Be Scene at Blue Water Grill Voted 11th Most Popular Restaurant in New York in the 2008 Zagat Survey & applauded as a restaurant that is "perfect for dates" and "never disappoints," Blue Water Grill is a dining destination in the heart of Union Square. Loyal guests and curious visitors are drawn to the former Metropolitan Bank space that features sexy, dimly-lit red chandeliers illuminating the intimate dining room, a spacious people-watching outdoor cafe and a cozy subterranean lounge featuring live jazz music. In the midst of the marble and majestic urban setting, Executive Chef Matthew Hughes' menu highlights a variety of seafood delicacies. From our Sushi Bar to our Oyster Bar, we've got your seafood cravings covered! If late-night isn't your scene, Blue Water Grill also offers up Sunday Brunch-with-a-view overlooking the Union Square Park Farmer's Market featuring Seasonal menus.

Editorial by Citysearch

This Union Square classic is such a well-oiled machine, it can feel a little like dining on an cruise ship, albeit an elegant one. Located in a former bank, the three-floor, heavily marbled space is decorated with red and gold antler-shaped sconces, and is filled to the gills with business diners and tourists. The menu executes so consistently, it's obvious why it hasn't changed much over a decade. Nearly every oceanic region is represented: Plump, clean Pacific Northwest oysters can be topped with classic or Thai mignonette, cocktail sauce or horseradish, while the Red Bull sushi roll--a gorgeous swirl of tuna, yellowtail, cilantro and jalapenos--would stand proud at Nobu.

Key Points

  • Seafood & Sushi
  • Jazz Brunch, Sidewalk Seating
  • Private Parties/Private Room

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Despite an otherwise well-run front of house, half hour waits can accompany reservations.
  2. The Extras - The seafood-wary only have a few options, but a hearty, perfectly cooked filet mignon shouldn't garner any complaints.
  3. The Extras - The downstairs Vault Room seats up to 35, has its own prix fixe menu and is available for private parties or corporate events.
  4. What to Drink - The wine list is long and pricey, and servers may have trouble recommending one of the few bottles in the $40s. That said, a bump up to a $58 bottle of Dobbes Grand Assemblage Cuvee yields a stellar, light bodied red that pairs well with both fish and meats.
  5. Live Music - The Jazz Dining Room features live music--call for schedule.
  6. Where to Sit - The party is in the main room, thanks in part to the hopping bar scene, while the upstairs balcony provides a more sedate experience. Live jazz happens downstairs--ask the reservationist if interested.

BR guests gem

by Elizabeth L. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 5,342

BR Guest restaurants tend to provide all that you are looking for: great food, great service, nice atmosphere, beautiful interior. The wine list is extensive, from reasonable to are you kidding me?! There is a variety of speciality drinks. The dinner menu includes a raw bar, sushi, and a variety of delicious seafood and other entrees. Have to get the 'chopped salad', so many ingredients they can't all be listed on the menu! There is also a jazz room downstairs. But make sure you have reservations, because getting a table as a walk in means a LONG wait.

great fresh menu

by Lisa G. | insider_expert Insider Expert | Rank: 2,457

This restaurant has some great sushi selections. The nightly specials are wonderful. I had a panko ccruster red drum with a light sauce. Not too rich. The crabmeat hash is the best-I could eat that as my meal.

turn the volume down

by salvij1

Other than the very loud atmosphere, the place was fantastic. THE ATLANTIC SALMON MADE MY MOUTH WATER. thumbs up!! brought a date there and she enjoyed herself as well.... the only thing i'd consider changing is the noise level. tune it down a notch. otherwise, food-phenominal. service-very welcoming. decor-beautiful.

best crab cake and Chilean sea bass

by nyclocal25

I went to Blue Water Grill last night, for my husband?s birthday. We had a table in the jazz room. Excellent atmosphere, a little crowded and noisy for my taste, but acceptable considering what it was coming. Their food is AMAZING! Their Chilean sea bass is perfectly prepared. This fabulous tasting white fish is served on a bed of greens drizzled with soy sauce and accompanied by a pyramid of sticky, flavored white rice which gives this delicate and flaky, buttery and mild fish an Asian twist. The crab cake is melting in your mouth. In my opinion, it is the best I?ve had in NYC. The freshly made potato chips are adding a crisp note to the softness of the extremely fresh crab meat. The calamari is served on a bed of cilantro leaves and grated carrots, drizzled with a perfectly matching sauce. The music is fine and completes the atmosphere. What I didn?t like was the hostess?s sour face and the waiter?s service. In the end, the complimentary champagne drinks were offered to make up for the little unexpected behavior of our server and for the uncomfortable table setting that we were assigned for the evening. A little bit more attention to that would make the place perfect, and who is not thriving for perfection these days?

