Be Scene at Blue Water Grill Voted 11th Most Popular Restaurant in New York in the 2008 Zagat Survey & applauded as a restaurant that is "perfect for dates" and "never disappoints," Blue Water Grill is a dining destination in the heart of Union Square. Loyal guests and curious visitors are drawn to the former Metropolitan Bank space that features sexy, dimly-lit red chandeliers illuminating the intimate dining room, a spacious people-watching outdoor cafe and a cozy subterranean lounge featuring live jazz music. In the midst of the marble and majestic urban setting, Executive Chef Matthew Hughes' menu highlights a variety of seafood delicacies. From our Sushi Bar to our Oyster Bar, we've got your seafood cravings covered! If late-night isn't your scene, Blue Water Grill also offers up Sunday Brunch-with-a-view overlooking the Union Square Park Farmer's Market featuring Seasonal menus.

Editorial by Citysearch

This Union Square classic is such a well-oiled machine, it can feel a little like dining on an cruise ship, albeit an elegant one. Located in a former bank, the three-floor, heavily marbled space is decorated with red and gold antler-shaped sconces, and is filled to the gills with business diners and tourists. The menu executes so consistently, it's obvious why it hasn't changed much over a decade. Nearly every oceanic region is represented: Plump, clean Pacific Northwest oysters can be topped with classic or Thai mignonette, cocktail sauce or horseradish, while the Red Bull sushi roll--a gorgeous swirl of tuna, yellowtail, cilantro and jalapenos--would stand proud at Nobu.

Key Points

  • Seafood & Sushi
  • Jazz Brunch, Sidewalk Seating
  • Private Parties/Private Room

The Inside Scoop

  1. Know Before You Go - Despite an otherwise well-run front of house, half hour waits can accompany reservations.
  2. The Extras - The seafood-wary only have a few options, but a hearty, perfectly cooked filet mignon shouldn't garner any complaints.
  3. The Extras - The downstairs Vault Room seats up to 35, has its own prix fixe menu and is available for private parties or corporate events.
  4. What to Drink - The wine list is long and pricey, and servers may have trouble recommending one of the few bottles in the $40s. That said, a bump up to a $58 bottle of Dobbes Grand Assemblage Cuvee yields a stellar, light bodied red that pairs well with both fish and meats.
  5. Live Music - The Jazz Dining Room features live music--call for schedule.
  6. Where to Sit - The party is in the main room, thanks in part to the hopping bar scene, while the upstairs balcony provides a more sedate experience. Live jazz happens downstairs--ask the reservationist if interested.

Ratings_icons Pretty Damn Good

I agree that the service here is not the best, so I try to go during off hours and days that are not as crowded for dinner. I have to admit that the 6 or so times I've been here, I've gotten the same thing to eat every time: Swordfish with crabmeat/sweetpotato hash. I love it! I've tasted off of friends plates and different desserts and have never put a bad thing in my mouth here. You do have to keep of top of the waiter for drinks, bread, etc. They are very slow or not attentive at all. Go at 5:00 on a weekday and enjoy.

Went there with a friend for early dinner. The food was all right, nothing special. The waitress was so mean that she didn't guide us to a table when we were obviously waiting to be seated! She eventually gave us a table on the very corner, which was so uncomfortable! Couldn't believe it. What is it. She didn't like it my friend and I were looking damn sexy?! Never again!

Cons: , OK food

Like all BR Guest Restaurants, BWG, sells class (the restaurant looks nice, the hostesses are pretty, etc.) but fails to deliver. We waited half an hour (we had a reservation) and when we asked to be seated, were given the worst table in the place. Once we eventaully got seated (all tables are practically on top of each other), we were hustled through our meal by a waitstaff that clearly knows how quickly they need to turn the table over. If you want a nice dining experience, there's a million restaurants to go to other than this high-class TGI Fridays.

Cons: , average food

What a delightful spot to have dinner on a warm summer evening! There was a short wait for a table, which we spent at the bar, then we were seated on their patio. The food (blue marlin, carb-buster sushi, chocolate fondue) was wonderful, the wine list extensive, the sommelier helpful - all in all, a great place for a romantic dinner!

