The bottom line is that Joseph's is really good with hair. They use great products and the stylist there are professional. My only problem is that it cost way to much for the wait. At those prices, I would expect better service!

I still can't get over NYC10027's review, it was waaay over processed and sounds very off compared to my experience and everyone else. I get my hair cut by clarence and my Wife is fortunate enough to get on Joe Jr's schedule (owner and lead stylist). I admit, sometimes I sneak off to my other barber because the cuts for a guy can be $35-$40 BUT i've never had a complaint, get a wash with my cut, done quickly and my wife does nothing but rave about her hair. Since we moved to Maryland a year ago, we still come to Joseph's once a month because my wife won't let anyone else touch her hair. I am waiting for the renovation to be over with, the place is looking better and I appreciate they didn't close down but it will be great once it's completed.

I had the absolute worst experience at this place. Each time I thought they were about to turn the corner, they managed to surprise me and revert back to incompetence and unprofessionalism at its peak.

I made an appointment with a girlfriend who had visited the salon previously. Like me, she has natural hair that she wears straightened (roller set and blow dry). It's not that I was unhappy with my uptown blow-out salon, but that I was hoping to get a more professional cut elsewhere and would be somewhat forgiving if they didn't manage to style my hair as well as my regular salon could, so long as the cut was good.

The cut was fine. The downside however, began when I arrived before my friend who'd scheduled our appointments. I was immediately "swooped up" by an over-eager male stylist near the front of the salon, already working on a head. I gave him our names, he mentioned a stylist, but informed me that he would be taking care of me. I suppose this is all my fault. But I thought that a chic downtown salon would have capable stylists in every chair. I assented to my assignment to his chair though when my friend arrive she was skirted upstairs to the stylist in whose name both our appointments had been booked.

He and I had words over the length of time I'd need to spend under the dryer (I've never required more than 30 minutes, he insisted on one full hour, and then sent his mother (another stylist at the salon) to coerce me into the full hour; I conceded the point, primarily because I wanted to give no reason for their failure to perform)).

After the drying, I returned (after waiting a half hour while he roller set another charge) at which point he commenced to "blowing" my hair out. Either their tools are sophomoric or they are. I watched in absolute horror as he attempted to blow my hair out. The primary purpose of my visit was a professional cut. I mentioned to him that I did not want a straight blow out (who does?!) but one with curls and waves and body. I was informed that he was unable to do so and to do the cut as well (mind you, he could have offered to cut the hair wet as he was apprised of the extent of my requests prior to beginning). I conceded the cut (because honestly, he probably didn't know what he was doing anyway). He blow dryed the hair. Not at all straight. I could have done a better job at home alone. After sensing my frustration, he didn't apologize, but huffed off and called his "mother" over to "fix it."
Kimmy is very nice. She is a sweet woman and nice conversationalist. Unfortunately, she came over, and without my assent, began to flat iron my hair (all the while preaching to me the virtues of relaxers and texturizers). She did a great trim. I don't have unruly hair; it simply requires competent stylists. I didn't happen to meet any today.

To add insult to injury, my friend had informed me that a wash, set and cut would be $65.00. My grand total? $150.00. I was charged for the flat iron I didn't request and that was only required due to my initial stylist's incompetence (reminder, one who had "stolen" me from the stylist I was booked for) and also charged for the services of the "senior stylist" (his mother). I'm unsure what the remaining charges were for as I did not stick around long enough to inquire as I was utterly and totally disgusted by those people.

You FAIL at hair. Kimmy, you were nice and personable, but that doesn't escape the fact that I settled for what I got there, and at the end of the day was still over charged (even after I was set on tipping both of you for at least attempting to rectify the situation).

And I won't even get into the fact of supposed "african-american" salons being totally taken aback when affronted with natural hair (and let me tell you, mine is as fine and eager to be straightened as they come; my Dominican stylists don't even notice). Shame on you.

I worked at Joseph's Salon years ago and I can say that they have always been great and very professional. I strongly recommend the Hair Stylist by Joseph's family.