Pros: food

Cons: sour hostess and rude waiter

favorite place in nyc

by nycmama30s

I've been going to BWG for 10 years now and it's my favorite place in the city. The food is consistently great and service is fast and friendly. I love everything-the oysters, sushi, fish dishes (the sea bass is my absolute favorite), seafood, meat....and, while it is pricey, it's worth it.

Pros: great everything

Cons: none

Simply put.. a great experience.
Friendly staff, great food.
We had oysters and sword fish.
The fish was one of the best I've eaten so far.
Oysters.. cant go wrong with those.. and they do offer 5 or 6 sauces with them.

Pros: great food and service

Cons: none

Noisy. OK food

by LeeLee74

Believe it or not I was actually looking forward to this restaurant, I was expecting a fine dining experience accompanied by excellent sea food. The positives are that the space has a lot of energy and the live music is a nice touch..too loud for my taste but still a bonus. Negatives are that the food is a step up from Red Lobster, the staff is nice but not professional and in general theres just too much going on. Good for a loud fun group with not very discerning tastes.

A letdown

by josie2323

I went to this place because I had always heard it had pretty good food--never raved about, but always consistent. So I wanted to see for myself. In short: this restaurant is a complete letdown. The food was so dull, so unexciting, so unoriginal that I almost fell asleep on my plate. I began with the tuna tartare--which is not only not a tartare--but was small and uninteresting. I then had the tuna suki-something--it was edible, but the sauce was overwhelming and I couldn't taste the tuna. Dessert was equally unipressive-a creme brulee that was so basic I could have gotten it for less at the Coffee Shop across the street. One tasty experience: their calamari appetizer was very good. Otherwise, this restaurant, like many of Steve Hanson's once thriving establishments, is clearly going down the tubes, as more talented chefs rise to make spectacular food in hipper places.

Pros: nice servers, great bread

Cons: dull, expensive food, and a very coroporate aura.

OK food, TERRIBLE service

by lovemyveggies

I visited Blue Water Grill during restaurant week - and I hope the terrible service was due to the place being busy, not that that is really any excuse. Our waitress let us sit at our table a good 10 minutes before taking our drink orders, by which time we were ready to order. Our drinks finally came at the same time as our appetizers, and we never were served bread. Then I had to wait a good 5 minutes to get a spoon for my soup. Our server only returned when our entrees came out, and the runner had to stand there with our food while she cleared our appetizer dishes. At this point she refilled my cocktail glass, which I only took a few sips from, and took away the remainder of my drink - more than half of it! Same thing when dessert came out - our plates were still on the table, because she had never once come to check on how we were doing. The runner dropped off our desserts, and our server disappeared again, without asking if any of us would like coffee (which several of us would have). We sat for about 20 minutes after finishing desert (obviously NOT lingering over coffee) when I saw her come in the front door from her smoke break. At this point we had to flag her down and ask for the check.

All of this could have been a little more forgivable if the food had been amazing - and it wasn't. My entree was advertised to have "heirloom tomatoes" and a "lobster emulsion." It came with huge hunks of bland supermarket reds and a salty vinaigrette - with not a hint of lobster flavor.

