I first went to Wo Hop as a young 20 something back in the early 80s. It was a favorite for a late night bite. I went back again last week when I took my kids to the City. They loved it. I still love it. I've never had bad food there. Always delicious. The chicken wings are awesome. My entree last week was pork with string beans. I couldn't eat enough. At some point I had to stop, but I didn't want to. My daughter raved about her chicken with French mushrooms.

The general ambiance would be characterized as "memento clutter". There are photographs, shirt patches, business cards and notes covering the walls. Some new, some old. It's always interesting.

There is a sign in the restaurant that says they've been there since 1938. Success lives on. It's a different, but great dining experience. I'll be back the next time I make it to NYC.

Unbelievable Chinese food at an affordable price. The store is located in the heart of Chinatown on Mott St. Prices are equivalent to that of a McDonalds. Two can eat great food for just about $20.00. Highly recommended from someone who sees themselves as a conuesser of Chinese restaurants in the NY Metropolitan area.

I have eaten here twice, and I love it, they have the best Peking Duck I have ever had, and at a reasonable price. ($20) and they have great tea. The service is a little slow, but the servers are very nice. I search out this place every time I go to NYC. And there is a cute store across the street that sells great stuff, cheap!

Do not be fooled by the upstairs Wo Hop. I went there once and deeply regretted it. The downstairs Wo Hop is the quintessential American Style Chinese food in New York City. Wo Hop and Hop Kee are widely regarded as the two best in the City. They are right down the street from each other, but after going to Wo Hop, I've simply never felt the need to even try Hop Kee. It couldn't possibly be any better. (I'm going this weekend though, so I may eat my words.)

The walls are filled with pictures of people who look vaguely like famous people, but it's not actually them. It's an ironic statement (probably unintended) about the Carnagie Deli and other tourist traps with good but not unsurpassed food. It says that you don't need actual celebrities to endorse your greatness. There is nothing special about Wo Hop except the food and with food like that, it needs nothing else.

Don't be intimidated by the occasional long lines, they move deceptively quickly.
And don't expect anything fancy, just everything that's right about what Americans refer to as "Chinese Food".

this is the best chinese resturant in NYC!! I have been eating here since I was about 10 and it is always the highlight of my trip back home. There is often a long line to wait but it is well worth it. The employees are always super nice and friendly with my kids. DELICIOUS!!!

I decided to go for dinner with my husband and son tonight but I couldn't imagine I was making a mistake.
After reading the reviews here we headed to Wo Hop. When we got there they told us to choose a table but most of them were still dirty from the previous people.
Anyway we sited and ordered the follow:

Steamed Dumplings: The meat inside was still frozen and the tips were dry as if they were froze unpacked and then after 1 month taken from there and dumped in boiled water for 2 seconds. We didn't eat them.
Chicken Fried Rice: a little burned and too much soy sauce.
Chicken with Cashew Nuts: The chicken was rare and the only thing i could eat was the cashews.
Beef with garlic Sauce: My husband ate the broccoli only.
Chicken Lo Mein: I asked my son to eat only the noodles because i didn't trust the chicken freshness.

We left place after 20 minutes and got some slices of pizza from Little Italy.

Last Saturday night was my first experience at Wo Hop, and it definitely wont be my last. We ordered a ton of food and everything was amazing. I have been craving chicken kow in bb sauce. with a side of broad noodles since I have walked out of the restaurant. I was pretty much shoveling the food in my mouth with my hands. The food kept coming and the service was friendly and fast. I would recommend this place to anyone hands down. Anyone who wrote anything bad about this place needs to grow up. Wo Hop All Day!!!!

After hearing about Wo Hop from several friends I decided I had to check it out. At first I was disappointed by the cramped and almost dirty looking basement cafeteria, but after devouring my first fried dumpling I completely forgot about the lack of decor. As far as cheap Chinese food goes, Wo Hop is the best I've had in a long time. It's a great spot to go after partying because it's open very late at night. I've already had to return there after having an extreme Wo Hop craving at 4am.

I live on Upper West Side, and even though Wo Hop is so far away, I still go only there when I want some good Chinese food. They have the best fried dumplings and spare ribs, also they serve real big plates - all the food you can eat! Their service is fast, people there are friendly, and they have lots of visitors' pictures on the walls - that's something nice too.

I have lived in NY all my life & whenever the Wo Hop is mentioned someone says "yea, but you have to go to the one downstairs." I tried the one upstairs once & could not eat what they served me. I am a regular in the basement.

