Went on a monday night and had the tasting menu. It's true, you shouldn't order fish on a monday (at least at One if by Land) first course; hamachi, fishy, slimy, overly salty and otherwise inedible. Next was a dorado, fishy, uninspired. So far off to a bad, if not nauseating start. Fois Gras, hard to mess this one up.. it was pleasant and as expected. Main course; beef wellington, probably the most popular dish here, it was all over the menu, it was adequate, if under-flavored. Dessert was a strawberry rhubarb concoction that was over-complicated, with such fresh seasonal ingredients, why try so hard? The dessert was the only part of the meal that I could describe as "fresh". The room is beautiful (think Sign of the Dove) but the food was mostly a disaster, service was acceptable. Not recommended.

When my boyfriend and I stepped into this restaurant, we immediately felt transported into a different, romantic, old world era. What was previously a stable for horses has since been transformed into a most beautiful dining room complete with crackling fire place and baby grand piano. Amidst the tuxedoed servers, we felt like characters straight out of an F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.
The service was highly attentive without being intrusive. The food was truly unforgettable. Get the beef wellington, the buttery texture simply melts in your mouth. Desserts were divine as well. Really liked the sweet and salty combination of the Rocky Road Fondant. Though there was some lag between the appetizers and entrees, they more than made up for it by giving us a free bottle of wine as well as free appetizers, whilst we waited. Looking forward to my next visit there!

I had originally made a Saturday reservation for two for my wife's birthday. However, an emergency came up and we had to reschedule our dinner. The restaurant was very accomodating and was able to give us a reservation two days in advance. Although we arrived an hour early, they were able to seat us right away anyway! The decor is very lovely, and adds a classic appeal to its ambiance. We ordered scallops for our appetizer, and the duck and beef wellingtons for our entrees. The scallops and ducks were FANTASTIC! Although my beef wellington was a bit on the salty side. They remembered to put a birthday candle in my wife's dessert without my reminding them, which was a nice touch. Overall, it was a wonderful experience. I would definitely come back again!

We went here for our engagement dinner, and it was perfect. The place was crowded (which I equate with good food), but it wasn't very loud. We were seated in the room that leads to the balcony, and the christmas lights were lit. That, the candles, and the flowers on the table, set the perfect romantic mood. The restaurant only offers prix fixe (at least when we went), and I don't remember exactly what we got, but it was very, very good. All in all, a perfect night and I would highly recommend this place to anyone.

Romantic---yes. But so is Central Park on a perfect spring day. The difference is, you don't expect an edible meal in Central Park. Terribly disappointing.

I used to dream about going to One if by Land, Two if by Sea and then, when I finally did get to go , I understood that some dreams can come true. A subdued atmosphere doesn't take away from the excellent service, presentation and overall dining experience at what is surely one of New York's top five restaurants.

This restaurant provides a very romantic dimly lit, fireplace setting. The food is superb, the service is excellent and the atmosphere is jus what you need it to be. Local restaurants are not often known for great food, but you will be pleasingly surprised.

Its a great resturant. Dim lights, very romantic. Food was excellent, very fresh. Waiter was very knowledgable and attentive, but not overbearing. The place was hidden, hard to find, almost secluded. Didnt even look like a resturant from the front. Resturant staff = excellent. Overall experience = excellent
I went there for resturant week. I been to other places for resturant week and quite frankly the service sucked. i dont know if it was because we was there for resturanrt week and not the regular menu. But here, I was treated like royalty. Just go. Dont bother reading about other reviews.. with some guy complaining about his drink tasting like kiwi.. lol.

Ok- I like gin... I like Kiwi...Not necessarily a taste explosion when paired together! It actually looks like lizard puke...the smell, not too far off?!? How exactly does their cocktail list go with the romantic-upscale food! I love the food! I would love a great drink to go with it!?!
Never again!
Decent wine selection-but it could be updated and the waiter didn't really know the wine list? I had to go with what I knew. This place always impresses my dates, and it always works...but I just wish they had something better to drink.
I will come back for the food!
Service needs improvement-especailly regarding the "cocktail list"-YUCK

I surprised my fiance by taking him to One if by Land for dinner while were in New York celebrating the anniversary of our engagement last week. The menu was great - we both selected a steak entree - and I ordered a bottle of wine. The ambiance, the food and the service were all great. There was only one disappointment - but a big one. Shortly after our wine was poured - a large party of 12 was seated adjacent to us - in the dining room upstairs. What I had expected to be a quiet, romantic, celebration dinner quickly turned into dinner in a bar - or so it seemed. The large party seated near us - had no respect for the atmosphere in the dining room - nor for us or the other 3 couples seated upstairs. They were obviously having a business dinner and were very rowdy. We thought about requesting to be re-seated downstairs, but did not want to make a fuss. We endured the rowdy party and made it through dinner. I was very saddened though - that my romantic dinner wasn't that at all. I would go back - but I would ask the hostess seating us - if we could avoid this again.

I went there on Tuesday 7/29./08 for Restaurant Week, with my wife and another couple. We haven't been there in years but have heard great things about the new chef, Craig Hopson, who comes from Picholine. What an amazing experience --- to die for ! ! . The food wasn't your standard restaurant week fare --, steak, shrimp, pork, fish -- and it didn't disappoint. Simply excellent, innovative, and top notch. The place is beautiful and subdued with wonderful life piano music. The wait staff was courteous, efficient and knoweldgeable. The hostess and I found out later, the owner, Colleen was charming. She alone is reason to re-visit this gem. I can't wait to come back and savour the menu.

I always sort of avoided this place. I've lived here 10yrs and found that institutions like this rely more on their ambience and history as a romantic draw and don't focus on their food as much as I'd like. But I figured I'd give it a shot anyway, and I was instantly and consistently impressed from start to finish. My girlfriend and I tried the buffalo ribeye and gnocchi apps, then the beef wellington and rosemary crusted rabbit. They take some pieces of classic cuisine and really alter them in a new and genuine way, twisting just enough to make it exciting while holding true to the aspects that have made them so prevalent. Our server, (John?), couldn't have been more professional and his service was well-timed and his manner extremely authentic and concientious. He exhibited exactly what I try to instill in my staff ( I've been in this business for years), and it's a rare treat to find a combination of innovation, old-school quality and truly pleasant front-of-the-house demeanor that appeals to young (like me), and old. He definitely "crafted" a great evening for us, and there wasn't a tinge of disappointment throughout, in any area. Perhaps that doesn't sound like a compliment, but it's just about the most valuable sentiment I can give to any restaurant, definitely a great experience and I'll return often.

A superb experience. A truly elegant, relaxed, delicious affair. With so many poor quality establishments at every turn in this city - it's nice to know that some restaurateurs still care to please the customer on every level - food, service, decor, ambiance - these are rare qualities in today's dining out world, which makes One If By Land such a dining delight!

I went here for my fathers birthday and it wasn't at all what i expected. Everything was great except for the food. The bar was well stocked and they can def make some good drinks. The food overall was rather bland. The best part was my 1st course, (mushroom and parm crumble) it was superb if a little rich. My second course was blah (i cant think of any other way to describe it) dessert was the same. The spring veggies had been overcooked so much that they had shrunk to a quarter their size and become brown, the gravy on top of the beef was partially congealed and cold. The beef had no flavor and the pastry around it was a lump of mush. The others had fish which was tender, but again unflavored. My sister tried the foie gras which had more oil on it than all the oil wells in the country. I have had good foie and this was def not it. The sauteed shrimp was overdone. This establishment has withstood the test of time, but its not as good as it was. The crowd was a mixture, but the majority was made of oldies sipping drinks and reminiscing. Overall, One if by Land was blah...

This place is everything it claims to be and more. I've been here a few times and have never had a less than perfect experience. The food is absolutely delicious, my favorite is the monkfish. The desserts are to die for so be sure to leave room! They have an exquisite wine list, however if you're unsure, the waiters are great in making recommendations. The service is impeccable, I took my mother once for her birthday and without any request at all from me our waiter brought a lovely dessert out with "Happy Birthday" around it in chocolate syrup. There is a romantic, relaxing ambiance with fresh flowers everywhere and a garden outside while the pianist plays in the background. If you know the history of the building it adds some extra intrigue. I could go on and on about One if By Land, but it still would not do it justice- you really should just go.

