I do NOT recommend this moving company. We had a terrible experience with our move in late March of this year, and would strongly advise finding another company if you care at all about your belongings, and if you'd like to keep the stress to a minimum on move day and in the months following.

After receiving a quote from Movers Not Shakers, they compromised a few hundred dollars to to match quotes we received from other moving companies. Their estimator came to our house prior to providing us with a quote to assess the move and the items to be moved. We went with them because they are a local company, and they advertise on NPR (we figured that provided some credibility).

When the moving crew arrived the morning of the move, they started the move immediately. About half way through the move, about 50% of our belongings had been taken down to the truck. The moving guys disappeared for about an hour. We found most of the movers sitting down the staircase of our building and the Supervisor was out front of my building having an argument with someone at their office.

One of the movers then proceeded to tell us our job should have been bid much higher, and it was way under bid. He then mentioned their office does this to them all of the time, and they don't make enough money. I think you'll agree this is an internal matter that shouldn't involve customers, nor effect the quality of a move a customer receives after agreeing to a price with a moving company. If their estimator didn't want to be competitive, he didn't have to bid on the job, and we would have gladly gone with another company who wanted to handle our move.

Within 5 minutes, the moving resumed, but with a totally different work ethic. The supervisor from that point on didn't say a word to us. I got a sense of attitude from the rest of the movers as well. The job at that point was dealt with on a rushed basis and I noticed very fragile pieces be handled roughly. Boxes that said "this side up" were carried upside down and furniture that we requested to be blanket wrapped was not. Upon arrival into our new apartment, many boxes were put down and stacked upside down. Boxes marked "do not top load" were stacked several high on top of each other.

What's worse is that our sofa and a desk suffered damage (amongst several smaller items), and Movers Not Shakers did not care to have either piece properly repaired for us. I was told by Mark, the owner, that we should have purchased moving insurance through a 3rd party insurer. They sent an upholsterer over to "repair" the sofa weeks later (with a piece of fabric and bottle of craft glue). After I received an estimate to repair our desk, they sent us a check for half the cost, and said they could do no more, as they would be losing $ on the move. I think we lost big time, but the owner clearly doesn't care about that.

Having moved over 20 times in my life, I have never had a move that was so frustrating and full of mishaps. This was a 10 block move...I've moved across the U.S. twice, and not had my belongings suffer any damage. I also know friends who have had furniture damaged in moves, and the moving companies they hired rectified the situation, and professionally repaired what they were responsible for damaging. This in not how Movers Not Shakers does business.

The owner of the company continued to maintain a demeanor of rudeness and carelessness through the entire process. He yelled at me, swore, and told us the moving mishaps/damages were our fault. I cannot believe with this sort of customer service that this company is even in business.

Please, save yourself the headache, and go with another mover. Their NPR ad slogan states they are "changing the way New Yorkers feel about moving". Unfortunately, they are not changing it for the better.

Pros: got moved from point A to point B, but not in one piece.

Cons: Careless and rude. Terrible business practices.

I moved with this company on the first of May, and boy was that a mistake. Heard about them on WNYC so I thought they came highly recommended. They're "green!" They do flat rates! Great!

First of all, when I told them how much stuff I had, they gave me an estimate of bins that they said was "more than enough." They arrived to drop them off at the appointed time. It immediately became clear that there weren't going to be enough of them. So the next day I had to order more. A lot more. They arrived about an hour late for their appointment to drop THOSE off and informed me I was being charged more (even though they were the ones who screwed up the estimate).

Moving day. Move scheduled for 1 pm. My movers showed up at 3:45. Maybe closer to 4. I got one call, around 2, saying they were running a little late because someone had more stuff than anticipated and more flights of stairs than anticipated (um, aren't you supposed to KNOW THIS STUFF in advance? You ask these questions right on your website). When I tried to call back around 3, the guy's phone was shut off.

My team of movers showed up, finally, after I'd been cooling my heels in my packed-up, hot apartment for hours. The head guy, clearly annoyed and exhausted, and his team of five guys who were "brought in at the last moment" (clearly, the buddies of one of the two ACTUAL MOVING PROFESSIONALS who were doing the move). The head guy didn't speak Spanish and the majority of the "crew" didn't speak Engligh. Which works tremendously well for a) a coordinated move and b) my bins getting into the rooms I'd labeled on the tops. Nobody seemed to know what the F they were doing with the exception of Vinnie. That dude was super strong, and nice. He is the only reason I'm giving this company ANY stars.

