Let's be honest - the food is always great here.

What is not so consistent - the service. On more than one occassion when I am with a large group where the tip will already be included, the service is awful. On the most recent visit, the waiter had to flagged down to bring us water, take the wine order (and he had to bring someone else to the table because he had no knowledge of the wine list), to take our order, to reorder win, to bring us the tab, and to correct the billing. We had to search him down each time. And once we finally asked for him to correct the billing mistrakes, he assigned someone else to the table. Unfortunately, beacuse I am usually a fan of this place. Considering the money you pay, you would expect good food AND spectacular service. Not the case.

Cons: Poor service with attitude

Gotham won me over with the $25 Prix Fixe restaurant week lunch in February (note that the 3-course lunch deal is now running at $31, which is still a steal!). The food was exquisite, the service impeccable and the atmosphere elegant (with a tad corporate air feel).

I loved the refreshing chilled melon salad to start off with. Then the delightful miso-marinated cod with spring vegetables and foamy pure tasted light and healthy. But the winner was the grilled hanger steak with baby carrots and crispy fingerling potatoes bordelaise sauce; so perfectly cooked, tender and well-seasoned. And to top it off, the Gotham warm chocolate cake left an indelible impression on my mind as the best chocolate dessert I can remember to date.

Tip: Every Monday, Gotham invite diners to bring their own bottle of wine from the featured region of the $75 prix fixe uncorked menu, without the customary corkage fee. In March, the theme is Spain.

The experience at Gotham Bar and Grill is not one to be missed while in Manhattan. It's such a unique place - you can dress formal or casual and you'll get the same level of service. The service is formal yet friendly and Gotham has always been CONSISTENT on delivering a memorable experience (oh....just when you think it doesn't get any better after your meal, the dessert menu arrives - whatever you choose, you'll LOVE it)... the Pastry Chef is a MASTER!
Try dining at the bar for a casual lunch - it's a great spot to people watch.

I went after wanting to for so long and being in the food industry, it was about time. Went for lunch, ordered 3 apps, 2 entrees, 3 desserts.

The terrine was definetly the best of the 3 apps, octo was a bit over-done, and the flavors didnt stand out at all. Their tartare was ok, I'm into slightly over-seasoning, but this was just too much for the dish +how it was plated, I promise you, gordan ramsey would have thrown it on the floor.

Tried the shrimp risotto, they put one shrimp split in the dish. you cant really call it shrimp risotto with one shrimp, come on. +the risotto was way over done. I tend to like my pasta a bit over done, just slightly past al dente, but this was like eating rice. no bueno.

The duck was ok. polenta and succotash were good.

The apricot terrine was eh. summer cheesecake, oh this was interesting. the sorbet was I believe a white balsamic huckleberry. Cheesecake though, it tasted tangy like there was blue cheese in it and no one seemed to know what it was made of. they found out for us and it was 80% mascarpone and 20% gorgonzola. I guess they knew people wouldn't order it if they had that on the menu. plus the linzer tart that came with it was bigger than the cheesecake. 3rd dessert I can't even remember what it was.

Service. Our waited greeted us with, "so 'bout some lunch today" No shit. Didnt smile once. never checked on us. when we didnt order wine they left the wine glasses on our small table with 3 apps.. never cleaned the crumbs off. left our empty bread plates. No one could or did explain the dishes. then when our waiter dissapeared, it seems his shift ended. No goodbye and so-and-so will be your waiter/waitress. Goodness. It was atrocious. Latte wasnt worth the 5$ something. which was even more than le bernadin's.

Perhaps it was because we came right when lunch was ending? I still dont think thats an excuse. Maybe it was just a bad day in general? Or maybe I just expect too much. Hope others have a better experience.

My Husband and I went to Gotham for Valentines day. The meal was amazing every bite was savory, we were disappointed when the meal was over. I wish the resturant itself had a little more character but other than that the experience was tops.

