If I could, I would give zero stars; it was just awful. First, the appearance never appealed to me. It always seemed very dated and I never wanted to eat there.
I was looking for a Italian restaurant to take my husband for his birthday and we have a small child so I didn't want to go too far from home. I was online reading some reviews of Milanese and they didn't sound bad. My husband and I talked about the restaurant and he ate there years ago; it wasn't anything special he told me. I expressed my concerns how dated the place looked and he said that he read that it was updated in 2005. We agreed to try it.
What a waste of money! It was what I thought when we walked in- it was dark, dated, and smelled bad. UPDATED!? This is what I saw updated: woman's restroom had two newer toilets. The restroom itself on the other hand...1970? I said to my husband they most likely changed them out of necessary. Also, the light sconces seemed to be from the from the 2005 updates, along with the tables and chairs. The rest of the place was old and in need of revamping. There was also house furniture used for decor, however, not in good taste. To me it look more like a family member died and they brought their belongs to the restaurant. Not appropriate at all.
Now comes the food. The garlic bread smelled good but was so oily it made your stomach hurt. The calamari was greasy. The salad had way too much dressing that it was gross. My husband had the seafood francaise. The fish was heavily battered and fishy and the sauce was over powered by Vermouth or some very bad white cooking wine. I looked across the table and was turned off by the smell and glazed look. I ordered chicken cacciatore. I was leary when I sat down so I thought I would order something safe. The chicken breasts and onions were hard and the mushrooms were not cooked. At one point I pulled a long twig out of my mouth with a herb hanging at the end. I said to my husband, the twig could be from the half dead plants that they had in the restaurant. We were so disappointed. At that point we asked for the check. What a waste of my money! I should have stuck with my first thoughts and not have eaten there. Just gross!

We went to the Milanese Restaurant today for the Thursday lunch special. It was very good and it was a great bargain. Would go again.

I went to Milanese with 3 friends. There was a dinner special that included salad and dessert, which sounded like a good deal. So we took a seat. The server took a very long time to get to us, and one of us never got the salad that was to come with our meal. It took something like an hour and a half for our food to come out. We protested a bit, and she (the server) apologized, blaming the kitchen. Our food, while generous in portion, wasn??t very good either, but we waited so long so we just tolerated it. The server again took forever to get back to us to clear our dishes and gave us our check. My friend reminded her of the desserts, so she gave us attitude and went and got them. To top the whole debacle off, there was hair in my friend??s ice cream. A long, black hair on a scoop of vanilla. We asked for the manager, who took his time coming over to give us attitude as well. We told him what happened and he stated something like, ??Well, you ate it, so what??s the big deal?? We let him know we weren??t coming back, ever. He didn??t care. So we paid our bill (so you know, we didn??t get arrested or something) and left promptly.

I and other friends separate from this occasion had been there before, all occasions report the worst possible service with substandard Italian fare.

With so many Italian restaurants to choose from in Poughkeepsie, I have to say the Milanese is the best. I ordered the eggplant parm. and it came out piping hot and with the cheese still bubbling.....i'm getting hungry thinking about it!

I was sad moving away from NYC, Little Italy was simply the best. Then I discovered Milanese. I am in heaven. We dine there frequently, have parties and gathering there, they couldnt be more helpful, and treat us as family. I recently host a post wedding family party there as well. The guests, mostly from the city, were blown away with the quality, service and friendliness.

6 Adults dinned here on a saturday night - between appatizers, dinner, deserts and drinks the whole bill was amazingly inexpensive. SO much so we left the waiter a generous tip we almost felt guilty considering what we usualy pay in some of the so called finner restraunts. This place is family owne and simply decoated, but if you want good food at good prices with nice and friendly service THIS IS THE PLACE TO GO.

I dated someone that turned me on to this place and I fell in love. Not only was the atmosphere homey and welcoming but the food is superb. I consider myself a tremendous cook - but this is awesome italian quisine and an early very "checkerboard table cloth" style. If you want great food at a terrific price - go to the Milanese. It truly is a Poughkeepsie classic.

Pros: Food, Ask for magic tricks, Service good

Cons: Better wine?, More deserts?

I've been eating here since i was a little boy back in the 70's, the veal is incredible!!! I know for a fact that the veal is butchered from a whole leg of veal right in there kitchen! Because I was invited into the kitchen a few times by the owner (Santino) while he skillfully slices tender pieces of veal from the leg, then he takes the shank from the same leg he just butchered and makes fresh Osso Buco which coincidentally is my favorite dish! I've had Osso buco in alot of other places but the best I've EVER had and still do when i'm lucky enough to get it, (because i guess only two pieces can be made for every leg he butchers, so they go fast:)) is at the Milanese!!! Oh and by the way the rest of the food is really good too!!! :)
