Before I start, I'll remind you, it is my own fault I had to walk 2.5 hours home, not the lady at Metro Bikes.\r

This place is a rip off. They charge a greed tax on their goods and services. (Call and ask how much they charge for a simple flat fix). There are many other bike repair places downtown that do not prey on people that need repairs.

When I decided to write this review I feared perhaps it was just me, but when I saw their general and disastrously low rating, I had more confidence that my experienced matched others. I went to buy my wife a bike and the salesperson was really helpful, insisting that the smaller bike would suit my wife best, and I tended to agree. My wife went there to get it and the salesperson was not there. Instead another tried to sell her a 19" bike that was simply beyond her abilities. They wouldn't even let her try the smaller. She went back the next morning and they wouldn't even sell her the smaller version. We got our money back but a day and half wasted with sheer idiocy can never be replaced.

Pros: There is nothing to recommend this place

Cons: They are disastrous and unsafe

I went in knowing somewhat what I wanted, had called ahead and knew what they had in stock, and needed some help deciding between a few different models. They made the new guy help me, and he was useless. First, assumed that I wanted the cheapest bike in the store (if I wanted a $200 piece of junk I'd go to walmart), and didn't seem to know why anyone would choose one bike over another. He was most concerned with the seat height, color of the frame, and whether they came with toe clips. Comparisons of the brakes, frame materials, geometries, bottom brackets and cranksets, anything important to me actually, were met with blank stares and made up answers (some of which were clearly false).

I understand that some customers are interested only in a really cute, cheap bike, and maybe that being a woman makes me more likely to be one such customer. But honestly, this service was terrible. There were guys who did know some helpful stuff, but they were avoiding helping me. Not rude service, just entirely incompetent.

not to long ago, while riding along just north of the FDR / East River tennis courts my rear tire blew . Stranded, and desperate to find the nearest bike shop location, I contacted metro bikes, 40 mins before closing time and was told, "sorry, but even if you came in now - its way too late for us to fix your tire. We're outta here at 6:30 on the dot."

seriously. too late to help a fellow cyclist with a flat? that's ridiculous.
the folks at Sids (34th and 2nd), two minutes before closing time helped me well after normal business hours in my time of bike desperation as they readjusted my bent front derailleur, changed my tubes/tires... and even went as far to say next time you're in a jam, feel free to come by - anytime.

SIDS: now that's a friendly neighborhood bicycle store.

I hope the owner of metro bikes reads this post and issues a company new mission statement - focusing on serviceability - because until this bike shop changes its ways I'll make sure to spread this event of bad service to every fellow bicyclist in and around NYC.

I think this store/shop has been here forever. They do great repairs/maintenance, prices are decent, service is fast. Weekends when it's nice out are usually packed--try to avoid. Free air hose outside, which is a nice courtesy. Don't buy a bike here, small selection at inflated prices. Everything else about this place is great.