Pros: Beautiful space

Cons: Terrible Service

Great jazz, horrible service

by britrane

It was a Thurs night, 7:30. 3 people in the jazz restaurant. Beautiful atmosphere and a great great jazz trio. That was about it though. Terrible service overall, sad to say. We first waited 10 mins to be poured water upon sitting down, then to receive a spoon to eat the soup we ordered. Worst of all, 90 mins after sitting down, we still hadn't received our entrees. Sadly we had comedy club reservations nearby (a full 2 hours after the reservation time) and had to get up and leave the restaurant prior to even receiving our entrees!
It was an embarrassment.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Service

Good food.

by envymeny

Had dinner here one night. Atmosphere was okay, decor was alright, food was good. For appetizers I tried the lobster sliders which was delicious, the crabcakes which was okay. Entree I had their salmon special. It was fresh and ingredients were simple and clean. For dessert I ordered the carrot cake which I did not like. It tasted weird for some reason.

Pros: lobster sliders

Cons: carrot cake dessert

Most reliable

by risiebisi

I find Blue Water Grill to be the most reliable restaurant in NYC. The simply grilled fish is the best and they often have Alaskan halibut on which is not always easy to find. It's also open late, so for last minute post 11PM on week nights it's a sure bet. Although it can get noisy, the general atmosphere is great, especially if you can nab a table on the terrace. Will keep returning for more.

Perfection

by austinowen

My boyfriend chose this surprise restaurant for us to celebrate our one year anniversary and I couldn't have been happier with it. The food was amazing! They also sat us in the sidewalk seating area which was lovely. The waiter brought out two rounds of free champagne and comped our desert!

I must recommend the Lobster Roll for an appetizer and the Soy glazed Sea Bass for dinner. You will NOT be disappointed! Finish it off with some fresh coffee and a scoop of their peanut butter ice cream.

It will be a night I always remember. And we will definitely be doing more of our celebrating at this place!!!

One of the best NYC restaurants that I have visited since arriving last year!

by jerseygirl0122

I just visited Blue Water Grill as a guest and have nothing but beautiful words to say. The atmosphere was great, the wait staff recommended an excellent wine. I was not familiar with any of the wines on the list but the waiter found the perfect bottle. The food was the right portion, well presented and a taste that leaves your palate dying for more. I cannot wait to visit this restaurant again. Highly recommended.

Pros: Price, selection and wait staff...a perfect combination

Cons: I did not recognize any of the wines on the list but the waiter helped with this.

Living on past reputation - service is only getting worse! Staff needs (re-)training

by purplebonbons

My husband & I had my bday dinner last night; we've been here many times before-we're locals, we WERE BRGuest fans, this WAS one of my family's fave restaurants in NYC. BUT the service has gone down during the last 2 years-it's living on its reputation. I wanted the Raw Bar Castle & we gave them one last chance-who wants bad service for her bday?! We figured 8:45PM Sun, not many people, should be OK. We want to think our server is new (Holly M, Server #487) but the others just walked past us & looked at us sitting there either with closed menus (waiting to place our order) or nothing in front us (no bread). We felt like we were invisible & all they could see were the dishes & menus on the table. We just got water, asked for a drink when we ordered, asked for bread & waited 15 mins+ between courses. The runner that brought us our food apologized for bringing us dessert for another table before we got anything! That's when I told him that Castle sitting downstairs on the shelf was ours & we'll take the dessert if that's all we could get. It was frustrating bc by now, 45 minutes went by & I stared at the Castle for 15 minutes! So he went downstairs to get the Castle & had to argue to bring it up to us without a lazy susan. (The ice was melting when we got it!) We didn't mind turning it ourselves-what bothered us was that another table of 2 got there & placed their order 15 minutes after we did, but got their bread & Castle the same time we got ours! There was no apology/excuse from Holly. It would have been better if she'd said anything. She forgot to replace a fork when she took the dirty one; she hid in the waitstation instead of checking on our food; she didn't bring us the bread until we asked. She obviously needs to be trained. I have waitressed before (my degree was in Hospitality Mgmt from Johnson & Wales in RI) so I'm lenient. Ignoring the problem & pretending it's not there is unacceptable. Where was the manager? They need Chef Ramsey to teach them service!

Pros: Location, Seafood/Food, Annually changing menu, Romantic setting

Cons: Service going downhill, Price going uphill, Large group seating

Pros: Excellent dishes! Great Service! Cool Jazz band for dinner!

