I've been going to J.D. for years and would follow him anywhere (most recently from Eva Scrivo). He's everything you want in a hairstylist: he does your hair beautifully and is always on time, he's a consummate professional who not only listens to your requests but makes thoughtful suggestions, and he's a great conversationalist. I always look great and feel great when I leave his chair.

I recently followed JD Bowers here from Eva Scrivo and love this place. It is in a wonderful location and has an extremely relaxed feel. Everyone who worked there was so nice and accommodating.
JD is the BEST!!! I have been switching stylists for two years now and finally found him and it is the best haircut and color I have ever had!! I was so sad when I called Eva and they told me he was no longer there (and wouldn't give me his info) but I persevered and tracked him down on facebook!! I would recommend him to anyone and everyone and I LOVE the new salon!

I've been going to JD for about two years and can't say enough good things about him. He recently left Eva Scrivo and is now at Tosler Davis and it was a no-brainer for me to follow him to the new salon (which is a great space and super convenient -- close to union square and lots of subways). He always does an amazing job with my hair (cut and color), always listens to what I ask for, and the cut is so good that the layering looks good even when I let it air dry. The last time I got my hair cut and left the salon someone actually stopped me on the subway to ask where I got my hair cut b/c she liked it so much. He's a total sweetheart and very down to earth -- I'd bounced around from stylist to stylist before my friend recommended JD to me and I haven't looked back since!

JD is the best -- I told him exactly what I wanted and I left with an amazing hair cut! The salon was great and everyone was so nice! I definitely recommend JD!

Beth Ann was my colorist. She was efficient, attentive, and responsive to my requests.
I hated my hair when I walked in, and I loved it when I walked out. :)
Pros: Great highlights, casual and friendly environment

I needed my hair cut and was recommended to Patty. This turned out to be the most amazing experience! She not only gave my uncooperative, frizzy hair the perfect blow-out, but she listened to exactly what I wanted and created exactly what I needed- even though I wasn't even sure what I needed (and for only $80!). To top it off, the entire staff was warm and the environment inviting. I live in Brooklyn, but will make the commute from now on. Patty is the best and I can't wait for next time!
Pros: Great cut
Cons: none

I had been going to the same colorist to have my hair highlighted for years and she suddenly decided to move back to California. I was devastated! I friend recommended that I go to see Sean at Tosler Davis and I am so glad that I did. Sean is amazing with color! My hair always looks natural and healthy. I have never received so many comments has I have had since going to Sean. His assistants are great as well and will give a great blowout which is included with any service. I highly recommend Tosler Davis!
Pros: Amazing color, great ambiance!

I've only been twice, but both times it was a great manicure/pedicure at a great price! Slightly claustrophobic space, but pretty and clean and in a convenient location. One of the most meticulous and well-done manicures I've had.
Pros: clean,friendly staff

I went to get my hair done at TD right before Memorial Day weekend... Alan cut my hair which was great, but what I left there beaming about were the highlights that Beth Ann gave me. I have always gotten blonde highlights - all at nice expensive places, first in DC where I used to live and then to a few nice ones up here in the city. Usually when I tell a stylist that I want to go blonder, they make it too golden or too ashy, and never "blonder". Beth Ann did this beautifully, and almost 3 months later, it has held up very well. It was the perfect shade of baby blonde but it looked very natural. No brassiness and no gray or beige. She is so so nice and easy to talk to during the appointment. Also gave me good tips about products.
Pros: BETH ANN!
Cons: none

If I could give more stars I would. TS is hands down the best kept secret in town. Everyone that works there is down to earth and sweet. I have been to Bumble and Bumble and John Sahag - NO ONE compares. Alan is a hair cutting rock star but totally unassuming. I leave the salon looking like a celebrity. I've been getting my hair done at TS for 9 years now and still go there all the way from Boston with my toddler in tow. I'm completely addicted and you will be too.

Had one of the best cuts of my life (i have obnoxiously fine hair with a very odd wave in it) from Tuula; rebooked 8 weeks later for trim to find she'd left! If only I'd known. Liz did next cut and while it was good, was nothing like the first cut - didn't understand my look or what I needed so I went in with cool Sally Hershberger like layers and came out with a boring, but precise, bob.

I really had an amazing experience at this salon. I have been to allot of the high end nice salons in nyc, but this overshadowed everything in its path. My color and cut came out so beautiful and I have never looked better,,,,,, it was one of my favorite hair experiences!!!!!!! Also the staff couldnt be any nicer......... I HIGHLY RECOMMEND!!!!!!!!!!