We ate there a few months ago for my boyfriend's birthday. We were on time for our res and seated promptly. The dining room has great lighting and a nice ambience, with beautiful white drapey things hanging from the ceiling. It's a little loud but auite manageable. We started with excellent house cocktails which are all very old school and for serious drinkers - no fruity watered down concontions and lots of bourbon based drinks. We ordered a nice bottle of rose champange for the meal. Wine list is pricey. The menu offers 3 savory courses and dessert, we figured there must be a reason for this so we went for 3 savory courses. All the food was very delicious, including ceviche, lobster, berkshire pork. All were wonderfully tasty and artfully presented. However portions are rather large and I was literally about to explode by the end. We didn't even have dessert which is unheard of for us. Service was professional and friendly. We saw Alfred Portale greeting some tables in the dining room. We were not among the lucky ones but it was nice to see him there. The place is enduring for a reason - excellent food, well prepared, beautifully presented. My only complaints: 1) tables are close together and it's an uncomfortable situation to go to the restroom - you need someone to pull the tabel out for you and if you don't wait for that to happen, your butt will be in your neighbor's dinner (and I'm not fat), and 2) the price! jawdropping prices, and I've eaten everywhere from Daniel to Eleven Madison Park but whoa, that $48 lobster makes your pause for a moment. It's a place for people with stacks of money who don't want to get dressed up but want 5 star food and great service.

Lunch during Restaurant Week, second year. Hostess doesn't greet us. Arrive 5 minutes early for reservation, empty room, made to wait the 5 minutes. Returning then to the hostess, a male host tells her "we have another minute, (make them wait)".
Seated, our server tries to push drinks on us, condescending to our tap water order. I was in the mood for wine. Server brings a wine list, I asked him about wines by the glass but he cut me off and walked away mid sentence dismissing me with: "we have so many (read it yourself, don't waste my precious time)" . I finally got his attention to ask "how many wines by the glass do you have that are red and Italian?" Oh he says, we have two, a Chianti and a Rioja. I opened the wine menu and confirmed that a Rioja is Spanish, not Italian. For this kind of superior attitude, he should at least know the difference between continents, and further, the Italian wine is probably not a Chianti. In any case, I was put off the wines.

The Restaurant Week menu is not only diminutive but also I am fairly sure it is identical to last year's.

I get it that Restaurant Week is discounted, and many people tip only the percentage of the cheap prix fixe price, I am sure they would much rather have people paying full price and buying liquor and leaving big tips, but they sure as heck are not going to get there with snotty abbreviated service. I would have ordered wine and full entrees from their main menu but insulted, I ordered the minimum.

The food was nice- I choose that word intentionally. We ordered melon salad, gazpacho, steak (2, as the other choices were boring cod and cheap gnocci), panna cotta and chocolate cake. We asked to share and they looked at us like we were from Mars. The cake was especially lovely and light consistency with dark chocolate- but overall:

The Food is not good enough to compensate for the miserable condescending attitude and LOUD dining room. Try Union Square Cafe.

I was in New York on a trip and we ate here for lunch, I had the black cod it was amazing the presentation the taste the textures just truly great. It was really busy for lunch and the service was still top notch. Everything was timed perfectly, the server was able to answer every question we had. If your ever in the area stop and eat you wont be disapointed.

My boyfriend and I are huge fans of the TV show ?Top Chef? on Bravo, which is where we learned of the chef of Gotham: Portale. We try to spend one romantic night at a ?top? restaurant in New York every time I am able to visit. On my most recent visit to the city for our anniversary, he took me to Gotham. We were seated immediately and greeted promptly by our server. Our first impression of the restaurant was disappointing: the wine list was unimpressive - especially considering those at other top restaurants in the city - so we ordered an entire bottle of something familiar and reasonably priced. However, when it came to ordering an appetizer, entrees, and dessert, our waiter?s recommendations were right on: the octopus appetizer was delicious even for those unadventurous with their tastes. For dinner my boyfriend ordered a steak which seemed to melt in your mouth, while I ordered the grilled halibut which was not even on the menu. *It is the single most delicious dish I have ever tasted.* And for dessert we ordered the S?more, which staid true to it?s name. We even recommended it to the pair sitting at a nearby table who noticed it when it arrived. Despite the wine list, this was the single most romantic and delicious meal I have ever shared, and I look forward to returning to Gotham for future celebrations.

