a half century since I'd been there, and, frankly, it didn't quite match the memory I had. Nonetheless, we had a magnificent meal. We are pasta fans to begin with, and we thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. My family now knew that I had not exaggerated about Chef's food.
Then came the surprise. I asked for the ticket and was duly informed that our meal was on the house. I was absolutely floored. We had great food and wonderful hospitality----and we weren't charged a penny for it. What an anniversary gift!
When we returned home, I asked my daughter what she had most enjoyed. No, it wasn't Niagara Falls or Old Fort Niagara or going shopping. It was eating at Chef's. She now says that it's her favorite restaurant.
Both she and my wife say they want to go back to Chef's. And we will. I can't say when, but there's no doubt that we'll be back.

All i can say about this restaurant was that i came back early from Rochester, NY to have a second meal at this restaurant. I loved the food there and the quantity. There have decent prices for quality food. The bread was very very fresh. I went there for a business trip and since then I have been hoping that I get a client in that region.

This place is a favorite when I want to show an out of towner what Buffalo is all about! I love that they have dandelion salad and who can leave there without an order of spaghetti parm? I hope they never change the entrance into that kitchen with all the pots going---I just love it.

I've been here a couple of times (always with a reservation) and it has always been good. I only ever order the spaghetti parmesean because that is what they are known for and it is great.
I also buy their spaghetti sauce in the store so I can have it at home, too!

We had a 50th anniversary party here for my parents on a busy Saturday night. Everyone ordered off the menu and the food was delivered so quick were all surprised. Everything was great and I was shocked at how little it cost. My personal favorite is the spaghetti parm. My kids liked the food and they could each pick their own pasta and sauce. Everyone gets their own 'bib' instead of a napkin so we all look strange together. The menu was painted on the wall years ago but now they have a regular paper version. Great photos of local celebrities in the waiting area. It can be crowded but it moves pretty quick.

Well worth the visit!

Chef's is special to me, it's about the atmosphere and memories and great food. Their food is unique, which is what I love. They don't cater to a huge spread of palates like chains like Olive Garden do, but any true food lover knows that the smaller, unique, and family-operated restaurants far supersede all else. I live in Arizona and I can't wait until I'm back in Buffalo to eat here again. People who appreciate good dining know Chef's is good. There's just no comparison in WNY. Chef's remains to be one of the busiest dining establishments in the area, and regardless what a few online critiques might say (see above), there is a reason for that. In fact good food is not the only thing that WNY has plenty of, there are also lots of naysayers (hence i now live in AZ). Check it out if you are interested in a new experience, but don't bother holding up a table from other people if you really would rather eat at an Olive Garden or are fussy...

Pros: Friendly Service, Good food

Cons: Busy (always reserve), The food is better when not packed (try off times/nights)

.

I have always heard wonderful things about Chef's so we tried it and they must be doing soemthing right because it took a while to get in the place as it was so very crowded. However I don't understand why...Everything is a la carte and not very good for the overly high prices. I haven't gone back.

After so many rave reviews and recommendations (including being voted best Italian in buffalo) a friend and myself decided to go to chef's. What a disappointment. This restaurant should more clearly label itself Italian American, none of the dishes are authentic or imaginative, as aforementioned the sauce is nothing special and comparable to ragu or prego, the pasta is garbage, and desserts were the only palateable items on the menu. If your idea of Italian is Macaroni and cheese then this is the place for you. If you know and have savored authentic italian cuisine this restaurant is nothing but a huge culinary disappointment.

Chef's is probably the best Italian restaurant in Buffalo. When I go, I almost always get the Spaghetti Parmesan with meatballs, and it is always great. The sauce that they make there is delicious, and you can even buy jars of it. The only con is that it is often difficult to get a table without a reservation.

PROS: great pasta
CONS: hard to get a table without reservation

If you enjoy home made red sauce, You will love chefs. The spag parmasian is the house favorite and mine also. Lunch time is the busiest at this little eatery but the wait is worth it.

The spaghetti was way overcooked, the sauce was worse than some store bought brands.

How people think this is good Italian food, I don't know. Coming from an Italian, people who are enjoying this food obviously grew up eating Prego out of the jar. Quite possible the worst restaurant in Buffalo.

Very disappointing considering this restaurant's reputation. The sauce is no better than Ragu's - bland, tasteless. Where are the fresh ingredients? Garlic? Oil? Oregano?

This place is still over rated, when a group of us went there one Sat. afternoon before going on the Miss Niagara cruise, none of us weempressed. I make better spaghetti then they do using Prego spaghetti sauce. And if I can do that, it doesn't say much for Chef's, does it?