Everything about this place is at least good, but there isn't too much that qualifies as great. The appetizers are very good, the entrees are good, and the desserts are rather mundane. Overall, the food is good, though I recommend skipping dessert and just going for an appetizer and entree.

The service is good, and the atmosphere provides a very comfortable place in which to eat. I would certainly go there again.

Pros: Good food, Nice atmosphere

Went with a group of 5 for Restaurant week. Wanted to check it out because we had heard so many good things, to see if it was worth coming back on a regular night. The food was average at best. I can't say I haven't had better. The restaurant itself was beautiful, and we understood that they were having a busy night, but a badly cracked water glass, no silverware and an inattentive waitress (had to ask for a knife, among other things, repeatedly) was unacceptable. The dinner arrived 2 minutes after the appetizer. We felt rushed and uncomfortable. Certainly not what we expected from the famed Blue Water Grill. We were given second rate treatment because we were ordering from the restaurant week menu. I believe that the place did not put its best foot forward. My friends and I wont be coming back.

Pros: Nice decor, cozy booths, outside seating

Cons: , inattentive service, long wait

I brought my family here when they were visiting me in NY and I had heard great things about this restaurant. It was good, but not great. The Mahi was definitely better than the Swordfish which I felt was pretty dry. The drinks were ok but could of been stronger. We had 7 people and were squeezed into a table probably made for 6 so we didn't have a ton of room. The service was good though but I won't be back for a while.

The food and service was excellent. The prices are very reasonable. The portions are not huge but filling, and leave enough room for desert. My only suggestion is to get there early on a Saturday night if you don't like big crowds. I had a 6:45 reservation and by the time I left at around 8:15, the bar area was mobbed and hard to pass through to the exit.

Pros: food, service

With the most fabulous atmosphere and service in the city, the location, food, and charm all make this one of the most spectacular scenes in all of New York. One will walk away, feeling full and entirely satisfied by the extraordinary wine and food (not to mention the first-class service). The Blue Water Grill is an absolute must for anyone living in or visiting the tri-state area. Don't forget to sample the lobster mash potatoes! It's a must! Yum!

Pros: Lobster mash potatoes, Wine, Ambience

Cons: , Crowd, Noise

Four of us went for a perfect evening out. The food was excellent, with lots of choices and nice sized portions.

From the hostess to the waiters, everyone was friendly.

We especially loved the tuna and the desserts.

Pros: staff professionalism, great food

The food was extraordinary. .
It's served very stylishly and it tastes delicious. It's crowded so definitely make a reservation. It's a little bit loud but after a bottle of wine, which you can, chose from an extensive wine list, you'll forget about people around you. The staff is very pleasant and helpful when choosing your meal. Yes, it is pricy and portions are small but it's worth it! I would highly recomed it to anybody.

Pros: Pricy, Excellent staff, Amazingly served food

Cons: Crowded, Loud

We made reservations however they aparently overbooked or something so we had to wait for about 40 minutes. and even though we were the ones who were put out, the hostess was rude to us about it. However, the wait was worth it, the food was just great - make sure you have the tuna. The upstairs room was pretty warm but not that crowded. It was an alright dining experience.

Pros: Food, Decor

Cons: Rude servers, Reservation delays

my boyfriend took me there on friday night.
it's very crowded, so you sould make a reservation in advance.
very nice atmosphere. it gets kinda noisy, but all the tables are not too small or too big; just right size so you and your girl/boyfriend can seat closer and talk without yelling.

food was great. i had a robster. they are famous for seafoods, but meat was great as well. my boyfriend had steak and he absolutely loved it.

most of the wines (bottle) are on pricey side.

Very nice place. Went there for drinks and dinner. The upstairs bar was kinda busy when I got there, but it dind't really matter. was able to fit in and have a couple. Diner downstairs is GREAT! They had a 3-piece jazz band playing that was really good. They played all cover songs, but switched them up really nice. Only drag was that there was a long time inbetween sets. The bar downstairs was a nice place to grab an after dinner drink and take in some more music.