My wife and I revisited the place where I asked her to marry me 15 years ago. You can sense the ambience as soon as you enter. The lighting, decor, fresh roses and music set the romantic mood that you look for in a restaurant but rarely find. The staff were very accomodative by moving us nearer to the courtyard windows on the first floor. The wine selection has recently been modified. Although they did not have the bottle I selected they quickly offered an upgrade blend at no additional charge. The waitstaff is attentive but not overbearing. Their Beef Wellington is the best I've ever tasted. It is a fantastic restaurant that lives up to it's billing and provided us with some more great memories.

I have wanted to go to this restaurant for a while, and I decided I would make reservations for our first wedding anniversary. We loved the atmosphere! We had an awesome table on the first floor by a window looking into the courtyard, and were not bothered by other tables? conversations. We deiced to do the tasting menu along with the wine pairing. This was a great choice! The wine pours were very generous! What is so funny is that I HATE fois gras, but I ate it as part of our appetizers and I did not even know what it was. I was telling my husband I loved whatever I just ate, and he laughed, and called the waiter over to confirm what I had just eaten. For my main course I did get the Beef Wellington and to be honest this dish has never blown me away. For some reason I associate it with Vegas Buffets, but WOW it was awesome. Every part of it was great!! My husband did get the lamb and that was also good. Our waiter was so great! We were not rushed and were there for hours. They brought our dessert course out with a candle and had written ?Happy 1st Anniversary? in chocolate around the plate. What a great ending to a wonderful night. I really think this was one of the best NYC overall dining experiences I have ever had. Everything was good from the atmosphere to the food and the staff! I was scared this was going to be one of those over hyped Manhattan restaurants that do not have actual substance, but everything about it was wonderful. For sure we will be going back!!

This is a cozy restaurant in the village -- the last time I was there, they had a crackling fire and it was such a romantic place.

The food is amazing, The seafood dishes are superb and the service is terrific as well. It don't know how easy it is to get in there on the weekends. The last Saturday night I was there, it was packed and it was during a snow storm.

I went to this restaurant for the first time at the beginning of restaurant week. The portions were certainly scaled down in size, but they were excellent. The scallops were WAY too scaled down (you only got 2), but my hangar steak was a good portion. The citrus baba was fabulous, and the appetizers were very good. The waiter was excellent - the best service I've had in the city. They let us sit for 30 minutes and finish our bottle of wine between the main course and dessert - there was absolutely no rush and our waiter was very attentive at bringing out food or the check when we requested in. We sat upstairs which was not as quaint as the main rooms below, but it was still a very romantic setting.

I recently tried this restaurant twice after reading Frank Bruni's review in the New York Times.

I agree with him that while the ambience was always very romantic there seemed to be a none too exciting approach to the food.

I went there twice. What a pleasant surprise! The decor, while still formal, is not as heavy as it was before. And I do like their booths located around the restaurant.

I could not believe what I saw on the menu. I just never expected this (previously staid) restaurant to show such interesting food. The gnocci with Burgundian snails is awesome! I loved the venison and the partridge too. Even the desserts, which I always found a little boring are far more exciting. I loved the kumquat dessert.

I am glad that the restaurant took on Craig Hopson from Picholine. Even more I am glad that they really are making something for themselves and not resting on their laurels. While the service was good, it was not exemplary (but that is something very hard to find in New York).

I really look forward to going back again!!!!

Last night I was beyond excited to get the chance to visit this raved about restaurant. To my dismay, the food was sub par. I took advantage of the restaurant week, prix fix menu. The pasta just didn't taste good, and the salmon as a main course was just a little too undercooked for my liking. Overall the food was bland. The chocolate souffle dessert was great, but I also feel like I would have gotten that anywhere. The idea behind the restaurant was great, very enchanting decor. I was extremely disappointed. At least I tried it, but I wouldn't go back.

Very nice ambiance. Food ok. More of an experience. We went for our 2 year anniversary and were very satisfied. The desserts came decorated with candles and "happy anniversary" written on the plates: incredibly nice touch.
I would recommend it to any couples seeking romance and ambiance. Candles, roses, dark lit, live piano playing etc.
The only thing I disliked was that our hispanic waiter was slightly annoyed and not really soft or sophisticated. He was speaking spanish very loudly with a couple sitting behind us. He brought down the athmosphere a little bit but not too much.

I've lived in the city for years and have always heard what a fantastically romantic restaurant this was so I thought I'd finally check it out and take my boyfriend for his birthday.

I didn't expect the food to be stellar, I was really more interested in going someplace where the atmosphere was cozy and romantic.

It was disappointing from the moment we walked in the door which was like walking into a loud bustling train station. Nothing special or romantic about the piano music -- I think I heard the theme from Cheers. We were seated upstairs in a small room that was unnotable for anything.

Both the wine and the champagne we ordered were not chilled properly and the waiters kept trying to fill our glasses to the brim -- probably to make up for the fact that they knew they were busy and would forget to stop by.

We both had the 6 course tasting menu which was SO SO awful we didn't finish a single dish. I didn't want to embarrass him or I would have spoken with a manager because I can't imagine how any restaurant could have achieved even a single star with the horrible food that we were served. The service was not at all attentive... leaving us wondering most of the time if they had forgotten about us or the food which was served barely warm each time (except one of the desserts which was seved as a pool of liquid -- it was ice cream).

With so many wonderful restaurants in this city, you are not missing a thing if you never step foot in this place!!!

My fiance and I arrived to the restaurant for our 'annual Christmas dinner' and were greeted by an unwelcoming hostess who made us feel like we had to 'prove' our reservation. Once seated at our table I found myself looking around for something to support this restaurant's rating as most romantic of 2007. But never saw anything to make me want to come back or recommend this place. The appetizers we had (ham consomme and quail) were interesting but not delicious. The venison I had was delicious but the beef wellington was so so, as the meat looked gray and was smothered in liver. Desserts were okay. Overall atmosphere (waitress/service, food) was snooty. My money would be better spent at a nice, warm romantic steakhouse than here at this pretencious, snooty place which lacks the romantic ambiance associated with it.

We had dinner here the night we were engaged!! - not a single complaint! - we were seated promptly, the service was excellent and the food was AMAZING! - very tasty, and many good choices for the prix fixed option!, the place is very romantic, nicely decorated, and quiet!, which we really appreciated compared to so many of the very noisy restaurants - will definetly return!!

i ate dinner @ oibl tibs lastnight on halloween it was mediocre. Nice ambiance nice wine good service very romantic. I love food i love to eat> i ordered the foie gras for my appetizer it was salty but still tasty. We asked them immdeiately to hold off on our entrees for a few minutes so we could digest ,drink a little wine and enjoy conversation> but when my entree did come ,i got the lamb, it tasted salty and like it had been microwaved or something> i understand we asked them to hold off on our entrees but we gave them ample time before we were even done with our appetizers to do so. someone who i was with got the same thing and she agreed that it tasted like catering hall food. So we asked to have our desserts wrapped up since they came with our meal and they were very nice about telling us what travels well and what does not. Instead we ordered the cheeze platter for dessert > it was great! the best part of the whole meal. maybe i should have ordered cheeze as my entree..haha...bill came we paid it but when i woke up this morning i was not satisfied with the experience they gave us for well over 500 dollars not including tip.

I had dinner there last night with a friend and was surprised to see how many poor reviews were posted here.

We arrived and were seated promptly for our 6:30 reservation.
I had the Gruyere Gnocchi and the Wellington. My friend had the mushroom tart and the Wellington.

I thought the appetizer was wonderful and the Wellington was great; melt-in your mouth. We weren't rushed and in general were both very pleased. The Prixe fixe with $6 supplement for the Wellington, and a glass of wine ran about $120 for each of us including tax, tip, and coatcheck.

The ONLY minor complaint was the bread/rolls weren't warm. At this price point I would have expected that.

I don't know why this place suppose to be a romantic dining.

I went there with my boy friend, he didn't like the food at all. I thought the food was ok, but he kept saying it was too salty and drank water. It was an expensive prixe-fixe dinner, compared to the taste of food.

I liked the live piano music.

Their claim to fame is beef Wellington. Here is my recent experience:
A generous chock of meat floating in a pool of coagulated ?wine? sauce landed with a thud in front of me. I was informed it was my beef Wellington. I was intrigued: last time anyone had beef Wellington in my family, President Roosevelt was in office. That?s Theodore. The beef was rubbery and tasteless. I scraped the whole wretched garnish to one side. Bordelaise sauce appropriated its name fraudulently, it?s more like a gravy.
I couldn't help but think at this price I could be dining at the Little Owl. Or Spotted Pig.

