I've been dining at this cozy bistro for many years. Sadly, since the change in ownership and management recently, it seems to be in a downward spiral.

Don't even think of leaving a message or email for John Pardo to book a reservation.

Love Paella Night! The live guitarist made the evening memorable. Very authentic and well prepared food. No regrets!

We have been dining at Alouette for least five years, once or twice a year. Last night we noticed a steep decline in the quality of the food. In a party of four one person's food was served almost cold. The skate, a staple of French

Just returned from dinner with family for New Year's Eve: Steak with peppercorn sauce and pomme frites was tough, not easy to chew and was returned twice as the chef wasn't able to cook the steak medium. It clearly was rare not only once

I loved this little cafe when I lived on the Upper West Side. They had great croissants and really good bread too.

The service at Alouette is a good as it gets, I felt completely spoiled. The drinks were amazing, and the food is excellent - especially the homemade apple tart - what a great way to end a great night there.

This is a great place to have a delicious meal served in a relaxed setting. The service is top-rate and when the French doors are open in the front it is very romantic. My favorite dish is the seafood pot-au-feau. It is similar to a bouillabaisse but not as heavy, and the fenugreek they add to it makes it smell divine. They also have an early prix-fixe menu at $25 with great choices. I can't say enough about this restaurant. I love it.

I have been to this restaurant many times for dinner or for a snack and I am never disappointed. It has a really intimate atmosphere and the food is great. I highly recommend the prix fixe in the early evening if you can catch it. It is a total bargain for what you get.

I was looking for a good place to go on a date before seeing a movie. Thanks to you crazy citysearchers. I enjoyed a tasty, light, expensive meal at Aloutte. Its always nice to find a place on the West Side that is not too hip for its own good. we got there at 730 and it was pretty empty, but filled up by the time we left at 9. I liked every food. Service was just OK.

I don't usually write reviews of restaurants but I think this little place is really great. It's like entering a portal to Paris - but without the scary Euro prices. The food is delicious and the portions are quite sizable, and the service is very good and not pretentious or stuffy either.

If you want to go to a nice casual restaurant with great food at reasonable prices this is your best bet in this neighborhood. The chicken there might be the best I've ever had. And the desserts are absolutely heavenly.

Charming, relaxed, friendly, reliable, and always delicious fare. Regular menu is superb. Specials better. Make a reservation - the restaurant is frequently filled to capacity. Tables are a little close but you will soon forget the local geography as you settle in to a little piece of France.

We eat at Alouette regularly because my mother-in-law lives in the neighborhood. We have always enjoyed the well-prepared food and good service and feel like we are in a cozy bistro in France when we dine here. We especially like the wine list and the great selection of French bordeauxs. Recently we celebrated my mother-in-law's 90th birthday at Alouette with 26 guests and Chantal and her staff did all they could to make the occasion perfect. Everyone had a wonderful time, the food was superb, and the restaurant baked a lovely birthday cake. We look forward to returning for many more wonderful dining experiences!

We just wanted to take this moment to thank Chantal Gin, owner of Alouette, for the wonderful experience we had at this restaurant for our wedding last night. Her personal touch and attention meant so much to us and it made the entire process effortless. The food was spectacular, the room looked beautiful and the staff was exceptional. Our guests are still raving about the evening. The waitstaff was so attentive and accommodating, and they gave special attention to the children, which was so wonderful. We especially appreciated the staff rushing to display our cake since it was delivered so late by our baker.

We would recommend this restaurant to anyone who wants to celebrate a special event.

After reading these mixed reviews on citysearch, I was slightly uncertain about Alouette. A quick scan of the menu revealed dumbed down french food, which was fine with us. They seated us quickly on a Thursday night. The wine we ordered was pretty decent, though expensive ($7 a glass). My friend was disappointed that there weren't more half bottle options. We split an escargot and ordered a hanger steak and salmon, which both seemed to be popular dishes. Let's just say that EVERYTHING WAS WATERY AND BLAND. I expected thick, FLAVORFUL sauces characteristic of French cuisine. The food was just...bad. My salmon was drowned in a faux Taiwanese bok choy broth and even my friend's steak seemed watery (and no it was not moist in a good way). We actually thought they boiled the steak. When the bill came, we were shocked. $70 for bad food? We were kicking ourselves as we paid the bill...we should have went to Max Soha (great little Italian place on 122nd and Amsterdam). So unless you're looking for questionable food, don't go to Alouette.