Pros: great atmosphere, Friendly waitstaff, JAZZ

The food was delicious (crabcakes, spring rolls, blackened tuna, lobster/scallops and definitely the chocolate fondue all fab). Our wait staff all pleasant, easily available and courteous as well. Definitely sit in the jazz area, music is low enough to talk over and enjoyable enough to have playing during your meal. Bring family/friends/dates to impress. Meal was worth the money especially for the city. DEFINITELY worth a try and a revisit!

Pros: delicious seafood, good wait staff, worth the money

Ratings_icons Reservations, what are they good for..

danapt

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!!!
We made reservations for 8:30 pm on a tuesday but we were not seated for almost an hour because "they were running behind schedule because the management overbooks." Maybe the management should have more faith in their chef who makes an AMAZING chilean sea bass. but then again it is loud and many customers get drunk and obnoxious and waitresses are sub-par. hmm..great food, but not a great place to dine.

Pros: the chilean sea bass, my hot date

Cons: tastless mahi mahi, pretend reservations, noisy drunks

The food was very good. Our party had four people in it and we all tried eachother's meals - one was just as wonderful as the other! The service was okay - but when I made the reservation I told them that it was my Mother in Law's birthday - what was great was come desert they remembered. It is that kind of service that means a lot to me - more than if my water gets filled quickly.

I took visiting family to BWG after a recommendation from a friend. However, the service was horrible. Even though we had a reservation we waited for a long period of time and the host was rude. It was a Sunday night and not overly crowded. Once we were finally seated, it was way in the back and under a staircase. On the positive side, the food is quite good, especially the olive crusted tuna. If you can deal with bad serice, the food is worth the trip.

Pros: Great Food, Nice Decor, Romantic

Cons: Poor Service

Ratings_icons Great Atmosphere, Sub-par food

smirky

I have been here a number of times because I love the atmosphere so much that I continue to give it a chance to redeem itself in the food department. Unfortuanately, the food has been consistently disappointing - especially the fish, not fresh most of the time, flavorless, over-cooked and the tuna I had (rare) on one occasion seemed like it had been sitting around for a while and was extremely gristly - I've had grilled tuna across the park at L'Express that was superior compared to this. Unless someone else is paying, I won't go back here for dinner.

Pros: Bar, Decor, Ambiance

Cons: Food, Crowded, Loud

Ratings_icons Totally Clueless Waitress!!

rit092769

My sister and I treated an aunt for brunch last Sunday. We chose Blue Water Grill on the recommendation of our friends and for its live music. Food was good. Ambience was good. Music was good. UNFORTUNATELY, OUR WAITRESS SUCKED BIG TIME!! She looked like she had a hangover that it took her 38 minutes before she got our orders. Two groups of diners behind us in line had been served already while we were just waiting patiently for someone to take our orders. Calling the attention of a service staff is comparable to catching a fly with chopsticks. Sad to say, she seems pretty clueless as to what service means. I may come back but only with the assurance that I do not come across her. I strongly recommend she goes back to training.

I've taken a few of my clients there. Everytime I went I had a very pleasant experience. The food was very good. The Chilean Seabass does not disappoint. But you need to save room for desert because the Banana Caramel Tower was very good. I'm shameful to admit I ate every bite of it.

I've eaten dinner here at least 10 times and never been disappointed. The service is always helpful and attentive. The oysters are great, although I would have liked a larger selection. The fish is fresh, nicely portioned and well cooked. I always finish with the Valrhona chocolate cake and a glass of Port. Always very solid and reasonably priced.

Pros: service and price, Fresh fish, Oysters

Being from San Francisco I may be biased on this but I had a $9 glass of cab that was similar to the quality of a $3 bottle of wine. Other than that, the food was very good. I had a tuna sushi roll that was excellent. I liked the downstairs eating area best, where the jazz is performed.

Pros: Sushi

Everything we ordered was delicious (from fish to steak) plus we had a great table in the jazz room. The entire experience was perfect. Just had a great Brunch with a friend on Sunday. This old bank converted into a restaurant looks very cozy and chic. You can walk in without a reservation to nab a table but they request that you'd better be finished in an hour though. The fluffy seafood omelette and fresh squeezed orange juice is hard to beat. With the Jazz music filtering in and the cocktails come in after 12 PM, you are guaranteed to ease your way into a lazy Sunday. We're going to try the jazz room next time.