Just came from my second visit with Sean and Alan at Tosler Davis. The first time I went in my hair was in need of drastic help. I have been going to high-end salons here in NYC that claim they cut hair based on your lifestyle and shape of your face, that was not the case. I found Tosler Davis on-line and liked the reviews and was impressed with the awards they had received. I am so glad I did. I started with Sean who said the color and highlights needed to be changed and he did. He gave me the most amazing color and highlights I have ever had. Alan came over before Sean started, took one look at my hair and said "I know exactly what I'm going to do". He gave me the most amazing cut ever! Both Sean and Alan were polite, professional, and know their stuff! I got so many compliments I went back again today. I don't know how it's possible but my hair looks even better this time! This is an amazing salon and I will never go anywhere else and always to Sean and Alan! The reviewer that was so critical of Alan must have been in a different salon or was having a really bad day! If you're looking for a new salon you owe to yourself to give them a try!
Pros: Professional, Clean, Friendly Staff, Best Cut and Color Ever
Cons: None

I walked out and have never looked better. Everyone is giving me compliments on my cut and color. Thanks to this site and this salon I have never been looking better. This is the place to go!!!!!!

Good cuts, a little bit pricey, nice space and large windows, friendly staff. Not crazy about NYC salons in general but this one didn't disappoint.
Pros: nice space
Posted 02/28/08
I went to Alan himself after reading a great review in NY Magazine. He and his staff were pleasant and friendly and the salon was very nice but the cut was just "eh" at best - I left not really looking or feeling like I had just paid $110 to have my hair cut.
Pros: Friendly, easy to schedule, convenient location
Cons: Expensive, average at best

Have been going here for three years based on Best of NY rating in NY Magazine. I love it. My husband loves it too because I no longer cry for two days after every hair appointment.
Like others, I've tried the other more expensive salons and have never been so happy. The people who work here are friendly and mellow, you never feel like an intruder. (I feel like the fancy salons cultivate that atmosphere to make the salon seem rarified but it's a turn off. I want to relax while I'm getting my hair done, not worry because my shoes are from last season.) I have long curly thick hair, and I am -always- happy with the way Alan cuts it. He is a master as creating easy to style, se xy [apparently that's an inappropriate word on citysearch??] cuts. I am also -always- happy with the way Sean does my color. Definitely highly recommended.
Pros: Great cuts and color, inexpensive compared with comparable expertise, comfortable vibe.

Based on other reviews, I went to Tosler Davis. Liz was recommended by the receptionist for my thick, wavy, long hair. I am thrilled with the result. My hair is generally difficult to cut and style and I have had many bad haircuts in my life. The cut she gave me is fun, easy to style and is somehow both work-appropriate (I work in a corporate environment) and easily styled in a fun way for a night out. I somehow don't get hat hair anymore after my commute to work. It even still looks good after a night's sleep! Really well done. Highly recommended.

Tosler Davis is my favourite. I've been to every high end salon, Fekkai, Sally Hershberger, Stephen Knoll, you name it. Never have I been so happy with my hair! Sean and Alan are great, a total tag team extraordinaire. The salon is chill, no pressure and very professional. Someone finally got it right

I have been getting my haircut by Liz Lazo and my color by Brian Thompson for a long time - in seperate locations.
I was so ecstatic when Liz joined Tosler Davis!! There is nothing better than having two great services done in one place. Tosler Davis is an easy going salon- no attitude, feel relaxed when I am there.
The staff is friendly and courteous.
Liz's haircuts are always perfect and you will be amazed how great your hair is even when you get home and style it yourself- its about the cut. Brian uses this great "painting" technique that gives me the most natural highlights.
Tosler Davis is the BEST!

I have been seeing Liz for my hair for the past two years. I met her when she used to work at Cutler salon and I am so happy to see her now at Tosler Davis!!! Her haircuts are amazing and the salon is really nice and professional. See ya soon Liz.

I read another review recommending Jermina and it was dead-on. She gave me the best haircut I've ever had. I have never gotten so many compliments on a cut before. I have curly hair that I wear both straight and curly, depending on the weather - I basically let her do what she thought was best and I was extremely happy with the results. At first I thought it seemed too short, but after a couple of days I really appreciated how meticulously she had cut the layers to flatter both when I had it blown out and when i wore it naturally curly.
I go to another salon for color, and I have been to at least five different high-end salons trying to find a good cut/stylist. Although they were all satisfactory, the cuts cost at least $30 more and were not nearly as impressive. I'm glad I can stop looking now!
The salon itself is welcoming and unpretentious and I haven't had difficulty scheduling Saturday appointments (important to me given my work schedule).