We ordered Beef Wellington from the fix menu and it was amazing!. The waiter was attentive and ambiance was very romantic. The Heirloom tomato salad was fresh and flavorful. We could go and on but it you want a true and romantic place just go there. But make reservations. We were so impressed we purchased a $200 gift certificate for our good friend. We loved it!

This place was excellent. The food the service is Highly Reccommended by me. The staff was organized and professional. The food was excellent. We went during restaurant week and the menu was perfect. The gentleman on the piano music was so soothing. I would definitely go here again.

Of five years of living and dining in NYC, this is by far my most favorite place I have ever been. The service was the best around, and our meal was great. Hint - they run the restuarant week deal for dinner all summer long. When I heard there was live piano music, I thought that might make it a little stuffy for my liking. But it wasn't put-you-to-sleep piano music, he played Coldplay and Bruce Springsteen for example, but he played it softly so that it wasn't overpowering. The music made the atmosphere perfectly romantic, and not over the top. If I don't go back for dinner right away I will certainly go in for a drink at the bar to listen to the piano guy.

My girlfriend and I went here two weeks ago and it made our trip. We stayed at the Ritz, went to a Yankees game (box seats), but I will tell you this was the best part of our trip! The restaurant?s GM Rosanne Martino is a billboard of a quality leader. This restaurant is run better than most military commands. The food was excellent, service was superb and the setting was definitely romantic. Waiter was very knowledgeable of both food and wine and helped us with directions to the Comedy Club. I grew up fine dining and I can tell you this was one of the best. A must go place in NYC. Thanks Rosanne!

Eating at this restaurant is always an experience. The decor is so lush that I feel pampered just being in the building. The food is well prepared and interesting. The service is fantastic and the waiters are all exceptionally well trained. I recommended the beef wellington, the souflee, and the gnocci. They were all delicious. I figured that a place with such a romantic reputation would be a bit corny, but that is not true at all. I found it to be very civilized. And best of all, the $75 prix fixe is a great bargain considering the type of food you are eating.

We've been here 3 times - twice for restaurant week and once for the regular menu. The most recent restaurant week menu was generous and well thought out - they definitely want to make you happy with scallops, shrimp, pork, steak, etc. No corners cut anywhere, lots of choices. We started out at the bar with lovely cocktails and a very nice bartender. The decor is all it's cracked up to be, it's very cozy, romantic, lovely. The bar is small and gets a little crowded but it's still quiet and relaxing. Dinner was upstairs, with nice views of the downstairs dining room. Service is professional yet relaxed, not stuffy at all. Our guy was friendly and helpful. We enjoyed the food tremendously - scallop carpaccio was amazing as was the hangar steak, pork tenderloin. If you've never been here just go and you'll love it. Who can resist the old world charm, the delicious menu, and the great service. Put something nice on before you go - it's definitely a dress up place.

My boyfriend took me here on Wednesday for our one-year anniversary. I had assumed since this restaurant is so nice that the staff would be pretentious, but I cannot explain how nice the bartender and our waiter were. The waiter even stayed with us for a few minutes to give us tips on tasting and finding good bottles of wine. We also explained to the waiter that we had theater tickets, so the restaurant made sure we were finished in time but that we did not feel rushed at all. We ordered the tasting menu and opted to get the wine pairings. All of the dishes were amazing and, even though they were small, we left feeling full and satisfied. My favorite dish was the monkfish and fettucine, which sounded like an odd pairing at first, but was beautifully done. I ordered the chocolate trio dessert, and felt that violating my diet for the night was definitely worth it. Two of the dishes were molten chocolate cake and a white chocolate ice cream dish. I get molten chocolate cake all the time, but this was definitely the best one I've ever had. The atmosphere was also great - I am very interested in history so I was excited to eat in Aaron Burr's old house. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone celebrating a special occassion (unfortunately, since I'm only in my mid-20's, I can't afford to eat here all the time).

I am writing to tell you about an amazing evening my fiancee and I spent at One if By Land. Although we were not celebrating anything special, it was the most special evening. From the time we walked into the restaurant, to the music of an incredible pianist, until the time we were leaving and stopped by the fireplace for an after dinner drink, everything about the night was superb.

We heard this is the most romantic restaurant in New York, and it surely is, along with impeccable service, delicious food and beautiful ambiance.

Went here for my anniversary with my boyfriend. nice place, very quaint, very romantic with the fireplaces and nice flowers, but very old and stuffy, everyone was 50+ (considering I am 25... this was a negative). but it was a nice quiet evening. some of the food on the menu was unavailable which was disappointing and my monkfish lacked flavor. overall, the ambiance is ok, but the price was way too high ($300/2 ppl) for food that was pretty bland.

Walking down the street with friends and saw a guy playing the piano in the window. It was snowing and we weren't dressed up so weren't sure if they'd let us in. The hostess said they didn't have a dress code so we sat by a fireplace and listened to music, had some drinks and food in the bar and had a great time. My friends and I are mid-20's, most of the people were older but not much (30's). The music was great and the ambience was wonderful, so was the food although we didn't have dinner, just appetizers and desserts.

Sounds like this place was the place to be during restaurant week. My wife and I couldn't get in - so we decided to go early on a Sunday (too bad they aren't open for Sunday brunch cause it's a great setting). It was quiet and charming and we had a really nice time. The menu was expensive - I see why there was such a frenzy to get in there for only $35 - but not as expensive as some other restaurants I have been to. And it's well worth it. The food is amazing. The wine list is extensive and fairly priced. I don't claim to be a "foodie" or nearly as bitter as some of the other people who have posted reviews here. This is an old-fashioned, charming, New York institution with great food, a helpful and adept staff and we had a great time. What's all the complaining about? What, are people looking for life-altering experiences? It's just dinner.

Wow. This place was crammed! I had to beg and plead to get a reservation during restaurant week and am sooooooooo glad I did! Sure, we had to wait for a table - but the bar is gorgeous! The warmth of the fireplace and the lilting piano music kept my girfriend and I in the perfect mood. (Not to mention the great Cosmo!!) We were seated in a smaller dining room that I thought was kinda off the beaten path ... but it turned out to be much quieter than the hustle and bustle of the Main room. Our waiter (Curt? Kirk?) was excellent. He advised us on a great bottle of wine that wasn't too expensive. And the food was phenominal. My one complaint is the crowds ... but we knew this would happen during Restaurant Week. We will definitely be back - I want to bring my family here when they visit New York. Went there this week for Restaurant Week. One in our party had their regular menu and the rest of had the restaurant week menu. The staff was very friendly and accomodating. We were seated right away even though it was extremely busy. The restaurant is beautiful and the food was wonderful. I'm surprised about some of the comments I've been reading here. People saying it's a bargain for $35 but wouldn't pay full price at other times. My understanding is the restaurant week menu is different than what you would get for $75. The other menu was offered to us and as I said one in our party chose that because he wanted lobster. We all felt we got excellent value for our money. There's something to be said about a place that has live piano music, beautiful flowers, crystal, china, linens etc. You get what you pay for in my estimation. I would definitely recommend this restaurant and will come back and try their regular menu.

Went to OIBL for Restuarant Week since the place is historic. Had to wait about 25 mins for our table with reservations since it was packed on a Wed. night (mostly middle aged couples and groups). Our table upstairs was nice; the place was glowing w/ candlelight which made for pleasant ambiance. Our server was professional and attentive. The menu offered nice choices for prix fixe (gnocchi was delicious, honey sauce for smoked pork was a great match, and the choc. fondant was warm and good). We opted to add on a cheese course and the cheeses (plenty for 2) were well worth the value (6 cheeses with pairings of olives, honey, fig paste, and grapes=$17). Though we enjoyed our meal, there was nothing special that we would come back for at full price (maybe wine and the cheese course if offered a la carte). However, it was a decidedly good bargain for Rest. week.

Made a reservation for restaurant week. It was really busy, but I only waited 10 minutes for a table. We were treated really well. The food was way better than I expected. Great deals on the wine list and the service was excellent. It was a bit noisy but what can you expect when everyone is there for a "deal" during restaurant week. I would definitely recommend it. You won't be disappointed.