My Favorite Restaurant in NY

by amybabyamy

Blue Water Grill is by far my favorite restaurant in New York. I'm partial to any BR restaurants, but this one definitely takes 1st place. I've only been once for dinner (because it's pricey), but also for lunch, a handful of times for brunch, and for cocktails. I love seafood and they have such an amazing selection of food and wine. Brunch is phenomenal with tea/coffee and mimosas/bloody mary's included in the price of your entree. The staff is wonderful (as they must be when you are paying that much). Once at Sunday brunch my friend and I ordered champagne, and though we didn't realize it couldn't be served until noon, our waiter arrived with 2 brimming flutes promptly at 12. If you want to do it right, go for dinner and make reservations in the jazz room downstairs. Guaranteed an amazing dining experience.

Pros: Great food, great space, awesome service, lots of wine, jazz room, main room... EVERYTHING

Cons: Expensive, but worth it

Best Seafood in Union Sq.

by 8znqt

If you want good seafood in the city, this is the place to go to. My favorite dish is their mahi mahi and their oyster sampler. Everything was very fresh and beautifully presented. The oysters were large and meaty and it came with a variety of dipping sauces from soy sauce to mariana. The fish was fresh and favorful. The restaurant itself had a romatic theme to it, with its atmosphere illuminated by small table candles and dim light, live jazz music playing in the background and an open eating area. This is definitely my favorite seafood restaurant in they city and its a great place for a date

Pros: Ambience, Great Seafood, Live Music

Cons: A bit on the pricy end..

Good raw bar

by kkat825

The raw bar has a fresh selection of clams and oysters for all palates. I personally like the littlenecks. We had to re-order a second time since we couldn't get enough. I had the chilean sea bass which was flaky and moist. Couldn't tell you what everyone else had. It was a bit difficult with our large group and the orders a bit confused. Hard to get someone to refill our water glasses/drink orders. I think our waiter was new. Overall we'd go back for the seafood but hope for better service.

Pros: Fresh raw bar, good seafood selection

Cons: Slow wait staff

Delicious, Fresh Seafood

by dion101

Stopped by with 6 friends for lunch last week. Despite a crowded rush, we were still seated within 10 minutes to a large table that was comfortable and featured a nice view overlooking Union Square Park. Had an absolutely delicious shrimp and lobster spring roll, followed by a fresh BBQ eel roll. Even though this restaurant is in Manhattan (and nowhere near the Chesapeake Bay), their Maryland crab cake was light and crispy, with just the right spices. I've lived in Baltimore before, and this was at least as good as any of the crab cakes I've ever tried there (with only one notable exception). Overall, my friends and I highly recommend Blue Water Grill.

Pros: Fresh seafood, fast friendly service, and scenic location.

Mediocre food / horrid service and management

by frequentdiner123

I recently dined at Blue Water Grill for lunch. We were one of the first diners entering the restaurant which at the time had about 5 tables filled. I asked for a table by the window. After a consultation, we were seated in the corner near the raw bar. I ordered the fixed price lunch. The carrot-ginger soup with shrimp arrived. While eating the soup, I had a hard time cutting into the shrimp (the only one in the meal) and found that 2/3 of the shell was still on. I showed this to our waiter who did nothing. In fact, no one cleared our soup dishes when the entree arived. We didn't see our waiter again for 20 minutes and I had to ask the manager to see him. In the mean time, we repeatedly asked for water and iced tea refills. Our empty plates remained on our table until we asked for them to be removed. After I spoke with the manager, she sent a complementary dessert, however, we sat there with no silverware and literally no one to flag down to get some. We eventually gave up and left. On the way out I spoke with the restaurant manager, who gave me her business card asking us to re-dine with them at a later date and she woud "take care of us". When I called, she of course remembered us, however "taking care of us" must mean something different to her than to an upset diner. There are some great restaurants in NYC and no one needs to be treated like this.

Pros: Nice space

Cons: everything else - service, management, food, staff

If you like seafood...

by sumptiousny

this is the perfect place to be. Eaten here before and found last night's experience better, my two friends shrimp (Paella & grilled dish) were unfortunately overcooked and a little chewy, that wasn't good. However, we started with half a dozen fresh oysters each and that was worth the entire meal in itself. My halibut was ok (nothing special), both the Paella and grilled scallops were perfect (barring the shrimps). Service and wine were good, nice ambience in Jazz room (although a little loud - not caused by the music). Ginger pudding dessert excellent. Go for the paella, oysters & grill. Also noticed slight snobbiness in one of the female (hostess) voice upon entering but won't get into it.

