This little coffee shop has great beverages and yummy food. I love their hot chocolate. They also do catering for meetings and lunches, and some of their sandwiches are delicious. Especially the bread. A cute and trendy place to grab a bite or a drink!

I come here all the time with my coworker to brainstorm and, though it's really loud when it gets busy, you manage to be in your own world here. The oatmeal cookies are epic, and, ladies, go on a Monday; the busboys that work that day are always hot.

At first I was unimpressed. The food is nothing special, and becomes less so with the stale potato chips they serve it with. The music was way too loud and annoying- like Dave Matthews Band annoying. The people who work there are obnoxious, as if they have somewhere better to be- like I don't know WORK. And then all of a sudden-C0ckR0@ch falls on my table. On the table....
And when I tell the owner- he could care less. In fact he tells me to go eat somewhere else next time if I have a problem. Obviously I am NEVER eating there again.

I work 6pm to 6am and have been looking for a cool place to take a break. I finally found it! Went in last night at about 10:30. Great cup of Cappucino, very reasonably priced, friendly staff. Sat in open front and watched the crowd walk by. I am definitely going back tonight for my break!

This review is on the Univeristy Place location. Food is excellent, got the brunch breakfast special with eggs which was really good. Prices are reasonable. Coffee/Teas are good. Great little brunch spot to try. The only down side is that it's cash only.

Gray Dog is one of my favorite low-key places in the Village. I try to get something new every time I go there, and it is always delicious. Their turkey burger is perfection and they have great breakfast food too. Everyone has always been nice and the service fast. My only complaints are the weekend insanity with long lines and the noise level. But for the food...it's totally worth it.

Oh man how I love this place. On one lunch break I was searching for some healthy food that wouldn't cost me over $10 and then I stepped into this place. For 7 bucks I got a delicious bowl of granola, yogurt, fresh berries and bananas with an Iced coffee I spent $9.25 and was in heaven. You place your order to the possibly nicest staff in the city and then choose which seat is best to either people watch in the front or get cozy in the back, either way youll enjoy the view. When your food is ready, very quickly at that, the staff calls your name and brings it to you. Grey Dog's might just be the best lunch spot in the whole beautiful city.

But what i do know is this place has the most delicious, hearty sandwiches i have ever tasted. My boyfriend and i absolutely looooooooove them. We practically order every weekend.

I read so many great reviews of this place that I chose Grey's as the brunch spot w/ several of my friends. What a mistake. It was super crowded (and after tasting the food, I can't imagine why). I happened to be 20 min late, which is how long it took my friends to get a seat, squeezed in on one of those long communal tables. The food we tried: iced coffee (standard issue, decent), egg and cheese on croissant (egg was rubbery) some sort of tuna wrap (real tuna, not out of a can) which was very bland, cheese fries (AWFUL! they literally microwaved slices of american cheese on the fries, so by the time they got to us it was one gelled piece), cookie (despite its good looks, was dry and hard). Frozen mocha was good. I think there was a decent omelette amongst us. The cheapest thing was the egg and cheese, and at $4.50, no bargain. Definetly not a place to linger, and in my opinion, not a place to return to, either.

I went on a Sunday around 11am. There is a long line. When it's not out the door, it'll take about 20 minutes to get to the front. After placing my order, I carried my beverage, water, silverware, syrup, salt, pepper, ketchup, napkins, etc to an empty table. This is quite a task since the place is packed, there's hardly any room to move. I got myself situated at a table only to realize the coffee (which is good coffee) is lukewarm. Then someone called my name into the crowd and served me my food. My interaction with a restaurant worker is over at this point . There is no coffee refill or waiter/waitress service. The food itself is also cold. I ordered a cold dry french toast that tasted very eggy and some cold home fries, which would have been tasty if warm. Overall for the price, there are tons of more comfortable brunch places in the neighborhood. If you're going to go for the first time, I think it helps to know there is no service, you'll be carrying your coffee and utensils and it's extremely crowded.

This is a pretty standard American restaurant. They do not really do anything special with the food (burgers, salads, sandwiches, etc.) but the service is outstanding. I have a tendency to be very picky when I order, but this place never makes me feel bad about it. They also always get my order right and the food always comes very quickly.

Room temperature toast, according to the cranky snob owner, is the way they serve it. He actually said that! "We do the best we can", he said. So when we asked for warm toast , they put some very nice cold toasted bread through the toaster again and we got slightly charred but warm toast. It makes sense the toast is cold, because it took them 15 minutes to make two eggs over medium (broke the yolks, overcooked the eggs) with four other people in the cafe. Luckily it was all set off by cold plates and dried-up home fries. Nice ingredients, horrible delivery. Best thing in there is the small dogs with their owners.

I live in LA and always make sure to visit Grey Dogs when I'm in NY. It is cozy and has great food for great rpices. The employees are quick, but careful. They are also polite and helpful. Seating is tight, but hey, it's NY! Beware of the occasional egghead trying to cut in line or save a table out of order. The pea soup is wonderful as is the olive bread.