Pros: The best African American salon for years

I finally made an appointment with Walter after having a simple haircut messed up by another salon. I have been in NYC now for a year and have tried no less than six salons. This salon IS expensive but it is worth it. My hair is long, tangled, wavy, bushy and frizzy and they handled it with care and with no problems. Other salons i have been to complain about the texture of my hair and recommend a relaxer every other week! I cannot speak for any of the other stylists, but I absolutely loved Walter. He is professional, knowledgeable, and most importantly, he LISTENED to what I wanted. I wanted a certain hair cut and I walked out with EXACTLY that. This is the best my hair has looked since I've been in NYC. I may have to sell a couple of body parts and take out a loan but I WILL be back! Give this salon a try!!! You won't regret it!!!

i chose to go to joseph's after visiting a few other NYC salons. it is very difficult to find a good hair salon that cares about the health of your hair, is unpretentious, and doesn't make you wait forever to get into the chair!

i had a pleasant experience in getting a wash and roller set. my stylist did not put a bunch of gunk in my hair, nor did i leave the salon in some outdated bouffant. lol. i never had to wait long in between processes and the same person did my hair the entire time. there was no shampoo person or any of that.

anyway, i would highly recommend this place for others with relaxed hair. it's a little pricey but i don't have a problem paying for quality.

I've been traveling to NYC twice a month for a week at time for the last 11 months. It took me some time to find salon that specialized in black hair in the City. After many of other trys, Joseph's is the spot. I've used Yvette and Bill, but Walter is by the far the best. Not only is a delight, but he is simply excellent. My hair is in great shap and it looks fantastic. Check it out!

Without question this is the best salon that I?ve ever been too. Being African American, our choices of quality hair salons are limited, especially in NY. When I called for an appointment they were very professional and helpful. Although they are currently under renovations, it does NOT inconvenience the customers in any way. When I arrived to my appointment, Walter (the senior stylist) was already waiting for me! I told Walter that I wanted a touch-up relaxer and a cut and after examining my hair, he immediately got to work. I have never had a perm worked through so thoroughly before. He moved quickly so that my scalp wouldn?t burn, but he also made sure that the chemicals were placed properly so that my hair wouldn?t be over processed. The shampoo was great and felt more like a massage. He cut my hair while it was wet, which I?ve never had done before. After setting me in rollers, and placing me under the dyer, I was back in his chair. Once he removed the rollers he used a hand-held dryer and a round brush to smooth the hair. He then went back into my hair to cut layers. He didn?t put too many products in my hair, which would have weighed it down. Besides the leave-in conditioner, the only other thing he used was a serum to calm a few fly-aways. Also he didn?t use a flat iron! I didn't have to worry about smelling of burnt hair. Walter created perfection without excess heat?. I have never had so much body in my hair before. I shook my hair every which way and because it was such a great cut, the hair fell right back into place. I felt the quality of my cut could compare to any of the top Caucasian salons in the area. Walter stresses the importance of healthy hair so if you?re looking for a gelled up, colored up style typical of lower class salons, then this is not the place for you. They will not compromise the integrity of your hair! My hair was simply chic and young which is what I wanted. I was left feeling EXTREMELY satisfied.

I found out about HBJ when I saw a women who's hair I liked a year ago when I first moved to New York. I since went there on 3 separate occasions with appointments with Walter: 2x for touch ups and 1x for color. All three times I was disappointed in the time it took for me to be taken for my appointment. The waits each time were over 1 hour and each time there were profuse apologies saying, "It's not always like this" or "Try booking on a weekday." HBJ instead should not be greedy and not overbook their stylists - a major problem with many black salons. Why is it that white women are able to go in and out of a salon, also for chemical treatments, without having to wait hours on end? We got to do better!
When booking appointments I thought it was odd that they didn't take down my information - something I had grown accustomed to at similarly priced salons. Also, they don't do hair files on their clients to track their needs and treatments. Another sign of poor client care.
Regarding actual services rendered, the relaxer did straighten my hair, but the styling was too old fashioned - I'm 27 years old and I've walked out of there with bouffants even after showing pictures of how I want my hair styled. For my color treatment, I had to leave the next day to see my fiance who lives overseas and stressed to Walter the color I was looking for and that I needed a noticeable change of color in my hair. $200+ and 4 hours later my hair was virtually the same color. My fiance, who had paid for the color, was ticked off. Walter explained that color is damaging, but I've had color before (healthily) and have seen black women with similar texture hair that's colored so I didn't understand why he assured me my hair would be noticeably lighter when it wasn't. This was the last straw and I would not recommend coming here in the future. Additionally, the salon has been under construction for over a year and is a very uncomfortable experience. Your money is better spent elsewhere.

