I'm about to let y'all in on a big Southern secret. What you got right there in Brooklyn. Billyburg, to be exact. Now, bein? from the South, well, Texas actually...not really the South, just Texas .. used to be a country ... thinks it still is. You know...Don't Mess With Texas? Anyway, somebody in Billyburg made me a whole mess a' miss-ya, bein' I'm stuck in LA for the winter. Yeah, Miss Suzy over there at Union Picnic. Just the name make you feel good. Reminds me of an old roadhouse you might find anywhere down South in the 60's when I was growing up. Ceiling fans goin? round real slow, swingin red doors to the kitchen, cakes and pies on the counter ... they got lemonade, and real sweet tea, brewed...with real sugar. What I'm really pining for right now is one of those messy, fine and juicy pulled pork sandwiches that come with a huge pile of crispy thin fries, and maybe some fried okra. Oh! and those collard greens...now that's a real mess a greens you got there. Oh Lord, she got fried green tomatoes, blackened catfish, and what not...po-boy's if you so inclined.. Brisket and baby-backs... mm-hmmm. child, in this world! and dessert? Everybody knows Miss Suzy make the best red velvet cake in town. and dang if she don't make the best cobblers this side a Wichita Falls. You could die if she got the strawberry rhubarb... that's a long way for summer, though. but you can still have the blueberry, now... put you some vanilla ice cream on top? And you can call up in advance and book a party there you know ? She'll even make you a homemade birthday cake if you want, so don't miss out! You can order in too, now. Dang, It's California cold here tonight, but I'd give that up for y'alls blizzard to walk the 3 blocks from my house just to git me some thow down. That's what I miss. Remember, YOU got the best home cookin' in Brooklyn, so it's up to YOU to put the YOU in Union and get you some real soon! That's what I'm talkin' about ? a whole mess a miss ya!

Well I take back my positive review. walked by today and the place is shut down completely. the interior is completely torn up and there are health dept signs on the door. we looked up the inspection info on the nyc health dept website, and holy hell.. their violation score was 147 (the 3rd highest in NYC right now!!!!), and just fyi most normal places get an 18 if that tells you anything about how bad it was...the lists of offenses list rodents, flying insects, insufficient hand washing and soap areas, dirty fod surface areas etc. the list goes on..im really sad this place is gone, but im also outraged that i ate their so many times and had no idea how unsanitary it was. look it up online and read it for yourself. i am DISGUSTED!!!

off the hook, off the hook, off the hook. great menu, everything rocks. it rocks every time. we bring our daughter here, because she eats everything they have, and if you know fussy 4 year-olds, you know how hard that is. staff is so sweet to our daughter, and service is fast. brunch is a little hard to get into, and we won't wait around on the sidewalk with a little kid. we go around 7 weekdays, or get delivery.

red velvet cake is the best we've ever had. since we moved from downtown brooklyn to willyburg we've tried all the restaurants in the hood. we love diner, dumont, (bean, R.I.P.), bonita, zippe-zappe - and union picnic. the pie is to die, though it seems to run out fast. biscuits are spectacular, get them with the ones and twos. meal for two tops out at around $30. insane.

The food is great, but the service is always really slow. We've been going here for almost two years now and it never fails, great food - slow service. And I'm saying that dinner has actually taken about an hour more than it should, just because of the slow service.

So go - enjoy the food. But if you have plans later that night, just know...great food, slooooow service.

collard greens, fried chicken, mac & cheese, mashed potatoes & gravy, absoulutely spectacular. black fried catfish, cheese grits, catfish hush puppies, every single soul food bit you want. cobbler and sweet tea. brisket sandwich and go'wan, for real. this joint just needs you to hear more curtis mayfield and fontella bass. recommended.

if you feel like going over to this restaurant and eating in or taking out some great food go for it. however, do not order delivery. as of late they have started forgeting condiments, beverages, utensils and even the bun for my hamburger on one occasion.

the tasty food keeps luring me back, but after placing an order with who i assume must be the same rude sunday manager i keep hearing about, i'm not sure i will again.

hate to pay for food i can make 'just the way I like it' but there's some good eatin' here! enjoy the chicken (fried or rotisserie), turkey, and chicken fried steak but i really like the sides. i recommend the greens and fried okra and i especially love the gravy! if only biscuits and gravy were offered. also, only nyc place i know that does an oyster po' boy right...w/hot sauce! good for delivery but in house is best.