Just moved here from Northern California. Grey Dog is just what the doctor ordered. Self serve on the easy stuff. But they deliver your order to the table. You get your own tools and napkins, water, etc...
The music is great. They have it going on.

It is truly amazing how wonderful this coffee shop is! The coffee and the service is wonderful. I have to admit, they have the best muffins I have ever had - HONEST!!! Everytime I go there, there is a short line, but the waitstaff moves the line very quickly without leaving you feel like cattle (how do they do that??).

My fav AM purchase is a coffee and muffin, and believe it or not it costs 1/2 (I mean 1/2!) the price of the same from Starbucks. I think they do all of the baking on premise, which would explain how yummy everything is (and why the muffins actually have the crispy (not soggy) top).

The patrons of Grey Dog are always very hip looking, but not pretentious. I have heard that evenings are wonderful and their wine list is very respectable.

I was a regular grey dog customer and heres the deal: The coffee is excellent, the breads and baked goods are tasty. They specialize in sandwiches with cartoonishly thick break, but they also have other great food. The space is a welcoming oasis from Manhattan stress. HOWEVER: seating is limited and the line is slow. Their delivery is spotty, so expect your order to be late, incomplete or missing key ingredients (like meat). The staff is pretty cliquish - effusively friendly to minor celebrities but aloof to regular folk. For example, after five years of regular patronage, no one, not the owner, none of the staff, ever even asked my name. On the other hand, the guy with the bagel cart asked my name after about a week. I guess he wanted my business and thought it was important to know his customers. I dont think Grey Dog does.

I found the Grey Dog soon after I moved to New York and loved it for their iced coffee and atmosphere. You can bring your dog in to have lunch with you, providing it doesn't freak out everyone else's dog that's there eating with them. The sandwiches are HUGE and super tasty. they have different types of bread for the bread snob in you. At night Grey Dog becomes a great place for a quiet intimate dinner, particularly in the summer when they have the front doors thrown open and you can sit with a glass of their great sangria and enjoy a light well-crafted dinner.

I went here for breakfast with my mom and two friends. We all really enjoyed our breakfast, which was homey fare such as pancakes, muffins, and granola. They have a really nice mixture of healthy options that sound delicious and regular fare. I wish I could have eaten lunch there, the sandwhies and other options sounded so good. It is very tight and a bit cramped, but to me it sets a certain ambiance.

If you're in this area of town and in need of a cup of coffee, definately stop by. The coffee prices are very reasonable (I didn't try the food). More tables than most of NYC's small coffee shops as well. Go here instead of your local Starbucks!

It gets way too crowded sometimes, but the food is good. And the food is very reasonably priced. Gets a tad cramped on weekends and I have just given up a number of times when I walked in for breakfast. BUT..the food and coffee are good.
Dogs are no longer allowed in. Big loss to the local dog owners who used to flock there. Sigh.

reading about rave reviews of grey dog's coffee prompted me to trek to the west village. the crowd was young and hip. the environment was hustle bustle busy, but mostly due to the self-service. the seating is cramped and you are forced to eavesdrop to the table beside you. the best cup of coffee is BITTER... remember to ask for lots of cream.

With so many things going right, it's hard to imagine that this west village coffeehouse can possibly do anything wrong. The Grey Dog offers a neighborhood sense of familiarity with a friendly and attractive staff. The fun art on the walls and delicious menu keeps this place a must-see. Don't skip out on either caffeinated or alcoholic beverages, as both here are excellent. The seared tuna salad is simply divine.

CRAMPY PLACE! I WAS FUSTRATED BY THE TIME I CHECKED OUT. IT'S DARK AND MURKY-LIKE. THE MUFFINS ARE GREAT BUT THE COFFEE GOTTA GO! YOU WILL SEE THAT THE CROWD IS ANNOYINGLY LOUD!

Pros: MUFFINS

Cons: CROWDED, DARK, NO SEATS!

.

I go to Grey Dog all the time, and love the food and the coffee. It can get a bit expensive at times-you pay for the atmosphere. The staff is friendly and the music is cool too. Can be a bit slow during busy lunch time.

the coffee HAS changed. oily almost. It used to be described by shaking a clenched fist on a contracted bicep. Now, it's still this nice dark color, but it's frail. The Irish Oatmeal with fresh fruit still rocks my breakfast world, and the soup and half sandwich is a bargain at twice the price. The banana "bread" is still yummy, but no more Herculean coffee to dip it in anymore. Come back 1999 roast, we miss you!

Pros: Breakfast, Daily Soups, bitchin' music

Cons: crowded (at times), loud (when crowded)

I'm not sure what it is, but something has changed with the coffee. I really, really, really want to like this place, but I stopped going here about a year ago when the coffee started taking on a strange taste.

Live and work nearby...have tried over and over to enjoy coffee, but no matter time of day it's burned/foul/ick. Food is almost always good, though, although bread for sandwiches has good days and a bad (crust to break a few teeth)