It amazes us that this restaurant is able to maintain a reputation as "one of the most romantic restaurants in New York". Interior is dated and lighting is off. Restaurant is noisy and not conducive to a romantic evening out. Despite reservations, we waited a half hour wait and then waited an additional 20 minutes before we were even provided a menu. Service was haphazard - rushed at times and incredibly slow at other points during the meal. While waiters and staff were polite, it felt like service and attention was an afterthought at this restaurant. Food was average at best and not worth the wait or cost. There are far better places in New York to spend your time and money.

So i went there for Restaurant Week, and I enjoyed my time there. The place was very beautiful, from the piano in the front to the gorgeous mirrors, decorations, everything was romantic and perfect. The only downside were that we were in the back room, so the paino music was difficult to hear, and I didn't feel the atmosphere was as fairy-tale like. We didn't have drinks, and I have to say, I feel the waiter took that as a sign we weren't worth as much time as other diners.

I had the Soup de Jour, which was lobster bisque, good as lobster bisques go. I had the fish, and it was delicious; it totally melted in my mouth. My date had the pork, and I have to say, we've had better, in fact, we've made better. The pork was tough, not well seasoned, and it felt like the table was going to break before we coule cut the pork. Desert was delicious, I had the creme brulee, which was very good, and my date had the chocolate fondant, which was squally delicious.

I was glad to see some of the same items on the regular menu on the Restaurant Week menu. All in all, a good experience, and I'd definitely go back.

We went there with the highest of expecations for a special night with friends.

Upon arrival the hostess treated us like yesterday's garbage. They had listed us for an earlier reservation and snidely told us that we had lost our table, although the reservation had been confirmed earlier that day.

She reluctantly told us that she would seat us at the bar. We go out to Zagat rated restaurants on a regular basis, but apparently the hostest was not impressed with our last name, or perhaps our age bracket, (what's wrong w/being thirty something?) Regardless, McDonalds has better quality service than this tired establishment that is coasting on it's reputation for service, and no longer provides it. I know that many have built memories here, lots of engagements, etc. But if you want to build yours, I'd strongly suggest that you keep looking.

I am shocked at some of the reviews here. OK, first of all, I am 26 years old and a 9-year NYC resident who likes fine dining. So not only am I young, I am also quite aware of what a good restaurant should be and can be in this city... and this is hands down my favorite restaurant in Manhattan. I have eaten here scores of times now and have always had the special, warm, romantic experience (with fantastic food, by the way) that I come for. Yes, if you want trendy this isn't it. But if you want to eat amazing food in a cozy place with old-school charm, rush to 1IBL.

Where to begin! Went here for a romantic dinner and was seated in the back, near the air conditioner, where it felt very cold and damp. The service was attentive, the atmosphere is nice, but the food is truly terrible. My fish was bland, the pasta was cold and tasteless. The only good thing about the meal was the creme brulee, it was pretty good. All in all it's very overpriced for what it is, and not to be an ageist it really IS not for the younger crowd. Save your money and go somewhere else.

The most romantic restaurant in New York City - nestled on a cobblestone street in a colonial building that Aaron Burr used as a carriage house. You can almost imagine 18th century figures moving about the area. We went there for a special 1 year anniversary and it was beyond! Fine dining - classy without being stuffy. The decor is amazing as you enjoy a pre-dinner cocktail at the piano bar. The hosts are professional and friendly ... You feel warm and comfortable inside these walls. The food is perfection - try the Beef Wellington! They were very accomodating and we will definately return!

I've heard about One if by Land, Two if by Sea forever. My parents and grandparents have always raved about it. I've always considered myself more of a "Jean George" aficionado so I was skeptical when my boyfriend suggested going there for dinner. I have to say it was so nice to walk into such a historic New York City landmark. In this day and age when decor is either cold, minimalist or over the top mod, it was a comforting feeling to walk into a room with so much character, color and warmth. The staff could not have been friendlier or more educated on the menu. The tuna tartar with seared fois gros served over a grilled pineapple blew me away. I had an delicious halibut dish and my boyfriend had the beef wellington. The desserts were wonderful. Being an interior decorator the only thing I could suggest is new carpeting.

I took my sister here to celebrate her birthday and I felt a little out of place as the restaurant ambience was very romantic. I think the seating on the 1st or 2nd floor is equally nice and there was a live piano player. We ordered food from the restaurant week menu and the risotto was amazing. The bread was not too good but the pork was also delicious. My fish was excellent and the desserts were okay. The crumble was disappointing.

Went for my birthday and it was the perfect place to celebrate! The waitstaff was very attentive, the atmosphere and piano music very romantic, and we weren't rushed. We chose from the limited Restaurant Week Menu, and nothing was new or innovative. However, each course was served promptly, displayed beautifully, and prepared wonderfully. Cocktails were $15 each, but my chocolate martini was served in an oversized martini glass. We were even given two $20 off discount cards to use for next time. Well worth the price!!

I brought my girlfriend here for her birthday and was immediately put off by the hostess's attitude. She was very impatient when seating us, and promptly led us to the very back and offered us a table in the far corner in an otherwise empty restaurant. After being seated at a different table, the waiter gave us a very in-depth description of the specials as well as everything on the menu. The food was delicious as was the wine, but the atmosphere was a bit too pretentious for my comfort, and the food really doesn't stand out as one of a kind in my mind.

This place is a colossal waste of money. Went there last night for our 1 year anniversary. I agree with the previous reviewer that compared the place to a Old Folks Home. This is definitely a holdover from a previous generation. The oak, dark carpeting, and brass are all fine. But that kind of old school taste is in the food too. That's where I draw the line. The lamb tasted like something I could've fried up at home. My wife's beef wellington might as well have been pulled out of the freezer at Gristede's. If you under 50, and appreciate good food, STAY AWAY!!! If you over that age, perhaps the Sinatra, old school ambiance might be the thing that draws you. But that's the only thing I can think of that is of any substance.

I brought my father to OIBL TIBS when he came to visit from out of town. The ambience is a mix of Tavern on the Green and a retirement home dining room. The wait staff were polite and professional. Our first course and dessert were good, but our entrees were all below average. The restaurant was so loud that one couldn't even hear the piano and had to speak quite loudly to have a conversation. Definitely too loud to be "romantic."

Just went to this past Friday for my Birthday. The service was fine...courteous and polite. Food, was good as well, if a bit oily.

Their "Jackets Required" policy must be on a relaxed summer schedule as we saw a few jeans in the restaurant and very few jackets.

So romanitc? Not really, but it is a great place to take your parents when they come in from out of town...

I finally got to go to One If By Land after years of living in NY. And I was not at all disappointed. The place is cozy and classy and refined. The food is elegantly prepared and the service is impeccable. I actually avoided the Beef Wellington and tried the monkfish instead, which was moist and flaky and delicious. My dinner companion had the roasted lobster, which I highly recommend. We both had the Lichido Coladas, which we're both already craving. And, of course, the chocolate souffle for dessert, which was delish. But then again, I have yet to meet a chocolate souffle I didn't like.

I came here with my boyfriend for a special occasion and boy, is it ROMANTIC! It's a little snooty and everyone is around 40-ish of age, so we were the youngest couple in the whole restaurant. We didn't order any drinks but we felt pressured to because EVERYONE had champagne and wine, etc. We ordered the Parmesan Gnocchi, but I didn't really like it. He had the Foie Gras which was very good and very smooth! Entree: BEEF WELLINGTON was sooo delicious. I recommend getting it rare because I didn't think my medium-rare was rare enough, he had the duck but I thought my beef tasted much better. For dessert, I had the chocolat fondant which was good because it was light and not-too-sweet and melted in my mouth. He had the Creve Blueberry Cheesecake, but again I liked mine better. It is a little pricey, but worth it for special occasions. I would def. recommend going there at least once!

I went here for my birthday with my boyfriend, and everything you've heard is true - the food is excellent (most people told me that only the beef wellington was, but I think it was ALL very good), it's very romantic, and the waitstaff is very professional. The only drawback is the price. Don't be fooled by the $69 per person - you add drinks/wine and you order one or two of the extra-cost courses, and it quickly becomes a $350 dinner for two. But if your pockets are deep - go there now!!