Pros: Location, good seafood, ambience

Cons: Little loud, inconsistent, pricey wine bottles

Always Consistent Food and Service

by asdrubal

Have been a regular for sometime and think they are very consistent as far as the food, service, and overall experience. The place does get packed, since so many people want to eat here, but as long as you realize you are at a 1 star restaurant and not a 3 star restaurant it is not a worry. Always a fun time.

Great Seafood/Steak

by nyceater15

I went here for my birthday a month ago, and again last week for brunch. I enjoyed the restaurant on both occasions, and strongly recommend it. On my birthday, I was seated with my family in the Jazz room. Being a musician myself, I really appreciated the quality of the musicians, and the good music made the atmosphere ideal. For an appetizer I ordered an eel roll, and thought it was outstanding. I then had the Filet Mignon for my entree, which was equally excellent. Brunch was also very good, and the seafood was extraordinary.

bad service + sub par food = poor review

by mzx380

city search math lesson above
and here's why

went there with a party of 7 where two were coming later so there were just 5 of us, my girlfriend call ahead to confirm that and they said okay, but when we got there it was another story entirely. they didn't want to seat us in their jazz room downstairs on the basis that those two people were coming later. after waiting for 20 minutes we were seated. it took a while for us to get our order taken and have refills of our wine. our waiter even left in the middle of taking our food order so we ordered late. regardless of this place being "good for seafood" i ordered a steak because nothing on the menu really spoke to me. my steak finally came and it was awful (i've had better steaks at burger king!) even though it's a seafood restaurant, if you're a restaurant in NYC and can't make a good steak, you have no business being in business. to top it off, the desert was all right (me saying anything negative about chocolate is the making of a poor review)

After a 3 hr dinner, we finally managed to get out of there. do yourself a favor, find another seafood place.

Pros: waiter was nice but slow

Cons: everything else

one good, one bad

by nycgiz

I have eaten here 2 times now. First time, very nice experience. Went to brunch and took my parents. Great service, fresh seafood/raw bar and brunch items. all and all a very enjoyable experience (except our seating had something to be desired. booth way in back, by waiters station). Second time was NOT good, and will probably not go back. Had a cramped booth in corner, with chairs shoved in it as well (for 6 people! how 6 people could eat at that table I dont know). could barely get in booth, and very uncomfy. The waiter was not professional, very awkward and uncomfortable service-not smooth at all. The appts were OK. nothing I couldnt get anywhere else in city though. Main courses had much to be desired. I ordered a tomatos/feta salad with grilled beef tips on top, medium rare. When I got it the meat was very well done and dried out, and the salad hot and wilted from sitting under the heat lamps (for probably a long time). and plate was dirty looking. I sent it back and didnt want another one. Mind you, I have never sent a dish back in my life and am very easy going, but it was totally unappetizing and un fresh. Our wine, by the glass, added up and glasses were barely filled to halfway point. The atmosphere is nice and I think the seafood and bruch items are best choice. I won't go back though since it just seems like they churn out business without attention to much detail. there are too many other good places in city, with much better food.

Pros: nice building, good people watching if you get a good seat, seafood

Cons: service uneven, food average, lack of attention to detail

Frustrating Experience

by stellagroove

As a New Yorker, I have been going to BWG for the last several years, especially for special occassions. Birthdays, celebrations, and the like. However, moving forward, I will be going elsewhere. Last Monday night, we had my 35th birthday dinner celebration, party of 8 people. I spent over $1,000 on Dinner. On Tuesday, after reviewing the bill, I learned that the restaurant overcharged me in several places. Everything from an extra bottle of wine to a "bar transfer charge" to desserts that we never ordered. I worked with two separate managers yesterday to get the bill straightened out. At one point, I had to leave my office to meet with a manager at the actual restaurant. I understand that we are all human and we make mistakes. But the issue I have, is the way this was handled. The fact that the manager and I had to go back and forth, and I had to constantly point and out and correct errors, along with the fact that I just spend over $1000 on dinner the night before, didn't sit well with me. The manager and restaurant should have done SOMETHING to compensate me for the trouble. They knew that I was a longstanding patron, they knew that I had just spent a large amount of money at their restaurant, and they knew that I have a healthy expense account to continue frequenting the restaurant. A handshake with a smile doesn't cut it. Any other restaurant would have apologized and comped something, whether an entree or cocktail, for my troubles. I'm very disappointed in the staff and the treatment at Blue Water Grill, and will be sure to let others knows about my experience. I have already told the 7 guests from dinner about the experience, so I am sure they will spread the word as well.

