The huge wooden tables make this a great, winter pub. Rumor has it you can find the carved in names of all kinds of literary heroes for whom this was a legendary hang out. I've never found any but have enjoyed many an evening looking.

The editorial review by Kara Zuaro gets all the facts wrong. The Cedar Tavern wasn't "established in the 1960s" - it was established in the 1860s. Ginsburg & Kerouac frequented it in the 1950s, and not at the present location. A little more care next time, please.

We've had many good get-togethers in the Cedar's upstairs room. Hope it's still as accomodating.
Looking forward to another visit soon.

I have a ton of experience with the Cedar over the years and if you want to have a pleasant, fun time at this bar, here is my recommendation: Only come in with four or less people. Large groups are a hindrance to business, completely in the way of good service to dining patrons, and generally a pain in the butt. You also run a very high risk of getting yelled at by a psychotic, power-wielding manager. If you do want to come in with a large group of friends, CALL FIRST! The staff is more than happy to secure a spot for you and your friends if they have a heads up. The policies are strange and sometimes, unreasonable but let me tell ya, Cedar has its reasons even if they don't make sense to the average person.

Pros: inexpensive, great atmosphere, great service

Cons: no large groups

I've been going to Cedar Tavern for over a decade now and I am always surprised that their prices-to-size ratio hasn't changed much. Although having dinner in a bar is by no means considered a typical dining experience given the fact that *IT IS* a bar and there are also people headed there just to unwind and knock a couple back. But even then, I think their wooden booths add to the dining-in-a-bar experience. Whenever me an my friends go it's to full up on much needed soulful food like their pulled pork sandwiches or their roast beef sandwiches aus jus ( which both -by the way- can be shared cause they are huge!) And hour after hour, pitcher after pitcher, it only gets more jovial as the night progresses.

It's bar dining after all.

Pros: sandwiches, beer, more beer

Cons: people can get cranky

My party was treated so poorly that I could never give them business again. Apparently you're suspicious if you take more than 5 minutes to decide what to order, because the manager came up to my party and snapped at us, saying we weren't going to order anything and we were just taking up space (despite the fact that the place was practically empty - he argued that it would soon fill up in 15 minutes, but 1 hour later there was still no new customers). He came close to ordering us to leave, insisting that our faces betrayed our true intentions of just hanging out for a while then leaving, before we convinced him to calm down. It's too bad an otherwise great place is made unbearable by waiters and a manager who treat their customers like they weren't human.

Pros: Above average food, Reasonable Price

Cons: Abusive manager, Rude servers, Uptight

I was with a large group of people when I went and the waitress was very attentive to our needs. Of course it was somewhat loud, but no more so then other places I have been to. I would suggest it and the service is really good so definitely go for that. Besides, it's a NYC landmark!

Very well known by its reputation, this is kind of a tourist spot if your in the know. Writers and artists alike used to gather here in the 50s and 60 s and discuss and have conversations.

There is nothing outstanding about this place but the food is consistently good and the beer if always flowing. Eat upstairs for more of a restaurant atmosphere. You can just sit and drink, also... they won't rush you out.
The actual bar, made of Cedar, is from the original location somewhere else in Manhattan and is pretty historical for NYC.

Pros: location, decent price, historical

It's about two blocks south of Union Square and is a cool place to have lunch. It's got oak and brass decor and has got a friendly staff. My party's order came in a hit and miss affair; meaning the dishes had to be sent back to be re-heated. Crowd could resemble a modern Edward Hopper painting.

Pros: Large portions, good lunch menu, authentic "olde"decor

Cons: , not for children

I used to be a regular at Cedar since it's a close local bar, and the bartenders are great, but the owner is very rude. It's unfortunate - I won't step foot in there again.

The waiter and manager flipped out when our party of 4 unexpectedly turned into a party of 6. We were nice about it. Meanwhile, they were so unorganized and angry about it. To make matters worse, THE MANAGER SCREAMED AT ME IN MY FACE (I am a small woman--hardly threatening) in front of my friends. I used to go to the Cedar often--for the drinks, never for the overpriced, terrible food. I will NEVER set food in that place again. In all of NYC, and I've been here eight years, I've never seen such the disrespectful mess as I saw there.

