The place was packed for dinner on a Friday night. We shared the Pig Out and an appetizer of onion rings. The meat was dried out and the onion ring salty. Even though it was crowded, service was brisk. We did have to wait a bit to catch

I used to frequent Virgil's often during the mid-late 90's -- it was a favorite pre-theater dinner destination. The food was delicious, affordable, courteous & efficient waiters -- you could throw a dart at the menu and not go wrong.

Fast forward a few years and the place is a tourist trap, complete with skyrocketed prices, lazy & ignorant waiters, and the food? Every recipe was revamped to taste like fast food crap. The ribs were not the original recipes. They were low-quality "meat" covered in jarred garbage sauce. Between the crap food and what must have been a gas leak, my friends and I got sick while we were there. When we told the waiter we couldn't breathe, that there had to be a ventilation problem or gas leak, we got a blank look and asked if we wanted our garbage to go.

Needless to say, an NYC barbecue legend has gone down the crapper -- where its food belongs.

Yum, yum!!! Went here for a group lunch with some coworkers and enjoyed this restaurant thoroughly. Great service and BBQ, and generous portions. I had the pulled chicken entree with Georgia pecan rice, Collard greens and corn muffins. The food is rich, and they are not shy with their gratuitous use of butter.

Stopped by today for my third or fourth visit in as many years. The food has never disappointed. Portion size leaves a bit to be desired, and the prices are somewhat high (but typical for New York).
Waiter was nice but didn't spend much time at the table, just doing the minimum needed although it was relatively slow during my mid-afternoon meal. Still, he got the job done.
Overall a very good visit.

While the food was very good & the ambiance was nice the service was lacking. Not very attentive, never smiling & a bit cold. It was a birthday dinner & our server was unfortunately not "connected" to our celebration,

The best and most authentic southern quisine I have ever had north of the Mason Dixon line. I recomend the biscuits and gravy appetizer and pulled carolina pork sandwich. You'll think you died and went to heaven! The cornbread and collard greens are delicious. As far as cocktails, try the frozen peach bellini, Outrageos! The margeritas are also outstanding. You won't find better food than here!!!!!

My boyfriend and I are constantly eating at BBQ places everywhere we go and no one has beat out Virgils yet. We have even been down south and eaten the ribs there, where supposedly BBQ is the best, and we still found that Virgils has them beaten. Now as far as other people saying its crowded and you have to wait long, well this is what happens when your a popular restaurant. They do take reservations and that is the only way you get seated faster. Also, there are a variety of ways to eat ribs, the most popular are dry or wet rubbed. Virgils likes to serve dry rubbed ribs but they do have sauces to slather on if you like them wet. They have never disappointed me or my friends that i take there. So in conclusion, if you want to eat ribs at a chain restaurant like Dallas, by all means go ahead. But that only means you don't know what true BBQ is supposed to taste like.

p.s. it doesn't hurt that their beer selection beats out probably any restaurant in NYC

As a lifelong NYer I try to avoid the Times Square area on a Saturday night, but sometimes you have to do what the group wants. Any how Virgil's is by no means bad and if you are someone who really must have dry-rub BBQ you might still consider. I went with a party of 5 there was about a 45 minute wait which was within the expectations of time and area (although we called earlier and they said they were no longer taking reservations which was irritating). The service was mostly good, although our waiter seemed to disappear when we were trying to get the check. The BBQ was on the dry side. I understand they do a dry rub but pulled pork and ribs should still be moist. Not terrible not worthy of being sent back but definitely not up to par. Then when you combine the fact that the prices are high for what you get it was a mild dissapointment. I would definitely recommend Dallas's as a much better value (but does lack on atmosphere) or if you have the chance visit RUB further downtown (on 23rd if you can get in the place is on the small side). I would give it 2.5 stars but since only whole stars are possible I rounded down because I felt this was slightly below average.

Pros: Mid-town location

Cons: over priced

I've been to Virgils now a couple of times and am not impressed. The salad was just OK, and the Chicken wasn't worth the price. Ribs are good. I felt that the crowd was very touristy and loud. I've eaten alot of BBQ and I would say Dallas BBQ and Jimmy's are as good if not better (and everyone should try Dinosaur). I must say the drinks are delicious and good sized.

