I've been going to Cafecito for a couple of years now. There have been a few issues now and then: a person answering the phone for take out orders that didn't speak one lick of English, food arriving cold (I live 10 blocks away).

Well I have been to Cafecito's since it opened up. I actually thought it was great to open up a cuban spot in the east village being that I am latin and grew up here my whole life. I made friends with Staff I might say really quick because I love drinks and eating great latin food, and I thought highly of Owners/ Manager/ staff. At first I noticed that they enjoyed my presence and appreciated that I also brought them so much business. I actually sent all my local friends and even strangers and always highly recommended thier establishment. cafecito's staff treated me with respect as to an occasional free drink, or an appetizer not that I didnt have the money but out of thankfullness through my loyalty to them. But I started to notice that once they became very successful they no longer treated me VIP but rather more like who are you ...It was very noticeable and others like myself noticed as well. But I still gave them a visit and ordered thier meals through delivery and had occasional drinks at the bar. If I was too loud at the bar they actually would remove me and my guest friend. I also was insulted by one of the owners as to which kitchen staff cook would be my choice when they all knew I was in a relationship for numerous years. Well to make a long story short last St. Patricks became a nightmare because someone dear to me was violently assaulted in the clear view of Cafecito Owner who admits he seen what happened. So my thing is that all these years of my loyalty to these Clowns have proven that I totally lost all respect for each one of them. When I arrived in front of Cafecito, there was my loved one being put on a stretcher and the results were pretty horrific. He underwent oral surgery, suffered other facial bruises and had a slash cut on head. As I approached the scene being that I live by cafecito I got no answers. Not one manager or owner was out in front to see that victim of a violent act was taken properly to hospital.Instead they were all more concerned about making thier business go on as if nothing had happened in front of Cafecitos. I had actually spoken to one of owners through my friend who was assaulted at around nine pm and ten min after he suffered the violent crime..Clearly I got a clear message that they dont care about the people that have been loyal to them but are greedy self centered businessman. I will never step foot into thier establisment Cafecito's or Royale because after seven years they are full of Sh_ _.... If I want a good cuban meal there are about all over the city and authentic cuban meals...My final message to all that enjoy Cafecito's just keep your guards up cause the fake smiles are there........Thank You

Pros: Great Churrasco .....

Cons: They do rush you out on a busy night to seat the next .

.

Due to the cramped space and crowds, they barely let you finish and ask you to leave the table! Incredible. Everything about it was average, but tolerable, but the worst were the house rules. They have wierd rules: you can make reservations only for 6 or more, and they expect everyone to arrive together. If some members of the party arrive earlier than rest, they do not allow to sit at the table, unless all arrive!! Stay away on busy weekend nights or be prepared to eat slow-cooked food at fast-food pace! We went this Saturday night, and faced the brunt of all those rules. Will not go back again.

Friday would not be Friday without a great meal at Cafecito. The pollo, the salad with shrimp. Fantastic. We love the staff, too. Our grandson is also a very big fan!

Been coming here for ages. Great for dates or dinner with friends. Food is not too expensive, service is always solid. Good tequila selection! Cuban music is present, but you won't have any trouble hearing each other.

I came here with a friend yesterday ( Sat. night). The ambiance is very nice. The mango margarita was good but too small and too pricey. They need to make them bigger if they want to charge 11.00. I ate the churasco I must say that it was delicious. My friend ate vaca frita that was also great. I have tasted better Cuban food. I don't think I will be visiting again. The bar tender was friendly. The place wasn't bad, but it' wouldn't be on my top three choices. I would recommend the food but not the drinks. That margarita was more like a shot with a lot of ice in a small cup. That really disappointed me. Three tiny margarita's later and no buzzzz. Go for brunch and drink somewhere else....