Pros: Food

Cons: Getting the bill right, overcharging, not handling appropriately

A must

by ncrossland2002

Everything about this place was great. The wait staff was very informative and eager to please. We had reservations and were seated immediately. The food was delicious and reasonably priced for the quality. The portions were enough so you were comfortably full and could actually eat desert. Wine was sold by the half bottle saving money by the glass and not having to drink a full bottle. The staff was on top of it all empty glasses and plates were removed from the table quickly, and our glasses were never dry. I would highly recommend this place.

Absolutely excellent!

by sharopooks

While recently waitlisted at the nearby Coffee Shop for possibly 20 minutes, my party decided to brunch here instead. I have had awesome lunches here in the past, & this weekend brunch was equally amazing! First, we were seated right away & gratefully in the more spacious & comfortable upstairs (ground floor seemed a bit hectic & louder, plus all the windows were open on a mild-but-still-chilly day). The grapefruit juice was fresh &, along w/ everything we ordered, delicious. Great bread & nice varied selection of dishes that did not disappoint. Don't worry about the emphasis on seafood - my non-seafood-eating husband was very happy w/ both the variety of non-seafood dishes as well as how everything tasted! (Sometimes, the non-seafood dishes at seafoody places are subpar, you know?!). Too bad we ended up too full for dessert, as the chocolate fondue here is divine (next time...). Service was very good though our table wasn't stocked w/ staples like salt, pepper & sweetener, so we had to ask for those. Later, when going to the restrooms downstairs, we saw the cool jazz seating area downstairs... would definitely like to dine there at some point. Soo grateful we had a relaxing brunch here instead of waiting 20 minutes to brunch at the louder Coffee Shop! Love this place & will return.

Pros: FOOD (all of it), brunch, selection, location

Cons: Though we didn't need reservations, seems like they'd be a good idea during peak times

Sophisticated Place

by nell516

I went there on a business dinner. We sat in the jazz room and the live band was playing. I really enjoyed the band and it added to the expectional ambiance. We were seated promptly and the wait staff was organized and on hand.

THE FOOD WAS GREAT!!! If I could have, I would have licked the plates. The sea bass was fantastic. The dessert is great. We had a bottle of white wine that was expectional. Unfortunately, I can't remember the name.

It's great for a large number of people or a date. Very classy place. Dress nice.

Unfortunate seating practices

by jewelleny

I went to the Blue Water Grill this past Friday and I requested the jazz room. I am African American (AA) as well as my date.
Downstairs we waited while the hostess consulted with the waiter and then we were led to the table directly in front of the kitchen. It was an extremely busy area. Once seated we looked around and noticed that the surrounding tables around the kitchen contained people of color who I am assuming to be AA as well based on appearance. There were no other African Americans seated in the rest of the room. At some point, the two AA gentlemen seated adjacent to us left and there were numerous other empty tables in the room. We waited and lo and behold, the next AA couple to enter the room was seated at that table while the other empty tables were filled thereafter. It was very disappointing to have to experience this in 2007. I have heard stories of these types of seating practices in New York (there are many) but was shocked to have to experience it firsthand. I decided to comment on my feelings on the card the waiter left on the table. He read it and the manager, Colin, came over to address the issue with us. I must say that Colin was extremely rude and condescending (yes, he was a person of color). It was quite interesting when he emphasized to us that we were sat at the table by the kitchen because there were no other seats available when we arrived when he was no where within our vicinity at the time. I do wonder how he knew of this fact. The first time he even acknowledged our presence was at this very moment after the bill was already paid. He took offense to the word minority and stated he is not from America. I do not know if anyone else has had a problem of this nature at the Blue Water Grill but I can only hope that this will not ever happen in the future. I have contacted friends and relatives and you will not see any of us at your etablishment until this issue is properly addressed.