The writer of the original review states that they are both owned by the same person but I would be shocked if that is true. The one downstairs "Wo Hop Restaurant Inc." has been around since 1969 and has much better food. The one upstairs is "Sun Wo Hop Restaurant Corp." and opened in 1976. my guess is that they did the same thing that every "Rays Pizza" did (except for Rays on 6th Avenue and 11th Street ) take a good name & steal the business from people who say "If you are going to Chinatown to eat go to Wo Hop"

Wo Hop is a cultish, no-frills place that every NYC college student knows about because it's always open for dinner in the wee hours. I also had to laugh at the negative responses, as Wo Hop isn't pretending to be a fine Chinese restaurant -- it's for NYC-style Cantonese food that is VERY hard to find anywhere else! And you DON'T go there for the Szechuan food, as I note the response about the hot and sour soup. You go there for the ROAST PORK CHOW FUN, roast pork fried rice, pineapple chicken, wonton soup with somewhat greasy fried noodles and duck sauce (which they haven't even heard of west of the Hudson). (And you DON'T go to the upstairs restaurant -- one time I was back in NY and had no cash, so I tried it, thinking, How different can it be? and, well, Very. I was thoroughly disappointed.) I've lived in LA nearly 30 years now, and every time I'm back in NY, I have to go to Wo's for my roast pork chow fun fix. I love the Chinese food in LA, but I can never find chow fun or fried rice made the way it's made in NY, especially at Wo Hop. Writing this review has furthered my craving, as I haven't been back since 2005, alas :-(. Good thing I'll be going back in December. :-)

Was introduced to Wo Hop by New York friends and now I try to visit every time I am in NYC. At first I was reluctant because of it's underground, harried location, but that all disappeared once I tried the food and met the wonderful service staff. Everyone was extremely friendly and fast to help us order and get our food. Everything was delicious, from their soups to their noodles. I don't remember specifically the name of what I ordered, but no worries, anything you order there is great! The place went from unfamiliar, greasy throwback to comfortable, fun place in no time! I only wish they would open a restaurant in Chicago!

We love this place. Good food, icy cold Tsing Taos and comical surroundings. Sixty plus years in business and people are still lining up outside in all weather to eat here. I've been eating here, 4-5 times a month, for over twenty years. I don't live in the Manhattan anymore, but I make the trip in just the same, especially on Christmas Eve. My wife and I began coming here when we were dating. Now, our party of two has grown into a party of 10-12, depending on the number of friends my kids invite. They're all hooked too. Good times...

It might not be the 'prettiest' place in Manhattan, but Wo-Hop does serve up some of the best Chinese food in town. Try their lemon chicken and the pork fried rice. Be warned, most of their plates are large enough to be shared. Although it is a dark little hole on Mott St., the food always keeps me going back for more.

The place might look "grimy", but after you try the food you'll forget all about your surroundings. I've been going to this joint since I was two, and they have the best food ever. It can be a little oily at times, but one simple request can fix that. The waiters are friendly, and the prices are decent and unbeatable. I took my boyfriend (who is non-Asian) to this place and he loved it , so I highly recommend anyone and everyone to this place.

If you want FRESH shrimp, and snails then this is the place to go. If you are from the G-H-E-T-T-O then this restaurant is not right for you. IF U can afford the FRESH LIVE SHRIMP and SNAILS then go here. The best thing about it is after U finish eating then U can walk across the st. and play some VIDEO GAMES at Chinetown Fair and put a quarter into Street Fighter Alpha 3 which is my favorite game after a good meal. This restaurant also closes at 4am or 5am on the weekends. Great for the Clubbers.

I read the previous reviews and wanted to check out this great hole in the wall restaurant. We arrived on Friday starving at 3:00pm. We saw the line up and thought, what a find. People are lining up to eat at 3. We sat down and ordered our food. Everything was a goopy mess. What's with all the brown sauce? The food was inedible. We've had bad chinese food but this was probably the worst. We took two bites and left the restaurant still starving. Thank god for little italy. Bad food is bad food no matter what goopy sauce you put on it.

WOH! I can't believe people rave about this place! As a Chinese I knew I wasn't going to get authentic chinese food because when I entered I saw that none of the customers were Chinese. I went anyway because I don't really mind American Chinese food and also I had heard how great the food is. ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? They put enough corn starch (the thickening stuff) to glew your intestines together and enough MSG to keep you thirsty for two days. The dishes have nothing "Chinese" about them. I was very disappointed overall, although having some of their greasy & salty food would be good after clubbing or something.

This is one of the oldest restaurants in chinatown. It has been around for more than 20 years. It is located on the basement on mott st. I often go there late night since the restaurant open 24 hours. It serves authentic chinese food hence their reputation. Their prices are not expensive compare to some restaurants areound the area. These days mostly tourists go there since word got out. Probably from the good reviews by local newspapers. I recommend it.

Ok, after reading some of the negative reviews I had to laugh. Wo Hop isn't a place you go to when you want fine dinning. You go there when you want fast service and good New York City Chinese food. This is a place I have been too many times, usually after a night out at near by bars. The service might not be the best, but the food definitely hits the spot.