I have never eaten here but my friend suggested it so we placed an order for delivery. Since it's not especially cheap, I expected something good. My pork chunks came a small handful of vegetables bits (greasy corn, tiny potato bits) but with no rice and beans which I found a little outrageous. My friend's steak was a bland, cheap cut of meat that came with some garlic salad dressing on the side which totally overwhelmed once added; at least his came with rice and beans! The onions were tasty though and so were the black beans. I do not know what it's like to eat-in, but this is not a place to order from: for $30 we ended up feeling pretty disappointed.

Pros: Cuban Food, Ambiance, Service

Cons: None

This place has the best, most authentic Cuban food in this city bar none and at very good prices. The cuban hamburger sliders are really great as well as the empanadas and croquettes. For mains I recommend the ropa vieja or the fried breaded steak.

I've been to cafecito many times, and the food has always ranged from decent to very good. The food, however, is not traditional Cuban food--as a Cuban, I would consider it to be generic "Latin food." And it is generally a good value. However, like other users of this site, I have found the service to be occasionally poor and the management to be downright rude. The one manager I've seen time and time again hasn't accommodated any of our party's special requests. The last time we went was absolutely horrifying... I brought my parents to the restaurant for a birthday dinner. I was required to sign up for the pre-fixe ($27) to get a reservation, given that we were 6. That alone seems strange--who requires a pre-fixe for a reservation of six? Anyway, the manager had told me that dessert would be included in the meal, but when it came time for dessert, he claimed that it wasn't. This left me wondering why the pre-fixe was $27, given that the dishes (entree and appetizer) ordered a la carte would have been about $15 total. I explained politely that I must have misheard him, and that I probably wouldn't have come given that this made the pre-fixe relatively expensive. He wouldn't budge, and seemed extraordinarily angry. A member of our party was near tears arguing with him. It required a member of our party to get up and speak to the manager for 20 minutes before he relented . For these reasons, I can't really recommend this place for a special occasion. I would only recommend this place to a friend with strong reservations.

I have been here a handful of times and each time has been a great experience. The food is great and for a reasonable price. The only set back is that it's so tiny and cramped - but it's worth it. If it was any bigger, I think it would take away from the experience.

After being to Cafecito numerous times I finally recommended it one Friday night to my friend for some delicious Cuban food and drinks. We began with double mango margaritas, with a waitress who was eager and willing to please, but a few minutes later our mood was quickly dampened when the mgr came out to question our order. This seemed odd, because he had asked us as if we were sure about what we wanted; in fact he said the following to us in a chiding manner: ?Those are two drinks each?? to which we replied: ?Yeah, that?s what we asked for.? As knowledgeable customers we were well aware of the orders we placed and the difference between a single and double drink.
Our drinks arrived in a timely fashion and moments later my friend had taken two sips and accidentally spilled her drink. The contents of her glass had gone everywhere, from on her bag to the utensils. I quickly and apologetically approached the mgr, MANNY politely asking him for a rag so we could clean up the spill. He came over and moved us over to a dry table, however, he took everything that was wet and moved it as well - from utensils to wet glasses, not to mention her drink which was less than a quarter full! MANNY didn?t even bother to offer a replacement drink. A real, customer friendly restaurant would of gone ahead and gave us a drink on the house.
On top of the drinks, we ordered two entrees which we enjoyed. When we received our check the total was sixty-seven dollars! We examined it closely to see if MANNY charged us for the spilled drink. His ?kindness? went as far as for him to charge us half the price for a new drink on top of the spilled one. When we asked to speak to MANNY, he was not on the premises.
Overall Cafecito has delicious food, but poor service and rude management. Needless to say, this restaurant doesn?t deserve the wonderful reviews it has received.

The food at Cafecito is amazing. Hands down. Especially the tostones. It's an adorable, quaint, airy, cheery spot on lonely Avenue C. My only concern was the service - which wasn't very warm. Our waitress at lunch was a bit cold and not very friendly. It's too bad because the food is great - but service is also an essential part of a restaurant. In a city with as many restaurants as NY - it's just as easy to find another Cuban restaurant with just as good food with a friendly, warm service.

