The level of expertise that the mechanics here are showing is beyond expectations. I love them and would recommend them to anyone.

The service extended well beyond free installation of the inexpensive part that I purchased. Andrew even corrected parts that were unrelated to my purchase.
I recommend this shop for its wide selection of parts and delightful service.

I called ahead of time to see if they had this bike I have been wanting and the man had said they did but when I came in they didn't have the bike I wanted and instead was pushing me to buy another type of bike that I didn't want. They did

Sid's just sucks, that's all. I took my new bike to them for repairs (bent derailleur hanger). They bent it back the wrong way, told be that I needed parts that I Iater found out I didn't need and then tried to charge me for shipping when I tried to return the parts that, get this, didn't even fit! I staff was arrogant and unknowledgeable. Mechanics unexperienced. I had similar experiences at both locations. Weird because Campagnolo recommended them. Ha! All bike shops in New York are expensive but these two locations are really bad. I kid you not. Tips? Go elsewhere like bikeworks.

I took two bikes in to have new and existing parts installed/exchanged by a fantastic mechanic and great guy named Joe Lawler. He took wonderful care to make sure all work was done meticulously and his communication was fantastic throughout. During several visits, I found the entire staff to be extremely knowledgeable and quite simply, really nice people who are all serious riders! This level of service is rare in NYC and I highly recommend this shop to riders of any level.

Thank you Sid's!

This place is great because the people who work there actually ride and race. Generally very friendly, huge selection. They can be a bit pricey but their repairs are really well done.

I recently purchased a second hand bike to try commuting to work from Greenpoint to Red Hook. I've been enjoying it so much I am looking to upgrade to a better road bike. A friend recommended Sid's Bike Shop and he said if I went to the East side shop, to ask for Ashley. My boyfriend and I went there on Saturday afternoon and Ashley helped me to pick out my
next bike. I am in love with the Specialized Globe Centrum Sport and will be back in a few weeks to check it out when the 2009 models come in. I wanted to say how awesome Ashley is and how much I appreciated her knowledge of bikes. She helped me in picking out a bike I am very excited about that will suit my needs (and looks super cool too!). I also picked up a new Giro helmet while I was there and a couple bells.
Thank you Ashley! I look forward working with you again when the new Specialized bike comes in.

Cheers,

Ali

I walked in here to get my saddle re-tightened and ended up buying some odds and ends. 4 blocks after leaving i got smashed by a cabbie who mangled my frame and fork, bloodied my leg and basically traumatized me. I limped back and the staff at Sid's helped me clean myself up and calmed me down with some old fashioned humor. They fixed the demented state of my frame and fork and wheel on the spot with a smile. Thanks dudes!

Pros: friendly staff, on the spot service,

Cons: pricier than the typical mom and pop shop

When I was younger I used to work on my own bikes. But now that I have a job and a kid I barely have time to ride, much less work on my bike. I've used a lot of other shops but found them to be sloppy. Sid's mechanics are very thorough. I never worry about the work they do.

I've bought 2 bikes, 1 pair of shoes and some other odds and ends there and I think they're awesome. I could have got some of the stuff cheaper on the web but the service more than made up for it.

And, be sure to check out their fitter. She's GREAT!

The selection is pretty good for NYC and it's not crammed full of merchandise like some other shops.

I've been to a lot of bike shops, and I don't think I've ever found one that really welcomed people with just excellent customer service. After a while, I realised that it's just not how people work who get jobs at bike shops. To expect otherwise is to seek frustration.

That being said, I have found Sids to be extremely helpful, quite fair on prices, speedy as all get out on doing work, and to provide excellent service. I have purchased 3 bikes there. Full disclosure: i bought two custom Independent Fabrications, so I had some cred, but when I came in with a beater BMX bike i thought i could rebuild for my son, they steered me away from it. they could have made $$$ on labor costs, but wanted to do the right thing. So, i bought a new bike for my son from them. They were fair to me, and I repaid that as it was the right thing to do.

I would go back. They've been great.

This place couldn't care less about service or their lack of it. There are too many other good bike stores in NYC to waste your time or money at this one.