My Husband & I were cold & drenched looking for coffee & dessert when suddenly this fantastic smell of tangy BBQ sauce went wafting by......I needed to find the source of that delightful smell! So we found it: Virgil's. My Husband was concerned, because we were going to a BBQ place, and I'm a vegetarian, but I can always find something to suit my fancy. Upon entering, there was no wait, although it was VERY busy, and on a dismal Sunday night as well. The hostesses were extremely friendly, and showed us to our table.
The atmosohere was comfy & welcoming. The menu had alot to choose from. My husband chose a spicy chicken sandwich, and I chose a sandwich that was called a "Brisket" (Yes, I know that is meat) but the description said it was grilled cheese on rye with fried onions. Next to that was a grilled veggie sandwich that explained that was grilled veggies & mustard vinagrette. So I thought even though the name was questionable, the description says it all. SO......we recieved our food, and sure enough, mine contained meat. I explained to the waitress that the description was confusing? And she was confused as well, but very gracious in taking it back and having them grill me up a new one, sans meat.
My Husband loved his sandwich, and mine was kick a$$ especially when I dipped it in the Virgil's mild BBQ sauce! We ordered the peanut butter pie (to die for!) and the Key Lime pie for dessert, they were both phenomenal. I topped it off with a tasty hot chocolate to get nice & warm to brave the elements, and off we went. I would totally reccomend this place, although my Husband said the men's room was absolutely nasty, but maybe just save that experience for thr end (lol) The staff, food, music & atmosophere was terriffic! :) We had also eaten at Bubba Gump's for lunch, and that was equally wonderful!

Heard great things about the restaurant and decided to give it a try with my friend. We ordered - the pork ribs were very flavorful and the schrimps were cooked perfectly and practically melted in my mouth. It was on the pricey side but the presentation and taste were well worth it.Overall, it was a great experience the only thing that was lacking was the presentation by our wait staff.

Ate here for lunch on a Sunday and was immediately seated. I ordered a 2 meet plate (ribs and pulled pork) with mac and cheese and collard greens and my wife ordered the Brisket with roasted veggies and mac and cheese.

THe rib were extremely good. Best i have had in NYC. Unlike most places they were served dry and were cooked perfectly, meet still firm but not jerky like (aka blue smoke). The pulled pork was ok, it wasn't drenched is sauce like most places do it but it didn't have much flavor.. The sides were excellent, the mac and cheese is probably the best I've had period and the collard greens were well balances (most places have it too vingerery or too smokey)

My wife's brisket was ok to thinly sliced for my taste. the roasted vegetables must have been good since i couldn't get a sample of it.

The only reason i gave this 4 start is the price. It is very pricey and while you get a lot of food for the price it still doesn't justify the high price. However it is cheaper than many other note able BBQ places in the city so i guess I'm expecting too much price wise. BBQ in NYC just costs a lot period.

It's hard to find good bbq in the city and Virgils really hits the spot! They know how to make some delicious meat. The pulled pork and brisket is the best I've had. The ribs could be better though, that's why I'm taking a star away. Ribs are a crucial part of a bbq joint. While the ribs here were nice and smokey, they really could use a little more flavor. If you're in the mood for a nice heavy meal, I'd definitely recommend this place!

Went to Virgils the other night to meet up with a friend after work, and all I can say is WOW!! We shared a HUGE plate of Hush puppies with maple butter- I could have eaten the whole plate, but since there were so many, and more food for me to try, I took some to go.

I had the pulled pork platter which came with 2 sides. I got the greens and the mac and cheese- again- wow!! I do love me some pulled pork and this was nice and moist and not fatty at all. My friend had the Brisket which she loved and took her leftovers to work today and said they were still good.

I highly recomend Virgil's- so good. And for being in the middle of times square- the prices are reasonalble. The service was a little slow- and that is the only bad thing I have to say about the place.

We had read about Virgil's in many books and couldn't wait to try it. We were seated promptly. After I used a plunger in the bathroom to stop an overflowing toilet, we ordered ribs and pulled pork. We were both disappointed in the ribs which were dry, fatty, and overcooked. The pulled pork was slightly better. The potato salad tasted liked it had hot sauce in it. Neither of us cared for the cole slaw. The best thing was their corn bread, and I don't usually like corn bread! I would rate this restaurant as mediocre and not advise anyone to choose it.

Two words--TRAINWRECK FRIES! They are so amazingly delicious that my best friend and I had to make it something we only eat before Memorial Day and Labor Day. The BBQ is not as good as other places, but with fries like that...who needs smoked meat?

My number one love in life is a good bbq joint. When my boyfriend suggested we have dinner at Virgils when we were leaving Madame Tousseaus last weekend, I was more than excited to check it out. It was after 11pm, and the place was crowded which was a drag....but lets get down to the food. The appetizers were delicious, we ordered hush puppies (which comes with a cinnamon butter that melts right into them) and the plate provided a generous proportion, leaving us with leftover hush puppies for two days. For dinner,
I ordered the brisket (my heart belongs to brisket!) and the lamb. I am not sure what kind of sauce they use, or how it is smoked, but it's incredible. The taste was so unique, with hints of sweetness spices that were out of this world. The meat was tender, fell apart in my mouth. We were too full for dessert (bummer) so we had coffee and were on our way. Also to mention, whoever our waitress was, she was really sweet and helpful.

