We went there on Friday night, 3 French people. We ordered 2 specials and one duck confit (which was not confit at all) The food was OK, nothing out of the ordinary.
The first bottle of wine was great, the second needed more air to taste as good as the first. The waiter kept pouring out wine, I had to tell him to stop as I was becoming really annoyed.
Then came the bill with an automatic gratuity of 20%!!! Did you guys think we were tourists?! The menu says that they can charge an automatic gratuity of 20% for parties of 6 or more... we were only three people!
And it's true that the music is too loud and that you have to scream if you want to talk - even though we were close to the exit.
It was a really bad experience and I will not recommend this place to anyone.

Pros: good music but too loud

Cons: Not a good service at all

.

The breakfast/brunch has been great both times I have been here. Favorites include the eggs benedict and mimosas. The music keeps you bopping along while you eat but if you don't like loud music, ask for a table further away from the band or down the back. Good place for brunch because it has a lively vibe.

the food was nice.. but the live Jazz band was too loud.. we had to scream to be heard and even then we were not able to hear each other.. also one of the waiters serving us for some reason did not want to help with our wine selection..

We recommend that you pass this message on and do not go to Jules again. As a group of 4 African Americans we were provided a check that included gratuity on it (though the policy is such that this is only to happen with large parties). When I inquired, I was told that the waitress thought that we were "foreigners." To make matters worse, tables that had received the check around us (which were filled with non-people of color) did not have this amount placed on their check. We have eaten at Jules for years--and tipped generously--yet, we will never eat there again and encourage you to go to one of the many other delicious, and inclusive french bistros in the city.

What can I say? I come to Jules maybe six times a year now because I have kids and live in midtown. I've spent my younger days eating all over St. Marks and the East Village and Jules is just one of those places that has kept the food, staff, music and all around vibe great and in tact. I love this place! These days I go more for brunch and I had a great meal there a few weeks ago, I even remember the band, "Lip Bone", an amazing jazz dude that plays horn...ahhh, without a horn. What more can you ask for? Great food, a decent wine list and they're even spotting great music for us. Oh_and if you go alone, just bring a copy of your favorite Henry Miller book...that will really complete the vibe.
Hey whatever happened to Uri? The fantastic wigged out accordian player that played everything from Bach to Bond? See you there!

Pros: Food, service overall vibe

Cons: none for me

This is a authentic French bistro with usual flavors but with good execution. Onion soup was delicious and also steak frites. Their wine selection is very good.
It is packed with little accessories which may be too much strain on the eye, but it is comfortable. Service is OK

I live in the neighborhood and have been going to Jules for several years now. They always have a great jazz band in the evenings and we take our of town guest regularly. Their menu is authentic french cuisine and they have a great wine list. We really enjoy their bunch as well on the weekends when you can sit outside. Definitely an East Village gem!

So, I had a good friend come to the city and 5 of us decided to try Jules Bistro. We made reservations, arrived on time, ordered multiple bottles of wine, extra drinks, appetizers, entrees, and dessert. We consumed a full, what was fun, meal. Music was too loud for my taste but I guess some people like that. So the bill comes, we pay, tip the full 20% and then the manager walks over and asks us to leave the table because he has another party waiting. By now, it is 11pm. My friend had just paid the bill not 5 minutes before. Now, I have been asked to get up from tables at busy restaurants before, but never have I been asked to get up from a table after spending upwards of $90 (individually) on a dinner that was mediocre at best. My friend responded quite calmly, "We'll get up when we're done." The manager launched into a tirade claiming we had been sitting there too long (of course, this is conveniently AFTER we had paid the check). After the manager literally got in my friend's face (complete with accidental spitting), my friend finally lost her cool and proceeded to tell him how rude he was being. He then snatched everything off the table and told us to "never come back again...I don't ever want to see you in my restaurant again...get out." I was stunned. In fact, as a woman, I have never had a man be so verbally abrasive to me. It was actually quite strange how rude, abrupt and combative the man was in public and as a supposed figureheard of the restaurant. The only funny thing was, no one else in the restaurant noticed the melee because it was SO LOUD in there. Would NEVER go back nor would I recommend this place to anyone else who wants a pleasant meal without spitting managers.