Cafecito is, by far, the best, unpretentious Cuban food in NYC. This place is not good for big groups because the tables are very small and close together, but the food is very tasty, authentically presented and culinarily accurate.

this place is worth coming for the pork sandwich (cubano) alone. after trying one last year, I am obsessed with cafecito's cuban sandwiches and feel the urge to go here whenever I'm in the hood. it's a great neighborhood spot, but service can be maddeningly slow when it gets busy. they also make killer mojitos at the bar.

I live in Miami, which can arguably be called the Cuban food capital of the US, and visit NYC about 3-4 times a year. In between my visits I crave Cafecito's food. Seems silly being a native South Floridian and exposed to Cuban food my entire life that I would crave food that is so easily at my disposal. But there's something about Cafecito that's different. And I'm not the only one that feels this way. All of my friends make Cafecito a definite stop during their NYC trips. But why? The obvious point of distinction is their reasonable prices. But in my eyes, that should be it's the quality of the food that's obvious. It's amazing! My favorites include the Churrasco Steak accompanied with their version of the chimichurri sauce which perfectly blends the olive oil and parsley so there's not one ingredient that's over powering, atop their saffron rice with the side of cinnamon-glazed sweet plantains is hands down my favorite meal of all time. I also enjoy their ceviche tremendously. The flavors explode in your mouth and it's a very refreshing treat after a day of shopping. My review would not be complete if I didn't mention the Cuban Sandwich. Oh my gosh! The combination of fresh quality meat on that oh so crisp freshly pressed Cuban bread is perfect. If you haven't visited Cafecito yet, make sure to do so, you don't know what you're missing.

Having grown up on Cuban food in the Union City area of NJ (a/k/a the Hialeah of the Northeast), I was always disappointed when I went out for Cuban food in New York. The small portions of not great-tasting food were always overpriced. So even after reading a great review in the New York Times, I was sure Cafecito would disappoint as well. Not the case! I went there on a date about three years ago, and although things didnt work out with the dude, it definitely worked out with Cafecito. The staff is always warm and welcoming. The food is perfectauthentic and savory, good portion size, and the prices cant be beat. The ambience is great for all occasions. And the drinks are always just right, too. It's true that sometimes you have to wait a bit for a table, but if you're in a hurry try going during off-peak hours. Go there with friends, colleagues, alone or with your mom. Just go. Youll like it.

Invited friends for great food, especially cuban burgers and great mojitos. Had an expected 45 min wait @7:30 pm on a Saturday, not 2bad. Meantime ordered appetizers which took forever, second appetizer came right b4 being seated! But food was extraordinary as usual. What really bothered us, was the hosts pressure to spend $20 min. I never heard of that policy. Shouldve told us before we spent money at bar. We had minors who wouldnt spent that much (prices are low). Figured hed consider what we spent at the bar, but nope.we werent even offered dessert b4 he came over to say we spent too littleannoying and embarrassing! Noone else was being reminded of this and my friends are pretty good spenders so we were offended. Doubt Ill be taking any local or international visitors there any time soon, Id hate to go thru this again!

Cafecito is a cozy, warm environment and I have to say the drinks were very good but....I went there recently on a Friday evening with two friends and we were told a table would be ready for us within 5 minutes. About 30 minutes later, a table did open up, however the maitre 'd gave our table away to another party claiming they had been there longer (they hadn't). About 45 min later we were finally seated. If it wasn't so cold out, we would have left and gone somewhere else. The food was about average, and we will probably not return to this place.

Cafecito is an excellent little jem in the east village. From the atmosphere to the food - you will be amazed. Although, I was a bit disappointed with the service on a few occasions (our order was mixed up with another table who had ordered the same meal, but arrived twenty minutes after we did!!!) And sometimes you do feel as though you are being rushed with the wait staff hovering over you to take your plate, but I guess that's how it is when seating is very limited in such a small restaurant. However, the food was absolutely delicious! You must try the Frita cubana con yuca fritas which is 4 mini hamburgers with garlic sauce and ketchup for the fries. They also make an excellent cuban sandwhich. One of the best!

