.

Our party of 4 adults went on 8/7/10. We arrived at 7:30 p.m. Though it was a Saturday night, of the approximately 15 tables only 8 were occupied at any time. Service was terrible. It took fully an hour to receive our dinner. It took 20 minutes for our order to be taken, then another 15 before the server came out to say one item could not be made because they were out of the major ingredient, then another 25 before food arrived. When the food did arrive, two side dishes were missing from two diners' meals. Though this was pointed out, our server still forgot to bring the second diner's side and we had to summon another server to help (she did). Though some of the food was a little unusual and the food was, in general, good (watch out for the salty gravy if you are ordering the roast beef), the experience was definitely colored by the poor service. Would not go back (especially since, the following morning, we went to a place called Alton's that had similar food--though not the unusual combinations in a quaint diner car--where service was extremely fast and good, with tasty food. Thumbs down on Lake Effect Diner (after this disappointment, we are reconsidering our plan to try other Guy Fieri-recommended DDDs).

I've been going here since shortly after they opened, and have always been very pleased with the food, service, and diner atmosphere. They're a very traditional "railway car" diner (now mounted on a permanent foundation, with a large attached kitchen), with a typical diner fare menu -- burgers/sandwiches, omelets, milkshakes, coffee, the usual "garbage plate" (which I haven't been hungry enough to try yet). The stuffed potato pancakes are phenomenal, and the desserts are top-notch. The fact that they're open 24/7 caps off an overall great experience that both out-of-town friends and natives alike have shared in and enjoyed.

PROS: 24/7 availability, good coffee, stuffed potato pancakes
CONS: a couple of my favorite waitresses graduated this semester :-(