Cons: inexplicably rude manager

What I thought would be a promising restaurant turned out to be a poor experience. The steak frites I ordered medium rare was entirely gray and inedible. When I informed the waitress, she insisted medium rare meant a dull pink pinpoint in the very center of the steak, and then she walked away without waiting for my response or offering to check with the chef. I am not a food critic, but I know enough to know what is medium rare. Despite eating none of my steak, the waitress refused to do anything to remedy the situation. I had to call the manager who nicely offered to not charge us. Even if the cooking of the steak was not the waitress' fault, she should have at least tried to do something about my complaint. The restaurant itself is pleasant but not a 3-star restaurant, but then again is not Sizzler and I expect some decent measure of service. After I talked to the manager, the waitress gave us champagne - too little too late.

uh... this is a friendly reply to the review below. well, how do i say it...... the average tip is 18 to 20% (that is if you enjoyed your dinner and service was good). if you had any problems with your waiter - then you can leave him/her less.
sorry, but 10% on a bill that was higher than 100$ - that is just not right........

My mom was visiting me in the city so I was looking for a life music brunch.
(you know, you wanna offer out of towners something special...:)
Jules was just right for us: good music and a not too expensive menu. (eggs for $9, most expensive dish the steak for $18)
I had the mussles and they were excellent. Also I found the music was not too loud, I was prepared for it;)

Even we made a reservation we had to wait 20 minutes to be seated but the service was really good as the food was.

as to the previews review: 10% tip for good service and great food? are you kidding me?

After walking by Jules Bistro many times, I finally decided to give it a try. Not only was I disappointed with the food, but I was even more disappointed with the service. While my dinner companion was eating his appetizer, the waiter brought out his main dish! We felt totally rushed throughout the meal in a restaurant that was at most half-full. I ordered the Steak Tartare, and the meat was somewhat tough, and not that fresh. The french fries were good though. The jazz was a nice touch, but its volume was definitely on the louder side. I would not go back.

The perfect pick-me-up from that Saturday night out is brunch at Jules. The live jazz band just gets your heart singing sweet nothings in no time. Food is excellent and service is good. Live band is outstanding although they might be a bit loud if your ears are still ringing from the night before. Cute, quaint and totally French. One con: the seating is PACKED even for small restaurant standards. Don't go if being a mere 4 inches from your neighbor would scare you. Regardless, this place is a real gem.

This was the second time I have been at Jules Bistro. The food was deliscious, the location is very nice. This restaurant seemed to me like a little piece of Paris in Manhattan! It sounds wonderful but, unfortunately my experience was terribly unpleasant. We gave them over 10 % of the tip and we were attacked by 2 waiters. They came back to us, insulting and embarrasing us in front of all other customers, in front of the whole restaurant. And why? Because there seams to be an unwritten law at this place to pay a 15 % tip. If only they had communicated this in a friendly an professional way. Maybe writing it on the menu could be helpful. We gave them a 12 dollar tip, and they demanded 5 dollars more. We gave them the extra 5 dollars, even though they did not deserve it, and they shouted at us to never come back again. This may sound like a bad movie, but it is reality. I don't know what is wrong with these waiters. Maybe they just wanted to ruin some people's nice evening. One thing is for sure, we will never come back, but we hope that things like this will never happen to you. It is not a good feeling to be treated like dirty thieves after paying 125 dollars including more then 10% tip for a delicious meal and get chased from the restaurant. My boyfriend is French and he felt very sad to see waiters of a french restaurant be that unfriendly and unprofessional - But never mind, there are more then 40 other French restaurants in New York City with well behaved, civilized, and welcoming waiters.

Good Food. Excellent Service. Very reasonable prices. Expected to pay a King's ransom but didn't. However, I was a bit surprised that I did not see duck, rabbit or foie gras on the menu. Maybe those items only come up in Specials.

i like this cute little french restaurant. it's small dark and intimate. the appetizers were wonderful. we selected a cote du rhone and it went so well with my duck and everyone dishes on the table. we sat in front of a jazz band. a lil loud, but it made our stay a lil more enjoyable than usual.