I have been frequenting alouette for years now and it is still as good as ever. The entire menu is excellent and reasonably priced, the service attentive and friendly, and the decor is charming. It is the best restaurant in the neighborhood by far. Just the other day I ordered a rather expensive bottle of wine and, unfortunately, it did not taste right to me. I let the waiter know and without any problem we were served another one. I know this is customary to do but the fashion in which they did it was commendable. It was just another example of the quality of restaurant this is. I hope it stays around a long time.

I was contemplating writing about my experience but knew I had to when I saw the previous reviewer had the EXACT SAME EXPERIENCE. My husband and I ordered a 28-dollar HALF BOTTLE (read: not cheap) of bordeaux. I tasted it, thought it was fine, but immediately the two of us noticed a strange metallic aftertaste and stopped drinking the wine. I informed my server who took it to the owner/manager woman. The woman *SMELLED* the bottle, did not taste it, and had the server tell us there was nothing wrong with the wine, we just needed to let it breathe. Who refuses to take back bad wine? Apparently Alouette does it regularly. We left the wine untouched in our glasses and the bottle. We gave them the benefit of the doubt and thought surely they would not charge us for wine we tried to send back and did not drink. No--they charged us for the bottle. Because we are CLASSY people we decided not to make a scene about it, since we were seated at the banquette close to other diners trying to enjoy their dinners. Again because we are CLASSY we still tipped the server normally because it wasn't her fault about the wine. But we left a note on the receipt and are leaving another note here--I have NEVER had an experience like that in my life. We'll never go back and will encourage others to stay away. Was that worth the $14 profit you made on the wine, Alouette?

food wasn't even good.below average.and the service was even worse.unheard of in NYC. our wine was corked.not only the smell and the color but the obvious moldy defected cork.the typical french owner was unbearably arrogant. insisting that nothing wrong with the wine. She think everybody is stupid enough to drink that corked wine???she should learn that 6% of wine has corkage problem and that is a part of the business. Also if the food is not excetional, they should try to improve their service.... Don't go there, there are so many nice restyaurents with good food and service in new yorkcity! very bad experience...I won't go back ever again!

Alouette lost our reservation and called my wife a liar when she insisted we made one. We walked out. The rudest treatment I've ever experienced in NYC. We've eaten there before and it was ok.

I've been to Alouette twice and I had the Prix fixe dinner each time. For about $20, I got an appetizer, main and dessert. Unheard of for French cuisine! The ambience is very romantic and I was not disappointed with the food. I would definitely go back.

The service is very good, gracious and just attentive enough. The space is simple, predictable, familiar and very bistro. No pretentions, which is very welcome. The food, however, fails. Alouette churns out some of the warhorses of bistro-fare, and attempts a few side-steps as well, which is admirable, but there is something in the execution and ingredients that makes a grilled steak underwhelming, the gaufrettes bland, the escargots timid and hidden, the duck like the steak, the deserts bland and unispired. Shame, they could easily do better. Prices are very reasonable for an UWS bistro, and the space is ready for some fine cooking, but you can easily find much better fare elsewhere.

Bland. That describes the place, and the food. we were seated in the 2nd floor dining room which lacks character and warmth. First floor dining room is not much of a cozy or warm place but definitely better than the 2nd floor area. Service was ok. We had a reservation for 8:30 and were seated promptly. The food was the biggest disappointment. The duck and sirloin steak were well, bland. The duck dish was even cold. peolple sitting at the nearby table seemed happy with their food I should add. By the way, at the end of the night we noticed they had forgotten to being us bread etc at the begining. The only good thing we had was a $38 Point noir from central coast. The food was such a disappointment.

if you are ever in the area - definitely go for this place... we were looking to eat somewhere before a concert at Smoke on Tuesday night when we found this little bistro-type french outfit.

have absolutely nothing negative to say - the service was friendly and quick (although our waiter stumbled on specials and had to repeat them again); the prices are very-very reasonable (the most expensive main course on the menu - $22); good selection of wines (including some excellent inexpensive choices); and the food was... Ogh... beyond good. Honestly, i don't remember the last time I had such a great dinner at a french restaurant...

In short, - go for it, - you won't be disappointed.

Alouette is the type of restaurant New York needs more of. The food is very good. Some of it is standard bistro fare well executed. However, the chef is not afraid go beyond the standard items and demonstrate his creativity. On top of that add the very nice people own the restaurant and you have a winning combination. Some of the other reviews have mentioned attitude from the servers. I certainly have never had that experience. I've introduced several friends to this restaurant and they all seem to be quite fond of it as well. Highly recommended.