If you went once and were not impressed, try it again. I am awfully picky about my bbq joints...

I started going here 3 years ago, and stopped last summer. The meat kept getting fattier, the drinks weaker, and the prices are absurd for bbq. i don't think the meat is smoked as real bbq is supposed to be. i had dinosaur bbq on my list for a long time... places to try, but didn't because of the location. The distance is worth it, especially since I don't have to go into tourist hell and pay tourist prices! sorry virgils, i was loyal for 2 1/2 years but your service and food went downhill too far to get back up.

My husband and I went to Virgil's for Thanksgiving dinner. We had never had Thanksgiving dinner BBQ style but were pleasantly pleased. The turkey was very good and the portions were big enough that I had leftovers. I would love to go back someday and try the ribs. We recommend Virgil's BBQ.

Great food and service to go along with it. We went when there wasn't a wait (10pm), after a show. The server was very nice and attentive and we didn't have to wait at all. The BBQ is one of the best I've had.

Pros: Service, Ambiance was all good

great atmosphere, good meat, great variety on the menu. busy and kind of loud, but not too bad for a times square restaurant. i love a restaurant that offers cheese grits as a side dish.

Very old meat. Was cooked days before I was served. The portions were small. The baked beans were old and dry.

Pros: excellent margaritas, clean bathroom, good waiter

Cons: old ribs and sausage, small portions

I would have to agree with the past reviews of Virgils, the BBQ is just average, and considering the price i wouldn't advise going here. I had to wait 10 min for my waiter to come and take my order, the food came literally in 2 min, even before my drink. The waiter never returned and had to ask another slower waitress for the bill. The pulled pork and chicken were good, and ask for fries instead of the minature portion of potatoe salad, for more value. But again, i think there are numerous better BBQ restaurantes and places in the times square area.

Pros: Cant really think of anything

Cons: Food, service and price

As long as the tourists are not from down south. The food is just average. It doesn't compare to Daisy Mae's, Blue Smoke, Dinosaur or even Spanky''s on the next block. And its definitely not worth navigating Times Square to get to it.

Pros: Get to see Mid-Westerners Wearing I Love NY Tee-Shirts

Cons: Average BBQ

Real ribs when prepared in the south have the membrane underneath removed as well as the tuffer meat above the joint, neither of which were done at Virgil's. In competition this would have cost valuable points. The meat was tender enough...the dry rub was fine...maybe a touch over powering...not allowing the flavor of the pork and the woods it was cooked over to fully come through.... the sauce on the table was good...it went well with the rub...I liked the spicy sauce best. The biscuits and gravy were to die for! I've always stayed away from sawmill gravy north of the Mason Dixon Line but I've gotta hand it to Virgil's for serving up some of the finest tasting white gravy I've ever had. When I come again to NYC I'll go back and try something other than the ribs.

I am in love with this restuarant! I go here about once a month and every time, I am soooo satisfied! They have the best biscuits, mashed potatoes, and steaks! They also are really helpful if you have an allergy!

Ahhhh... Virgil's. Follow my directions carefully - order the chili cheez fries (yes thats right), the biscuit n gravy, and a house salad (ranch dressing on the side). For entree, the beef brisket with collard greens and/or corn on the cob and/or baked beans and/or mashed potatoes and/or .... oh wait.. i can't continue any more because i'm full just thinking about all this food. My only regret is that my stomach is not 20 times bigger than it is, because the food at virgils is soooo good and tasty that you will just get MAD that you can't fit any more of that tasty goodness in your belly.
yum..
i'm serious about those chili cheez fries. You laugh. But i mean, the fries are perfect with a little skin on them, the chili is some kind of special chili with no beans that is just perfect, and they don't mess around with the cheese - they use Velveeta. they are not getting fancy. They are just getting down and dirty, the way real BBQ should be. ONe time i got a bunch of friends together and invited them to join me at Virgils for dinner. There was about 12 of us and we ordered 3 plates of chili cheez fries for the table as an appetizer. One friend showed up late. He was laughing at us for being so trashy with our cheez fries. Well, that is, until he had the last 3 bites that were left. THEN he proceeded to order chili cheez fries as HIS ENTREE because they were so good and he just had to have more. TRUE STORY!!!
enjoy.

Pros: Fantastic savory satisfying BBQ - professional staff

I moved up from the south for a job and I could not find good BBQ anywhere. This is the closest thing to southern BBQ in the north, but nothing can't beat real southern BBQ. Try the dry rubbed ribs. If you like chopped pork make sure you ask for bread. For some reason this dish did not come with bread. Its just a plate of meat.