When we got to the new place, I was told that the guys needed a pizza break. Cue another half hour of waiting around for that. Plus, the head guy's co-worker from the company showed up in ANOTHER truck, done with his own jobs, and parked across the street. Just to hang out and wait for him to finish. I'm sure my new neighbors across the street were psyched about THAT. (Side note: my stuff was moved in a Budget rental truck. Hardly the "biodiesel" vehicle promised on the site.)

All in all, the worst move I've ever had, and I have moved a lot, and with a bunch of low-budget companies. When I left a message informing the owner, Mark, of all of this, I kind of expected a profuse apology and a reduction in my rate for the incredibly crappy service. Instead I got an angry phone call from him: a litany of excuses for everything that I just listed above, a refusal to take responsibility for any of it, and a last ditch offer to "send [me] a check for a hundred dollars." Implying it was not a refund but a payoff for not, say, writing a bad review online. Um, whatever. I'd rather get the word out. Movers Not Shakers are the WORST. AVOID AVOID AVOID.

Pros: One guy named Vinnie

Cons: Everything else

I read the moving stories below, and I have to say, Im surprised.I decided to write a pretty long review, because i feel these reviews have been a bit unfair. My experience with Movers not Shakers was amazing-and this was the second move they had handled for me.

We were moving overseas, and had to have a fifth floor walk-up emptied of years of stuff and repacked into a tiny container, parked in the middle of the street, the day after Thanksgiving. I cannot tell you how worried we were as the moving day approached-would they show up? what would they break? Would we have any money left? We had used Mark before for a smaller move, which went well, but this time, he surpassed all expectations.

We used them for everything- for the packing, crating, loading-everything. We were pretty disorganized for such a huge move, but they took our last minute crap and they did their job, and It was effortless.I was sure that our stuff wouldnt fit, other movers had told us so, and refused to do a 20 foot container which was what we could afford. Mark came, he saw, and and he fit EVERYTHING we owned into the container through careful packing and total attention to each fragile item. Two months later, we are overseas, we've unpacked and NOT ONE item they packed and put in the container has been broken/damaged. In fact, we even crated our TV and electronics/mirrors with these guys, and a friend who paid four times as much for crating via fedex ended up with rubble.

Mark is no nonsense, but im assuming if you speak like a person and not a "busy doctor" with him, he will be polite with you. He was a gentleman with me, and the quote was extremely reasonable and based on a home inspection-i strongly urge you to do this additional step so you both know how many people and how many boxes will in fact be needed. Also, get the quote in writing, which Mark was more than happy to do, and which he honored.

Its silly to think a phone quote will be binding when the movers arrive and its five times the amount because you were "considerate" and packed lightly but with more boxes. And as far as tips go-I think for a 1000 dollar move, paying four guys 40 bucks each for a job well done is kind of standard-you tip a waiter 15% at a $200 dinner for telling you the fish is good-these guys do the labor and should be acknowledged for some serious back breaking work which you now are not performing.

I would be more than happy to recommend them highly. I suggest if something bugs you, you immediately report anything untoward to the owner, Mark. Good luck! Thanks for reading.

Movers Not Shakers moved me today and were incredible. They delivered the boxes according to schedule (5 days in advance) and were on time for the appointment for moving. The movers wrapped stuff professionally and with care. They respected labels and placed boxes in appropriate rooms, as well as taking plastic and quilts off all big furniture.

The move was fast, but quality. I would highly recommend them again for any move.

Asked me to ride in their truck and pay them in tip what my cab ride would have costed. They didn't damage anything and moved everything I asked them to, but when it came time to pay my total + tip, they demanded more money from me. I gave them a very big tip and they were rude and counted the tip money in front of me and then asked for more money. They made me feel unsafe and uncomfortable after a stressful day of moving. I already was paying them in cash, and I was giving them all the cash I had. He was creepy and laughing and waiting for me to give him more money- - after i said this was all the cash i had, he was pushing me to give him my credit card number so he could get more money from me. I will never use this company again --very sketchy, rude, creepy movers.

