We always have to stop by HopKee when in NYC. Its in Chinatown a little cozy place. The food is awesome! I always order the sweet and sour chicken which is always great. The amount of food which is given is generous, good enough for dinner

This place is Chinatown's diner. Saucy Cantonese dishes found here. Open late and solid greasy-spoon fare. As a result, it's become something of a tourist trap and you will get a high dose of sodium in your meal, but you know it will hit the spot. Among Chinatown folks, they are famous for their snails / "escargot." I am always impressed when I see non-Asians enjoying this dish too.

Hop Kee is one of the oldest Cantonese restaurants in Chinatown. It is full of history and many famous people have dined here.

The food is quite good. They have two versions of menus. One is for Chinese people and the other is a modified version for non-Chinese. I personally think the menu is lacking and the American menu is quite a sellout. Overall though, I really like their beef chow fun. However, I was not so thrilled with the service or the sanitary condition of this restaurants.

Pros: NOTHING

Cons: DIRTY, NASTY SERVICE

An old stand-by that is not as good as it used to be, but still a Chinatown tradition and as others have said, if you know what to get, you will be very, very happy!

My family and freinds go to Hop Kee whenever we are in Chinatown. The food is authentic and very well prepared. The lobster here is great, along with the fried flounder. 10 of my freinds and I just went there and got 8 different dishes that all were great- clams in black bean sauce is a must! The service is very efficient. The waiters here are very freindly and always available to serve you. If you go to Chinatown you must experience one the best restaurants there. You will not regret it!!!

You could get lost ina sea of mediocre food here, but if you know what to order you think you're in heaven.

I recommend:
clams cantonese style
crabs cantonese style
and any of the noodle dishes

The flourescent lights and old furniture make the place feel like a dump, but as we all know, good food can be found in hole-in-the-wall restaurants. Hop Kee is one of them.

Hop Kee has amazing Chinese food and is conveniently located in Chinatown by other cute little stores. The service is quick, friendly, and efficient.

I recommend the Wonton soup, snails, fried fish, and pan-fried noodles. They are fabulous to the taste!

This place is not too bad, it used to be really good. The fried squid is sometimes too salty, but its really good on the good days. The hot chili sauce is good. Watch out for the hot tea, it will keep you up at night, lots lots of caffeine. The beef cow fun is pretty good. The glazed share rims are the bomb. The service is pretty bad.

I am a 30+ year patron here at this dirty ,dingy, loud, filthy bathroom, simple decor, cash only basement hole in the wall ! And the simple truth be told ....I would not like it any other way. ...It is the most authentic Cantonese food you will ever eat ! The atmosphere just adds to the authenticity. It Makes you feel like you are in China. And for all you critics , I did not come here to sit in the dirty bathroom .....I come for the food. If you like you can run back up the stairs and p down along that little narrow side street. When ever I'm back in town from Arizona...It's my first stop ,at any hour ! It is a religious experience. We start off with steamed dumplings and a nice wanton/egg drop mix, then onto chinese steak/broccoli , peking pork chops , spicy beef chow fun,and salted squid w/hot pepper...sometimes for dessert ....we order more dumplings and another plate of squid ! Can't help it ....the taste is so outrageous ! I think you still can bring your own wine ! To all you yuppy & wanna be cultured conesures.....Stay Home , You'll make the wait and lines shorter .This place is to real for you anyway, prices are low and they don't build pyarmids out of sweet potato fries. I come from a large Italian family in which food is life ! We live to eat ! We Know good food ! I grew up In NY and ate here at least once a month . Afterwards we would walk down the block to go play "Tic Tac Toe" with the chicken. If anyone remembers that arcade, Darn Chicken always won ! I don't know if it's still there ! My opinion : There isn't anything that can compare ! Enjoy

I've dined at Hop Kee about 6 times over a 20 year period. When my family dined there this week, the food was very bland. We ordered the cashew chicken and the Chinese crispy chicken. There was no flavor to either of them. The waiter did provide hot sause, but that still could not rescue the flavor nor could adding salt. Years ago the place was much better. The best way to describe the atmosphere and attitude is indifferent. The service was OK, but the uniforms were the same as 20 years ago and some looked very faded and weathered. The floors looked a little old and appeared to not have been recently cleaned. The bathroom also seemed that way. The low rating is because there are thousands of great restaurants to choose from in New York and the bar should be raised higher.

I've been to Hop Kee's for about 30 years now! The food is forever amazing! My faves are the shrimp w/ walnuts, fried or peking porkchops and flounder with veggies. The service is wonderful, waiters are friendly, funny and attentive. The bathroom is not that bad. I grew up in Chinatown and from all the other rest I go to, I would have to say Hop Kee's bathroom is by far one of the cleanest. Does anyone remember the dim sum place upstairs from Hop Kee - Sun Hop Sing??? Do you recall their bathrooms..UGH! Anyways, ambiance is not great, but its simple and clean, it could be worse. I took my date here for a first date and now, my husband loves their food more than I do LOL! The only bummer is parking in Chinatown esp on the weekend, but even so, it's worth it. This place is a cash only basis, no checks or credit cards. But their prices are really reasonable and you get a lot of yummy food. You definately get your moneys worth here at Hop Kee's! Just remember to call and make a reservation for a party or 6 or more or the wait can get a little crazy. Oh, another thing to try is the minced beef with peas over rice with an over easy egg on top, once you break the egg and the yolk melts onto the rice and beef, you mix it up and enjoy, the best thing on earth!!!!

