I don't know who they had to bribe for the claim that they're Newsday's best or whatever the sign they have on display says.. I am sure they must know someone for that.
I went several times but gave up on the place. There's always a rude

I'm not usually one to invest time into writing reviews, but I was so bothered by the experience I had a few weeks ago, I just have to leave a print on this place.\r

I normally don't write reviews, but I feel like this place gets a bad rap. After reading some of these reviews, I was almost afraid to go in this place, but alas, I stopped in for a late dinner on my way back from LaGuardia the other day.

"We were at the Neptune Diner last Saturday around 4:00 am. The place was very busy and the service excellent, our waitress was great ! We saw something strange though. The bus boy, named Carlito (as the manager called him) took money from her table and put it quickly in his pocket !!! We thought this should not happen. We were trying to talk to her but she was very busy so we had no chance. I am posting this now to let the management know this because this is morally wrong. She works really hard for her money. So, my friend lives in astoria (i live in LI) and she had read the reviews and figured this place had to be crap. Anyway one night after the beer gardens we went there,(even though my friend was weary) and boy are we glad we did!
The waiter, someone reference in another review, (bald with glasses) was actually JOKING when he said "i dont care" as he said that to me and my 3 friends also during our meal. Sum ppl just dont get jokes i guess. Anyway that same waiter that "didnt care" got all our orders exactly right, and and even did magic tricks! from pulling a quarter out of my ear to flipping my water glass completely upside down without spilling anything out of it. The food was farrrrr better and cheaper then any diner in LI and better then another diner we had gone to in astoria. SO inconclusion if ur not a little baby and can handle a few jokes, and want some good food, then go right ahead. And who ever posted a comment that they are racist should check themselves b/c the guy that opened the door for us (manger owner?) was black. sooo i dont get it. And for the record i am NOT greek nor do i work there.

Pros: waiters that do magic tricks, and delicious food, and cheapp

Cons: nothing really

I went here one night to console a friend's breakup. I ordered a bagel with no butter, since I can't eat butter. The waiter repeated my order back to me, so I thought I was in the clear. 10 minutes later, they brought our food, my bagel had butter on it. When I notified the waiter that I had ordered it without butter, he looked at me like I was crazy and said, "what?" Hello? There are people in this world that cannot eat butter, and I especially figured you got this, since you repeated my order to me! Oy, if you're going to be a waiter, then be a waiter. I've done it, I know how it goes, you're not supposed to question, forget or ignore a customer's order.

Cons: service sucks big time, food adequate

I can only deduce that this place is owned and run by the mob considering that they have 55 year old greek waiters serving tables. Our server (for reference) was bald and wore glasses. At first he seemed perky and friendly and was talking to us about all kinds of random things like where he lived in Germany. When we tried to engage back with him he abruptly would speak over us and not let us say anything. Needless to say he had a god complex. Later in the meal another 3 guys came and sat down behind us and said to the waiter "wtf is this?" pointing to us. The waiter replied "who knows".

Obviously these guys thought we were on their "turf" (didn't realize you could claim a diner as turf). The waiter became progressively more aggressive with us and condescending. The 3 guys behind us were talking about us and called my cousin a "f*g" since he has a little bit of a lisp when he speaks. The waiter gave us the check and said VERBATIM "if there is anything else that you need I don't care!"

This place obviously does not care about their reputation and any good reviews you read about this diner are most likely posted by the restaurant themselves. Where else do you see 50 year old greek guys serving a diner bragging about sleeping with a 17 year old girl to customers?? Don't ever go there, unless of course it's your "turf".

Pros: good food

Cons: service was insulting

The portions are huge, the food is amazing, you need to remember that the waiters are not dogs, treat them with respect, tip them well and they will remember you...and they won't treat u like dogs!

People think everyone should serve them like their mothers, hey they are doing a job....

Neptune diner is the best....

I keep reading these reviews "oh the staff at Neptune was so MEAN to us! How dare they!"

Get off your high horse and welcome to Queens, bitches. This is service with a sneer. "Oh, the waiter seemed like he didn't even want to be there!"

Well, would you?

Botttom line; this is a great diner, regardless of what these tourist beergarden dropouts (who are all probably from Long Island or Brooklyn) have to say about it. If you think the phrase "I will take my business elsewhere" has any effect on this diner, well, go away.

And they have excellent muffins!

i own a home in astoria because i like the friendly european environment. i have been to Neptune diner several times because it is within walking distance from my home. The host and wait staff never fail to be rude...but today was the last time. We waited forever. When we noticed that parties who arrived after us were being seated, i politely approached the host and asked if we were to be seated soon. there was confusion with "the list" and the host mistakenly crossed our names off and sat another party with the same name. rather than apologize for the confusion, he was rude and insulting. Never ever again will I go here!!!!!

Pros: it is in america, which means you can choose NOT to go here!