I have never had long hair! Until I started going to Joe's about 3-4 yrs ago. I have always wore weaves but I was tired of the up keep. I started with damaged short hair when I started going to Evette, and today my hair is down my back, thick and healthy. They are more expensive but they also focus more on HAIR CARE, so if you just want a hard stiff look to last for hrs go some where else. If you want hair thats soft, healthy and easy to manage on your own then go to Joe's. I don't like my hair over styled or too many hair products. I always have people stop me to ask about my hair, but I tell them, I don't do much to it any more, I let my stylist take care of it. It has worked and I trust them. I also visit the Dominicans on those broke days but only for basic service, they do too much heat damage trying to get my hair bone straight and it ends up looking thin and limp. Thats not for me, I like thick hair. Give Hair by Joe a try!

Other great (oh and fine ;) stylist there are- Walter, Lil Joe, and Clarence!

Would recommend as there are so few black hair salons in Manhattan...however, must say it is very pricey and cut is not entirely worth the price.

I have been a customer of Joseph's Hair Salon for years and they do the best hair care there. It's family owned and they use the best products on your hair. It can be pricer than the normal local hair shop but you pay for what you get. The service is impeciable. I go to Walter he is one of the best there and lil Joe and Bill and Kimmy they are all EXCELLENT, Clarence too.

I know the entire family. You will not be disappointed. I have traveled all the way from Westchester County to go there and my Sister lives all the way in Virginia to go to Joseph's.

This is the best, upscale, hair salon! If you are looking for hair care and want your hair to grow successfuly this is the place to go!!!!!

I've been going to Josephs for years. It's great because everyone leaves there with incredibly shiny and gorgeous looking hair, which is perfect if you are going to an event that night. However, in my experience (and I've had my hair done by multiple stylists and this outcome has been the same) the style just doesn't last as long as other places I've gone. Its like the potion they use for all that shine and glamour also makes your hair more susceptible to teeny drops of rain or the slightest humidity. Nevertheless, I still go there because they are good and they get you in and out there quickly (may take a bit longer on Saturdays, but never anything too extreme). I go to Clarence--he's awesome and the fastest! Yvette is S-L-O-W, but she's good. But I'm not lying when I say she is ridiculously slow moving, setting, washing--everything! If you're looking for weekly wash and sets and you are a recent grad or something (in other words--no dough!), I recommend Betty's on 132nd Street and Lenox...it's a Dominican place that's does a wash and set for $12 and they do a decent job. Don't know if I'd get a perm, color or anything else there though. Good luck!

I just recently relocated from Washington DC and of course was nervous about finding a salon. In prepartion I asked my former salon [Bill Lawerence salon---fantastic by the way for those of you going to DC---in Adams Morgan] who I should look into. Without hesitation they suggested Hair Styling by Joseph and mentioned a stylist named "Walter". On my first visit I instead got a stylist named Ali who was great! I was sooo impressed with her knowledge of hair care and maintenance AND the fact that she could tell I had been going to a good salon in DC just by studying my hair!!! Yes, its pricey, but it was very similar to what I paid in DC...I highly recommend this salon, relaxed atmosphere, professional staff and clientele...and down the street from Bloomingdales! Who can beat that? :]

I highly recommend this salon. A bit pricy but worth every penny.
My stylist, Walter, gave me a funky cut that I was not expecting.
I walked in uncertain and I thought I was only going to get a shape up but instead
I got a chic cut that I have received many compliments on.

I highly recommend this salon. A bit pricy but worth every penny.
My stylist, Walter, gave me a funky cut that I was not expecting.
I walked in uncertain and I thought I was only going to get a shape up but instead
I got a chic cut that I have received many compliments on.
Both men and women have complimented men on the new look.

Pros: sanitary, clean, professional

Cons: a bit pricy

.

I have been going here for 6 months now and I love my hair. They dont use a lot of heat or harsh chemicals which can destroy our hair. My stylist listens to me, and doesnt over style my hair, and my boyfriend loves my hair now. Thanks Joe ;)