We made reservations for a Saturday night at 6:30pm. We arrived at the restaurant at 6:15pm and it was packed. There was a two hour wait for people who did not have reservations. The host told us we had to wait at the bar, but we will definitely be seated at 6:30pm. When 6:30pm comes by our names was called and we were seated.

We were just at Virgil's for a Friday lunch. This was my first visit and I expected the food to be a complete greasefest, but I was mistaken.

We had a very short wait at the bar before our table was available. Our order was taken promptly however it took around 30 minutes for our food to arrive. By this stage it was just gone 1pm and the place was really busy so I guess it's understandable.

I had the Virgil Burger (with Fries). The burger was cooked to perfection, the meat delicious and tender and nothing about it was overly greasy. Combined with the Scorned Woman hot sauce, it made for a real treat. I wasn't too happy with my fries - around 50% of them were badly burnt to the point of being inedible. My colleagues fries were fine - I guess I was just unlucky.

Overall. great BBQ food and I'd definitely return.

You may have to wait to be seated, but it's worth it. Not only are the main dishes exceptional, so are the side dishes, which is rarity with most rib restaurants!

As a Southerner, I can't say that this is particularly good barbecue. That being said, they do serve good drinks, it's a great place for large groups, and it's very conveniently located, especially if you're going to a Broadway show. Overall, slightly above average.

Stay away. Went there on 9/21/06 and we were seated promptly upstairs(not busy). The waiter took our drink orders, sweet iced tea that looked diluted. Ordered the Memphis ribs(very dried out and stale, like they were in the kitchen for a week). BBQ beans(just ok) and pickled beets(I have tasted better just out of a can). My wife ordered the 1/2 BBQ chicken(Very dry and kind of burnt), the beans and the rice/beans(no flavor). The BBQ sauce tasted like a very diluted store brand, it was not thick or rich at all and had no flavor. For $50 this meal was absolutely terrible. I should of complained, but we will "NEVER" go back, and its kind of funny that the best part of the meal were the "HOT" towels given to you at the end. I have eaten "REAL" Southern BBQ in Tenn. and Texas and this doesn't even come close. I read reviews in City Search before going and I learned my lesson, "pay attention" to previous customers and what they have to say. Again, stay away and you will be much better off spending your "HARD EARNED" $$$ elsewhere.

I work off 6th Ave and came here for lunch one day. Not the best BBQ. The hostesses were downright rude, the server wasn't the friendliest, and the food wasn't all that good. My co-worker and I were quite offended actually. I'd never suggest this place... not even to stop in & use the restroom! Check out Spanky's BBQ right behind them. I hear that place is fantastic!

I recently had dinner at Virgils with my husband and daughter. We've been to Virgil's many times and this evening had to be the worst we've ever experienced. Firstly, portions have been cut down (which probably isn't a bad thing). However, our food was ice cold from the pulled pork to the hot (ha ha) chocolate chess pie. I don't want to blame it on high volume, because the restaurant wasn't extra crowded (we were seated in 15 minutes). Service was good. What's going on in the kitchen guys??

Virgils is not southern food at its best, but they do have pretty decent macaroni and cheese and palatable greens. I would not recommend the BBQ, most of my friends who had it for lunch said it was just so-so, nothing to rave about but then nothing real negative to say about it either.

Virgils is fine but it's authentic only to New Yorkers--and that's not a bad thing. Having grown up with a Southern Grandpa, I know what good, southern food should taste like--this is close but A) It's not as good and B) It's a heafty price to pay for some BBQ, slaw and Hush Puppies.

Virgil's was recommended to me by a Manhattan local. It's casual BBQ and they take reservations! The Front Desk and wait service are polite, kind, and patient. The whole atmosphere is very welcoming and they do a good job accomodating people without reservations. There are a lot of good tables, I recommend dining upstairs if you can. Menu is big with many interesting choices. Biscuits and gravy, pulled pork, crab po'boy, popcorn shrimp are all winners. The towels instead of napkins is a cute, casual touch. I ate at Virgil's twice during my last trip to NY and will be sure to return on every trip in the future.

To start, upon arriving at Virgil's at the hostess stand, the waitstaff was arguing over who would have to wait another table. Not so inviting.

The food itself was mediocre at best, and does not resemble any BBQ I have eaten in the south. The cheese grits particularly were awful - tasted proecessed or old or both.

Serivce was so-so. The waiter could have come by once or twice to see if we needed another drink. Oh, and if you want water, you may have to ask several times for it.

Overall, don't waste your time, money or calories.

I only had lunch there because my coworker works around Times Square. I live in the city and usually never eat at or around Times Square. So we ate there because we had to. I cannot understand why would anyone give this restaurant a good review for its food? Best BBQ in the city? I didn't know pork ribs could taste so bad. I am sorry: not recommended.