Cons: the host is the rudest man on the planet

After getting a table on a busy sunday morning, I was starving and the conditions of the place made me lose my appetite. There was food all over the floor, dirty booth, silverware looked unwashed and it left me so grossed out. I was starving and still left to go to a cafe on 30th. yuck. Not to mention the old guy taking names at the door was incredibly mean and crabby!!! not recommended!!!

I live a few blocks away and frequently ate at the Neptune diner. I overlooked the rude owner /staff and average diner food due to the convenient location. well no more. he treats the patrons (even regulars) like you are bothering him. he does not deserve the business. i would rather walk or drive for decent service.

I have been living in Astoria for about a year, and just recently my husband and I tried out the Neptune Diner. WOW! Not only is it open 24 hours but the servers are prompt and extremely friendly. We were seated right away and all of the food was delicious. I had the meatloaf which came with 2 vegetables (e.g. corn, baked potato) and soup or salad, it was like $9.95!!! Plus all of the home made bread we could eat. I returned tonight only to have the most amazing french toast comprised of two thick slices of home made bread with ham for under 7 bucks. Oh and the orange juice! Ridiculous. I think it was $1.30 and it was fresh squeezed! Pulpy and delicious! The menu is huge, so obviously I can't vouch for the whole thing, but I imagine you would not be disappointed! EAT THERE!

Have been going to Neptune diner for +20 yrs,
wouldnt have been going so long if i didnt enjoy it,
On the last visit was so dissappointed feel compelled to Rant on it,
I ordered a Gyro,
there was no more than 2 thin strips of gyro meat,
rest was Lettuce in A pita.
Never have i had such a wimpy gyro,
I also ordered the Mousaka and Pasticcio to go,
First Portions were so small it didnt fill my 4 yr old niece,
Mousaka had no eggplant in it,
Instead there was potato,
Maybe recipe changed but since when did mousaka have potato and no eggplant?

Dont know if the diner changed management, owners, chef or what
but this is not the same Neptune diner i have been going to for +20 yrs,

Hi there, thanks for taking the time to read my little review. This is the WORST diner I've ever been to. It started when I came in, and 3 minutes later ordered an Irish coffee. Since it was 11.00 on a Sunday, the waitress told me that since everyone (who is everyone?! Not me or anyone else in the place!) is going to Church, they would not serve alcohol until 12.00. This is a blue law that is usually not enforced (secular society violation alert!!!). Then the waitress gave me a bad attitude. She did warm up closer to the end, but that did not make up. The food was average. Also, the support waiter, whose job it was to refill water, ignored me on purpose 3 times before coming by. I acted politely throughout the whole time. And to finish off this review, when I looked on my credit card statement, they overcharged me by 6 USD!!! I have heard even worse stories about this place from other people. Don't let this diner's ranking on the Travel Channel fool you- is BAAAAAD mon!

The Neptune has always prominently displayed its accolades "Voted best Diner in New York City" etc... But the thing that strikes me most about the Neptune is not their uniqueness, but rather their sameness to every other diner I have ever wasted time drinking coffee in. The notable difference here is that they do all the things those other diners do, but they do them better. Their food is higher quality, their staff is slightly less gruff, and their milkshakes are a little bigger. all around maybe not the best diner, but definitely a little better.

People who are allergic and asthmatic should avoid going there since they spray cleaning solutions while all the foods are SERVED on the table .... making it a health hazard esp for the small children, old people and allergic / asthmatic patients!!

So stay away from this diner if you don't want to get yourself into health problem of ingesting aerosols while eating your meals that you are paying for !!

The manager ( Mr Jack - is its his real name he gave ) would totally deny this fact like he did that time. But.... BE WARNED OF YOUR OWN HEALTH !!

I'm surprised to see the bad reviews for this place, the food is ALWAYS excellent and the portions are enormous. The waiters may not win the congeniality award but they have always been attentive to our parties and served us well. And BelAire better than Neptune??? I don't think so. BelAire's salads were never as crispy fresh as Neptune's. The food in general does not have the flavor and quality that Neptune has. Some of the stuff they brought out at BelAire was kind of wilted and stale looking. For my money Neptune has consistently been an excellent dining experience.

I showed up on a busy Sunday after reading the sign out front of the diner stating: Voted Best Diner by the NY Daily News. So I figured it must be good. The minute I walked up, I felt a tense energy but I walked in with a positive attitude. My friend and I signed in for a party of 4- while we were waiting on our other 2 guests to find parking because there was not enough in their parking area or on 31st. We were called 25 minutes later by an old guy playing host. When we explained our missing party members were outside, he rudely said: "I don't have time for this". Strike one. Then I told him I was going to call them on their mobile to come inside and he told us we would have to be put on the list and wait all over again. Strike two. Then I asked if we could be seated with just 3 members at a table for 4 while the other 1 shows up and he said: "don't waste my time". I was done. This all happened within 2 minutes. Instead of arguing back or even trying to defend myself I said: "I will take my business elsewhere". He said: "Good"! No one should be treated like that- ever. Now, I am here posting a negative review which will affect their business and I will go elsewhere. One should always be gracious & kind to everyone because you never know who you are going to run into.
If you think being rude and mean to patrons is charming- then this place is for you.
We ended up at Jackson Hole Diner. It's like they were waiting for us with a smile. Always consistently good and friendly and they serve a great cup of coffee. No more experimenting, I will be loyal to Jackson Hole.

