I have read many negative reviews about this store (you can view them on Citysearch and Yelp). The owner is an arrogant jerk. He has altercations with customers on a frequent basis.

This place is a total rip off. Worst yet is the way the staff (including the owner who has been referred to in many previous reviews as "the black guy with the earing") acts like they are doing you a favor selling you a bunch of overpriced garbage.

My first and only experience with this store went like this: I asked the black guy with the earring (who I later discovered was the owner) for advice on products for my new aquarium. He pushed a whole bunch of expensive supplies on me. I later discovered that I did not need ANY of them (and they would actually HARM my fish). I returned the next day and requested a refund. He was rude, aggressive and arrogant. He cursed at me and told me that he did not need my business. I have read many reviews like this since this altercation but I wish I had done more research beforehand.

Called to get pricing and was told they would not give prices over the phone and I will have to come in. I live kind of far so it would be a hassle! rude manner
I agree the staff isn't friendly. Their stock is okay not great if you want to goto a great store goto

PACIFIC AQUARIUM, unfortunately they are even further away from me but worth it. Great selection of fish and the staff is really great, esp. the two younger guys that work there. Awesome planted tank display too!

don't support NEW WORLD

I was a very frequent customer of this store for many years, it is pricey, but the fish are decently kept, compared to Petco. The attitudes and service from the two guys who worked at the cash register; one skinny black with earring and the other heavyset hispanic-looking, left a lot to be desired. They were usually arrogant, not very helpful, sometimes bordering rude and always gave the impression that they were doing a favor assisting you, any advise was fairly useless anyway because they are not very knowledgeable. I overlooked this because it was convenient on my way home to quickly stop in and get supplies for my salt water aquariums and I didn't have much dealings with them. The other workers who attended to the live stuff in the aquariums in the back were always quite helpful and friendly, and took extra effort in bagging the fish and other live purchaces. As you all know, saltwater is an expensive hobby, and I literally spent thousands of dollars over the years on equipment, supplies and fish.
Recently I purchased a $70 piece of equipment recommended by the skinny black guy and was very unhappy with it. I returned it, my first return ever at this store, the following day for a store credit but he refused to take it back stating that it was opened and cannot be resold. I mentioned to him that I have been a loyal customer for many years - he knew me very well - and that if this is how they treat valued customers, then I will be doing business elsewhere. You can guess the rest ... it sucked - I am out $70 and stuck with a useless device which ironically did not!!
I found another Aquarium store at 522 West 37St which comes highly recommended which I will be checking out soon ......

Pros: Not many dead fish

Cons: Pricey

A large ego and small amount of real aqua-knowledge makes the sales staff at this place quite useless and somewhat dislikeable. I have purchased a lot of gear from this store (filters, food, driftwood, plants - hundreds of dollars worth) and yet the dude in there is always rude to me. Not a good look. Especially when you consider that there are several other quality aquarium stores in the city where one can find not only a better selection of stock and nicer prices, but also much kinder and more knowledgeable sales staff. Personally I would patronise somewhere that has respect for their customers, and takes some pride in offering customers the knowledge and courtesy they deserve.

Everyone thinks this place is the bees knees, but it really isn't that spectacular at all. Sure, they have a selection that encompasses more than the bread and butter staples, but that should be expected from any mom and pop aquarium store. I have to admit that they are very well stocked with equipment, and if you really need a particular item immediately, they will probably have it. That comes at a price though, and it's a bit too rich for me. If you are comfortable paying 16 bucks for a 4 dollar anubias or 45 bucks for a 12 dollar light bulb, then New World is definitely for you.

On a side note, the staff really isn't as pleasant as other reviewers would make it seem. One of the guys up front is very friendly, but the other one isn't so much at all. The back appears to be staffed only with surly hipsters who help only begrudgingly.

I just have to say that NWA is absolutely awesome. The customer service doesn't get any better. I've been doing business with this company for over 12 years and I have never received anything but A+++ service from everyone that works there. They carry the best quality selection in the city. I absolutly recommend this store if you are serious about fish keeping.