Jules is the bistro that you try to find in Paris, but end up realizing doesnt exist there anymore. The combination of live jazz, great food, super friendly European service, and an affordable bill made Jules a GREAT date. The only con I can think of was the fact that the cramped space combined with the music made the place almost impossibly loud. We both got soup, and appetizer, and a main course (fabulous duck), so we didnt have space for dessert. But the friendly waitress still brought over a dessert liquor and said it was on the house, a very nice touch, and one which really rounded out a great meal.

I brought my out-of-town boyfriend here for a romantic late night dinner. The live band added to the ambience, and the food was good. Like most NY restaurants, you have to sit on top of the couple sitting next to you, but the vibe was still romantic. Great wine list!

This place has great comfort food. We've now been there twice and had great service and food both times. The onion soup isn't as good as Balthazar, but the hangar steak was excellent. I also had a filet mignon there that was wonderful. The noise level depends on where you sit. The back room is quieter. Front room is near the band and is good for drinks aprez meal. This is a great casual dining experience with friends, but not great for a quiet romantic evening or first date.

the place as many have mentioned is noisy...a combination of live jazz and the voices of people screaming over each other. that coupled with the extremely slow service made for a very dissapointing evening. if the food had tasted better the experience might have been tolerable, but the tuna tartare was bland, the filet i ordered medium rare was instead rare and the vegetables were overcooked. the thought of sending the steak back was quickly dismissed when reminded of the extremely slow service...i did not want to stay any longer than necessary.

Have been to Jules many times and it's always a treat. The music is great, and varies from night to night. The pre-theater menu is a great value. The fish is yummy, as is the sangria. The patio with ivy is great in the summer, and in the winter the restaurant is really cozy. The manager is very accomodating. It's a little hard to get the waiters' attention, but everything else is great!

I had dinner at Jules yesterday evening. The food was great - authentically French - but my dinner was spoiled by the terrible noise in this restaurant. There happened to be a jazz band playing between 8:30 and 11:30 and their music was so loud that I had to shout to make myself heard to my friend. I will NEVER go there again and I recommend you think twice before taking a date to this place.

We were guests at your restaurant on Saturday, June 18.
French are infamous for having a rude service but I have been to France multiple times and never did I have this type of experience. Well, all I needed to do is to go to Jules.
The service was horrible. The food was good but an attitude your waitress had, was awful.
Unfortunately, I did not read reviews about your place in time. Apparently, it is quite a typical experience at your place. Want to ruin Saturday evening, just go to Jules!

My family went to Jules on Mothers Day. Jules offers a prix-fix menu from 5:30PM to 7:00 PM everyday. We all arrived at 5:30. When we were seated the waiter gave us the regular menu. My nephew inquired if the prix-fix was available and he said yes. The waiter then scurried around for copies. He then told us that there was only one steak left and that there would be no substitutions. My niece explained that was why we had chosen Jules and he still stated there would be no substitutions. We asked to speak to the manager, a sloppy looking individual, who abruptly stated no substitutions, no more steak and stormed away. We looked at each other in disbelief and proceeded to leave!!! If you are interested in being verbally abused, Jules is for you. OTHERWISE go somewhere in area like we did and have pleasant and delicious meal.

For what it's worth, I'd like to point out that I try to avoid knee-jerk reviews full of complaints. However, for those of you that might think that means my review is to be ignored, you should weigh in the fact that I am at present overwhelmed with joy at the prospect that I am now out of this restaurant and never have to return. In summary: a terribly obnoxious and impolite host, a long and cramped wait for a table (complete with a mediocre bartender and drinks), more bad host, a calamari appetizer that may have actually been a joke, an hour's wait for our entrees, and tough chop-away-at-it veal. Despite a lovely atmosphere, this was perhaps the worst dining experience I've had in New York. With a glut of wonderful surrounding restaurants, Jules is to be avoided.