I've review this place on another venue. I just read the other review you have here, unfriendly, etc. I hope the Cedar reads this too. I'll make it short. Tuesday, May 25, steak was well instead of medium, waited a while, and then my husband leaves, a tip, certainly more than reasonable, and the waitress and I use the term loosely returns and says was everything alright - this isn't even 15%. I was never more shocked. We have been going to the Cedar for some two plus years. This was an outrage. This is not the way service personnel treat customers who spend more than $125 sometimes four or five times a year.

Don't bother to go - they will not see us again.

Outraged.

This Friday, I and a small group of friends decided to go to Cedar for an after-dinner drink. While all the tables upstairs and down were occupied, there was plenty of space at the bar. However, at every turn, we were turned away. The barman basically refused to serve us, saying that 1 or 2 would be fine, but 4 ro 5 was too many. Meanwhile, a few feet away, a large group of large rugby players were enjoying a drink, presumably friends of the barman, or maybe they knew the secret code!

We were similarly turned away upstairs, rudely and cursorily. The staff here are impolite, and seem not to be commercially minded. We took are money elsewhere. There was a time when the Tavern used to be a friendly neighborhhod joint. N more.

Some of waitresses have an attitude problem. I wonder if their job is making customers feel bad instead of serving drinks or foods. I can only say that you shouldn't go there if you want to have fun with your friends. You will waste your time and money. I should have read reviews before I went. Many people had the same bad experience.

I generally agree with the bad reviews. This place used to have a laid-back, friendly vibe, but now these bartenders are ruder than a soho/eurotrash serving wench. Perhaps they're not adjusting well to the nicotine-free environment. Can someone get these dudes 'the patch'?

A group of friends took me to Cedar for lunch one day and it was good, and that was that. I went back later when I realized how close it was to my home. It was just the perfect place for me to stop on my way home or when I just needed to get out. The staff, though they don't know me, are always kind to me, and the service is quick. I think Cedar has the best burger in the city, and the barstaff is fun but not pushy. I find it cozy and comforting. Highly recommended.

We walked in - a group of about 15. We were told we were "in the way" and wouldn't be served. We moved--and we were told "you're blocking the whole aisle. you need to move or you will not be served." It's a bar. Bars tend to be crowded on weeends. We weren't bothered by it. We told them that wasn't the best business practice and the waiter said "look around. do we look like we're hurting for business?" that's all we were...hinderances to their "business" of college kids. if you want some class--take your "business" elsewhere.

I was walking around the Union Square area one day and happened in here for lunch. The food was delicious and I found the bartender to be very friendly. I had fun, and the atmosphere was as a Tavern should be. This is a great place to go out with your boozing buddies.

wow, some of these reviews are harsh! I've probably been to cedar about 75 times, and maybe three of those were a bad experience. maybe some of the reviewers just had bad luck?

it's a great place for a relaxed lunch, or dinner upstairs (especially earlier in the evening, when sunlight is still coming in through the skylights) or just meeting up with friends after work for some beers. I'd definitely recommend it! a relaxed and comfortable neighborhood spot.

I have no idea what happened to Cedar. We used to go here and be welcomed by a lively, friendly, and efficient staff.... great vibe.......... Now it feels like a boring bar with no character. And we were treated rudely. The days of fun are gone. Time to find a new hangout.

I agree that some days are better than others. My friends and I have all hung out out Cedar and had a good time, but today (Sunday afternoon) we came in and the owner claimed that our IDs weren't valid because they were all from different states! How ridiculous is that?? He snatched my boyfriend's completely valid Connecticut ID from the bartender, examined it under the light, then threw it down on the bar and said he didn't want to serve us. I understand that, as a bartender, you have every right to refuse service to customers if you feel that something may be shady, but four out of the five people in our group are bartenders and we are all a lot more polite than he was! It was just rude, and as a consequence we never want to go back there again.