Food

I had the mushroom pasta and the black miso cod. The Pasta was delicious, very rich and earthy like i expected (and the bread we were served was very handy in mopping up the sauce) and the pasta was well cooked. The Miso Black cod was extremely tasty, the fish was perfectly cooked as was the veggies and rice. My only regret was that i didn't order something more 'unique' to the restaurant as this seemes to be a common dish.

My wife ordered a warm mushroom salad and the free range chicken, She enjoyed the mushrooms and other stuff in the salad but was overwhelmed by the greenery on it (which was almost comical in how over the top it was stacked). As for the chicken it was perfectly cooked and she enjoyed it. personally I'm not a fan of chicken, esp chicken breast so i found the sample i had disappointing (but it's not something i would have ordered in the first place). The root veggies that came with the chicken were really well done.

About the only disappointment with the food was the lack of options at lunch, the menu was really heavy on seafood, it would have been nice to have more non seafood options as an appetizer or an entree. Also the soup selection was disappointing, Both of us really wanted soup but the one they had (celery and pear) just sounded blah.

We had the chocolate cake for desert and it was very good, it came with gingerbread ice cream which i didn't care for (but then I'm not a ginger fan) but she loved.

Service.

Service was friendly, we were early for our reservation but were seated immediately coat and bag check was very nice and the hostess was as friendly as you'll find in a place like this in NYC. Service was a bit stuffy but again that is to be expected in a place like this and it wasn't as bad as you'll find in other places. The lack of a dress code was also very nice

Overall

It was great for a 'special lunch' not sure if I'd come back for a dinner as I'm not sure if the same value would be there.

Recently went to Gotham for lunch and it was delicious! I never knew where it was, but was familiar with the restaurant from seeing the chef on bravo. I stopped in for a quick bit...their soups are fantastic and the atmosphere is excellent. I found them to be very hospitable. I look forward to an opportunity when I can try the lunch prix fixe.

Having tried to get reservations here for several months now since Alfred Portale's recent "Most Outstanding Chef" award from the JBF, I finally lucked out and snagged a Sunday 9pm table for four. The space is simple, but striking at the same time. Hostess, servers, bussers--all staff were very attentive and pleasant. Other guests seemed fairly stuffy and we did wait several minutes longer than usual to be given menus, but no negatives other than that. A perfectly lemony Lobster & Black Truffel Risotto was phenomenal, gezpacho was made very tasty by the inclusion of roasted peppers and avocado, Barbecue Spiced Muscovy Duck done exactly medium-rare and was as spicy and savory as I had hoped for. Miso Cod was much more brightly flavored than, yes, even Nobu's. Plum Souflee was nice, though paled in comparison to a well-contructed version of a S'more served as a graham cracker crust based tart. Presentation on all platings were extremely impressive as well. This was a truly fine dining experience all around.

Gotham has set a standard of excellence which is tough to match in NYC. First impression is reminiscent of the Powerbroker eighties with its high arching doorway, and open well lit airy room. An atmosphere which says "Look at me"...(good tip. You will be noticed, so be comfortable with how you look). The arwork is a fabulous mix of old and new photography, sometimes subtle, sometimes bold, with a theme which is uniquely NYC. The Maitre d' is helpful, warm and professional. I have gone in when there has been a wait for a table longer than expected, and they are always quick to bring to your attention they have not forgotten you. If one has to wait a bit for a table, the bar is huge and perfect for pre-dinner conversation as it is never too loud. The "90 foot" ceilings help keep the chatter to a soft hum. The food is excellent. Upon last visit I had the Tuna tartare which was excellent. A bit of an Asian flair with hints of sesame and ginger worked perfectly. My second course was the Porcini mushroom soup which is ladled at the table, and so wonderful that I do not have the words to describe. It is served with goat cheese and pancetta and is a meal in itself. For the main course I had the steak served with a stack of Crispy thick onion rings and hearty bordelaise sauce. The steak was a perfect medium rare and served warm. For dessert order the chocolate cake. The only thing which was even a slight problem to an otherwise perfect experience was they didn't have the wine we ordered. But that was made up for immediately when the Sommelier apologized personally, and picked out a perfect substitute. Lynch-Bages. Upon re-presenting the wine list, I noticed that the wine we ordered was ALREADY taken off. Impressive. You will not be disappointed. Always perfect attentive service. If looking to impress a client or date, this is as close as it gets to a sure thing. I will certainly be back.