Despite a lovely atmosphere, this was perhaps the worst dining experience I've had in New York. With a glut of wonderful surrounding restaurants, Jules is to be avoided.

Pros: Ambience

Cons: Terrible service, Crowded, Low-class host

I made reservations for 3 for a birthday dinner only to arrive and find they had lost our reservation. Luckily they were able to seat us an hour later after we went elsewhere for drinks. Food was delicious, atmosphere was lovely and the jazz was great, plus the waiters sang happy birthday in french. Considering how crowded the place was, I was amazed they didn't try to hurry us out but for the most part we had to get their attention when we needed something (like bread). We were able to sit for an hour or so after dinner talking and listening to the music which totally made up for the reservation hassle. A nice mix of couples and groups.

Dropped by twice this summer; first time for a hearty "What happened?" brunch for two; coffee was strong, outdoor table had plenty of fresh air, and a nice plate of eggs benedict at a good price -- gotta love it. Second time was a dinner for five; busy, but seated us promptly to the strains of live jazz. Beef carpaccio dizzied, frites pleased along with the moules they accompanied. Sangria disappeared almost as quickly as the flourless chocolate cake and creme brulee. Staff was great, restaurant was charming -- next time you need a bistro, go Jules.

Having never tried French food but wanting to experience something European I decided to give this place a shot. I wasn't all dazzled with the food, it was good but I guess my salmon was a little too bland. My friends loved everything they ate. I'm not criticizing their food, just French fare in general.

I made reservations that evening, got seated promptly by a great host. Our server was prompt and curteous. We stayed for nearly three hours. This reminded me of back home in Europe where you go out to dinner and talk, laugh, and stay therefor hours. I would go back.

This is a great under the radar french restaurant.
I found it on citysearch and took a good friend there for a girls' night for her birthday.
The place was great- food was great, service with a smile and it is a great romantic date place.

I live in the neighborhood & have been a regular at Jules for a year & a half. Authentic French bistro ambiance that doesn't quit; friendly barmaids; cool froggie electronica. Free homemade toasts with olive tapanade, goat cheese & eggplant puree are aswsome before about 7:30 p.m., after which they dry out. Roast chicken over mash is great, as are the duck confit & lamb stew. Well-priced pre-theatre menu. Passable wines by the glass; fresh tap beers; nice calvados & armagnacs; tasty champagne cocktails; so-so sangria. After 9:00, free live jazz seven nights a week (always organic Afro-Cuban, Brazilian or Gypsy guitar swing ala' Django Reinhardt). A truly cool subterranean French jazz bar & eatery on St. Mark's Place. I keep going back & recommending it (and walk my golden retriever past every night of the year and wave at 'em.)

Mediocre french food and mixed service. Only great dish was the steak tartare but they randomly take it off their menues. Mussels were suspiciously huge and tasteless, pate was bland. Wine overpriced. Vibe can be fun, especially when they have live music, but overall, average.

When asked to be moved to one of the million empty tables we were barked at by the maitre d'/manager-on-a-power-trip that they were "all reserved, so very busy, blah, blah, blah". So we stayed in the first of three empty deuces in the back. We cheated and slid into the middle table & 20 minutes later we were very loudly and VERY rudely scolded ("why you sit here when I sit you there? I say to you there are reservations and you move, no you must be where I put you..." etc.) and made to slide back, because THAT table was also reserved. This would not have ticked us off so much if he wasn't such a jerk about it AND NO ONE EVER SAT THERE ANYHOW!

Food was good, not exceptional. Our Cindy Lauper-meets-Cindy Brady waitress was darling and helpful. Too bad her boss is a pill.

This is a FRENCH-THEMED restaurant, not a FRENCH restaurant. With the boring food, the easy-listening jazz, the retro-1950s feel, and the corny French street signs on the walls, it feels like you've stepped into French World at Epcot Center. The maitre'd apparently decided that blatant rudeness was part of the act: he seated us at a lousy table, then loudly berated us when we moved to another empty spot nearby (he said it was reserved, but then he never seated anybody there, and the restaurant was far from full). The food was serviceable but boring. The waitress was nice, but her priority was clearly upselling expensive wines. This place has no idea how to treat its customers. JULES STINKS.

