TOGA IS COMPLETELY UNSAFE. DO NOT GO HERE FOR ANY SERVICE!!!!! THEY WANTED ME TO RIDE ON A CRACKED FRONT FORK BECAUSE THEY CAN'T TELL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN A SCRATCH AND A CRACK.

I was in a bicycle crash. I went in to get an insurance quote to repair my bike before having them repair it. They refused to look at the bike close enough to determine what was actually damaged (the huge dent in the top tube, the crack in the fork, the irreparable front wheel). I know someone who had a front fork failure while they were riding -- they lost all of their front teeth.

I had thought someone who said, "I have insurance that is going to pay for whatever is needed to fix this, and they also offered to pay for an inspection" would get a reasonable estimate that would cover everything. Instead he argued with me about what was damaged. He was honestly worse than an insurance claims adjuster.

Aside from their unsafe and unhelpful tendencies, the staff is incompetent. You can take my word for it but if you want details, continue reading.

The staff tried to tell me that every year this years Dura-Ace is moved down the line and a new line replaces it. First of all, Dura-Ace isn't even re-vamped every year (the most recent iterations, ignoring electronic shifting, were released in 2003, 2008, and 2012). The line below it, Ultegra, was revamped in off years from Dura Ace. If Dura Ace was "moved down" it would have to be done in the SAME year -- instead of overlapping. Aside from that there are of course real technical differences.

First, the weight. The Dura Ace 7800 is close to a quarter pound lighter (I know it sounds stupid but road cyclists can be weight weenies) than the so-called-replacement, Ultegra 6600. But if that weren't enough, there are a plethora of other differences. For example, the 7800 Dua-Ace rear derailleur has ball bearing pulleys while "replacement" Ultegra bushings. The Dura-Ace brakes use two sets of ball bearings pivots while the Ultegra uses one set of bearings and one set of bushings. Clearly not a make or break differences but they are illustrative of the differences and TOGA's incompetence.

In the end I walked out and went to a shop that cares whether I lose all my teeth, and you should too.

i live w 3 guys and we all are avid cyclists. We all shop Toga and have bought multiple bikes there as well as get our bikes serviced there regularly. Prices are fair, mechanics are great, and they have a big selection of stuff in general. The online reviews don't represent what most in the cycling community think of this store. I personally feel it's ahem a jealous competitor writing a lot of the reviews. I have lived all over the city and travel out of my way to go to Toga after using several other stores over the years.
I don't understand the bad reviews because in my opinion it's a well run store and most of they guys who ride in the park prefer to go to Toga because they have some of the best mechanics in NYC.
Everyone has an opinion and this is mine. TOGA is FIRST CLASS and has always been good to me!

I bought my first bike here 11yrs ago when I weighed 300lbs. I am now 180lbs thanks in part to the guys at Toga. They always treated me with rcomplete respect......even when I could barely pull my leg over the bike to get on it...

I recently acquired a bicycle which needed some general repairs and a tune up. I used Toga because it was near my office. I also needed a new helmet and secure lock.
Toga turned me away. I was told they were too busy to help me or repair my bike. Even minimal repairs. And I couldn't leave my non-functioning bike there until someone had time to work on it.
I was appalled but desperate. My bike was not safe to ride home or even to another bike shop. I hauled it over my shoulder and carried the wheel back to my office. Nearly tore off my shoulder in the process. Oh, and I tried putting it in 3 different taxis so that I could take it home. It wouldn't fit.
I called Toga the next day and told them about the rude service and how I was turned away. They said to bring it in again and they would look at it. So I did. And they said it would be ready in 8 days. Fine. Whew! And the price was reasonable.
Luckily I didn't give them any money up front, nor did they request a deposit.
20 minutes later, Toga called my cell phone, informing me that they could not work on my bike because of the long wait for repairs. I was to pick up my bike immediately.
To which I'm thinking, "Then why did you say you could take it?" And, how are you ever going to fix my bike if you don't have it on the premise? Toga doesn't take appointments. Walk-ins only. First come, first served. ERRRRRRRRR????????? Was I in Russia? Ukraine? Can ya just put me in the queue?
They didn't want my money? They turned away my business? Unbelievable. I wish I had not been so desperate for a repair.
As a business, how can you say you will do something and then re-neg on it? Or, blatantly lie.
I called Pedal Pushers on the East Side and they were more than happy to take my business. Roger at Pedal Pushers is a great fellow.
The only good thing I can say about the jerk offs at Toga is that they did offer to take my bike to Pedal Pushers. I'm pretty sure that's not a standard procedure, but after I informed them that what they did to me was unacceptable, and that I would trash word-of-mouth them until my dying day, as well as on the internet, they offered to transport my bike.
Steer clear of Toga Bike Shop. You'll be better off.
Here, a One-Star Rating is "Eh". In this case, it should be zero stars. Meaning, "wow does this place blow".

Pros: located close to my office

Cons: to many to mention....