Upon re-presenting the wine list, I noticed that the wine we ordered was ALREADY taken off. Impressive. You will not be disappointed. Always perfect attentive service. If looking to impress a client or date, this is as close as it gets to a sure thing. I will certainly be back.

Pros: Food, wine, service.

Cons: Don't visit for dinner if on a tight budget.

.

The tables are a bit close and it can get a little loud, but the food is delicious and the service is outstanding! Do not skip dessert!

The place was an excellent place for lunch - my friends and I had the pre-fixe lunch menu. The service was great and the waiter made sure we always had fresh bread to eat. I definitely would like to come back for dinner.

The atmosphere was key - not stuffy, very relaxing and enjoyable. The waitress did not rush us to leave even tho it was crowded. We could have stayed there for hours drinking tea and coffee.

Highly recommended for special occassions.

I took my b/f of 4 years here for his birthday. It was beautiful. Everything from the food to the service was incredible. All I had to do was raise my hand and a waiter was there to serve us. The food was fantastic and worth every penny, I had the house special..yummy pasta and he had a wonderful large NY steak, it was the best of the best. Even if you don't order desert, there are these little nibblets that come out for you to snack on. I would definetly go back just to eat at this restaurant again.

What a goooooorgeous restaurant! I had lunch there today and was immediately so impressed with the ambiance... Lots of businesspeople in suits and a very classy crowd. The service was fantastic... very attentive and they all truly seemed to want you to have a perfect experience there. I got the $24 prix fixe, which was an absolute STEAL! The asparagus salad was fantastic, the mahi mahi literally melted in my mouth, and the warm flourless chocolate cake with mango sorbet was phenomenal. If you don't want to spend $70+ on a dinner, the lunch prix fixe is a great way to try the cuisine without dropping all the money, and I was perfectly satisfied with the lunch. Truly an outstanding restaurant.

I can't afford this place, but I went during Restaurant Week. One of the better restaurants that lives to the hype. I've tried other high-end restaurants, and I didn't think they were all-that. But Gotham really lived up to the hype.
It's a business class type restaurant, a lot of people in suits and dressed to the nines. The service is impeccable and they really look to make sure you are taken care of.
The food had flavor, taste and it melts in your mouth-goodness. The portions are middling, but it was just right - because for an appetizer, entrée and dessert, I was full.

The manager was cold and rude from the minute we walked in. She proceeded to get only worse as she hustled us out of our table when it was obvious they neither needed the table nor were closing anytime soon. Once outside and in front to hail a cab, the manager and hostess gossiped about us and then glared at us. I will never go back here ever. I have never been treated worse at any restaurant, let alone one where you're dropping $200 a person.

Engjoyed the 3 course lunch at the fabulous bar, such a deal ($24.70). Asparagus/beet salad, mahi mahi and warm choc. cake with an amazing espresso/walnut ice cream. Love the spacious dining room and the bar is great for solo diners. A good way to take advantage of a pricier NYC establishment.

Dinner is first class all the way. Everything was fabulous from the wine to the food to the ambiance. The service was top shelf and the level of attention that we received went above and beyond the call. This is a great place to have dinner or even just for drinks. Parking is ample; the location is great if you are in LM.