From the moment we walked in the door, my co-workers and I were totally enchanted by the ambience and hospitality we were met with. We had drinks by the bar before dinner (there's a great piano player). The bar is large, lively with two great fireplaces and friendly bartenders. Dinner was wonderful. Three courses with lots of great choices. Our server was most helpful in our wine selections. I would highly recommend this restaurant. Although a lot of people were there for romantic reasons, just as many business people were dining and it was a totally comfortable atmosphere.

Soup brought before wine, each plate slapped down in front of us the second the prior was lifted. Made for an overall frustrating dining experience. Although rated most romantic, I wasn't impressed. My table faced a mirror, kind of a cheesy accessory to a supposedly classy decor. Appetizer and dessert was good, I don't recommend the gnocchi. Overall overpriced for the quality of the food, the decor and especially the poor service. Go to one of the other great NYC restaurants!

My wife and I celbrated our anniversary at OIBL on a weeknight in Oct. When we arrived, we were seated immediately and soon after greeted by our waiter. He was courteous and professional and really knew the menu. I like to ask the waiter/waitress their opinion and our waiter was very helpful. The appetizer and entree were very good (not amazing) , the desert was fantastic. Our dinner (fixed price) plus a cocktail each was $180. A good price for a high end rest. in Manhattan.

After hearing wonderful things, I decided to have my birthday dinner here.
First, the place was SWELTERING - my boyfriend was SWEATING.
We get our menus and order drinks. The waitress comes back and takes our order. 3 minutes and we get appetizers. We then get drinks when we are almost done.
After apps, 5 minutes and there's our entrees! My salmon was RAW. My boyfriend's pork was the saltiest thing. We barely touched our food - the waitress came over to ask what was wrong, and we said we felt extremely rushed.
They take our food and plop dessert menus down. We sat at 7:00 and this was 7:25.
We don't open the menus until 8PM. I ordered the souffle. Well, when it came out (3 minutes), it had FALLEN.
Are you kidding me?
NEVER AGAIN. The service was terrible, we were rushed, and the food was subpar.

Perfect place to dine when celebrating special occasions. It's not cheap, but you definitely get what you pay for. Great ambience, not too dark, not too bright, good music and good service. My husband and I went there last night to celebrate our 2nd anniversary. We had 7 oclock reservation and we were seated promptly. We ordered from the Restaurant Week menu. We both had the crab-scallop cake for the appetizer which was incredible, then for our entree, I had chicken and he had the salmon. Then dessert. We sat there for a long time wondering where our dessert was. He had ordered the Chocolate fondant cake and I ordered the Creme Brulee. They finally brought it out with candles on our plates and in chocolate was written Happy Anniversary on each of our plates. Too bad we didn't bring our camera. All in all, the experience was phenomenal. The food was delicious and the service was impecible. I'd go there again. Definitely what all the hype was about.

After reading the few complaints it seemed that the writers of those complaints must have been in a different establishment than the one I know. The food, ambiance and service are all top notch. The prices were comparable to other NYC restaurants and the portions were more than adequate. I guess the disgruntled writers either wanted fast food prices for lobster or just were upset because their dates didnt end up back at their aparttments like they hoped they would.

This was one of the worst dinners that my fiance and I have had in Manhattan in years. The food was flavorless and tasted and looked more like a TV dinner than top rated cuisine. We were seated upstairs and could barely hear each other due to the noise level. Bread was disappointing and wine is very over priced. Don't waste your time or money.

Upon arrival, you immediately notice the piano by the bar. There were sofas next to several fireplaces and an elegant dining room with a balconey dining area as well. Our host seated us promptly and gave us a table where we can hear the piano but not distracted by it. The food was great, especially the crab-scallop cake and the smoke duck w/ foie gras. Also, desserts like the chocolate fondant were delicious too. All the negativity I seen lately is probably due to their restaurant week offerings, which by no means had small portions compared to some other high-end dining spots. I strongly recommand the 7 course tasting menu which includes tuna tatar w/ foie gras, lobster appetizer, beef wellington, and lamb chops for only $79.

Don't come for food, and don't come for fine-dining service, because OIBL offers neither. We men pay outrageous sums for a romantic place, and that's what this joint goes over-the-top to deliver. The restaurant ran out of chicken from the restaurant week menu and refused to substitute another dish. My foursome all had to settle for the salmon--how boring when the tab comes to $85/person! The waiter had limited fine-dining experience; he needlessly embarassed me when I asked a wine question. (Note to the guys: it doesn't impress our lady when the waiter says bluntly that our wine selection is inappropriate.) I won't be back.

My husband and I went out with a group of friends last night to One if by Land, Two if by Sea eagerly anticipating an amazing experience via Restaurant Week. While our dinner reservation was for 9 p.m., we were not seated until after 9:30 p.m. Drinks were steep ($10 for well drink, $12 for wine), the beautiful ambience was ruined by the loud chatter and lack of air conditioning, and too close for comfort seating. The portion sizes are tiny so don't go there hungry. My husband and I thought the food was very average considering its reputation and acclaimed high caliber. There are certainly other restaurants to consider for great food and environment, with better prices.

Finally got the chance to go to OIBL and was disappointed. Table for 3 was right in the corner near the hostess in an small alcove. Decor was fancy but not enough to carry the place. Portions were TINY. Don't go on an empty stomache. When the crab cake appetizer came out it was so tiny I assumed it was a tart that many restaurants provide w/ the meal. The pork was good but 3 small medalians and 2 tablespoons of mashed potatos does not make a meal. Figuring I had calories to spare for dessert I had the chocolate fondrant but it was too bitter. Stay away from the berries soup. Tasted like an ice pop in the microwave with a few berries for garnish. When the check came we were rushed to leave. Was still hungry! Glad I went so I know not to go again.

I was disappointed by the food at One if By Land. I know this place is known for being romantic, but I would naturally assume that flavorful food would be encompassed in it's "romantic" allure. Not so much. For an $80 prix fixe menu, I received only $40 worth of food. The food wasn't anything stellar -- nothing that couldn't be found at a less hyped restaurant. The servers were very helpful and attentive, though. I wouldn't exert the effort to dine here -- similar restaurants can be found at half the hype and without the hassle.

This restaurant has been touted as one of the most romantic restaurants and one of the best but it is far from it. Yes it has a piano (but stuck near the door and bar so it was barely audible for most tables). Yes they have candles on the tables but the decor is very old fashion. If you want a place that your grandmother would love then this is the place. I did not like the place because:
-it took the waiter over 20 min to take our order and then over an hour until we got our food.
-the bread served was cold
-the choices for restaurant week was very slim (no meat dish except pork)
-there were no chef's treats or delights
-the food was ok but not up to the quality expected
There are more exciting, romantic restaurants in the city to visit.

Went with my husband for our anniversary and I am so disappointed we wasted a special evening there. The food was terrible--one of the all time worst meals I've ever had in Manhattan. My husband ordered the smoked pork which was basically 3 slices of Virginia Ham. My sea bass was boring & bland. My soup tasted like it was out of a can. The creme brulee was one of the most flavorless I've ever had. Although the restaurant has some old world charm and is pretty--it is tired and worn.

Went to OIBL/TIBS for my wife's 30th birthday primarily based on the reputation for being romantic and terrific food. First the ambiance - definitely the place to go if you want that old world charm. If you are looking to impress someone with something fancy shmantzy, this is the place. In terms of food - we both felt that with some minor exceptions, the food was not quite at the level expected for a restaurant of this caliber and cost. It was just simply too salty for our taste. However, the shining spot in the experience was the exemplary service. Bottom line - go for the experience, not for food.

Everything that can be said about this restaurant has been said. It is beautiful and romantic, and the service and food was incredible. We had an 8pm reservation, were seated promptly, and were not rushed out-we stayed for almost 2 hours. Everything about this place is just amazing.

My husband and I went to One if By Land to celebrate his birthday. We had been looking forward to visiting this restaurant for years after hearing how it is the most romantic restaurant in New York. While the food was decent and the ambiance nice the service was horrendous. Our waiter was pretty much non-existent and when he did come to our table he practically tossed our plates and wine glasses in front of us. When he saw that we were unsatisfied he asked what's the problem is the service too slow or too fast. Shortly after that we got up and walked out, something we have never done in a restaurant before. I would assume that other waiters in the restaurant have better attitudes, but our waiter completely ruined the experience.

the food was GREAT and they have a great selection of wines. But the service was just so so which was a great disappointment because the food and ambience deserve better. service wasn't AWFUL - just not really on their toes. basically, my reservation was at 9:15, they seated us at 9:50, then there was just all this 'non-activity' going on so we didn't order for another 20 minutes - and I was hungry! this 'non-activity' lasted through the night. But overall - worth going to for a good, romantic date - but maybe not worth going to again..

