My husband and I were in NYC for the weekend prior to New Years and we were looking for a place away from Times Square on our final night in the city. We lucked into a late reservation at Itzocan Bistro. We didn't realize that they had a fixed price menu for New Years eve, which, I think, was an abbreviated version of their regular menu, but it turns out that it didn't matter; the food was simple wonderful. We had the pumpkin and shrimp bisque, a goat cheese souffle, prawns with a risotto cake in a slightly spice broth, and filet in a rioja reduction with a potatoe gratin, as well as creme caramel and a frozen chocolate torte for dessert. Delicious from start to finish. This was one of the best meals we had had in a long time, and certainly the (food) highlight of the weekend. The restaurant itself isn't fancy and it's small (cozy), so reservations are probably a good idea. Service was very fast, in fact, maybe a bit too fast at times. (I think there must have been some turnover since older reviews; our waiter said he had been here a year, and was very attentive). We wanted to linger over our appetizers, but our entrees arrived with still a bite left on the plate. I think I would let them know from the start if you want to "dine". We asked for some time between the entree and dessert which the waiter happily granted.

You will know, after your first bite, that the chef here loves his food and loves his customers. Every single dish I tried I loved; from perfectly spiced mussels, succulent lamb shank, ideal roast chicken, and an ideal Caesar Salad (and, yes it comes with anchovies, which is how it's supposed to be; it ain't Caesar without the fish!). I also love the fact how inexpensive everything is. The service is straight forward and attentive. The space is uncluttered and comfortable. Worth the trip to Little Mexico - for sure!

If you're looking for fajitas and burritos, this is not the place. But if you want excellent mexican cuisine, this is the place! TexMex is fine, but if you want an upscale change, Itzocan Bistro does the job! I never had this style of Mexican food and it was such a welcome change.

It's far uptown for those not used to going up that far, but personally, I feel it's well worth the trip. The place is small but a decent size. The bathrooms are very cozy and I felt like I was in someone's home. I had the gazpacho with advocado soup (a special). Perfect on a hot day, and made just the way I like--slightly chunky. Ingredients were so fresh and tasty! My friend had the braised lamb shank which I tasted. Soooo good! Literally, the meat comes off the bone. The merlot sauce was fantastic with it.

I had the seafood pozole. YUM! The only negative part was that there were a number of unopened mussels in the pozole. But this is bound to happen, and I put them aside. (I never got sick if anyone wondered. And it didn't make me think the restaurant was less fresh.) The shrimp were tasty, cooked with the whole body, adding tons of flavor to the pozole. Red snapper was excellent in the dish. I couldn't finish the whole thing, but was more than happy to take it home. I also had their semolina flan with fresh fruits... loved it!

I loved the bread and butter that came at the beginning. The staff was more than attentive without being pushy, filling our water glasses and gave us additional bread so we could soak up the soup broth. I liked that the didn't present a check until we asked. They also allowed the 2 of us to sit at a 4 seater with a better location, which was nice. I'm already missing the food and will definitely go back to try more dishes.. maybe their prix fixe!

Hate to have to echo comments about the poor service when the food was so good, but it was the case for us. The waitresses were great when they were actually paying attention to us, but that was few and far between. Not a good place to go in the winter, especially if you're sitting within 15 feet of the door. Our group was freezing cold. Luckily, the delicious food was warm and really hit the spot. They have a little glossary of terms so you can figure out what you're ordering, but even then we still had to ask what some of the stuff was. No one was disappointed with their food except for the fact that there were anchovies on the Caesar salad.

The food is a fantastic mix of mexican flavors with french skills. The flavors were new and complex. The food is perfectly presented, the price is normal, and the ambient was laid back and unpretentious, perfect for a nice night with friends.

This tiny restaurant is a great refreshment for the neighborhood. The food is amazing! Ive already tried every single dish on the menu and I have never been disappointed. The food is a very unique fusion of French and Mexican cousin. Especially, I recommend the duck, lamb and steak. It is not a BYOB anymore. And their sangria is one of the best out there. I strongly disagree with the service criticism below. Girls are always nice and customers get their attention all the time. It is a great place for a date.

I've been here 4 times, and each time its marvelous. The French-Mexican cuisine is imaginative and delicious. There are no tacos or burritos on this menu! This place is great for a date and there is rarely a wait for a table. Try the Kaluha pot de creme for dessert!

This place is excellent. I went here on a Sunday night and couldn't have been moer pleased. The quiet ambience was great as was the scrumptious food.