Cafecito is a relatively undiscovered Cuban restaurant that offers great food in a warm and friendly setting. Although a bit out of the way on Avenue C it is well worth the trip. The fried plantains are a ridiculous bargain and dangerously good. The food has never disappointed and the portion sizes are enormous so it is reasonable to split. Cafecito is a great place to get together with a few friends for a low key night. The noise level can get high (likely attributed to their potent sangria) so I wouldnt go on a Friday or Saturday night if you want something quiet. It is worth noting that one or many can consume ridiculous amounts of alcohol while spending relatively little. No one I know has ever left hungry or sober for that matter. Overall this is one of the best secrets out there and a great value.

Know before you go: Cafecito only takes reservations for parties of 6 or more. We went on a Tuesday after work, it was not crowded at all. Very friendly and knowledgeable waitstaff. We ordered three of the appetizers which were incredible - Black Bean and Corn fritters, Shrimp fritters, and sea bass ceviche along with an extra order of tostones and maduros. The sangria was not bad overall - very large pitcher. We all ordered the churassco flank steak with the chimmichurri sauce and pickled onions. Wow! I have never tasted anything so good. Great mojitos and cafe con leche mixed drinks. We ordered the flourless chocolate cake which was just so-so. Overall, excellent value, excellent food. Nice atmosphere. The place was completely filled by the time we left. Would definitely come back again.

cafecito only accepts reservation for 6 or more. Even w/ a reservation (8 PM, Friday night) my friends and I waited for about 30 minutes. Food is good, portions are decent but getting our food took a little while. Our waitress was friendly and our water glasses were never empty. Price as very reasonable, a meal for 5 plus drinks was under $200 including gratuity.

Con: Be ready to sit very closely to your neighbors, as the dining area is very narrow and small.

It was good and the food had a lot of flavor like real cuban food is.
The restaurant is small but if you go after 1pm for lunch then you find space for a relaxing lunch.

I freakin' love this place and I swear it's not the sangria talking. When you walk through the door of this quaint little place not only are the owners and staff super friendly but so are the people who go there. The food- "que rico!" Try the Cuban sandwich with extra garlic sauce or Camarones Al Ajillo or for bruch The Three-eyed Manny is phenomenal. I have had virtually every item on the menu including weekend brunch and I love it all-really it's that good!!! The down side, I am usually so stuffed that I don't want to leave. So, the long trek home is on foot just to help digest. See you there!!!

Our first visit to this little jewel of a find in the East Village was so nice . "The Cuban Cafe", under the blue awning true ethnic food only better, all ingredients are fresh and the grilling just right. The Bollos appetizer, this deliciouss black bean, roasted corn fritter w/a tsty dipping sauce and the Mahi Mahi was grilled just right. The waitstaff seemed to handle the service well. Good beats, nice people, price is right nice to see all the honeys and you can sit outside at the lunch counter, have a mojito or two, eat good food and feel like you are somewher in Key West 50 yrs ago. This place has to be experienced its that cool. The wait for a table can be long, but its worth it.

Starving on a cold Saturday night some friends and I stumbled across a little Cuban restaurant in the East Village called "Cafecito". It was packed with a hour wait time. Although we opted to leave, the vibrent atmosphere and the friendly staff intrigued us. One of the managers offered us a seat at the bar to wait for a table, there we had the most amazing empanadas and red sangria. When we got our table, I was a bit tight but what space they lack Cafecito makes up for with their food. Every entree was delicious, I recommend the Vaca Frita or the Chilean Sea Bass, you won't be disappointed!!!!!!!!!!!!

Amazing dishes:

Ropa Vieja: I devour this..the meat is so tender and just...God... I want some now. I needed to stop myself before I started getting obscene.

Vaca Frita : Incredible....! So good... It recently has become my favorite dish, edging slightly above the Ropa Vieja...

All the appetizers! And the Saborcito De Cuba is an amazing deal.
$11 for 9 items...