We came here expecting the typical choice of Salmon or Chicken for dinner during Restaurant Week, hoping it would not be a bland version for this basic prix fixe meal. We were pleasantly surprised by also having the choice of pork loin which was "melt in your mouth" delicious. The Gnocchi appetizer was excellent, too. Quantity is small, but quality is great! The Creme Brulee was average, I did not even finish it. Drinks are pricey ($10 for a Stoli O on the rocks, $12 glass of Merlot). The restaurant was beautiful, the staff was very nice, and we got a great seat near one of the fireplaces. Tables were spaced nicely too, and we were not sitting too close to other diners. I would recommend taking out of town family to this restaurant for a nice dinner out.

Last night I was invited by friends to this restaurant. The food was good but overpriced and the decor was a little stodgy. Our waiter was very prompt and friendly, but the worst part of the experience was actually after the meal when I was leaving. I needed change to give the woman at coat check a tip. I stood at the bar waiting patiently for change. The female bartender completely ignored me helping other customers standing next to me and those who came up after me. Finally, after waiting so long my friend lent me money to give the coat check woman.

Being a newyorker, I've been hearing about this hyper-romantic institution since forever. I'll bet this place was something in it's hey day, and it's still a nice place, with rich wood & carpeted ambiance. Charmingly good, but un-inspired dishes combined w/good service and luxuriously decorated albeit aging infrastructure places it about a notch lower than the $$$$ it charges. This would be a top-notch experience anywhere else but NYC.

I took my fiancee to celebrate our one year anniversary last Saturday. It's started badly with the bar running out of martini glasses - $15 for a cocktail and they served a martini in a white wine glass. Then we were seated in a dark corner upstairs and it took 15 minutes for us to get the waiter's attention. Neither of us liked the starter, although the main course was good. I ordered the soufle for dessert and thought it tasted too eggy (compared with a incredible souffle I had at March). Total check: $313 including tip - for this amount of money, I thought the overall experience was extremely disappointing. Try Danube or March instead for romantic occasions.

GF and I went (non-occasion) after hearing good reviews, but had to wait 30 minutes past reservation with not even an apology. Decor is rather gothic, granniesque.

Ordered tasting menu with wine pairing, for which the waiter/somelier paired the wrong first wine. For the entree pairing, there's an "optional upgrade" wine for $40 extra, which we declined. The dishes themselves were nothing spectacular (Aquavit, Bayards, Grammercy are much better).

I asked the waiter why we were CHARGED EXTRA for the declined upgrade on the bill, he adamantly claimed that he had specifically asked me and I had accepted! When I demanded to talk to the manager, he returns without the manager, saying, "We'll do you a favor and charge you only half price for the wine upgrade." I was so pissed that I just payed the whole price and walked out.

$26 bar + $286 mediocre meal for horrid service.

I have no idea where the people complaining about the waitstaff were eating, but it couldn't have been the same restaurant I ate at last night.
Everything was absolutely perfect. Even after we ordered off the restaurant week menu, the staff treated us with kindness, let us eat leisurely well past closing time, and even made suggestions as to what drinks would best complement our desserts. I love One if by Land and will be going there again!

This is a nice romantic restaurant. I know what other revier means when she says its not really for young lovers because its not a trendy scene. Its more of a traditional romance type place. The food is good--especially the pork chops (I should have ordered that!). The service is pleasent, but they did forget to bring my mother in law's appetizer. The price is great. You just can't beat the pre fixe price for a meal like that in such a nice place, but it would have been nice if they didn't forget one of our appetizers.

I went here to celebrate an anniversary. While the food was good enough (if old-fashioned - my meal tasted like it was out of a fancy 1950s cookbook, all creamy and rich) the environment was sort of bizarre - rich tapestries, yucky corner-grocer roses on the tables, and a strange '80s mirrored wall, which we sat against at the back of the restaurant. The waiter was nice enough but seemed sort of bored and insincere. This would all be bearable if the meal didn't cost $250. A lot of older people there seemed to be in the zone, enjoying their pork chops. Maybe this is not quite the place for young lovers...

Had great expectations and we were both very disappointed. Classic "decent restaurant but not on Saturdays" syndrome perhaps.

The decor is nice enough and the atmosphere is old-school romantic but all a but tatty. We were sat upstairs up with all the other "special occassion" diners. The service was slow to respond, patronizing - a $90 prix fixe menu and we were offered a mushroom tart as a substitute to a meat course??

It was fine but for $130 pp+ it should have been great. We left feeling distinctly untouched and unispired. It lacked that special something and instead left us feeling like one of the hundreds of other couples celebrating an anniversary that night. Never again.

This restaurant is romantic as described, but it is a little too dark and too crowded. We were practically shoulder to shoulder with the couple next to us. We were seated upstairs, would recomend being seated in the main dining room. We went there for our 5th anniversary trip to NYC from CA. The service is impeccable, and they did provide us with plenty of extras, knowing that it was our anniversary. The tasting menu was good, but nothing surprising like Commanders Palace in Las Vegas or New Orleans' tasting menu. Auquavit's food is much better and more surprising and would recomend them over OIBL, TIBS. Dessert was excellent.

This restaurant is supposed to be romantic? The tables were practically on top of one another - I could listen to other peoples' conversations and I'm sure they could hear mine. Not exactly what I'd call intimate.
The food was fine, but was a little overpriced for what was served. I'd recommend sticking with a NYC staple and go to Aureole instead.

My fiancée and me were celebrating our anniversary. It was a very special occasion for us, however the evening was almost ruined after we had dinner there. We foolishly believed the descriptions and ratings that it is one of the most romantic restaurants in NYC. We made reservation 3 days in advance and particularly asked to be seated by a window or a fireplace. However, when we arrived we were seated in the darkest coldest corner upstairs, right next to the kitchen. The waiter, who was serving our table, was very stuck-up and unfriendly. Nobody would come and suggest pouring water in our glasses. We waited for our dessert for 45 minutes! The place was crowded and loud. I had to lean to hear what my fiancée was saying. We went there, expecting to have one of the most romantic dinners, and came out very upset and disappointed.

This place really does a great job to make you feel special. the candle is lit when u sit down, the roses are fresh on the table. The waiter and the people at the front cater to your every need. The food is amazing. Everything was perfect. I love when you go somewhere and you take a sip of water and they refill ur glass. Very attentitive service. I will definately be revisting this place very soon. Dinner for 2 people with one drink(boyfriend doesn't drink) was 210 with tip...not including the 35 bucks for parking garage. I have made reservations two weeks prior to my one year anniversary, requesting a table by the window in the main dining room. When me and my sweetheart have arrived we where promptly seated at the requested table. The ambiance was unbelievable; so romantic so authentic and charming, everything was just ideal. The place had a stunning effect on me and my darling. The service was fine. The food was exquisite and scrumptious. That night I have tasted the finest apple martinis, and I know martini. The price is great value for special occasions. I and my sweetie loved it and I was very pleased with my choice.

My boyfriend and I went on Sunday night for our anniversary and I found it to be the perfect place to go for a beautiful night out. We are twenty somethings so I expected to be treated with less respect, as usually happens in nice restaurants, but the hostess seated us in a prime table right by a window, the waiter was friendly and knowledgeable, and even the bus boys were funny. We had a fabulous time - the food was excellent, though not the best I've ever had...wine list was large and not as pricey as expected. We sat down at 9 and did not leave until after midnight and were not rushed at ALL. It was worth the money in the end, because of the good mix of food and ambiance. I would go there again, and reccommend it to anyone who wants a very special night out.

After reading some negative reviews, I was skeptical about going to this place. But my mood has changed the minute the four of us stepped into this romantic historic-looking restaurant with candles, flowers, and multiple fireplaces. We were greeted at the entrance and seated right away in on the main floor. The waiter was great and very helpful with multiple reccomendations. The pre-fix menu price was $63 which I think is reasonable considering the portions were large and delicious. The wine list starts from $60 & up. The bill came to $450 with tip for four people. This was a wonderful experience and the place is absolutely romantic. The piano man is awesome and plays everyone's favorite tunes. I would go there again in a heartbeat and would reccomend it to everyone who wants to have a great & wonderful evening.