Pros: Fresh Seafood, Nice Scene, Real Fresh OJ

Cons: Expensive Fare

My boyfriend and I got there early and ordered a martini from the Jazz Room bar. These martinis were huge, two for one basically, and absolutely delicious! Our waiter was incredibly friendly and was very knowledgeable of everything in the restaurant. We ordered the chopped salad and filet mignon maki roll (cooked) for appetizers. The roll was amazing. I had the blackened swordfish and he had the monkfish special. Everything was so savory! The more we ate, the more we loved our food! We had to try desert, even though we were stuffed to the gills. We shared the chocolate fondu and quickly forgot how full we were. The fruit that came with the fondu was perfectly ripe, no bruises at all. Everything about this place was perfect, even the price! What a wonderful treat! We can't wait to go back!

Pros: delicious food, impeccable service, good for the money

I've been here a million times and never been dissappointed. It is consistently good in all aspects.

It is a huge space, there are three seating areas. The dowstairs has live jazz music which is a nice setting. The main floor is good when the weather is nice --there are french doors that lead to outside seating. And the upstairs has a great overlook.

Just a few recommendations: the chopped salad, the crab cakes, the seafood tower, any seafood special, the sweet potato fries and you MUST get the warm chocolate oooooze cake w/vanilla ice cream for dessert.

We went on Christmas Eve and the food was delicious and service excellent. We sat in the Jazz room and had a lovely evening. The chopped salad is great, same as the other BR Guest restaurants. Very average and extremely disappointing. I was visiting from out of town and received a recommendation from a local. Service was by far the most disappointing. Two tables sat after us and were served water and drinks before the waiter even visited our table. Then the service went into high gear with multiple orders, appitizers and salads all coming out at once. For a dining experience, I would NOT recommend. If the food was amazing, we could could have forgiven the service, but even that was "ho-hum."

Ratings_icons Great service, space; so-so food

nycgirl2002

We had a big group here for a Saturday night dinner; our table was ready ~15 minutes later than the reservation time (pretty good for a busy night) and our server was excellent the entire time. The main floor space is lovely, but cavernous (which means *VERY* noisy), so our server was especially patient with us since we couldn't hear each other or her half the time. The food is pretty bland, but by no means bad. We had some good oysters and a few good fish dishes. At least they price their food moderately, so you don't feel ripped off. This is definitely a good place for drinks and is festive this time of year.

Pros: big, pretty space, room for groups

Cons: noisy

I had always wanted to try this restaurant, ever since my girlfriend told me about it and especially after I read the reviews on CitySearch and other websites.

I was overwhelmed.

Try the lobster bisque, it's especially creamy and rich. The soy-wasabi Chilean Sea Bass is better than you can imagine. With the soy, wasabi, ginger, and sticky rice, it's easy to imagine this is sushi. Our dinner was enhanced by a 1999 Pinot Grigio, recmmended by the waitress.

I cannot wait until I go back there...

Blue Water Grill is by far one of the better sea food restaurants I have visited, the food is fresh, the ambiance very swanky and the service equally good, except for the long wait, even if you have a reservation, and the very "popular" restaurant will keep up its image by making you wait for a table, no matter what! But the food is exceptional and definitely worth the wait! Visit its brother restaurants uptwon, Atlantic Grill and Ocean Grill, a wee bit even better!

The salad, appetizer, entree, and desert were all fall-on-the-floor to die for! nd the service was exceptionall as well. This is the best place for either a cozy date or a lively family gathering. EXCELLENT LUNCH! Appatisers are the way to go! The steamed (SHRIMP) dumplings were out of this world, and if you like sushi the salmon balls, and the spicy tuna totally impressed my husband (his initial thought being, probaly another over price so/so tourist trap). Just thinking about their LOBSTER BISQUE makes my mouth water. A must for desert is the CREEM BERLAY (?). Only one little problem is they serve it cold, make sure and ask to have it warmed up and you'll think your in heaven. The drinks were excellent, as was the service, and atmosphere. ENJOY!!

Pros: smoking tables, $ was justified