The food here is fabulous. However, when I spend that much money on a meal, I expect an experience that includes top-notch service. Yes, the server was courteous, but made absolutely no attempt to connect with our table of 4. Everything the wait staff did was very mechanical -- as one reviewer mentioned, no smiles and no sincerity. The minute we finished our first bottle of wine, she asked, "Should I bring another?" in a way that seemed more fitting for a restaurant less successful.

I would be willing to give Gotham another chance, but I'd much rather spend my money at Union Square Cafe, where the ambience, service, and food were much, much better.

Gotham's food is fabulous, 98% of the time. I've been there on numerous occasions and with the exception of a recent disappointment (ordered the duck and the dish came cold to the table, so I had to send it back), the food is always excellent. The service is efficient, but mechanical. There is not an ounce of warmth or sincerity in the wait staff. They are simply doing their job, which five years ago would have been just fine. But dining today is a multi-sensorial experience and the staff's attitude plays a huge part in that. They should try to smile every so often and mean it.

2 part review. Food was off the charts. Loved it all. 4 of us went for dinner on a Tuesday. seafood, steak, dessert all wonderful in presentation and taste. Go for the food!! The wine guy was horrible. He talked down to us, when we could even get his attention. Felt like a beggar on 5th Ave talking to him. Have a drink or soda and stay away from the wine!

After doing hours of searching for the perfect place to take my mom to dinner for her birthday I finally discovered Gotham. It was exactly what I was looking for; gourmet, seafood, excellent presentation, enormous wine list, beautiful setting. We opted to do the three course option and were not disappointed. The miso black cod and rack of lamb were the hits of the table. The one drawback was the service-while professional and precise, our waitress was not friendly by any stretch of the imagination. She was as rigid and cold as a frozen turkey.

I would have to agree with previous reviews regarding the aloof staff. The food and presentation were extraordinary, but the greeting I received at the door was a step or two just below a sneer. I was with a business group and well dressed, so Im not sure what prompted the response. When reminded of a drink order that had not been received, our waiter felt it necessary to claim that the drink was not ordered and that is why he didnt bring it, not that he had forgotten. With the amount of money that was put down for that meal, I expect EVERYTHING to be outstanding, including the service. So, even though what we were served was beyond perfect, I probably wouldnt return because of staff. Great food is not that hard to find.

My favorite will have to be the seared foie gras & the grilled lamb! The foie gras would transport you with it's flavors and it was simply divine, the grilled lamb was perfectly tasty, not overcooked, and the seasoned herbs were really mouth watering, and I can't wait to return for another occassion! The desserts I loved was the creme brulee of caramel or chocolate dipped with the churros, as well as the delicious strawberry souffle! I loved the presentation, the service, and most importantly the food, we were never rushed, we had the nicest table, and we enjoyed the whole experience!

My girlfriend and I ate at Gotham bar and grill last night, and our experience was amazing. Everything we ordered was prepared to perfection, and was presented perfectly. The asparagus mushroom risotto, seared tuna, and lobster tail were the best we ever had. Then the desserts came, and they were hands down the best dessert we ever had. The cinnamon rolls melted in our mouths, and the chocolate cheese cake did as well. Our waiter took exceptional care of us and paid proper attention to us. I will sum it up with, it was worth every penny!

The newpaper reviews in the window are from 7 yrs ago! The service was helpful, but aloof. The dinner dining had mixed reviews by my party. I ordered the seared tuna- give it a 8.5 out of 10. The organic free range chicken was a 6, the lamb chop was excellent, and we had to send the halibut back 2x with no result- ended up having to order anther dish (cod) in which the fish was good but the clams were too tough to eat and the sausage wasn't even finished cooking (thus could not be consumed). Save your money and eat somewhere else.