After making reservations 1 month ahead, they sent us to the bar when we arrived, you know to get you out some extra bucks because they had available tables at the moment.

The food was good, but certainly over-hyped as a romantic place. Very dark, loud and crowded.

I dont mind spending heavily in restaurants, but this was not cheap yet did not impressed us. We are not to hard to please, but would not go again.

There are far better choices in the city.

We had an amazing special occasion dinner there on 10/07/03. I had read a number of very negative reviews on line, which I can only conclude were from people who are not accustomed to eating in restaurants of this caliber. The food was more creative than we expected. There was a special green pea soup with truffles and lobsters which was ethereal. Our main courses were perfect. Although we were first time visitors, we were given our pick of wonderful tables. The ambiance is unparalleled, and the service was polite and friendly. The wine list has serious bottles but also good values. With a splurge bottle of wine, our bill was $268, very reasonable in comparison to other fine restaurants in NY.

Dinner was ok. Not the best meal I've ever had but the food was good, better than average. the piano music was lovely. My biggest complaints are about the staff. We had a waiter that had breath so bad it could kill a cat. The other problem we had was with the Host/Maitre'D. When we checked in he couldn't find our reservation and then mumbled something under his breath about the bar. We asked him to repeat himself and he got very nasty. We waited at the bar for 15 minutes to be seated when the restaurant was only half full. This ruined our evening.

Placed at a nice table, the decor was very nice, although there was loud conversations. the prix fixe menus were given pretty prompty and a mini-app was brought out along with some bread. service was professional, although scarce. the appetizer (sea scallops and shrimp thai salad) were both very good, although the entrees were too salty. midway through the dinner, another couple was seated right next to us, although it didn't bother us. deserts were slow to order as waiters passed us twice, even with the menus closed. deserts were also slow to come. Overall, it was an enjoyable dinner, even with the many glasses of water drank.

My dining experience there definitely started off on the wrong foot. My husband & I had made reservations and we arrived on time. A hostess asked us to wait for an available table, which I had no problem with. However, 2 parties of 2 arrived about 10 minutes after we did and they were both seated immediately. When I confronted the hostess and asked her why we were not seated first, she tried to deny that she had seated anyone before us. When I persisted, she eventually mumbled an apology and we were then immediately seated in an area where there were several available tables.
Otherwise, I thought the service was very good...the waiters and busboys were very attentive and gracious. The food was okay, but not worth the money. It's a romantic setting for a private dinner but unfortunately the mood can be spoiled by questionable service.

My wife and I were at least expecting a romantic dining experience, but even this one saving grace was lost between an unfriendly greeter, a haughty waiter, and an overly anxious busboy who kept circling every five minutes asking if we were done yet. On the other hand, the piano music was nice, and this helped me choke down an undercooked and overpriced piece of salmon.

The icing on the cake and why we will never recommend this place to anyone was the blatantly obvious service gap between first class regular customers and everyone else. Unless you're a regular, do yourself a favor and try any number of other vasatly better restaurants on the NYC dining scene. La Grenouille if you want to spend a little more, Raoul's or Cafe des Artistes are comparable price and much more romantic sans attitude.

It's too bad so many of the reviewers on this site expect to go to one of the top NY restaurants, pay $30 during restaurant week and get the meal of their life. It's also not McDonald's - the point IS to spend 2 or 3 hours over a leisurely meal!!

Every day of the week, this restaurant has a $59 prix fix dinner - which I had last night for my boyfriend's birthday. The food was excellent (the pork loin and mushroom tart were of particular note) and the service was fabulous. The waiter recommended delicious, reasonable wines and we asked him for advice on the menu. I can't wait to go back!!

Treat the waitstaff as your host, not your adversary and you just might see what a great experience you can have!!

We went during restaurant week which is key - i would not pay full price for this place. we had a good pre-fixe meal, but the service was sooo slow. we had a 6:30pm reservation and was finished by 9pm. it was as if they forgot their customers as most of our section was looking around for the wait staff.

the atmosphere is romantic, but nothing to go out of your way for.

I found One by Land Two By Sea to be very impolite to Food Week customers. Both the barman and the hostess were snappy and offensive. I was told that I had to pay at the bar before I could be seated. The food was insipid at best and we had to wait 45 minutes between the starter and the main course. Embarrassingly enough, I was trying to impress my guest by taking them to this so called, romantic restaurant. I will never go there again nor recommend it to anyone.

I am really sorry we waisted our time during resaurant week to visit this restaurant again. Since the last time we were there the place has gone down, downhill. The rooms are old, the food was nothing special, the staff was nice, but lacked skill. Thank heavens we didn't spend much money on the awful pork meal (tasted more like a Thanksgiving ham) and the boring chiken. Do not waste your time and money. Go to Montrachet, Chanterelle, Park Avenue Cafe, Union Square Cafe, etc.

This is truly one of the most amazing restaurants in New York City. As a veteran restaurant goer in NYC, I can honestly say that I had one of the most memorable meals in my life at One IF by Land. I went here with my boyfriend for his birthday. This was the most romantic restaurant I've ever been to. The food was good, but not for the price we paid for it. However, the service was the best I've ever had at a restaurant (although that's the way it should have been since we paid a lot for the food).

Also, we were the youngest people at the restaurant. The average age of the restaurant patrons was approximately 35/40 years old. However, the servers did not treat us badly(which I find happens often to younger people in classy restaurants).

I definitely recommend this place to anyone looking for a romantic night out!

Visited mid-week. Busy but not overly crowded. Had a table for 2 on the main floor with view of the entire room. Beautiful setting with well prepared and attractively plated conservative "continental" fare. Tuna tartare is a standout. Overall effect is unfortunatley flawed (at least in our case) by earnest but unpolished service. The wine list is on the expensive side. I had them fax me the wine list and found a solid 1999 Graves for $45 (checked it against Robert Parker vintage chart) Suggest you do the same.

This is one of the most romantic restaurants in the world. The atmosphere is positively wonderful - especially when the gifted pianist is playing (very nice touch on the keys). The warm glow of the fireplace makes it a really nice winter restaurant. The service was very friendly, but unfortunately inefficient. Some of the white wines we sampled were not properly chilled. It was also terribly smokey by the bar when we first walked in. Fortunately the smoke didn't carry into the restaurant area. But they've got to do something about the bad, live piano act. Abba, for goodness sakes! Inappropriate for such a romantic setting. The service was spotty with repeated requests to refill out water glasses necessary. The appetizers fine, but nothing outstanding. The entrees were better than the first course, but still nothing to write about. Desserts were blah and definitely not up to par for such a place. Wine list was extensive, but we got mixed drinks instead. The one thing we did enjoy quite a bit was their dirty vodka martini. Pricey, but mixed very well. We'll probably not be back; too touristy a destination.

Had a lovely evening there lat night with my boyfriend and another couple. Even though we are 20 somethings who were there for restaurant week the staff was very courteous and didn't treat us differently than any other patrons. The restaurant is very romantic in an overdone sort of way. We sat upstairs in a quiet red room which was lovely. The food was excellent and they accomodated our vegetarian requests with a delicious leek and truffle ravioli that melted in the mouth. Portions are a bit smaller compared to most restaurants but the food is very rich. My only 2 criticisms were the very expensive wine list and the ordinary dessert. The chocolate chip cake tasted like a store bought muffin. Over all it was great though.

Our waiter must have been a 'stand-in' because he did not know the menu, choices or basic service protocol (bread plate on the left). Also, tables were ridiculously close together. Lots of large groups. This is not what we expected from "NYs most romantic restaurant!

So far, OIBL,TIBS is the best cuilinary experience that either I or my finacee have experienced. We opted for the tasting menu, a nice option that many more restaurants should provide, with the wine option. The salmon was quite nice, but once they brought the lobster second course, we achieved nirvana. The beef wellington was beyond description; the desserts I won't even profane with mere language. The room was very romantic (though I would have preferred to be downstairs) and the staff was dedicated to the overall experience. Nice. We'll be back and will recommend this one to our most special friends.