The shop offers a great selection and reasonable prices. On that score, they are comparable to Sid's Bikes. But, Toga's service and customer relations are terrible. Aside from the small group of highly knowledgeable salespeople, quite a number of their sales rep (i.e. those who deal with accessories) don't know much about products and don't really care about service. Some of the accessories that I ordered and had installed there were simply different from those I had specified, while other accessories were omitted altogether. Of course, Toga charged full price and then offered up their "no refunds" policy as a way of making me, the dissatisfied customer that spent over $1,300, go away. When I proceeded to ask for the manager, the sales rep asked, "do you want me to lose my job?" Needless to say, they are happy to sell you the bike, but not happy to do much else for you. It's all the more odd considering that most of the profit is made off accessories rather than the bikes themselves. In fairness, when I finally did reach the manager, I was re-credited. I'm just surprised and disappointed with how things turned out. Depending on what you're looking for, check out Sid's Bikes or Nycewheels instead.

I took my mtn. bike for a full tuneup and some minor work. I was told it would take about a week which was not a problem. After being contacted that my bike was ready I got to the store to see that there was work not done to it. When i dropped it off I had a new headset to put on and some work done to new bike handles that I purchased online. When getting my bike back the headset was not put on and only one bike handle was fixed. When I asked to tech about the headset he looked at me like I was crazy and had no idea what I meant or where it was. After looking he found it and to return in an hour to get my bike. When i returned after an hour it was not ready and had to wait another 45min. When asked about the other brake lever I was told they didn`t have the part and it would have to be ordered. It would take about a week, not a problem. After I got the bike home I noticed that one of the brand new brake levers was all marked up and one of the new bar plugs for the new handgrips I put on was completely different. I called the store, talked to a manager and was told it would be taken care of . After 12 days and Not receiving a call I called and was told the part had come in. Not sure why I wasn`t contacted. Was told I could bring the bike in and didn`t see why I couldn`t have the bike back that day. I dropped the bike off and was told it would be ready at 6pm. Returning at 6:30pm and waiting 25min. i was told it still wasn`t finished and it would be ready the following day after 12 noon. That`s where I`m at for now and without my bike!

I went to Toga on 63rd Street to get a couple of new tires for an old (20+ years) 10-speed. The tires had a $30 price tag and I was told there would probably be a $10 service charge to install. They wound up charging me $34.99 per tire and an additional $7.00 per tire for installation for a grand total of $91. Not even a bait and switch, just plain robbery! Never again will I go there. My friend who cycles told me better!

The Key at Togo for any service is to be attractive or to have an expensive bike. Back in the day it had to be a Pantagraphed Colnago or Guerciotti. If you are good looking you get waited on first. If you have a "Pro Bike" it is helpful also. If they judge you are a schmoo off the street they could care less.

If You are Carlos Santana dropping off Sri Chinmoy's white Frejus for service you will be waited on. The rest of us are not worthy. And we will have to come back another time to be...

I have been to Toga a couple of times and my experiences have been very bad. First, I have found it difficult to get questions answered by their less than knowledgeable staff. I wanted some new tires for my road bike and nobody could help me pick a new set. They seem more interested in talking with their buddies in the store. I bought something marked 14.99 and they charged me 19.99. No big deal and they cleared it up when I went back. I also bought, what I was told was a Craft baselayer but it turned out to be a regular sleeveless-T which is a little too heave to wear under a jersey in the summer (I wear bib shorts and like a base layer under my jersey). When I went back, I found out they have a very strict no return policy. I could have store credit which, frankly, I don't plan on shopping there anymore so I didn't really want the store credit. This no return policy seems very strange and has convinced me not to shop there every again. There are too many bike shops in the city to put up with bad service from one just because it is convenient.

I am a grad student and on a budget. I have patronized Toga Bike Shop for almost 8 years. The sales guys have always been nice and knowledgeable and their pricing is VERY COMPETITIVE. Trust me....I checked around other shops before I bought my first bike with them. I like the sales guys because they will direct you to the "best buy" within your budget. I commute daily on my bike and the mechanics have kept my bike tuned up nicely and at a reasonable cost. My best friend,an amateur bike racer from England, always gets his bike tuned at Toga when he is in NY for a race. I've sent all kinds of people to Toga because they have always given me a fair deal and I consider them friends. And, last....if you're a busy person, they actually answer your emails from their website in a timely manner. That's one of my favorite things about them.;)

One of the worst establishments I've had to deal with, and that's coming off the heels of many local bike shop visits elsewhere. I used to stop in every so often due to its convenient location ( having lived 3 blocks away ), but that soon proved to a bad reason to go at all. Every time I've walked in, the staff has been seemingly uninterested in tending to customers. Despite my having explained what it is I need or am looking for gear-wise, I have consistently been forced to repeat key details. It's as though sub-par or incorrect items and accessories are being forced upon me, and if they're not sub-par, they're atrociously expensive, That said, more often than not, the response I've gotten is "You're beat," or "Nah we don't have that," when the solution has time and time again proven to rest a few minutes away at another shop (which I won't name here). Aside from their truly reprehensible mode of sales conduct, their repairs are worth cautioning against. Twice I've seen them destroy simple tasks. My roommate picked up his bike after a tune-up only to have to bring it in the next day to have a wheel trued (they somehow missed that key step???). On another occasion I witnessed a gentleman pick up his bike only to walk out of the store and realize that the mechanics had neglected to tuck the inner tube, which had been overinflated, underneath the tire beads. He angrily returned into the store and asked them to explain themselves.