I really cannot believe all of these negative reviews on Gotham! My husband and I are hardcore traveling foodies. I think I have been to all of the restaurants in NY ranked 20 or above on Zagats, in addition to as many Michelin-starred restaurants as we can manage on vacations. Without a doubt, Gotham is our favorite restaurant in New York. The food there is always polished, but really tasty. It's a beautiful space. The crowd is not young, but hey, go somewhere else to get a drink afterward. The highlight here is definitely the food. I have loved the seared tuna there. I have had an incredible duck risotto there (with cabbage), sweet shrimp risotto, filet. Gotham is awesome- so much better than Jean Georges (where I found my food inedible), or Union Square Cafe, or so many other hyped restaurants in NY.

I had a wondeful time at Gotham bar and grill. We had their filet mignon and lobster pasta. Both were delicious. However, even though i understand its a service thing, or perhaps we were there when it wasn't too busy, but i felt like i needed some personal space. The waiters were staring at our table the whole time. It is very pricey though, and the portions are small, so you will be hungry!

That place is overpriced for what you get in your plate. If you are hungry don't go there. I don't eat fish and I wanted just pasta. The "PASTA of the DAY" was linguini with lobster sauce and I didn't want that. The waitress said I can't have any substitutions, which was absurd. If you are going to an expensive restaurant the least they can do is work with you. I got the "VEGETARIAN" meal. When the dish came I thought it was a joke. There was 3 baby carrots, a spoon full of spinach, sun dried tomatoes, 3 pieces of eggplant, and 10 string beans, oh and onions. That was it. No Rice,No Pasta NOTHING. I had to go home and eat. Maybe I'm not classy but when I go out to eat that's exactly what I want to do "EAT". I will never go back there again.

The food, waitstaff etc are wondreful. but the greeting at the door is so rude, that it puts a damper on the entire meal. everytime I go to Gothan, I am treated like road kill by the dragons at the door. Steel yourself to an unpleasant entrance to get to the wonders that await.

Gotham has good food that is displayed elegantly (can you say Leaning Tower of Pisa made of lobster?) Our waitress was almost snotty and was sometimes difficult to find. My group felt ignored during certain times of the evening. The restaurant is attractively decorated but totally lacks an atmosphere partly because of the extra bright lighting. I like to have a cool, fun, or romantic atmosphere when I'm paying these kinds of prices. I have spotted a couple of celebrities eating close by though. I would at most only recommend this place for a business dinner rather than a good time with friends or a significant other.

Gotham Grill is widely considered a top-flight restaurant in NYC, and it is for a few reasons. Namely, the space is beautiful, although the tables are set very close to each other and the waitstaff was very attentive. However, we did have to wait about 20 minutes to be seated. I also had high expectations for the food, which weren't quite met. While the tuna tartare appetizer was excellent, the ny steak entree was nothing special. Also, the waiter wrongly described a wine I had inquired about causing the sommelier to have to make a trip to the table to offer an alternate recommendation. However, that bottle of wine was comped. Also, the wine list though extensive, featured too many obscure vintages and in particular not enough Napa wines. Due to time constraints, we were unable to sample dessert. The prices were in line with restaurants of comparable quality.

Just got back from a super weekend in NYC. Gotham Bar and Grill was one of the highlights of our visit. The first course was absolutely the BEST. The entree was good but not outstanding. Dessert was very perfect. Service was outstanding both in the dining room and at the bar. Definitely will go back again. This is a restaurant not a train station run by the Swiss, plan to make a reservation and be prepared to be flexible (you may have to wait a few minutes for your table when you arrive.)

Food: The rack of lamb was rich and saturated with flavor. The appetizer (pasta of the day) was very tasty, and the Atlantic halibut had a sense of individual style, but was a bit bland. Overall, the food was good. The Gotham Chocolate Cake was superb, a highly recommend for chocoholics.

Ambience: The tables offer little intimacy, unless you are seated toward the back of the restaurant. We were seated next to a very loud group of 8, doing business. The Maitre d' asked our neighbors to tone it down four times. And, following dinner, she asked if we would like to relocate for dessert.

Wonderful service and amazing food make this place a must try. If you are looking for something romantic, look into alternatives like Bouley or Gramercy Tavern (both excellent choices).