This is the first time I went to this restaurant, we were seated upstairs where I think is not as romantic as downstairs. So next time you may wanna request for a table downstairs. The place is nicely decorated and romantic. Service is not exceptionally good but decent. We had a 5 course tasting menu and all of them were great. I wouldn't say that the place is really the "most" romantic restaurant in nyc, but it is definitely worth a visit if you've never been there. The price is reasonable with all the great things. My girlfriend loved the place. The only cons is that the tables are located too closely, like the other person said, you could seat closer to someone you don't know than your lover.

We thoroughly enjoyed our experience at One if By Land, Two if By Sea. Everyone was extremely pleasant, accomodating, and helpful. It was a very romantic and cozy atmosphere - each table has roses, and a tall tapered candle which sets the mood, and many of the tables for two have seats next to each other rather than across. The service was prompt and knowledgable, but not overpowering. All of the food was fabulous, especially the desserts. Overall, it was a teriffic experience - we were made to feel very special, which makes it a great choice for special occasions. It was a rather expensive dinner, but it was worth every penny. I would recommend it to anyone!

The problem with this restaurant is that there are only about 6 "romantic" tables. Every other 2 person table is right next to another table. I was closer to the guy next to me than to my wife across the table. If you are from out of town insist on a window seat. To be able to visit this resturant for my 40th was indeed a treat. It was exceptionally busy, (the friday before christmas) but the food and service was excellent. We were in a side room, as the main dining area, appeared to be Black tie only. The venison truly melted in the mouth, the only service error was made with the supply of the wines, but was promptly corrected by the head waiter who supplied a complimentary wine with our main course. Excellent value - Well worth a return trip !!!

I brought my boyfriend there for dinner for his birthday. We got a beautiful table in a quiet room with fireplaces. Our dinner was delicious. We had tasting menus (I think there were about 8 courses) and they paired wine with every course. At the end of the meal they brought the dessert out & my boyfriend's plate was decorated for his birthday. My Wife & I had the most pleasureable eating experience while dining at One If by Land Two If by Sea. From the very moment you enter through the Oak Door a new experience awaits you as you hear the lovely music of the piano playing soft melodies and are greeted by the Maitre d' . As he asked us our preference as to which table would we perfer we choose one near the window facing the fireplace. Our waiter Michael was very attentive to our needs throughout the evening and his recommendations of the fine selections of dishes on the menu made it an enjoyable culinary delight.
The dessert menu made the evening complete as we both had the Creme brulee. We will surely be back to this fine establishment in the future and would recommend it highly to our friends and anyone that enjoys one of life's pleasures.

This might be the worst restaurant experience I had in the three years I lived in New York. We were seated upstairs, which has significatly less ambience than downstairs, under a wildly blowing air conditioner, with a massive oversized fake floral arrangement poking us in the heads. The waiter was nervous and barely competent. The food was obscenely overpriced even for NYC (though some of it was tasty). The outer bourough couple next to us left their table between each cours for smoke breaks and the heavily made up woman bitched at the waiter for 10 minutes for forgetting to put a candle in her husband's desert. The piano player was pure cheese (he played "Misty"). It was July and the fake fire place was blazing. The whole experience was horrifyingly awful.

Sure the place is somewhat romantic, but larger than one would expect and if you're not an aged "playa", they'll seat you in the attic. The service adequately mimics upscale, but the "executive chef" fare is just that, an academic display of culinary knowledge. "Huate brown suace" if you will, liberally slathered around. Reserve early and grease whomever you have to to get seated down in the main room where you can hear the piano. 60 bucks a head for bleacher seats and monotone entrees hinges on atmoshpere to exact a positive experience.

We dined here on a Wednes. night and the restaurant was 1/2 full. The pianist was playing the theme song from "Ghost." Other tunes to follow were "Hill Street Blues" and "The Godfather." Equally painful, our waiter kept saying "I'll leave you two alone now," (w/ a wink) which got increasingly annoying since we weren't getting engaged. Menu was either $65/person for the prix fixe or $75/person for the tasting menu. Monkfish and the steak were subpar. Dessert was a joke - chocolate souffle sank when the waiter cut into it! The staff was courteous but trying to push the romance card a bit far and VERY cheesy. In all, this was by far the cheesiest, unjustifiably expensive place we've been to after 3 yrs. in NYC. I wouldn't recommend the place unless you're looking to re-live a dining experience from your high school prom (yes, it's that bad, folks).

The place is very romantic. Not flashy or gaudy, just simple elegance. It seems like every little detail has been seen to, From the lavish floral arrangements to great red wine glasses.The food? FORGETABOUTIT.. The gnocchi my wife had on or last visit were the softest things I have ever ate. She loved the Free Range Chicken, and I always get the Beef Wellington. That stuff is like a religious experience. So flavorful and cooked to perfection. Generally, I hear you need reservations weeks in advance, but I have had no problem just wandering in and getting a seat. The food is absolutely amazing and the service is impecable. While this Manhattan, candle-lit eatery is rather large for a West Village locale, each table will make you feel like you are alone.

An excellent restaurant with excellent service. The staff is friendly and the food delicious. This would make for a good dining experience, but add the romantic atmosphere, flowers, candles, etc... you can't lose!

OIBL / TIBS has a beautiful room and ambiance BUT the food, service, and prices are below average despite the reputation. It does not live up to its reputation. Take your $100 per head and go anywhere else.

Just fantastic! Reliable service, great food and the ambience is just right if you like the feel of an old rustic, colonial type place. Nothing but the best since it opened and still not too expensive. Maybe a few glithches but nothing to keep me going back again each month. The perfect romantic spot with a piano bar at night and winter fireplace.

My wife and I recently were in NY and dined at One if by Land. The appetizer was incredible, the desert second to none (I am still dreaming about it) but my main course of lamb was not that great. The waiter was incredible and the atmosphere was everything people say it is-great.

One if by Land has absolutely wonderful ambience, especially during the cooler months when the fireplaces are blazing. My fiancee brought me here for my birthday the first year we dated and we have been back for several special occasions since. So romantic, and the food is very well executed. It's not the best food in the city, but the overall experience makes it worth a visit.

From beautiful roses, twinkle candlelight to attentive hostess, it's everything one would expect on a romantic dinner, and more. If that doesn't melt her heart, I don't know what will :-) Frankly, the food is not on our mind, and probably not the most distinctive in NYC. Tips for first timer: Reserve your table a week ahead of time. $75 chef menu and $55 prix-fix per person is hardly expensive. Pay for parking if you drive, or else $110 ticket.

I love this place - a well-kept secret for many many years. I got engaged here and have celebrated almost every anniversary here. The staff is always polite and accommodating, the food has gotten better and better each time we come, and the ambience can't be beat in New York. Simple, old-world charm. I love the piano playing and the candles - the whole thing is just so special. For anyone who wants a special treat - go there! Or if you wnat great food in an extraordinary place - go!

Everything was wonderful here from the charming bartender and waiter to the spectacular food and ambience. There is no address on the door because of its historical promience so from the outside it's not what you expect. Expensive but well worth it!

It's not a cheap proposition but if you want to take the apple of your eye out for a real treat this is THE PLACE in NY. Service is excellent, food fantastic (go for the lamb with basmati rice and the banana tartine for dessert - sensational). The setting is the icing on this rich cake.

What an incredible place this is! As soon as you enter the door the magic begins. I loved the fireplaces,candlelights and the authentic colonial decor.The food is superb,very well presented and good to look at. From the minute we walked in, we were wowed. This place is hidden on a small street in the Village without a sign. We walked past it twice before we found it. Going through the doors, you feel like you have been transported to another place. There's a pianist in the bar, exposed brick and flowers everywhere and an amazing viewing garden. The food was amazing. (We had tasting menus.) The wine list was imposing but our waitress was very helpful and suggested a great bottle in our price range. I would highly recommend this place to anyone looking to impress.

I just had dinner there with my girlfriend and we had the best time. Food was stellar, service was extraordinary and I've never seen such a beautiful restaurant. I must admit we were a little nervous after reading some of the other reviews, but they must have been written by the competition, because none of it was true. This place is the best.
And I can't believe people were complaining about the price, $59 for 3 courses, where are these people from Kansas?

It's much nicer during the week, very busy on weekends. It's intimate, great food, impeccable service, lovely piano music. I've been in twice on weeknights and both times found myself dining next to celebrities (Ethan & Uma and Kelly Ripa & hubby). It costs something like $60 a person for the prix fixed dinner which I found to be a bargain for the beautiful dining room and great food.