I have never reviewed a restaurant on CS before, but my experience at Hop Kee last night compelled me to do so. My friend and I had just finished eating. She had shrimp in lobster sauce, I had veggie lo mein. We were both pretty happy with our meal and about to pay the check when a girl at the table next to us flew to the other side of the restaurant because a WATERBUG the size of a DINOSAUR had just landed on the table in front of her. The waiter came over and squashed it, then acted v nonchalont as if this was completely normal. The nice thing to do would have been to comp everyone's dinner or something, but the entire staff just ignored the whole incident and stared at the ceiling (where the creature came from) wonderingly. Maybe they did something for the people whose table it landed on. Anyway, I felt sick for the rest of the night and will not be returning to this restaurant.

Pros: Fast service, inexpensive

Cons: Hardly any vegetable dishes, velociraptors dropping in, zero decor, soda served in cans

This is a downstairs restaurant and it's under this great tea house called Sun Hop Shing. Average cost of a dish is about 11 dollars and it's really a rather small platter. While the food tastes good sometimes, it still doesn't seem worth it. It's served in a pretty dull way with no excitement. The waiters don't answer your questions and the fortune cookies are fraud. It's not the best place to eat in the world. The only good thing I can think of is that the space isn't too cramped and each table sort of has its own space.

Great chinese restaurant for those who have actually eaten in China, I got flashbacks the first time I came here; it's affordable, food is served hot and quick, and the atmosphere is chaotic. One thing though, I really do not understand why people recommend the cantonese crabs. I got them once and they were terrible for these reasons: Impossible to eat, messiest thing I have ever seen, and the amount of work you put in for the tiniest bits of overcooked crab is not worth it. Imagine crushed up soggy crab shells smothered in thanksgiving gravy with bits of pork, cause thats the dish! Get the salted squid with hot peppers, any chow fun, and some bok choy and you will not be dissappointed. Oh yeah, and be prepared to wait a bit (20 min) on weekend prime time nights.

Ok, style may be "0" but substance is definitely a "10" with the quality of cooking right up there with the top Hong Kong chefs, I dare say!

I've been coming here for the last 10 years when I am in the city and just love the steamed flounder, porkchops and watercress. I recommend this highly for anyone who wants to experience an authentic Chinese restaurant where the focus is on extremely good but inexpensive food. I guarantee you'll come back!

I love Chinese food and it's rare to find a place in Chinatown that doesn't have good Chinese food. Unforetunately, this is one of those places. Hop Kee is just plain bad. I shared a chow mein and tofu dish with someone and we thought both were terrible. The dishes were flavorless and they used way too much oil. There are plenty of places all around this restaurant that have terrific Chinese food, so don't bother stopping in this one.

As many have said before me, the decor is as plain as any place I've ever been. In fact, decor-less is more appropriate. But, the food was wonderful. I went with a group of 6, and the service was fast, the food was delicious, and the restaurant was clean. But, one dish that many had recommended on different websites turned out to not be what we expected. Two of us ordered the Cantonese Crab, because of all the recommendations we read. It was very difficult to eat. It was quite messy, and getting the crabmeat out of the shells was more trouble than it was worth. I don't recommend it at all. The Chinese brocolli was one of the best vegetables I have ever had, and the porkchops were great, the sweet and sour pork was great as was everything else we had right down to the fried wontons!

Hop Kee has the best Chinese food in Chinatown! Try these dishes, you wont be disappointed: spicy beef chowfun, peking porkchops or salted porkchops, steak and broccoli, scallopes and snowpeas, and the crabs.

I have been a fan of this restaurant for the past 15 plus years! It's always great, fast, and cheap. Worth the trip! (We use to go in every Thursday from Nassau County, Long Island!)

Passing by Hop Kee one is struck by it's unassuming nature. Yet you can't help but notice the number of people waiting to go down the steps of this back alley restaurant and with good reason. While it's true Hop Kee isnt much to look at, the food is the absolute best Chinese food you will ever eat in your life. Not sure what to get? The helpful staff is definite Chinese old school and will help you pick something to your palette. No matter what dish you order, you'll be treated to a tasteful delight like no other. If you're looking for 'fine dining experience' with lesser quality food and jacked up prices to boot, try somewhere else. But for authentic Chinese food and home-style service come to Hop Kee.

Hop Kee serves the most delicious Chinese food I've ever eaten. You basically eat right after you order, and you should share dishes so everyone can taste. The prices are dirt-cheap for the food you're getting. Hop Kee was the first restaurant my parents took me to as a kid, i was two years old. I've gone about five times a year every year after that, and now that I go to college in the city, I'm there almost every other week. I've brought so many kids downtown to Hop Kee and I'm not exaggerating when I say 9 in 10 want to go back. Awesome, awesome place!

Okay, so the bathroom is a little scary and the milieu brings to mind an old diner or cafeteria, but simply put, the food here is the best. Anytime, anywhere. For lunch, for dinner, post all night bacchanalia, Hop Kee is to die for. My last meal would definitely consist of their spicy/salty pork and squid.

Old style Cantonese restaurant. They have the best seafood in Chinatown. Started going there for seafood ever since childhood. If other Chinatown restaurant owners go to HopKee for their seafood...that says a lot. Love the lobster, crabs, and traditional Cantonese soup! No fancy tablecloths, the concentration is on food.

It might not look like much but you don't know what you're missing. I've been going to this restaurant since I was a little kid. Now whenever i'm in the city i stop in here. The food comes in heaping amount plus it's cheap and tastes really good. You can't go wrong with anything that you order. If you can make it here during dim sum time that's a bonus. Also make some room for their sweet buns. Yum Yum
