I have been going to lunch here at least 3 times a month for the past few months. While waiting outside for friends to finish up I noticed the "A" rating in the window. Only what I also noticed was a "Grade Pending" paper conviently on

We returned to this place not because of the spectacular food or service (they weren't), but because it was listed in the great BEST BARS OF NEW YORK book. It is, indeed, an old place with a rich history and lots of wood! BUT, this time it had great service and a menu that seemed improved from what I remember. (Check the handbills for daily specials.)

We had a couple very friendly waitresses, including the granddaughter of the original owner. Dad was downstairs behind the bar. I had the raw littleneck clams (in August!)... and except for some crunchiness in the first one... they were pretty good. The buffalo wings, while not spectacular, did have a nice kick.

The place was really loud (customers and acoustics, not music) at 9:30, but by 10:30 was pretty quiet... upstairs. The bar downstairs was less raucous than it had been earlier, but still hoppin'. All-in-all, I'm glad we came back here! --Drink Club is a roving group of NYC drinkers

At first it wasn't encouraging. We went upstairs to try to find a table, and there were a couple booths free. I call the crew up and a very severe looking waitress (the place must be 100 years old, and she was probably there for the opening), says WE'RE CLOSED UP HERE and flips the OPEN sign to the CLOSED side. So, down the stairs we go. Another severe-looking waitress seats us in the back and moves some furniture to accommodate us. Then things get better. The bar food is standard, clam strips instead of calamari, but from the burgers to the buffalo wings, everything else is the same as anywhere. Gil says the burgers were excellent. The beer list was decent. They serve pitchers of all the tap beer, EXCEPT Guinness for some reason. The bar itself is beautiful. Very old New York from the pictures and letters on the wall to the massive wood bar and tables. The atmosphere is not super friendly, but if you byog (bring your own group), you'll enjoy the place for the pure old New York feel. --Drink Club NYC is a roving group of NYC drinkers

Cold draft, good burger, warm atmosphere. What else do you need?

Anyone who doesn't get the Old Town, just doesn't get it. Some people get it, some people never will. I'm glad most of the people in Old Town get it.

Wish more places were still around like this. Great burgers. Awesome Hotdogs. Cold Beer.

Was just in there last week for our annual Holiday pub crawl of old bars. Like the year before, the crawl stopped at the Old Town b/c there's not much motivation to leave there. Place looks great around Christmas. keep it old, don't change a thing.

I have noticed on a few visits to New York that the Old Town Bar is not as busy as the bars that are in the same area. Heres why:
Poor Service-Bartenders who could care less if you were there
Dirty Place-I love the fact that it is historic, but clean the place up for Gods sake-the mirrors are disgusting
Insulting-a sign is posted on the mirror behind the bar telling guests because they buy a drink it does not give them the right to be a bore. The sign I assume is supposed to be funny as it refers to the Boer war, but it is just insulting
The Prices-where do they get off charging the prices for beer they do?

Apparently this place is historic having been open over 100 years. A lot of the original dumbwaiter. It has been in a lot of movies as well. I didn't notice anything special about it when I went there other then the tons of sailors there during fleet week. A sailor was going to buy me a drink (well ok he was my husband - but he is still a sailor!) and the bartender who had originally seemed annoyed at all the sailors gave us the bill for free. My drink was ok. Nothing special. I would go back here so I could check out the original pressed tin ceilings since I did not notice them when I was there!

A comfortable place that makes anyone feel at home in New York.

When you walk in, there is a warm glow & chatter at the bar that engulfs you. You'll meet people from all walks of life at the old town. It's a hundred year old meltingpot of what made New York so great. An unprentious place where anyone to can bond with their neighbot at the bar over a pint & burger.

I like Saturday & Sunday afternoon when the sun pours in the glass front doors & you can grab a pint & burger & read the newspaper without the crowds. Start a conversation with the barman if you can, if anything you learn more from an old barman in new york than you can learn in any newspaper.

Had a weird experience here - got up to leave, couldn't find my jacket. After a minute it was located, on the other side of the bar from where I left it. While I was outside saying good night to my friends, the bartender came out and asked me why I had accused them of stealing it. While I was explaining I had done no such thing, he physically grabbed a phone out of the hands of my friend who was trying to use it. Kind of unfortunate, because I've been going a couple times a year for the last 10 years. There's a line between friendly neighborhood bar and divey bar where you need to watch your step.

... with people you haven't seen in ages. i always come here to chat with old friends and find it's the perfect place for it. service is great, food is affordable, nice atmosphere. never feel rushed. sometimes it's a bit packed, but it's worth the wait. i recommend the mac & cheese and fries over the burgers.

Old Town has been in lots of movies, so it looks familiar. It has real memorabilia and great prices--friendly staff, and well worth going off the beaten path to see.

I don't get the hype. This place is just your average bar. It's not "awful" and it's not "awesome". I would not recommend it either to locals or out of towners, however, if I was 1 block away an in the mood for a quick bite and a quick beer - sure, I might stop in. But there is NO WAY IN HECK that these are "The BEST Burgers in NYC". (At least - I sure hope these aren't the best burgers in NYC because that would be an embaressment.) They are: "The most AVERAGE BURGERS" in NYC.

The bar is great - dark wood, variety of beers on tap, and friendly service - but don't count on buy-backs. However, although this place is known for its burgers, they were half the size, almost twice the price, and not nearly as good as Corner Bistro - there's no comparison.

the setting is completely w/o pretense & charmingly worn-down yet preserved. our waitress was friendly. believe the hype about the burgers: they're one of the best. they're on the smaller side compared to some others & the flavor is packed in there! the fries are the real thing, too. if all this weren't enough, the prices are very low. get there before 7pm on a weeknight or else wait in line.

old fashioned, really great bar. my favorite place to meet friends for a drink. in my opinion the best burger in town as well. let all the sucker tourists and bridge and tunnel folk pack into corner bistro. I'll take old town any day of the week.

Great place for a burger and a brew. Those seeking the latest fusion of food and drink, please look elsewhere. This place is not for you. It is what it is, a dark, old, classy bar.

Old Town really is OLD. The bar food is ok for a bar. However, the service was bad because they would not let my group eat at the bar. You can probably save $1/drink by going here. Otherwise, leave the old and bring in the new.

When I crave a burger, I head to Old Town. It's a bit old and worn inside, but that just adds to the character of the place. Besides the burger, the turkey reuben is delicious!