Although this is clearly a store for serious enthusiasts, the staff are equally keen to help absolute beginners like myself.
Since my first visit 2 months ago I must have been back to the store over 10 times, sometimes with really dumb questions, and the staff are unfailingly patient and helpful.
Plus its managed by a Brit named Sureshan so I can go in and talk football (soccer) to my heart's content.
Go in there for his friendly and knowledgable service - just remember to tell him his team (Spurs) are rubbish.

Oh, and they have a very cool cat called Axl. Yep, a cat in a fish store.

Highly recommended.

I purchased a nano-cube here in August, after a long battle with mail-order companies, and have been coming back sometimes several times a week - they never seem to stop getting new stock! The best saltwater selection around, plus staff that knows the importance of taking your time with a reef tank - Most stores would have sold me anything I asked about, but these guys would rather keep the fish than sell me a problem - something I learned when I insisted on having a flame angel, even though they said my tank was to small, my stubborness cost me 70 bucks and, sadly, the fish it's life. Shop these guys especially on tues and thurs when the new fish have had time to calm down. A+

When I confronted the black sales clerk with ear ring his rude behavior towards the customers he turned at me and yelled: "WHAT ARE YOU? A F*GGOT J*W? I said ?What?? He came at me with his chest out and pushed at me. Threatening to beat me up. Scared, I quickly left the store, as he pushed at me from behind yeling "WHY DON'T YOU RAM A STEEL ROD UP YOUR * SS YOU F*GGOT J*W! He followed me out in the street and kept yelling profanities until I had turned the corner.

New world aquarium is a great place to go for all of your aquarium fish and supply needs. They have a number of different types of marine fish and have a selection that cannot be beat in terms of freshwater fish and plants as well as reef systems. The staff is very friendly and knows a lot about the products that they are selling.

The store is very good in salt water selection for the salt water hobbyist. The staff in knowledgeable and helpful. Being a store in midtown NY, the prices are a bit more than chain stores. They use high quality metal halide lights which are the best and most expensive therefore reflecting on the high quality of livestock. There is a small selection of fresh water fish but the salt water is one of the best in the city.

PROS: Quality livestock
CONS: Pricey

I had a very positive experience every time I'm new to this hobby and the staff has been completely helpful. Yes, its a little pricer than other stores, but the quality of fish is far superior. If you are a fishkeeper, don't EVER buy your fish at Petco.(contaminated & overstocked tanks) Do yourself a favor a spend a little more and get a healthy fish. I'd rather spend more on a fish here and get all of the advice and expertise along with it - than go to Petco and get a sick fish and advice from a kid working after school that knows nothing about saltwater fish. The guy who works here Taso, is great ask for him. I picked out some fish and he pointed out why the ones I choose were not the best choices. The fish that I ended up with are all doing well.

PROS: Expert Staff, Healthy Fish

Great and rare selection of African Cichlids from Lakes Tanganyika and Malawi. Rather impressed by their selection of Synodontis cats. Sure, they are a bit pricey, but beats the hassles of mail ordering. Nice selection of fancy plecos too. Highly recommend.

While not being perfect (I've had a mix-up or two with them), this is easily the finest aquarium store in the 5 boroughs, and I've been to most of 'em. I'm quite experienced with aquariums and VERY picky, that's why I've taken the time to visit most of the aquariums in the city. This store has a huge selection of very healthy fish, a very knowledgeable staff, and high quality aquarium supplies. Though they stock less equipment than, say, Petco, they only stock the best equipment, not the cheap junk you can get at discount pet shops. Even though the sales staff tend to be arrogant and obnoxious, I keep coming back here. It's the ONLY place in NYC that I want to buy fish. The tanks are the cleanest I've ever seen in the city and I've been to just about every aquarium in NYC. So much cleaner than Petco or Petland where you will almost certainly get diseased fish. So, even though the staff are generally A-Holes, this store is still HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! I mean really, do you get good service at Petco? Or Petland? I've never gotten good service there, either. That's why I keep coming here. The service at New World is no better or worse than the poor service you get at Petco, but the quality of EVERYTHING is soooo much better. Just be sure you know what you are buying. If you buy something and there is a problem with it, they will almost certainly not give you a refund or store credit. I don't generally buy equipment here, but I almost always buy my fish here.