I was introduced to Wohop Through Vic an avid Wo-Hop fan. My first time in Wohop was like something out of a movie. I sat a a corner table with a group of Regulars. What a good time! The staff was halarioius! And knew my friends by name, the staff catered to us. I am not a fan of chinese food usually, but even that was delicious not to mention my first encounter with chinese beer. Worth your time. I am planning a trip to NYC in couple of weeks and Wohop is On my too do list.

The food's awesome and very reasonably priced. I even find a lot of tourists coming in here - so you know it's good. Oh yeah, and Bill Crosby has been sighted here too.

PROS: good service, good food, good prices.

Don't be nervous when you walk into this simple underground establishment, the food is outstanding! There's often a short wait for a table because space is so limited, but the food gets served very fast, and the prices cannot be argued with. Everything I've had on the menu has pleased me thus far. Once you order your food, you'll look around and desire other people's orders, so take your time ordering. When in doubt, the beef chow fun is no joke!

You don't go to Wo Hop for American Chinese food, for that you don't go to Chinatown at all. I know my Chinese food! They have the BEST: salt + pepper squid, crab - Chinese style (not black bean sauce - sauteed dried, trust me all my friends love), sauteed flounder with veggies (the fish is lightly fried and melts iin your mouth). The casseroles are good too. DO NOT order American Chinese food there. It's terrible.

The food here is a cheap version of American Chinese food. The food is poor. You can probably find better food at a cheap take-out restaurant. The service is terrible. The waitors never come around. They act like you're wasting their time. We had asked to pack our leftovers but the waitor completely forgot. We just left. We were glad we left.

We ate upstairs after making sure I was at the right Wo Hop (15 mott st, 17 mott st = basement). It looks like most chinese places I've been to inside. The service is a total joke, they act like your wasting their time, BUT the food is amazing! Everyone that I went with agreed that the food was the best they've ever had. The portions are HUGE and the prices are very, very reasonable!

I've in NY every other week on business. I go to Wo Hop each time I'm here. Every time I go, I have tried different things on the menu and haven't found anything I don't care for yet. Highly recommend the fried dumplings! Garlic eggplant is awesome too.

The only thing that keeps me going back to wo-hops is the shrimp w/ black bean sauce. Everything else is average- bad. Don't even think about ordering the wonton soup or the half frozen eggrolls. The waitstaff is patronizing, annoying, and unfriendly. The only thing worse than the smell of garbage outside the place is having to look at the 8x10s of the losers on the wall who think they're celebrities. Great shrimp though, lol.

I've been going to Wo Hop for over 22 years. All choices are great, although I rarely stray from my Egg Drop Soup, Fried Dumplings and Beef w/Black Bean Sauce. Not a romantic place to bring the wife, girlfriend or business colleague but if you want to impress as far as food, this is no better than this Asian delight. Bigggest reccomendation: EAT AT THE DOWNSTAIRS PORTION OF THE RESTAURANT. The foo dis MUCH better.

Wo-Hop started out as a restaurant over 60 years ago, and it has turned into a cult. The waitstaff has more personality than half of New York City. Anyone who doubts that Wo-Hop is the greatest establishment of all time has no idea what they are talking about. Order the roast pork w/black bean sauce, and Young Chow Fried Rice (white, Chinese style), and you will be Wo-Hop for life. It's also a little-known fact that Wo-Hop will cook American-style omlettes. There eggs are better than any diner eggs I've ever had. The fried dumplings are incredible as well. Every night at precisely 11pm, you will see Elf-Hop (a.k.a. Mr. Bong). Ask for Elf-Hop, he alone is worth the price of admission.

I am proud to be a supporter of Wo-Hop.

When you go to Chinatown, don't expect white glove treatment. These are neighborhood restaurants that are meant to provide great meals as inexpensively as possible. Wo Hop does that... till all hours of the night! After a club closes and you want something other than a diner, take a ride to Wo Hop. They will be open and the food will be great! ENJOY!!!

seems many restaurants old & new are putting more $ into looks than into genuine good ole chinese cooking (old ones with facelifts, new ones opening fancier interiors). rather pay for a good ho-down chinese than for the decor & dishes. so wo hop is one of the few remaining that hangs on to the past. tho we all have to expect prices to be higher than before. downstairs you can't be antsy about cleanliness or expect courteous svc. upstairs is more comfortable & ordering is quick (they do want turnover). food is still good after all these years. try their famous roasted 'squab' (no they don't use nyc pigeons!). SUM IT: You can try the other expensive fancier places, but if you miss this you won't be missed as this place has it's own following. Price, taste, variety - like to eat chinese then you must go.