Great highlights from Kevin and cut from Tulla. Kevin chose the perfect color, very natural looking and I've gotten tons of compliments from firends. I just called to make another appointment with him though, and he's gone! If anyone knows where he's working now I'd love to know...
Everyone there is very friendly and the atmosphere is laid-back. No snobs or attitude! I also loved that they didn't try to sell me any products.
Pros: Relaxed atmosphere, skilled stylists, decent prices (especially for NYC!)
Cons: None

I work in the beauty industry and have tried lots of other top stylists. Alan Tosler is the best. The only con is he gets extremely booked.
Posted 02/06/07
the T-D guys are great--just went in for my holiday hairdo, and they somehow managed to transform my lackadaisical locks into something chic. i needed a style injection, and i got it without feeling fake fabulous. thanks to some recent press, the owners have gotten a lot busier (ie: alan was booked so i saw tulla instead...luvvvv her, sorry alan) but i still wouldn't go anywhere else downtown. well worth the money, love the location (strategically located to all the stores on lower Fifth Ave for my holiday shopping).
Pros: talented staff, cool space, good value, handy location
Cons: can be booked up, not a huge waiting area
Posted 12/19/06
As someone who has a dogged determination to spend large sums of money on various beauty treatments, I have to say that the haircuts I got here over the period of one year were really not worth it. I was drawn to the place because of what I had heard about Alan's simple, yet stylish haircuts -- I like minimalism. But, maybe my cuts were so minimalist that I didn't even realize that I had gotten one, despite the fact that i had about $180 less than i started with. Thankfully, I finally gave up and admitted that you really can get a better haircut for half the price--who woulda thunk.

Hairstylist to the stars Daryle Bennett styled my hair and I was ready for the red, black and gold carpet! It was an amazing experience. He is awesome!

Tosler Davis is an unscene-y but beautiful place to take care of your hair. I've been a fan of stylist Thea and colorist Bryan for years before either of them landed here, but this is the place I like them best. Thea is great for straight hair: she does beautiful razor cuts (that can be as little or as lotta rock-and-roll as you want) that last for MONTHS ON END. (I always feel guilty, because I only need to see her four times a year.) And Bryan is simply a genius. People always tell me how beautiful my natural hair color is. (He's really, really good with the subtle, grown-up blonde tones, once you get over looking like a tart. But he also made me a beautiful, shining redhead for years, too.) If you need a lot of fuss and drama and attitude when you're getting your hair cut, please, do all us TD fans a favor and go somewhere else.
Pros: Mellow, cool ambiance; talented stylists
Posted 07/19/06
My hair was one length, long, and pretty boring. I brought a picture in to show the stylist and even though the girl in the picture had straight hair, Jermina asked me some questions and got a good idea of what I wanted. She was very focused and quite the perfectionist. She spent a long time cutting my hair! It was $80 and absolutely worth it. Strangers compliment me on my hair! Jermina is incredible!
Pros: excellent stylist, friendly staff
Cons: costly, but worth it
Posted 05/22/06
DO NOt GO HERE. I got such a terrible haircut and I thought the entire experience - the staff, the atmosphere, the look of the salon - left a lot to be desired. With lots of other better places to go there's no excuse. Save yourself the trip.

I was looking for a new salon downtown, and after reading lots of reviews online (wow--they got Best of New York magazine twice!!) decided to give Tosler Davis a try. This salon is known for giving cool, modern cuts and color but still letting you look like you. I had a vague idea of what I wanted, and both the stylist and colorist really helped me find the right look. When I got back to work, everyone wanted to know where I got my hair done.
Pros: low key vibe, cool space
Cons: stylists book up fast
Posted 03/05/06
After 5 hours- no kidding- a total of 2 visits my highlights and cut are making me miserable! Color was actually good. But the cut was not what I wanted- I even had a picture of me that was a year old to go by!! I spent 15 mins talking with the stylist only to get everything I told her not to do. Desk staff was rude. I felt like the least important person there!! They made me wait constantly putting other people first at each step!! Now I am looking like a boy with bad hair!!
Posted 02/23/06
Renee Rawlinson gives a great haircut! I love her, confident and poised. The results were beautiful.
Posted 10/23/05
I recently got a haircut with Renee. I've never recieved so many compliments! I brought in a picture and Renee got right down to business, keeping chat to a minimum and instead concentrating on my hair. I loved the result. It's so easy to style. I'll definitely go back!
Posted 07/20/05
So friendly & nice. You don't feel intimidated by the staff. My hair has never looked better!