Pros: music, decor, food

Cons: seating practices

Great evening

by kinyama

My friend and I went to Blue Water Grill last night without a reservation, assuming they would be slow on the Tuesday of Passover! They were busy, so we opted for the bar, and we sure are glad we did. We had a wonderful evening! The waitress in the bar helped us order a bottle of wine, and we ordered a full meal in the bar at one of the little tables! The food was amazing like always, but the highlight of the evening was the waitress. She was so friendly and helpful and funny and sweet that we didn't want to leave. We will be back!

Good points: The main courses were excellent. We were a large party and everyone enjoyed what they had ordered. Striped Bass was excellent, snapper decent, others were decent to excellent. Sushi appetizer soup, salad were fine. In our case, (large party -9), reservations were honored after short wait.
However - downsides were many. Cost of drinks at bar- Ketel One, rocks, twist =$13.50, with an average size pour, but nevertheless. Wine list was "absurd" in that only one or two bottles could be found for $50, and the rest were on up from there. Staff attitude was very much that we are who we are, and we are so good that if you don't like us, just leave, we don't need you.
In conclusion, despite the good to excellent on the main dishes, this restaurant exists for those with deep pockets who don't know or don't care that they are being bilked. Simply put, the pricing does not come close to matching the overall dining experience. There are better restaurants in NY to be had at this cost level.

Not worth the wait!

by saki_suzy

I've been to this restaurant on several occasions, and each time was very disappointed; each time had a reservation, each time, had to wait a long time for our table-- one time over an hour and a half--I don't think they really understand the concept of a "reservation" is for. Waiting a few minutes for a table is understandable, but consitently long waits, and uncaring staff (there attitude clearly seems to be "if you don't like it, then you can leave") I eat out often and all over the city, and i can say with all certainty that I would never go here again.

Excellent food!

by mjmnewyork

I've got to give it to them, the food was really very tasty. My mom and I went late night after a concert on a Wednesday night, so it wasn't crowded, and the food came out fast and it was really great! We both started with a salad, I had a mixed chopped salad and she had the pear salad, both excellent and then she had the Sea Bass and I had sushi for an entree, both great! The other great part of the dinner was that the bill only came to $100 for two, which included drinks, salads and entrees. I will definitely be coming back with friends!

Pros: Great food, service and atmosphere!

Great Crab Cake

by callisto

I dined here for lunch w/ a few friends & we all enjoyed the food. The crab cake sandwich was delicious. I was full after 1/2 of the sandwich but couldn't stop myself from finishing the rest. It is located in a nice area & the service was great.

Pros: Great Crab Cakes

Cons: None

Very nice restaurant

by kufam

Went here on a dinner date during restaurant week. We had to wait a while for a table (we had a reservation) but thats normal for this week anyway. They did give us champagne and apologized for the wait so it was ok. We sat in the main dining room. The server was very efficient, not overly friendly, but professional and he did a good job. Appetizers were amazing... probably the best I've ever had. Entrees were quite good though nothing would top the appetizers we had (seafood cocktail for me and oyster roll for her). Sommelier was very good and helped us with the wine since we certainly weren't pros in that area. Dessert was great too. All in all, a very nice dinner and a positive experience. Will certainly come back again sometime.

Pros: Great seafood, nice atmosphere, good service

Cons: waiting a long time to be seated

We got sick!

by blondie_1177

Be careful here, a friend and I went for Sunday Brunch, had the shrimp tempura roll as an appetizer and eggs benedict and within a few hours were both throwing up. Hopefully it was a one-time occurence.

Pros: Food tasted good

Cons: Throwing up later on

One of BRGuests Best

by searchcity

The service, food and decor rates a 10 with me. This is my favorite BRGuest Restaurant. The consistency of perfection makes you want you to return all the time, which I have done. The food is always presented beautifully with fresh ingredients. The service is always perfect. The room is lovely. Ask for a table in the main dining room (not under the stairs to the second level) and you will have a lovely evening.

Pros: food service decor