For this store's reputation, the staff should consider themselves an embarrassment. For your bicycle needs, I strongly suggest you go elsewhere.

The first turnoff was employees smoking outside. At a bike shop claiming to have former racers as employees? Come on. The next turn off was the "heavy" dude working inside that claimed to be such a smooth rider through the City for some reason that I can't even remember. Next he went on a 10 minute tirade about gel seats and ED when all I really wanted were some answers to basic questions. I'll be skipping TOGA bikes next time I go shopping.

Guy at the register was nice.

i tried their rentals 3-4 times and eventually bought a bike there. reason?? mainly because of the savvy staff, they are the best and they can spot the problem and explain to us in "human words". the bikes are pretty reasonable plus, i go there everytime when my bike needs a bit tune up and it's free!

PROS: great service!

I just finished buying my first new bike in 12 years at Toga , I had been shopping around for quite some time and experienced what can only be described as Boy's club mentality at every shop I had been to. I walked into Toga on Saturday and I was admitedly nervous about all the people mulling around and asking questions of the Sales staff. They were very busy but they seemed to take it in Stride. I took a walk around the neatly arranged store and was greeted with a Hello and How are you by at least 4 different people who were involved with customers at the time. One of the salesmen "Hobie" was tending to a customer and he very calmly acknowledged my admiring the bikes hanging up on the ceiling and asked if I was being helped. I replied no and he then said that he'll be right with me rather than avoiding eye contact like in other shops I had been to. After about 5 minutes he came to me with a warm smile and started to ask me why I needed a bike, sounds silly but he was geniuinely interested in what I had to say and waited through my condensed version of my life story and we came to a conclusion as to what kind of bike best suited my needs. He brought out two bikes for me to test ride, telling me to really zone into what I felt on either bike while I was testing it. The first bike was a Giant Cypress (I think) , the second bike was a Specialized Sirrus (the bike I bought). I reported back to him what I felt on each bike and he disected the info like a mad scientist of bikes, and we both agreed the Sirrus was the bike for me. He then recommended I buy a bicycle computer with cadence, He told me it was the only way I would ever learn how to use the gears and enjoy the bike. He gave me a quick lesson on how I should be pedaling and after a helmet ,some shorts , a water bottle I was on my way. Big Love and gratitude goes out to Hobie and the people at Toga bikes for treating me like a Pro.

Pros: Great atmosphere, Not intimidating, great music playing.

Cons: Need Hobie clones !

Extremely expensive, average products and rude service!
they think they are better than new yorkers.

the staff is incredibly friendly, helpful, and lack attitude. they didn't give me a hassle when i wanted to test ride some bikes. they take care of their customers really well.

when they're busy, they're BUSY so if you're looking for exceptionally attentive service, try going on a weekday during non-rush hours.

I've never bought a bike here, but have brought several of my own bikes in for tune-up and repair and they do a great job every time. They turn around the bike pretty quickly and also take the time to explain what they think needs to be done and what they did and why.

Excellent service, knowledgeable staff. I visited this shop thinking i wanted one thing, but after explaining my needs to them, i realized i needed something entirely different. I was not ready to purchase until i shopped around. Once i did, i found the same bike for $100 cheaper, but the service was horrible. I go back to Toga, they beat the price but knock off another $20...

Well it happened, I bought another bike from these guys. My friend has been trying to get me to Mountain Bike for years and I finally tried it on one of Toga's Demo mountain bikes. They measured me and told me I was a small and then proceeded to bring me a Specialized "Epic" mountain bike in bright green. I used it for the weekend for $100 and I was told that I can then use the $100 as credit towards a Specialized bike purchase. The bike was awesome ! It had a shock in the front and back and I was told by my salesman John that it would really aid me since I was a beginner to have Shocks on the back too. My friend and I went riding down in a park called "Hartchorne" in NJ. It was so much fun, even if I did fall twice. I think it's going to be the start of a new sport for me. John had also recommended the park to ride in and gave me directions too. I think he mentioned he lived near it. Well the weekend was over and I was hooked. I went to return the bike and John couldn't help me at the time but he introduced me to another salesman named Mike who showed me the exact bike I had road and it was on sale! That was it , I had to have it. They prepped it out and outfitted me with a wireless computer and bottle cages . The $100 I had used to rent the demo was also placed towards my purchase. Mike set my seat height and even swapped my stem for a slightly shorter one due to my shorts arms. I love this Bike ! Heck I love Mountain Biking ! Heck I'm a female Mountain Biker !!!! WOO HOO! Go see these guys , that's two good experiences and counting !