Don't expect any kind of service unless you are spending money there everyday. I don't know what it was like 3 years ago when it was "the best diner in queens", but it is WAY overpriced($9+ for a mediocre gyro w/fries....IN ASTORIA?!) and the service is terrible. I'd rather goto Burger King across the street....

I'm a local, but this is the worst diner to go. I rather walk 3 extra blocks to Mike's or Igloo to eat. The waiters are rude and they just stand around if they have no desire to be there. The first time I went, I had to seat myself and then got up to get a menu. The waiter just stood there watching me. I walked out. The next time, just to see if the rudeness was a one time thing, the same service was deliverd. I walked out again. Go to Mike's or Igloo near Ditmars Blvd on 31st Street.

Okay, the Neptune is a LOCAL diner. What that means is that locals (esp. those speaking Greek) get a bit better treatment, and (as with most local diners in NY) the service is spotty, especially when they are not busy. However, the food is very good, especially (a propos of the name), anything that once swam. I highly recommend the broiled seafood platter, which is excellent. By the way, I fail to believe that any waiter from the Neptune "chased after" anyone over a tip. But this isn't the New York Times, so there aren't any fact-checkers here.

Beware !!!! THE WAITER working here is the biggest savage ! After the worst service ever the waiter actually chased after us and told us that we could have done better on his tip !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Left him $ 100 total for A $ 89 bill. Beyond what he deserved. First he slams A glass of soda spilling on the table. No appology. Never refills any drinks . Brought the kids the dessert before clearing the table. Never told the rest of us for dessert. CUSTOMERS NIGHTMARE !!! WOULD NEVER GO BACK THERE AGAIN IF THEY PAID ME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Whatever "Best Diner" means doesn't fit my definition of what I consider to be the best. If by best they mean: bad service and high prices, then they're absolutely correct -- it is the best diner in Queens!

Whatever "Best Diner" means doesn't fit my definition of what I consider to be the best. If by best they mean: bad service and high prices, then they're absolutely correct -- it is the best diner in Queens!

Pros: Food, Space, Parking

Cons: Service, Crowded

My closest neighborhood diner. Note: every time I have gone here alone, the waiters have virtually ignored me! Do they not approve of women eating out by themselves? Weird. This doesn't happen when I go there with friends.
Diner food (burgers, milkshakes) are average. I haven't tried the greek specialties. My friend said the cakes are dry and look a lot better than they taste .
On a positive note, it's open 24 hours, and they don't try to rush you (the opposite - you might wait ages for the check!)

I moved to the area 6 months ago and was excited to have a 24-hour eatery nearby. Unfortunately, I have to say that the service here is TERRIBLE. The waiters are rude and disrepectful. Though the food usually comes out fairly quickly, the order is wrong half of the time. Don't bother complaining because the managers are just as rude. Do yourself a favor and try Mikes Diner or the Igloo on Ditmars, or The Bel-Aire Diner (my personal favorite) instead.

Pros: Decent food, Clean, 24-hour

Cons: Bad service, Bad service, Bad service

The burgers are everything you dream of in a burger and the fries are heaven. The service is attentive and the place is super clean. The Bel-Aire cannot measure up. Oh, the breakfasts are great and plentiful and the spinach pie made my mouth water.

Went for dinner: Great food, decent service, and excellent location (perfect via driving or "N" train). Read the other reviews before I went. For diner fare (and even many average restaurants), the food is remarkably good! Yes, the portions are big. Our waiter may be considered minimalistic to brusque, but he was competent. Honestly, I don't go to diners expecting 4-star waitstaff and treatment: the waiter was decently efficient, that's all I expect. I would definitely go back again and eager to try their breakfasts.

The portions are HUGE and the food is great...staff is very attentive...I love the tuna melt. Their salads are very large!! Never had a bad meal there (and usually need to take a "doggybag")

All right, this diner used to be Best Diner in the City. It's right off the Triboro, everyone sees it, and it's not as good as you think. I used to sing it's praises, and then I had some very poor service on several occasions and I found a better diner, which is the new "Best Diner in the City" The Bel-Aire on 21st St. and Broadway. Ir's what this place should be.

I was quite disappointed that the "best diner in Queens" was anything but! My chicken sandwich was Chicken on bread...nada mas! Perhaps I'll get the burger next time!
The service was less than nice

Yes, no one can make a better feta cheese ommelette than Neptune Diner! I lived in Astoria for 2 years and believe me, I have tried many diners in Queens and never had a tastier omellette. Also I recommend the cheesecake with strawberries. The food is consistently good, they are open for 24 hours and the servers are friendly. What else can you expect from a Greek Diner?