The sangria -- white or red is one of my favorites in the city. Just eye it when you walk in--and don't order if it is almost empty-- otherwise you get a more juice taste than alcohol.

Their flourless chocolate cake, if you saved enough room for dessert is pretty darn good.

I always leave here really tipsy and satisfied. Yum

Pros: Great Food, Inexpensive, um GREAT FOOD!

Cons: , Small, Gets Crowded

.

Inexpensive, real Miami Cuban food in generous portions. In my 10 years of living in NYC since moving from Miami, I have yet to come across a place with authentic cuban classics that taste as good as places like Versailles, La Carreta, & Puerto Sagua, etc., until this nice find. The prices are right and the menu covers all the main appetizers, soups, main dishes, deserts & beverages you would find at Miami's favorite places, plus taste very good.

Matre d' refused to give my wife and her friend a table for four, even though they insisted that their husbands were parking the car. Soup served luke warm. Main course order was mixed up with another table causing confusion and delay. Drinks were delayed and additional drinks that we did not order were brought. Rice was dry and tasteless. Check was presented as a total, not itemized. We sent it back and when itemized check arrived it was a lesser amount--the first check was overcharging us! Food not worth the hassle.

Eschperschmanto. This spot is so incredibly sweet--and the food! It's one thing if a restaurant serves delicious fare, but when it serves such generous portions as well! I had a great time here. I went in the winter and the ambience was fabulous: cozy and warm. I can't wait to go back when the weather warms up--sit outside, have a perfect sangria. If you like good Cuban food and you like an intimate atmosphere and you like to have a dining experience that leaves you feeling good about life... yes, you should visit Cafecito.

If you're looking for a friendly place with great food, generous portions, and affordable dining, look no further than Cafecito. Everything works at this charming down-to-earth favorite of neighborhood locals. It's no wonder the owners had to expand the space. You'd be hard-pressed to find such scrumptious Cuban cuisine for such modest prices anywhere else in the city. The inventive menu delights tastebuds with just the right amount of flavor and authenticity. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu (everyone in our party of five thought their entree was the best), but the assorted appetizers is a great way to get started. The place seems to be getting busier with each subsequent visit. Hurry up and enjoy before the best-kept secret on Avenue C gets out completely and the lines start overflowing.

A group of us tried to get in the super trendy and super crowded Esperanto down the street (one hour wait). I recommended we try Cafecito, never gone there before.
Well, it was well worth it! Excellent sangria, friendly waitstaff, and the food - awesome. Much better than I expected. Simple no nonsense dishes - but the flavor and taste - wow! Couldn't believe it. Every single person at the table was happy with every dish. And the price - we couldn't believe how inexpensive it was for the large portions. I will definetly be going there again. So if you can't get into Esperanto, walk up C to Cafecito - you will not be disappointed.

For the homesick or nostalgic who crave a true Cuban meal (meaning rather non-spicy dishes, heavy carbs, lots of meat and a touch of sweets) combined with hard to find cuban beers, sodas, and killer sandwhiches- it's just enough to pacify the soul, but not enough to transport you back to Cuba.

Well priced at around $6 for sandwhich and $10 entrees. Large portions like your mother would make you with just enough fat to make it tasty but not too greasy.

*Food:Just about anything on the menu, however the sandwhiches are most popular and recommended.

*Drinks: Thick, fresh fruit shakes are delicious, and hard to find Cuban classics in beer and soda are worth the trip.

*Ambience: Busy Diner- complete with wide variety of customers, clanking kitchen and friendly, talkative servers.

What a great experience. I've been there six times. This place is a real dining treat, from the exceptional real Cuban entrees to the personable staff. The red sangria compliments the mouthwatering selection of crispy beef (vaca frita). You can't go wrong stopping by for a cafe con leche and a chicken empanada. The best addition to my neighborhood by far.

Delicious Cuban food, really great value and surprisingly clean... The guys running the place did a fantastic job on the interior, the food is addictive - better than anything you'll get at a chain (the fried plantains are awesome) and the price can't be beat!