We went here for Christmas dinner last year and had a wonderful time. We had the escargot, boullabaise and filet mignon. Only prob was owner's French friends smoking next to us in non-smoking section. Ah, the French!

I am french, and I hated Jules.
The waiters were french and yet persisted in speaking english to me! They were rude, brought me the wrong order and contradicted me. (For the record, a croque madame is a croque monsieur with tomatoes, not an egg.)
Don't go.

Being French is no excuse for the lousy service that we received. Yes, our French friends are known to show a little attitude from time to time, but they do understand the basics of the dining experience - something neither our waitress nor the maitre d' seemed to. Rude, inattentive service, endless waits without any explanation for the food, an inability to respond to our complaints. Yes, the food was excellent once it arrived, but you've got to be some kind of sucker to live with such terrible service just to get decent food. This is NY, after all, so we have plenty of choices. I'd say, try somewhere else - this is too much of a lottery.

Somehow, my friends and I always end up here when we go out. Stepping inside is like being transported to a European cafe. The service is a bit hurried yet friendly and attentive. The choices of wine seems never ending and the food is great. Add a live jazz trio to the mix and you have a perfect night.

For the price, you would expect at least adequate service. Not here. Not only did our server tag team serve us with the ladies RIGHT next to us, he didn't offer us specials, so we assumed there weren't any. (We found out later there were. Then (here's the kicker), when I figured out the reason that I didn't like the bottle of wine we ordered, I pointed it out to him. The red wine was cold from being in the cellar...white wine cold. When I pointed this out to him, the response was, "Well this is New York. Leave it on the table for a bit and let it warm up." Yes, I should have noticed it right away, but that's not the point. Then he was inattentive for the rest of the evening. Honestly the WORST service I have ever had in NYC. Food was good, though.

I have been to Jules several time with my friends and we always have an amazing time there. The music is great and the food is typically divine, especially the tuna tartar, which should not be missed! I would recommend this restaurant to anyone!

i have been to jules maybe 8 times in the past 3 years. sometimes it can be amazing, sometimes not so great. occasionally i get thrown at the crappy table, rushed, etc. then there are times like when my date and i asked for the check sans desert and the maitre d' insisted on serving us a delightful aperatif on the house. they just re-did the menu- steaks are nothing special, the frites arent as good and they got rid of their one vegetarian dish. all in all, be safe and make a reservation, the bread is amazing, and the wine is all fantastic. sure, it's romantic, but it can be loud at times. the live jazz is always great but then the musicians beg for tips. sit outside. or hang at the bar. oh yeah and bring ca$h.

All was well until maitre d' asked us to leave as a big table was coming in. We had been there only one hour and 15 minutes and just been served coffee and had all (4 people) ordered 3 courses and a $45 bottle of wine. We felt rushed and will never go back.

With a city the size of New York, chosing a restaurant can be a frightening task; you never know when you will end up in an over-priced greasy-spoon. On my first visit to Jules', I all of my fears melted away. Great restaurant for dates, friends, or just relaxation. Unbelievable food and great prices. I will be in town again soon, and have already made reservations. A+!!!

... which means that the food is terrific, but the service is not. But don't be turned off - this place is worth the slow-going attitude and sometimes spotty services for its delicious French classics like the steak frites, duck, escargot. The wine is in general a good deal and they have some interesting choices. The room is dark and smokey, but it's the real deal. The live jazz is a nice touch, as long as you aren't sitting too close. Jules is a great place in a fun neighborhood - for dinner with friends or a date. Try the patio/sidewalk seating in the summer.

After living in Lyons as a little girl, I miss the cozy restaurants with relaxed waiters, quality ingredients, and warm service. Jules may be on St. Mark's, often crowded, and near the NYU buzz, but only an absolute moron would have something negative to say about this place. Yes! You can SMOKE. YES! You can eat a full meal with wine for under 30 bucks a person. Yes! They have great local jazz and three piece nsembles certain evenings. And YES! The wine list is not imaginative, but rock solid.