The first problem was the movers showed up an hour and a half late, but that wasn??t the worst part of the experience. Not only did I have to drive one of the movers in my car (which was slightly uncomfortable) the worst part is when they asked for payment. After I handed over a huge chunk of cash (they do not accept credit cards) the guy ??in charge?? strongly suggested that I tip each mover $50.00 a piece! There were four movers..which is an extra $200!!!! He was getting aggressive and told me that I should go to an ATM since I didn??t have any extra cash on me. I felt threatened and was worried for my safety, so I took out some cash handed it to him and walked away as fast as I could. The experience up until that point was not bad and the movers were nice except for the ring leader. I felt completely uncomfortable and threatened. After relaying my experience to a co-worker she informed me that she too had a similar experience and we discovered that it was the same guy. We will NEVER use this company again.

My daughter called this company about a month before her scheduled move within Manhattan. The person who answered the phone gave her a quote and said they would drop off "green" plastic boxes a week beforehand. My daughter called to report she had not received the packing boxes. Whoever answered the phone couldn't find a record of the scheduled move, and transferred her to "Mark". Mark said he didn't like the "tone" of my daughter's voice. (Yes she was somewhat exasperated at having to start all over again, but was not rude.) When Mark heard she was a doctor, he went on a tirade about how she wasn't respecting him and ended the coversation with an obscenity. She would write this review herself, but, again, as a doctor, she does not have the time and her infuriated mother is doing the honors. Avoid these people.

Cons: incredibly rude, obscene language

.

I just recently moved and I did not have a good experience with this company. Aside from the fact that their customer service / owner is lacking business diplomacy, they are rude, and they tried to change the price of my move last minute - after they loaded up half of the of my stuff. Considering moving is stressful enough, I did not need this last minute change coming up right in the middle of the move. If you use this company I highly suggest the following: - Get a real quote by having one of their reps visit your apt / home. Otherwise you can basically count on having the price increased. They will try to help you estimate the boxes over the phone, but they were very off. They consider themselves a "flat fee" service but realy it's a box count that they are basing things on. On a side note, be careful in packing boxes...I tried to spread things out to not make the boxes heavy and thats when they started to accuse me of having more stuff... - Count on a 20% tip for the movers - they are expecting it and will make it plain and clear. So if you are paying $1000 - you will be paying $1200. I thought it was an all inclusive service with professionals - I guess I'm naive! So make sure to count it as a plus. - Even though they expect the tip - they will not unpack your clothes or put together the furniture as stated. - Make sure to get the email confirmation they send you. Apparently it explains a lot of last minute fee changes...or so they say. I kept asking for them to send it to me but they never did. Didn't realize they spell it out that they may increase the price last minute. Go figure. Overall I would not recommend this company - they are overall inconsistent in what they promise, what you pay for and how the day of the move unfolds. I thought I was paying for a professional service, but they have a ways to go.

Pros: Efficient

Cons: Last minute changes in price quoted

.

1 - These movers will scam you out of money. They first loaded up the truck and then they added on money to the bill because they claimed that there were more boxes than what I was quoted at. They pulled this same scam on my friend that moved with them too.
2 - they damaged my building because they had to move my couch up the stairs. they made no effort to avoid damaging my belongings or my building. I was told that it was no problem to reimburse me once I gave them the reciept. Then the scumbag owner of the company backed out of it saying it wasn't damaged maliciously and that I got a deal on the move because he didn't charge me extra for moving my couch using the stairs.
Avoid these guys unless you are prepared to spend a few extra hundred dollars on top of what you're quoted.

These guys are knowledgeable, careful, courteous, punctual, personable, grass-roots professionals. Movers Not Shakers was started by a couple of guys who grew tired of the white-collar world, and had nothing more than a van and a plan (I know because one of the owners was one of my movers). They make it simple -- just go to their website, tell them what you have, and they give you a quote within 24 hours. They work with a FLAT RATE, so you'll know what you're paying ahead of time and so they'll work as efficiently as possible so they can move on to their next job. I've used them twice. My family has used them twice. I wouldn't even bother researching anyone else. They'd sooner whip out a ruler and measure dimensions and angles before they'd shove a couch up a narrow stairway and hope it makes it though unscathed. These guys know what they're doing and, if you value your personal belongings, you'll hire them. Plus, I dig their name....