I went in the other day to buy a computer and was treated like I was an idiot because I didn't know the first thing about them. I guess that's what they consider good customer service....that's what I consider an a-hole.

Pros: Large selection

I rode my bike to work last week and forgot to bring my chain and lock. Since my work is right next to sid's where i have bought over 300 dollars worth of gear in only the last month, I thought I could tell them my dillema and ask if I could keep my bike there for the day since i had nowhere else to take it and no way of locking it up. Well, the cliche bike dude #1 sort of guffawed under his breath and goes to his boss, "Tell him we SELL locks and chains..."

Then the boss looks at me and goes (in a big BIKE shop, mind you), "Sorry, we don't have any space for your bike here."

For real. That story is 100 percent true. If you can buy your stuff ANY PLACE else, please do.

Cons: greedy, unhelpful, not-so-smart

i bought a road bike there and the carbon forks fractured after 6 months.

The staff could not have been more unhelpful from telling me the forks were no longer made for the bike to not calling the manufacturer after promising to do so. After many visists it turned out the manufacturer refused to honor the warranty and the shop charged full price for all labour and parts.

The crazy thing was i was about to buy another bike there. After the attitude of the staff - no more.

I live in the Kips Bay area so this bike shop used to be a regular place for me to buy components. In fact I bought a helmet here last summer. Today I went in with my bike to ask if I could borrow a tool chain link remover on the spot to replace a chain that I brought with me, but I was told the tool was not for borrowing, only selling. I have one already but it's in storage. Why would they want me to buy another one just to make a small profit? For a repeat customer no less. Where's the grace? Where's the community? Too bad they nickel and dime you. Maybe the cashier is new? I guess the friendliness of the staff has deteriorated in just the past year. Won't be coming back here. Ever.

These guys are great. They carry a great selection of bikes, and they know what they're talking about. I bought a Cannondale road bike from them. My friends told me to see them after I went aroung town to other shops. I was upgrading a 10 year old heavy bike. They asked me lots of questions about the kind of riding I wanted to do. Then they gave me a few choices to test ride. The Cannondale was the nicest bike I tested. So I bought it. Then they did a fitting session for me. I'm really happy with this shop's professionalism. Highly recommend.

I've had good and bad experiences at Sid's. Chris is great, and the dude who built my back wheel did an awesome job. But on the flip side. It took over a month to get a part ordered summer 2005. I came in for something fairly small, mounting hardware for my rear shock. Someone dropped the ball for 2 weeks straight. Not only that, they weren't truthful with me. They kept telling me everything was fine, but they still hadn't even called into the manufacturer to get the part ordered. Now this time (fall 2006), I bring in my bike on a Friday (and they weren't very busy at all), and I asked to have a part sent back to the manufacturer for a warranty repair. It's now Tuesday, and I was just told that the part won't go out until at least tomorrow. I don't understand that. It doesn't take 5 days to remove and ship a derailer. I have to say, I'm losing my patience, and despite the fact they do good work, they need to work on their service. It's quite poor. Believe it or not, Metro Bicycles is more on the ball when it comes to service, and having parts shipped and received.

I went to this shop to get my first road bike. After trying various bikes out from listings on Craig's List I decided I really wanted a Bianchi bike. When I went I met Delissa at Sid's she helped me out anyway she could. That was definitely not the case at most of the shops I went to. Although they didn't have the model I wanted in stock they would be more than happy to order one for me. That's typical. What wasn't typical was that they have an apparatus that helps decide exactly what size you should be so although I didn't have the bike to try out we could still pin point the size. And I have to say after all the shops I went to they had a larger selection than most. When we realized I should really be a 59cm instead of a 57cm she told me she had last year's version of a model that has better components and a nicer frame. I tried it and loved it. No pressure too, she gave a few days to think it over and wahat not. After I decided to get it she used a few methods to size it correctly for me. I left really happy and road it all the way home.

While visiting the city we noticed that biking is the easiest way to get around fast. With that in mind we decided to rent a couple of bikes. They were quick, resonable with their prices, and even gave us a map. We toured the better part of the city on these bikes. They were also pretty nice for rental bikes, not too beat up.
